Manheim Grace Brethren Plans Community Day By Chelsea Peifer

On Saturday, Aug. 3, area residents are invited to join the fun at the fifth annual Community Day on the back lawn at Manheim Grace Brethren Church, 333 E. High St., Manheim. People of all ages are welcome to attend the free, family-friendly event, which will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. A pig roast dinner will be served, along with hot dogs, side dishes, and beverages - all at no charge. Cotton candy and popcorn will also be available. A car show will take place in the church parking lot, and anyone is welcome to bring a special vehicle to display in the show. Other activities will include

a bounce house and inflatables, games, face painting, and bingo with food prizes. Organizer Warren Crills said that a Hungry Hungry Hippos inflatable, which allows people to compete in a life-size version of the popular children’s game, has been a crowd favorite in years past and will be back again this year. Crills explained that the annual event originated as a way for church members to reach out and share God’s love with the community. Last year, Crills said that torrential downpours the night before almost caused the event to be canceled, but organizers carried on and those who attended still had a good time. In years past, the event drew more than 200 attendees. See Community Day pg 2

A pig roast dinner, a car show, bingo, games, and children’s activities will all be part of the fifth annual Community Day at Manheim Grace Brethren Church from 3 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 3.

daughter of William F. Brossman, who founded the Denver and Ephrata Telephone and Telegraph Company (D&E Communications) in 1911. Blair’s employment with D&E Communications spanned 72 years until her death in 1985. At the time of her death, she was the president and chairman of the board of D&E Communications. Under the terms of Blair’s last will and testament, a significant portion of her estate was allocated to establish a perpetual charitable trust for scholarships to be awarded by the Ephrata National Bank, trustee. Applicants for the Brossman Scholarship must be high school seniors who plan to attend a college or postsecondary school. Applicants also must reside within the service area of the company formerly operating as D&E Communications. Each applicant is evaluated based on his or her academic record, financial need, extracurricular activities, and community service. The scholarship awards each recipient $3,000 per year for a period not to exceed four years. Smucker plans to attend Messiah College in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Podcasts To One On One With Jared Mees Examine Rock Ride To Support Four Diamonds Ford History Rock Ford Plantation has announced the launch of a series of podcasts about Gen. Edward Hand, who served as adjutant general to George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and the history of his home at Rock Ford. The series is produced by Heather Teysko, who has a long-running independent history podcast and has been broadcasting since 2009. Although she currently resides in Spain, Teysko grew up in Lancaster, where she served as a docent at Rock Ford while in high school. She has retained a strong interest in her former hometown and is enthusiastic about demonstrating how small museums can use podcasting to tell their stories to a wider audience. Teysko’s podcast is currently a three-episode miniseries consisting of her discussions with Rock Ford’s board president, executive director and curator. The first episode focuses on the life story of Hand. The second discusses Rock Ford in the broader context of Lancaster and American history, and the third episode is a walk-through of the first floor of the mansion with the curator, highlighting some items in the collection. The podcast may be found on www.rockfordplantation.org and will also be available on iTunes, SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify, Stitcher and all podcast apps. It may be found by searching for “Lancaster’s Hidden Gem of the Early American Republic. Rock Ford Plantation was built in 1794. It is located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, and is open for tours on Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from April to October. It is operated by the nonprofit Rock Ford Foundation. During that first week of classes, he called me and said he didn’t feel good, said Dustin’s mother, Christine Hogan. “He was a gamer, and he said that he couldn’t even play games because his hands weren’t feeling right. Hogan urged Dustin to go to the campus infirmary, and from there he was admitted into a hospital in Orlando. “He had surgery that night because they found a grapefruit-sized tumor on his brain, recalled Hogan, who was able to fly to Orlando to be with her son. Dustin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that typically affects people ages 10 to 20. He returned to Pennsylvania to receive treatment at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. After a courageous battle, Dustin passed away on Christmas Day in 2011 at age 23. “We were so fortunate to live near Hershey. Everyone there is absolutely wonderful. Their staff was so accommodating, and they really treat the whole person, Hogan remarked. Four Diamonds helped to cover Dustin’s medical expenses that were not covered by insurance, and now Hogan continues to raise money to give back to Four Diamonds and pay it forward

in any way that she can. Hogan is part of the Susquehanna Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG) 1903, a nonprofit motorcycle riding group based out of Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle in Elizabethtown. Susquehanna IMRG 1903 has been fundraising solely for Four Diamonds for the past three years through silent auctions and holiday cake roll sales, and now the group is hosting a special motorcycle ride to benefit Four Diamonds and its efforts to support local cancer patients and their families. On Saturday, July 20, the community is invited to a One on One With 2018 American Flat Track champion Jared Mees. Spots are limited to 50 motorcycles to take part in an exclusive ride that will begin and end at Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle, 2095 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Hernley’s sponsors Mees, who is a six-time Grand National champion, two-time X Games gold medalist, and twotime Troy Bayliss Classic winner. He was named Cycle News Rider of the Year in 2017. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and the ride will begin at 12:30 p.m. “Generally a guest for a ride like this will be in the beginning of the pack, but Jared’s going to start in the back and keep moving up through the group to ride with each of the participants, Hogan explained. The ride will follow country roads and covered bridges to Mees’ hometown of Honey Brook, where

Laura Lielbriedis of Lititz was named to the dean’s list at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., for the spring 2019 semester. In order to achieve dean’s

“Evita” from pg 1 worked herself to the top, not always making the best choices along the way, but I think her heart was always behind it,” said Tighe Howey. “It is one of those dream roles to get into, and it’s a little nervewracking,” she continued. “I admire her as a woman because she found a way to rise in a world where women just weren’t leaders. Her husband was in charge, but she kind of ruled the roost.” Additional cast members will include Kevin Ditzler as Juan Perón, Jared Korb as Che, Joe Kelly as Magaldi, and Cara Ditzler as the Mistress. Ensemble members include Stella Breese, Addison DeLuca, Elliot Ditzler, Norah Ditzler, Charlotte Evans, Emma Jahn, Liam Nornhold, Olivia Alberto,

Kyle Brubaker noted that future renovations to the former church sanctuary will include adding balcony seating to further increase seating capacity. “I’m really excited about the new space and what it has to offer,” said Brubaker. The Gallery Stage, where SSC performed “Company” earlier this year, will be set up with concessions for sale and tables to allow patrons to mingle during intermission as well as before and after the show. In addition to being the home of SSC, the Marietta Center for the Arts serves as a hub for educational opportunities with art-focused classes offered year-round for children and adults. Going forward, the venue will be available for rentals, including weddings and gatherings of various sizes. To learn more, readers may visit https://mariettaarts.org.

follows the true story of young and ambitious Eva Perón’s rise to power in Argentina. SSC actress Julia Tighe Howey, who will portray Eva, described the show as a rock opera that tells the story through songs like the mega-hit “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” “The music is fun and exciting and classic,” said Tighe Howey. A series of flashbacks follows Eva from her start as an impoverished child and teenager to how she became a woman of influence and power as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva was first lady from 1946 until she died in 1952 at the age of 33. “Eva is adored and worshipped by so many people. She came from absolutely nothing and

When the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC) moved into its new building at 2340 State St., East Petersburg, in 1968, one of the first things it did was launch an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group. Then, at pastor George Geisler’s behest, the church started a nursery school. While other ministries have come and gone during the past half-century, both the AA group and Trinity Preschool are still thriving. “We’re a place for people to come and find support and a place for families and children to learn and grow,” commented the Rev. Dr. Chris Rankin. The preschool opened with 15 students, and Geisler’s wife, Janice, was the first teacher. At the time, it was one of only three nursery schools in the area, Rankin reported. Over the years, enrollment increased, reaching a high of 90 in 1990. Currently, 63 children are registered for the 2019-20 school year. Trinity Preschool offers morning classes for youngsters ages 2 through 5, as well as afternoon classes for 4and 5-year-olds. Rankin and preschool director Sean McKelvey hope that families that have been involved with the school in the past five decades will attend a celebration of the preschool’s 50th anniversary that will be held in conjunction with Trinity UCC’s fifth annual Friendship Fest on Sunday, July 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. Anyone else who would like to enjoy food, fun, and entertainment is also invited to attend the event. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. “The third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. Friendship Fest started as a way to invite the community to Trinity

Dr. Chris Rankin invite the community to attend the fifth annual Friendship Fest and 50th anniversary celebration of the preschool at Trinity UCC in East Petersburg on July 21. students receive there. At Trinity Preschool, students are guided to develop physically, emotionally, and socially. They learn the basics of critical thinking, stimulate language development, begin to self-regulate, and build a foundation for future learning. Trinity Preschool is an outreach commission of Trinity UCC, but it is not faith-based, which Rankin noted has increased the diversity of the attendees. There are two exceptions: Grace is said at meals to model gratitude, and Rankin gives a lesson on the story of Christmas in December. For more information about Trinity Preschool, readers may email McKelvey at preschool@trinityeastpete.org. Folks with questions about Friendship Fest may call the church office at 717-569-1632.

for ice cream,” Rankin explained, adding that the event is organized by the church’s evangelism committee. Ice cream, hot dogs, and beverages will be served at the event. A variety of games will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. Face painting will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. A cake walk, which McKelvey described as “musical chairs with cake,” will also take place. A bounce house will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. To close out the event, beginning at 6 p.m., Fred “Phredd” McNaughton will perform family-friendly songs while accompanying himself with a ukulele. Additionally, during the event, the church building will be open. McKelvey and the rest of the preschool staff members plan to be on hand . McKelvey has served as preschool director for two years. Jill LaVenice is the newest teacher; she attended Trinity Preschool as a child. Betty Cox, who is an assistant with the twoand three-day classes, is the longest-serving staff member, with 32 years. “My son attended, so I knew it was a good place,” Cox said of her decision to work at the preschool. “It’s fun to work with children and see them grow. They have fun in learning, they make friendships, and they feel good and confident.” Trinity Preschool uses playbased curricula, and while there are certainly teacher-directed activities, there are also plenty of opportunities for independent play and learning. The school works with the Hempfield School District to ensure that students are prepared to enter kindergarten, or as McKelvey called it, “big kids’ school.” He noted that calling elementary school “real school” undermines the legitimacy of preschool and the education

There is a per-person fee for the programs, which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, unless otherwise noted. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. GPS Tic-Tac-Toe for people of all ages will be held on Friday, July 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will receive a tic-tac-toe card with geocaches to locate. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will provide instruction on the use of handheld

Registrants are asked to indicate the number of GPS units required, and they should plan to leave their keys or driver’s license if borrowing a unit. Adults must accompany children. Junior Girl Scout Animal Habitats for girls age 8 and up will take place on Saturday, July 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. Naturalist Ann Strauss will lead Junior Girl Scouts through the requirements for the Animal Habitats Badge. Muddy Mess, for people age 4 and up, will take place on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 1 p.m. at Campsite 5, 19 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position. For more information, readers may visit www.schreiber pediatric.org.

Bible2School has announced that Grace EC Church in East Petersburg has signed on to take the lead in activating a Bible2School program for a new elementary school. This coming fall, Bible2School will be offered to second-graders at Bucher Elementary School in Manheim Township School District under the guidance and organization of Gwen Marinaro. Bible2School is a program that provides free elective Bible classes during the school day to elementary school children attending public school. The children walk or are bused to a nearby church or partner location
