hen Logan Bomgardner was younger, he was a tad rambunctious. “I was full of energy,” said Logan, who is now 11 and a student at Lititz Elementary School. Fortunately for Logan, his father, Andrew, was coaching Manheim Central Middle School wrestling at the time. When Logan was 8, Andrew started taking him to the Manheim Mat Club, eventually moving him to Lancaster Alliance Wrestling (LAW), a nonprofit organization also based in Manheim that is dedicated to fostering, promoting and encouraging the sport of amateur wrestling. This year, Logan placed third at the state PAUSAW (Pennsylvania USA Wrestling) freestyle tournament held at Alvernia University in Reading in June. He was the only student in Warwick School District to qualify for the event. Logan was scheduled to wrestle in three

Betancourt has been impressed with Logan’s outlook. “This kid always has a smile,” said Betancourt. “He is genuinely excited to be in the sport, and those are the kinds of athletes I love being around.” Readers who would like to know more about LAW may search for “Lancaster Alliance Wrestling” on Facebook.

Every three hours, an alarm goes off in Rosemarie Curcio’s house. It lets her know it’s time to feed the pups. But, these aren’t the kind of pups you may be picturing; instead, they are baby bats, and at the moment, 10 of them live in a bat nursery in the basement of Curcio’s Marietta home. For more than 30 years, Curcio has been rescuing and rehabbing bats. “I’ve always been interested in wildlife,” she said. Originally from New York, she volunteered at an animal rescue but didn’t focus on bats until she spent time in bat boot camp at Bat World Sanctuary in Texas over two summers, and she found her true calling. “So much focus is on the ‘glamour’ species that need help - the wolves, the bald eagles - bats are the ugly ones,” she remarked. “I’m always for the underdog. I’m fascinated by bats.” She began caring for bats in her New York City apartment - without telling her landlord - and when she retired from teaching special education, she relocated to Marietta in 2009. June is pup season, and after a few weeks of formula feeding, the pups will be ready to try flying. Curcio has several large tents set up in her basement for the bats to practice in. Once they are ready, she’ll move them to a rescue in Chester County for outdoor enclosures and more flying opportunities before finally releasing them in a barn near the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border. Curcio admits that her passion might disturb some people, but she emphasizes that bats play an important role in our ecosystem. “Bats are so important because they eat insects. They will consume mosquitoes,” she stated. “Farmers should want them around because they eat beetles and other pests that attack crops.” Her round-the-clock care of

Good’s Store in Ephrata has moved to a new location, 1127 S. State St., where the former Kmart store was located. The building will be shared with Dutch-Way Farm Market, which plans to open in late summer. The portion of the building occupied by Good’s Store has about 34,000 square feet of retail space, which is nearly four times larger than the former store, located at 1686 W. Main St. With the larger retail space, the new Ephrata store offers an expanded selection of merchandise across the board. Clothing and footwear are prominent categories, with brands including Carhartt, Wrangler, Under Armour, Carolina, Muck Boots and Skechers. The selection of work boots has also expanded considerably. Also, men’s suits are available for the first time at the Ephrata store. The new store also features a larger selection of home goods, including kitchen items, canning supplies, cleaning products, bed and bath items and curtains. Among the items for sale are KitchenAid appliances, Ball canning supplies, OXO and Norpro kitchen gadgets, Achim mini blinds and Capitol Earth Rugs. There is also an expanded selection of home décor items, candles, gifts, cards and books, including children’s books, cookbooks and Bibles. The toy department has more games, puzzles and toys from Lego, Melissa & Doug, and Ertl, and now offers plush toys for sale.

Research Farm Opens To Public Penn State Extension’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SEAREC), 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, will be open to the public until Wednesday, Aug. 31, from dawn to dusk. This research farm is the site of dozens of vegetable, field crop, and environmental research projects; one of the largest flower trials in the country; and five Master Gardener-designed idea (demonstration) gardens.
and annual trials. The farm also includes Blooms and Butterflies - also known as Bees, Bugs, and Blooms - a large, established native plant trial plot that is 10 years old. Through the years, a variety of research projects have been conducted in the plot, and Master Gardener volunteers continue to monitor and track pollinator activity there. Anyone who wants to beat the heat should visit early in the day as shade is limited. History Programs Posted Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has posted upcoming activities. The site’s annual Civil War weekend will return to its traditional July dates. The event will take place on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 17, from noon to 4 p.m. Standard admission rates will apply. The activities scheduled across both days include musket demonstrations, a children’s musket drill, hands-on craft activities for children in the Education Building, an encampment of re-enactors portraying Union generals and members of the infantry and cavalry, tools of Civil War field medicine and surgery, displays of artifacts from the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster and Associates, examples of Civil War artillery, and a display highlighting the work of the U.S. Sanitary Commission. The July Collection Showcase, “Crime and Punishment,” will be presented virtually at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 14. The monthly showcase gives viewers a look at the collections of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The artifacts to be presented in July are an auto theft signal system from Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, pieces related to the railroad police from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, church benches from Old Economy Village, pieces related to the coal police from the Anthracite Heritage Museum, and items from the Old Chester Courthouse. At the end of the presentation, viewers will vote for their favorite story or object. Registration is required for this free program. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/July CollectionShowcase.
