LCCTC FFA Recognizes Member Achievements Members of the LCCTC FFA chapter were recognized in a virtual awards ceremony on May 26. All chapter members are part of the Animal Production Science & Technology Program at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The chapter members are high school seniors and will receive Pennsylvania FFA Convention T-shirts as a graduation gift sponsored by the Lancaster County Agriculture Council. Throughout the school year, all students had an opportunity to job shadow, interact with guest speakers on a variety of topics, visit a variety of places related to animal science on curriculum field trips, and earn several industry certifications.

The 2019-20 LCCTC FFA officer team included (front, from left) president Aubrielle Patton, treasurer Rosimar Quinones, secretary Morgan Turner, vice president Katie Brandsema, and reporter Jazmine Kelsey. The FFA adviser is Lori Hess (back).

“Prior to COVID-19, we couldn’t keep up with the demand for our services,” commented Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). “Many of our volunteers seem to find a population or type of visit that they enjoy and that is a good fit for their pets so they may focus in that area.” Gerth reported that KPETS currently has 443 registered human volunteers and 476 registered animals, as some of the volunteers have multiple pets that work with them. The teams provide more than 10,000 hours of visitation every year in communities throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. “More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit,” Gerth remarked. In the past, Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) annual benefit auctions were held at the school, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz, on a Friday evening and during the day Saturday at the end of May or early June. This year, however, the auction will be held online. Bids may be placed from Monday, July 20, through Saturday, July 25. “The (auction) is going to look a bit different this year,” wrote organizer Karen Burkholder in a press release. “With COVID-19 (restrictions) shutting down schools, we had to rethink how we would hold our annual (fundraiser).” She added that the decision was made in March when the committee, knowing the May date for the live auction was approaching, realized that restrictions would prevent the event from happening. “We talked about a lot of different options,” Burkholder recalled. “(We) decided that going with an online auction looked like a good choice.” The online auction will feature many of the same categories of items as the live auction has in the past. Categories range from jewelry and home See LAMS pg 4

A variety of items will go up for bids when Lititz Area Mennonite School holds its annual benefit auction online from July 20 through 25. COVID-19 restrictions prevented the annual event from being held in person at the school as it has in the past.

Their monetary awards were sponsored by Occupational Advisory Board members Robert Herr and Don Ranck. The DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award was given to Aubrielle Patton, Garden Spot, for her leadership as president of the LCCTC FFA. In addition to her classroom leadership, Aubrielle also took part in every FFA activity the chapter offered outside of school time. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. The pet can motivate or calm in ways that amaze the staff (members),” Gerth said. “We’ve heard over and over again about residents in health care or hospice settings who finally smile or even communicate when the therapy pet is with them.” With the stay-at-home orders suspending in-person visits, KPETS volunteers utilized social media and other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation, Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks,” Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are of them and how honored we were to be a part of their

lives during that most sad time.” With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a request at www.kpets.org. For insurance purposes and the safety and protection of all involved, visits cannot be in a private setting unless a third-party professional is present. KPETS welcomes additional volunteers, as the demand for its services is great. Interested individuals may apply on the aforementioned website. Also, individuals and organizations may partner with KPETS to ensure its continued operation. “KPETS does rely totally on community funding to provide our services free of charge,” Gerth ex plained. “Many of those we serve are nonprofits as well, making donations from businesses and private donors essential for KPETS’ sustainability.” Gerth noted that KPETS is not authorized to help anyone obtain emotional support animals. For more information about KPETS, readers may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387).

Rite Aid Launches Miracle Balloon Campaign Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s

hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies

have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer STEM Adventure!” brings many positive outcomes for children and their families. Educational goals for the program include learning about design principles, engaging in family conversations that help develop social and emotional skills, practicing making inferences, reflecting on content, discussing details and exploring careers.

IUs will distribute the resource bags and antennas to the following partner school districts and locations: Bermudian Springs, Tuscarora, Lincoln Charter School, West York, Upper Adams, Gettysburg, York Academy Regional Charter School, Chambersburg, School District of the City of York, LIU Early Childhood Classrooms, School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor School District, Steelton-Highspire Elementary (Salvation Army of Harrisburg), Susquehanna Township School District, Harrisburg School District and Camp Curtin YMCA. Any families that do not receive a resource bag but are

interested in participating in “Summer STEM Adventure!” can access the activity sheets, book list and extension activities at www.witf.org/stem.

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve

furnishings to kayaks and hunting bows. Gift certificates will be sold, and there will be special men’s and women’s auctions, as well as a children’s auction. Theme baskets, which have always been popular, will go up for bids as well. Special features this year will include a weekend getaway in Ocean City, N.J.; tickets to Eagles games; cornhole sets; a Traeger grill; and specialty meals, which include a pool party and dinner. During the auction, tickets will be sold to two special meals that will resemble the traditional Friday night meal and Saturday morning breakfast that have been held during the auction. Tickets are necessary to attend these events. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at LAMS. The second will be a dinner theater held on Saturday, Oct. 17. “The (dinner) meal

consists of roast beef, chicken, green beans, gourmet potatoes, and more,” wrote Burkholder. Following the dinner, there will be entertainment by Ryan and Friends. Burkholder noted that funds raised by the auction will help keep tuition costs down to allow more students to receive a Christian education at LAMS. Organizers hope to raise $150,000 from the event. Readers who are interested in bidding may preview the auction items and register at www.lamsauction.info. “(The) website directs (potential bidders) to the GiveSmart website (for) bidding,” explained Burkholder, who noted that bidders may register at any time. Fulton Theatre, in partnership with WGAL 8 in Lancaster, has announced a fundraising telethon event. Titled “This Is Our Home” and sponsored by Fulton Bank, the telethon will air live on WGAL 8 on Saturday, July 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. “This Is Our Home” will be hosted by WGAL’s Lori Burkholder and Brian Roche, with Fulton Theatre’s executive artistic producer, Marc Robin, as well as Curt Dale Clark, Jeffrey Coon, Nicole Hackmann, and Charis Leos. The telethon will feature performances by Broadway’s Kate Fahrner, Ciara Renée, and Kalyn West, with a guest appearance by Broadway performer and Lancaster native Jonathan Groff. Additional performances will be by Jeffrey Coon, Nathaniel Hackmann, Randy Jeter, Tarra Conner Jones, and Travis Taylor. The event will also include a special performance by Darius Harper and the Fulton Academy of Theatre students. Robin noted that the theme of the telethon refers to the Fulton Theatre’s role as a “home to the arts” in central Pennsylvania. On June 12, the Fulton Theatre announced the suspension of productions until late spring of 2021. Robin noted that the theater had originally planned to reopen in August, but that will not be possible. He added that during the pandemic, the theater has supported the community through making masks, gowns, and face shields for frontline workers. To maintain its financial health, the theater has decreased its staff size by 70%, including personnel across all areas of the theater. The theater estimates it will sustain over $2 million in lost revenue during its closure. It hopes to raise a portion of this

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank needs help to continue to meet the increased demand it is experiencing in the wake of COVID-19. Since March, food bank volunteers have packed more than

153,000 Crisis Response Boxes, and additional volunteers are needed to help pack more as the economic impact continues. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must sign up in advance by visiting www.centralpafoodbank.org or calling 717-5641700. They will then be scheduled at the food bank’s off-site Central Packing Operations facility, where they will be kept socially distanced while packing boxes for those in need. All volunteers must wear a mask and gloves, which can be provided by the food bank. They will be asked to sign a waiver indicating they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and have not come in contact with anyone experiencing symptoms in the past 14 days. finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhoodassist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely or “very involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200

Regardless of how many people are able to gather in one room, four outstanding women in the community will be honored. A new category has been added for young women ages 16 to 20. The YWCA also wants to offer a special opportunity and recognition for women who have served on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic, such as a health care worker, grocery store clerk, first responder, police woman, or anyone who was in the midst of the crisis and exhibited grace under fire while embracing the mission of YWCA. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, July 20. To nominate a woman, readers may visit https://ywcalancaster .org/womenofachievement/ and download a nomination packet. Partner opportunities are still available. For more information, readers may call 717-393-1735.

12 - MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - July 15, 2020

Church Offers Humanitarian Aid The Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently offered humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in three different ways. The effort utilized the centralized structure of the church, which has headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and local wards or congregations that are aware of needs in their own communities. The first effort was born of a request to Stan Walters, the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) director and a member of the Shrewsbury Ward, from Shen Kreiser at York County’s Office of Emergency Management requesting more hygiene kits for quarantine housing for persons experiencing homelessness. A pallet of 500 kits was sent from Salt Lake City on May 7. The rest will be used statewide by Pennsylvania VOAD. Then on May 14 food donations of

$500 each were delivered from the Bishops’ Storehouse in Baltimore, Md., to the York Food Bank, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries from church funds managed by the Stake Communication Council. A shipment of 40,000 pounds of food from Salt Lake City arrived at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg on May 20. Local leaders chose this particular food bank because it in turn supplies more than 1,000 food assistance programs in 27 counties. According to the church, 15 truckloads of commodities from its network of bishop’s storehouses are being delivered to food banks and other charitable organizations weekly across the country. Harrisburg Stake president Rhett Hintze serves as the senior leader of the church in the Harrisburg area.

Kavrina Kelly (left), on-site coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, recently received a truckload of food from Rhett Hintze, president of the Harrisburg Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The food donation arrived at the food bank from a church storehouse.
