EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of

losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help.

The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

“We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such

an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). See Golf Outing pg 5

New School Will Open In Columbia Brittany’s Hope Remains By Ann Mead Ash Focused On Helping Children

Heather Ha, program manager at St. John Neumann School for Children and Families in Columbia, showcases the new cubbies that were installed at the school, which, despite the shutdown, was due to be completed in June. The school is now scheduled to open in November.

Organization Marks 20th Anniversary By Francine Fulton

W hat started out as a year of celebration to observe the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, has evolved into an effort to continue providing services during the coronavirus pandemic. See Brittany’s Hope pg 5

In attendance at Brittany’s Ball in March, which was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, were Jaden (left), who hails from China, and Theo, from South Korea. Both boys were adopted by families in Mount Joy. Brittany’s Hope provides adoption grants that allow families to adopt a child with special needs from another country.

Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health (CHI), is firm when discussing the beliefs of the organization’s board concerning the new St. John Neumann School for Children and Families that CHI is building on Locust Street in Columbia. “Everything we offer should be available to everybody,” said Goropoulos. “Every student will have every opportunity within the center. Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our family-focused approach to child care See New School pg 2

revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who

added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They want-

ed) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet to both floors over the top of the parking lot,” said Goropoulos. COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally, Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services. “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company, said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community. The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet

or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or

reschedule our event, Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like. The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s

event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, readers may visit www.epc golfouting.com. Brittany’s Hope, which is based in Elizabethtown, has had to change its focus from celebrating to fundraising. “We were planning all these wonderful things to celebrate and commemorate our work over the past 20 years, stated Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “We’re now basically redefining our efforts and getting creative on how to carry on the work we started. In place of celebration, we are revamping, reworking and restructuring to continue to breathe life into the important work we do at Brittany’s Hope. See Brittany’s Hope pg 12

Statement from Manheim Area Pastors Amid the turmoil over racism in the US, we as pastors serving in the Manheim area join with many others around the country in condemning the ongoing racism and its consequences, particularly the loss of life by people of color. Racism is sinful and contrary to the gospel; it denies the teachings of Jesus and our common, created humanity. We confess our own complicity and silence, sadly acknowledging that racism takes place in our own community. We stand against all expressions of racism and are working for its eradication. We commit to examining our own attitudes and actions, knowing that lasting change begins with transformed hearts continually yielded to God. The New Testament says that our real struggle will be with powers and principalities, which in this case are embodied in systems of institutionalized racism that still persist and attack the humanity of our sisters and brothers of color. Let us not turn away or ignore this sinful pattern of attitudes and practice that has been tearing away at our country and community for too long. Let us not turn away from the cries of our brothers and sisters to join them in creating a more just union. To that end, we pledge ourselves to an intentional process of learning, listening and dialogue, as we continue to learn how to truly love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership.

A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with

the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the oncampus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

Brittany’s Hope from pg 5

R060715

Fortunately, the organization was able to hold the first Brittany’s Ball: A Boots & Bow Tie Gala on March 7 at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The fundraising gala took place just before the shutdown orders went into place. However, its 20th annual golf tournament at Conestoga Country Club in August has been canceled. Plans call for the Brittany’s Hope 5K to take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Stone Gables, 1 Hollinger Lane Elizabethtown, but it will be held with a new socially distant format. More information about the event is available at www.walkoflove.org. Brittany’s Hope was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Brittany’s Hope is not an adoption agency. Rather, it provides adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions. “The family that started this organization adopted 12 children, including myself, so I am an adoptee,” explained Sahd. “Brittany’s Hope was established as a result of the death of their first adopted daughter, Brittany. Out of that tragedy came the birth of Brittany’s Hope.” In addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “In developing countries many children are stuck in institutional care and there are those left behind because of their special needs,” said Sahd. “We provide direct care to orphaned children who are not eligible for adoption or who are waiting to be adopted.” During the March gala, attendees learned about the success of the organization over the past 20 years and met some of the adopted children. “In 20 years, we have impacted 29,000 families through our humanitarian efforts,” Sahd reported. “(Through) adoption grants, we have found homes for 1,387 children with special needs. They are in the United States and thriving and they are loved and cherished. We are not only helping orphaned children, but families who have the calling to adopt and grow their families.” Sahd credits Brittany’s Hope supporters for the success of the organization. “We do not receive government grants because our work is so unique we often don’t quality for them,” she noted. “Our main revenue is our events and our individual givers.” The organization recently started a capital campaign to help finance the cost of its services. “We are determined to push forward,” Sahd shared. “So many lives are at stake. Orphaned children are counting on us.” For more information about Brittany’s Hope, readers may call 717-367-9614 or visit www.brittanyshope.org or www.facebook.com/Brittanys.Hope.Foun dation. More information about donating to the organization’s capital campaign can also be found on the website and Facebook page.
