Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash
In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.
May was National Pet Month, and Mulberry Art Studios had put together an array of artists, vendors, treats for pets and their humans, rescue animals ready for adoption, and more to celebrate. Unfortunately, the second annual “We Love Our Pets” art show had to be pushed back and was rescheduled for July. July is here and Lancaster County recently moved into the green phase, but large gatherings are still not allowed to take place. While most of the studio’s spring and summer art offerings have been postponed to later in the year, owner April Koppenhaver and curator Stephanie Cole were determined to make the show still happen. When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many began thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. The answer lay with the Lititz Borough Council. When restaurant representatives spoke with a council member, they learned that restaurants were See Restaurants pg 3

The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual experience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Art Show from pg 1 Koppenhaver and Cole have created an online gallery show - a virtual exhibit that will showcase artwork and hopefully still raise funds for their animal rescue partner, The Sebastian Foundation. The virtual exhibit will be hosted at www.mulberryart studios.com and will feature about 150 pieces of art featuring beloved furry friends from more than 80 local artists, half of whom are youths. A variety of media will be represented. The exhibit will go live on First Friday, July 3. Viewers will be able to vote for People’s Choice in both adult and youth categories. A Best of Show will be chosen by the studio. The exhibit and voting will be open through the end of July. The idea for “We Love Our Pets” grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and adopted by Koppenhaver’s nephew. Eventually, the nephew could no longer care for Milo, so the beagle mix was invited to live at Mulberry Art Studios, where he became the organization’s unofficial mascot. “Milo was an absolute gem,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He greeted all of our guests with his friendly warm tail wag or thump of the tail on the floor, his big
brown eyes shining brightly. He would then proceed to go to our office and begin snoring.” Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II, enjoyed Milo’s company as well. “I often thought Milo was as much of a blessing to Charlie as Charlie was to Milo,” Koppenhaver recalled. Milo died in November 2018, and less than two months later, Gaul passed away at age 93. Koppenhaver created the “We Love Our Pets” art show in memory of Gaul and Milo. “Our pets and our partners make a profound difference in our lives, and we wanted to raise money for an organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together,” Koppenhaver said. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets. The foundation is committed to compassion toward other living beings and aims to create a better world by educating the public about the welfare of animals. Ellen Stark, a volunteer for The Sebastian Foundation, commented, “We hope that by learning about us and how an individual can get involved, we will be able to welcome more volunteers into our group as well as potentially connecting one of our sweet dogs with their forever family.” Stark noted that proceeds from the art show will help The Sebastian Foundation provide food, bedding, and veterinary care to animals that may have been neglected or abused. “We rely on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future,” she said. For more information about the “ We Love Our Pets” art show, readers may email Cole at stephanie. mulberryart@gmail.com.
cast of more than 50 - the largest in West End history. With a score that includes such tunes as “ We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “42nd Street” tells the story of famed theater director Julian Marsh as he tries to mount a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression. Soldiers Field, located off Timber Road in Mount Gretna, will be transformed into a drivein movie theater with a large movie screen. Attendees will be able to tune their FM radio to the film’s audio. Gates will open at 8 p.m. and the film will begin at dusk. about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful virtual event. In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-AWish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-AWish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and especially our Wish families, said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited

Currently, the restaurant offers disposable menus and counter service for the patio area. “We aren’t yet doing table service, but come inside to order, and we bring it out, said Concra, who noted that it is necessary to wear a mask when entering the restaurant. Another change is a raised bed vegetable and flower garden that was added to the area between the stage and the street during the quarantine. “Some of the vegetables (from the garden) will be used in the restaurant, said Concra. “There are herbs (growing, and) the basil will be used. Concra said that the restaurant hopes to continue offering outside dining even as the county transitions into the green phase, when partial occupancy may be allowed in restaurants. “We hope to continue this as long as the borough allows, she said.

being encouraged to do what they could to survive. Concra and others began to look at an area behind the building, where the restaurant’s patio with several tables for two was already located. The parking lot directly behind the patio that was bordered by a garden festooned with Edison-style lights offered possibilities. “The owners contacted Tait Towers, who quickly came up with a stage to rent us, said Concra, who noted that the structure is allowed by the borough under the special exemptions permitted in the aftermath of the shutdown. The stage accommodates eight tables, which were brought out from inside the restaurant, offering seating for 24. Across the parking lot, an area with a rug can accommodate three more tables for two. The outdoor area opened in the evenings in mid-June. The area is open on Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are not necessary,

After signing up on Beanstack, Manheim Community Library readers should join the group for their child’s age group on the “Manheim Community Library” Facebook page. After joining, participants will have access to information on weekly themes, book recommendations, crafts, creative prompts, and virtual programming. The library’s new youth services coordinator, Lindsay Bandy, is ready to help readers find new books and activities to enjoy this summer. Weekly activities available through the Facebook groups will include the following.
On Maker Mondays, Bandy will post about the new theme and share creative ideas for each age group. This will include crafts with step-by-step instructions, prompts for building with Legos or other materials, writing activities, and science experiments. Children will be encouraged to share photos of their creations with parental permission. On Teen and Tween Tuesdays, Bandy will share theme-related book recommendations on Facebook Live at 11 a.m. for tweens and 1 p.m. for teenagers. Patrons may request any of the featured books for curbside delivery. Wildcard Wednesdays will be full of surprises, including special activities or programs. Preschoolers can tune in to Facebook Live at 10 a.m. on Thursdays for story times with Bandy, and parents will find easy literacy-building tips and activities posted on the Preschool Facebook group each week. Books available for curbside delivery will also be highlighted. Fridays Are Funny! will feature a humorous read-aloud and book recommendations for
elementary-aged children at 11 a.m. Patrons may request any of the recommended books for curbside delivery. For more information about these Facebook events, readers may email info@manheim library.org or send the library a message on Facebook. Additionally, virtual events will take place online via Zoom, Facebook Live, or YouTube. Registration is required for most events, and links are available at https://manheimlibrary.org/services/summer-reading-program/. For live Zoom events, the link will be emailed to participants a few days before the event. The programs will take place at 10 a.m. Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) will present Virtual STEAM Mobile: Endangered Animals live on Zoom on Monday, July 6. Participants will need paper, a pencil, coloring implements, and access to www.worldwildlife.org. Children in kindergarten through grade 12 are welcome to join in. Drum for FUN with Tammi will be livestreamed on Zoom on Wednesday, July 8, at 10 a.m.

Lititz Rec Schedules 2020 Triathlon
Participants in the Lititz recCenter’s 2020 triathlon will have opportunities to bike, swim, and run when this year’s event is held on Aug. 9. By Ann Mead Ash
In light of COVID-19 restrictions, organizers of the Lititz recCenter’s annual triathlon event knew they would have to put extra consideration into whether this year’s triathlon would take place as scheduled. The decision was made in a meeting held at the Lititz recCenter on June 5, when the county went to the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan. “We thought, ‘We will be green by Aug. 9,’ said Simon Ababou, fitness director with the rec center. With that positive thought in mind, the rec center has decided to hold its annual triathlon, which requires participants to swim 300 meters in the Lititz Springs outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles, on Sunday, Aug. 9, starting at 8 a.m. As in the past, the event will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that

Novice triathletes may want to start with a sprint-type event like the Lititz recCenter triathlon. the event has been growing. “Last year we had good participation with both teams and individuals, and we had more than 240 participants, he said. Although team participation has increased in the last few years, this year more individuals have signed up. “We would like to see more teams (take part), shared Ababou, who encouraged families to engage children who swim to participate. Ababou noted that a younger family member may complete the swimming portion for a parent. “This is a good chance to (develop) a healthy lifestyle, he said. “(It’s a chance) for whole families to get moving
families and friends can enjoy the event together. The minimum age to take part in the event is 14. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. The rec center has written to Lancaster County swim teams to apprise them of this opportunity. Ababou noted that the outdoor pool, located adjacent to the rec center, is currently being renovated, but it is slated to be ready for the triathlon. According to Ababou, attendance at

According to Ababou, COVID-19 restrictions have made it difficult for people to train, but he added that now, people are anxious to be outside. “It’s good to get out,” he said. “This is a chance for us to get out and exercise.” Ababou noted that the benefits of exercise are many. “It’s good for us to keep our systems clean and strong, so we can fight diseases and viruses,” he said, adding that during the summer months it is important to stay hydrated. congregations’ respective prayer shawl ministries contributed to the VBS. The experienced crafters taught VBS attendees to knit, crochet, and finger knit during the week. The older children made pocket-size prayer shawls that were given as gifts to church members who were unable to leave their homes. The prayer shawl group members, their friends, and the VBS community also made scarves and hats that were later distributed through community meals and the Lancaster Food Hub. “Trinity and Zion’s prayer shawl groups, ‘Knit in God’s Love’ and ‘Skeins and Scones,’ may not be able to meet at this time, but from home, members continue to knit, crochet, and weave items such as scarves, prayer shawls, pocket prayer shawls, baby hats, and lap blankets for people who are going through rough times,” said Dina Slechta, who is part of the VBS leadership team representing Trinity UCC along with Diane Rice. Lindsey Wagner is the team’s liaison with Zion. At its most basic, knitting involves forming interlocking loops from a single length of yarn. This produces a strong, yet flexible fabric. Children who attended vacation Bible school (VBS) at Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC), 2340 State St., East Petersburg, last year, learned about how they are “Knit in God’s Love,” which was the week’s theme. This year’s VBS theme will build on that curriculum
with the theme “Still Knit in God’s Love.” The concepts taught last year highlighted biblical examples of items being knit in God’s love: human bodies, communities, the Earth and all its creatures, and God’s presence in individuals’ days. The entire week was a demonstration of connection among community members as Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, collaborated with Trinity UCC to produce the event as it has in previous years. Additionally, the
Unexpected Places” by Mark Yaconelli led by the Rev. Jack Esbenshade will take place via video call from 7 to 8 p.m. on July 13 to Thursday, July 16. Instead of a closing program on July 17, a video call featuring a Bible story bingo game has been planned. “No prizes, just having fun together, still knit in God’s love,” Slechta remarked. Slechta is eager to see how VBS comes together. “I can’t wait to see what all of the different pieces look like in the end,” Slechta said. “It is also fun to learn new things. We are having to learn to use technology that we have not had to use before. It is exciting to see how it is all part of how God can make good things come out of adversity.” Although VBS will be virtual,

perspectives, which will highlight the results of enduring adversity with God’s help: understanding, compassion, strength, ingenuity, and humility. “We want VBS to be a positive experience and an encouragement to everyone to ‘make lemonade when life hands you lemons,’” Slechta said. “We want people to look for the good that God can bring about in any circumstance.” In a marked difference from last year, VBS will not be held in person. Rather, it will be offered as an online choice board, which some teachers have used for distance learning. The program will run from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, at participants’ convenience. They will be able to choose short activities that work for their time, interests, and technological abilities, such as videos, coloring pages, and crafts from an online list. A short review of finger knitting using shoestring licorice will be offered, and Slechta suggested that adults may want to obtain licorice or find other materials suitable for the craft in advance.
