Manheim Central Seniors Earn Scholarships BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Women’s Club of Manheim recently awarded scholarships to Manheim Central senior girls pursuing postsecondary education. While the club typically awards three scholarships annually, this year the members presented five. “We just decided with everything
going on with COVID, people are struggling more financially, and it was important to support as many people as we can,” explained Shayna Sharp, education chair of the club. Scholarship recipients are Emmalynn Varner, Rachel King, Emma Ulrich, Eve Sheaffer and Julia Wolfe. Varner will be attending Messiah University in the fall to See Scholarships pg 3
Members of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee and advisory board lay flowers at Veterans Memorial Park, where the group plans to construct a plaza.
he Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee (MVMC) has a motto that sums up its mission: Honor Their Service. To fulfill this goal, the group recently launched a capital campaign to raise funds for the creation of a memorial plaza in Manheim’s Veterans Memorial Park. “This is something we want to do for all Manheim veterans, whether they served in war or in peace,” said retired Army Brig. Gen. George Schwartz, a member of the committee. “There is a long list of people in Manheim who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but everyone who serves sacrifices something. We want to honor everyone.” The memorial will be dedicated to residents of Manheim Borough and Penn and Rapho townships. It will include flagpoles for the standards of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard as well as the Merchant Marines of World War II. The plaza will also consolidate the various memorials already in place around town to provide one access point for honoring veterans.
“Consolidating the memorials will give them more meaning,” Schwartz said. “People might walk by some of the memorials and never really notice them. Some have actually been in storage because they were moved due to development, so it will be nice to be able to have a dedicated place to put them all.”
“There is a long list of people in Manheim who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but everyone who serves sacrifices something. We want to honor everyone.” Members of the MVMC had planned to conduct their capital campaign in 2020, but the pandemic put it off a year. The group, made up of volunteers, hopes to raise $300,000 through donations, inkind gifts, special events and the sale of memorial bricks for the plaza.
“Parts of the plaza are going to be paved by bricks, and they will be engraved,” Schwartz noted. “Bricks can honor any veteran, not just someone from Manheim. It’s a great way to get involved in our effort and to recognize a veteran.” He said the committee is working on plans for people to adopt a veteran from World War II and purchase a brick in his or her honor. The MVMC is being assisted by an advisory board made up of local residents including Penn Township manager Mark Hiester, former Manheim Central School superintendent Lew Jury and Manheim Borough Council president Carol Phillips. The capital campaign will run through Veterans Day, and the committee has set a goal for the groundbreaking of the plaza to coincide with the Manheim Memorial Day parade in 2022. While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out.

Ruhl’s United Methodist Church will hold a soup sale at its picnic grove.
“It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. “People can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl

remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next year, which typically includes a full day of music, games and fellowship, but they felt the soup sale was a way to ease back into community outreach. “We wanted to serve our community in a way that everyone would feel comfortable,” Ruhl said. “Lots of people come every year, and we wanted to be there for them.” Proceeds from the soup sale are used to maintain the picnic grove, where the church will hold services on six Sundays in July and August. the importance of these young women and their contributions to our community. These are our future members.” The scholarship program is just one part of the Women’s Club of Manheim’s service. The group supports the Manheim community with projects including providing Christmas gifts for students in the district, offering grants and donating to local food pantries among other organizations. “Each year, the Women’s Club of Manheim gives more than $10,000 to the community,” Sharp said. “One hundred percent of our fundraising goes back into the community.” The Women’s Club of Manheim is open to women age 18 or older, and the club is always looking for new members, she noted. REYS Has Your Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s an essential school supply, but for some students, a new backpack isn’t in the budget. That’s where Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) steps in. REYS offers Backpacks to School, providing free backpacks and school supplies to students in grades one through 12. “Any family in need is eligible for a backpack,” said Jeremy Freimark, REYS program director. “We serve primarily Lancaster County, but we also have served families in surrounding areas including York and Harrisburg.” REYS, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, has been providing the service since 2012 and has given away thousands of backpacks. “We have been able to provide more than 600 backpacks each year, and the majority of them are not repeat families,” Freimark noted.
Backpacks are stuffed with school supplies, including notebooks, pocket folders, markers and colored pencils. The registration deadline to receive a backpack is Saturday, July 31. Backpack distribution will be Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13. “After families register, they’ll be assigned a time to come in during that week in August to pick up their backpack,” Freimark explained. “We try to make it an individualized experience for the recipients, and the students get to pick out their backpack.” The backpack program helps REYS meet its mission of providing community service, he noted. “REYS See REYS pg 4

REYS from pg 3 is here to support students in three ways: spiritual guidance, academic assistance and social support,” he stated. The backpack program also serves another purpose, he added, as it brings families into the center and introduces them to what REYS offers. Programming at REYS is faith-based and is available for students in grades one through 12. It includes homework help, sports and music programs, meals and more. REYS is always looking for donations of backpacks and supplies, as well as volunteers to pack the backpacks. “For anyone who wants to volunteer, it’s an opportunity for them to walk beside the youth center and help support families in need in our community,” Freimark said. Volunteers can call the center at 717-653-9511 or email office@reys.org to sign up. Freimark emphasized that the backpack program is part of REYS’ overall goal of supporting students. “We offer this in addition to assisting with the academic needs of the students in our community,” he stated. “It’s a great way for us to reach out.” For more information on the backpack program, visit https://reys.org.

VFW Tournaments Held
The Manheim VFW’s 10U1 team placed first in its division in the Manheim VFW Baseball program tournaments.
Guard from 2014 to 2016. He served with Company B 1st Battalion, Infantry Regiment 56 and the Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He received the Army Achievement Medal for training conducted with Lithuania soldiers. The final baseball tournament was held on Father’s Day weekend for the 12U1/12U2 age group and honored the late William “Bill” Travitz. This tournament has been occurring on an annual basis for over 50 years, and in the late 1990s, it was named in memory of Travitz, who was a loyal supporter of Manheim Baseball. He served as a role model, coach, and teacher to those involved in the Manheim VFW Baseball program. The tournament commemorates his dedication, his example and his love of the sport. Each year, this tournament honors someone who had a close relationship with Bill. This year, his widow, Barb TravitzSteffy, threw the first pitch. Due to a recent accident, Travitz-Steffy was pushed onto the field in a wheelchair by her grandson, Chase Travitz, who plays for the Manheim High School baseball program. She threw the first pitch to her other grandson, Tanner Travitz, who plays for the 12U Section 1 Manheim VFW squad. New this year, the 12U2 tournament was split into two divisions because there were so many teams. After seeding games were completed,

The Manheim VFW Baseball program tournaments recently returned after a year off due to COVID. As in years past, the six tournaments over three weekends wrapped up on Father’s Day, June 20. The tournaments were held at Creek Field, Pool Field and Island Field, culminating in championship games at Pool Field. A total of 43 teams of children ages 8 to 12 participated in the tournaments, with players traveling from Lancaster, York, Berks, Juniata and Lebanon counties. One of the elements of each event, a tradition which started five years ago, was an opening ceremony that includes a ceremonial first pitch by an honored guest. On June 4, the 8U/10U2 tournament was held, and it began with Mike Naff throwing out the ceremonial

Northwest EMS Awards Scholarships BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) recently awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors at Manheim Central High School. Audrey Miller and Jenna Wagner were awarded the Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, named in honor of Bob Stirling. Stirling
was an active member of the Manheim community, including the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association, which merged with Northwest EMS in 2013. The scholarship is awarded to residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. Miller will attend Penn State Mont

Alto campus in the fall and plans to become a physical therapist assistant. “She stood out to us because of her academic and athletic achievements, both on the school soccer team and on a community league soccer team, as well as her volunteer work in the community,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. At school, Miller was a co-adviser of the Interact Service Club and a member of the book club, the Spanish Club, the pingpong club and Student Council. She volunteers at the Water Street Mission and at her church, Salem United Methodist Church, where she serves and prepares meals and works in the church library. She also helped to organize and run the Elementary School Festival. Wagner is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania
College of Health Sciences. “She stood out to us because during her high school career she dual enrolled in the college in the high school program, allowing her to complete six college credits,” Shenk stated. “Additionally, her application indicated that she has already taken steps to pursue her chosen degree by arranging shadow experiences at Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Hospital ICU and through a mentoring program facilitated by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.” In school, Wagner participated in Spanish Club, marching band, jazz band, TriCounty Music Honor Society, Lititz Community Band, quiz bowl and the medical careers club. She also volunteers with her youth group. Northwest EMS is based in Elizabethtown, but has stations in Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville.

“It’s so good to be back (at camp) in person,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers, but this year, six weeks of weekday summer camp are being held at the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, along with a two-week virtual camp. The camp has programs for children, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities. Camp began June 21, and two-week sessions will be held through Friday, Aug. 6, with the exception of the week that began on July 5 because of the holiday. Paskoff explained that when the organization asked the state for approval to run the camp, COVID19 restrictions were more stringent, including wearing masks and COVID-19 testing for those who had not been vaccinated. “They are lighter now,” said Paskoff on the second day of camp. She added that the number of campers was limited by restrictions as well. “We would normally have 80 campers at each session, but we had to cut back, so we only have 30,” she said. Calling the in-person camps “basic,” Paskoff explained that sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, campers use the pool in Manheim or take part in therapeutic horseback riding at Greystone Stables in Leola. In addition to swimming, activities include group games, crafts, snacks, and music therapy. Special events will include visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile
Sanctuary, a petting zoo, an entertainer, and more. “(These are) all activities we can have here (at Manheim),” said Paskoff, who noted that the 1-to-2 childto-staff ratio is still in effect, and a nurse is on site. “Every child who wants to come can come, and we can meet that child’s needs,” Paskoff stated. In the spring of 2020, when parents reported that children were having a hard time adjusting to school being closed, Paskoff and program director Elaine Burnett worked to create meaningful virtual and touchpoint experiences for campers. “We had 50 kids on the screen (at virtual camp),” reported Paskoff, who encouraged staff and visitors to wear their Aaron’s Acres yellow T-shirts because she knew the color would comfort campers. “While the activities were going on, staff members would call a name and say, ‘Pick that up to show it. It’s beautiful.’” Virtual activities included cooking, scavenger hunts, bingo, and singing. “It was better than we ever thought,” said Paskoff. Touch-point activities included surprise fall and spring visits to campers’ homes. Dressed in their Aaron’s Acres blue and yellow gear, the five members of the administrative team used the organization’s van to bring each child a special gift. Parents also received hot chocolate in the fall and the makings of ice cream sundaes in the spring. Burnett called ahead, asking parents to send the child to the door when the bell rang. “We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Paskoff. “(Each camper was) so excited that Aaron’s Acres was at their house.” More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for
swimming from late May to midSeptember. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively .com/summer-vibes-at-pa -beaches. • Bald Eagle State Park, Howard • Black Moshannon State Park, Philipsburg • Chapman State Park, Clarendon • Hills Creek State Park, Wellsboro • Little Pine State Park, Waterville • Lyman Run State Park, Galeton • Ole Bull State Park, Cross Fork • Parker Dam State Park, Penfield
