A Campaign For Lifecycles From Coast To Coast Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer
Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies.
“We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. See Lifecycles pg 7
Beginning on Aug. 6, Erin Steinweg (left) and Garrett Collins plan to bicycle approximately 4,200 miles from the Pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of Virginia in about 60 days. The couple will raise funds to support Lifecycles, a Lancaster-based organization that mentors youths through bicycling experiences.

Elizabethtown friends Anthony Cicero IV, 18, and Dakota Snyder, 17, have both been fishing since they could walk and like to spend as much time as they can on the Susquehanna River and at area lakes catching fish. All of that time and practice paid off when they put their skills to the test at The Bass Federation (TBF) Student Angler Federation’s (SAF) 10th annual High School Fishing World Finals in Florence, Ala., and won first place. Cicero and Snyder were among 389 high school teams from across the country competing at Pickwick Lake. The competition began on June 19, and See Fishing World Finals pg 3

With the help of Juniper Village connections director Renee Lentz, Provost spread the word to other residents at Juniper Village about a new crochet group that would make projects with the purpose of donating them to individuals and organizations in need. The group chose the name Crochet4aCause and has been meeting on a monthly basis in the retirement community’s lounge for more than one year. Residents spend the afternoon together creating a variety of handcrafted items such as scarves, baby hats, and lap blankets that they like to say are made with love and prayers in every stitch. The materials are donated by Juniper Village and the Mount Joy community. This spring, Charlotte Atkins, 89, shared a YouTube tutorial that she had found for ribbon-stitched crosses with the group members, and they completed the project using plastic canvas, ribbon, flowers, and plenty of patience - just in time for the Easter holiday. When Provost was a young girl, a neighbor offered to pay her to crochet edges on Irish linen handkerchiefs that ladies from the Masonic Auxiliary were giving out. “I think she paid me 10 cents a piece, and it kept me busy all summer, sitting on the porch,” recalled Provost. She also enjoys knitting, but trouble with her eyesight and manual dexterity in recent years has meant making more mistakes as she works - and fixing mistakes is easier with crocheting than knitting. Atkins got books and taught herself how to crochet when she was in her 20s so that she could make doilies. Now, she and Provost laugh at how popular those crocheted doilies used to be. “We had doilies under everything,” Atkins said. “And back then all of your dressers had to have a crocheted (cover) on them,” added Provost. “I gave everything (I made) away, and I’m still giving it away now,” said Atkins, who also did a lot of sewing and cross-stitch work in the past. “I’ve done a little bit of everything.” Erma Halstead, 90, learned how to crochet as a child. “I just enjoy doing it. I love to see the finished product,” Halstead remarked. Juniper Village is a nine-acre senior living campus located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. the field was cut to 31 teams for the final day on June 22. Winners were determined by the heaviest final-day weight. The Elizabethtown duo caught three bass weighing in at a total of 16 pounds, 6 ounces, that led them to earn the prestigious title of 2019 High School Fishing World Finals champions. “It felt awesome, like we were on top of the world, said Cicero. Cicero and Snyder edged out their closest competitors, second-place winners Griffin Phillips and Fletcher Phillips of Mount Olive, Ala., by 1 pound, 9 ounces. Every fishing squad consisted of two high school anglers and one adult boat captain. Snyder said that at first, with nearly 400 boats out on the water, the lake felt crowded. On the final day of competition, they had a bit more space to navigate when the boats headed out at 5:30 a.m. Fishing commenced at 6 a.m., and the teams were allowed to continue fishing for bass until 1:15 p.m. Live bait and trolling a method of leaving multiple baited lines in the water - were not permitted. Both young men caught their personal all-time best: Snyder with a bass weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and Cicero with a largemouth bass weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, that earned Big Bass honors for the day. “Working as a team really helped us, noted Snyder.

Lifecycles from pg 1 Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a cross-country bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, readers may visit www.gofundme.com/ coast-to-coast-campaign-for-life cycles. More information about Lifecycles may be found at www.lifecyclesteam.org.
