LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer
Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.

Although temperatures are more like 93 degrees instead of 39, a group of Woodcrest Villa residents is thinking Christmas. The seventh annual Christmas in July school supplies drive will be held from Tuesday, July 24, through Tuesday, July 31. A kickoff celebration will be held at 7 p.m. on July 24 in Gamber Auditorium, which is located within the VIVA Centre on Woodcrest Villa’s campus, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. “We’ll have a little music, a little laughter,” co-founder Barbara Smith said of the celebration. “That’s the best part:

eating homemade Christmas cookies!” The program will feature musical performances as well as group singing of carols, and resident Dee Harnish will read a Pennsylvania Dutch translation of Clement Moore’s poem “The Night Before Christmas.” Refreshments - including the cookies that Barbara mentioned - will be provided. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to order school supplies for donation to the program. Volunteer Dennis Good explained that the group has put an efficiency measure in place to improve the shopping process. As in previous years, group members will offer school supplies for residents to buy and donate. This service enables folks who are unable to shop off-campus to participate in the supplies drive. This year, however, the group will take orders for items, which Dennis will order in bulk and ship directly to the Families in Transition program. Families in Transition began more than 20 years ago in the School District of Lancaster and has since spread to incorporate 17 Lancaster County school districts. The program aims to remove barriers to education for homeless children by helping to provide school supplies, clothing, transportation to school, and other basic needs. Christmas in July accepts donations of cash in addition to school supplies; the funds have been used to purchase school uniforms and other necessities, including laundry detergent. In 2017, more than 10,000 items were donated, and financial contributions amounted to almost $4,000. Barbara noted that $500 is earmarked for the Hempfield School District, as that is where the retirement community is located. She related a conversation with her contact at the district who requested some of those funds be used for laundry
Woodcrest Villa residents who have organized the seventh annual Christmas in July school supplies drive are (from left) Pat Smith, Barbara Smith, Suzanne Burger, Harvey Meyer, and Nancy and Dennis Good. Following a kickoff celebration on July 24, the drive will run through July 31. detergent. The contact explained that the school nurses all have access to washers and dryers, and when children come to school in unclean clothing, the nurses are able to provide the students with a fresh set of clothing to wear while they launder the clothing. “That’s a really touching story,” Barbara remarked. Accounts like those are why Barbara, Dennis, and others participate in Christmas in July. “It’s fun to do something with the younger generation,” remarked program co-founder Pat Smith, who is not related to Barbara. “We have so many former school teachers, nurses, and principals who live here,” Barbara explained. “They’re so touched by this program (because they remember their
own students). They like selecting things themselves if they’re mobile.” Items for the project may be placed in decorated boxes in several areas on campus. Members of the public may drop off items at the VIVA Centre, and cash contributions may be made at the center’s front desk. The school supplies requested are crayons, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, pink erasers, glue sticks, safety scissors, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, three-ring notebook paper, composition books, and backpacks. Personal care items will also be accepted, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, socks, hairbrushes, combs, and hair picks. For more information about Christmas in July, readers may call Barbara at 717-391-3627.

communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training
The Mount Joy Chamber is self-funded with member dues and upgraded memberships and two yearly fundraisers: the annual banquet and benefit auction held each spring and the chicken barbecue held on the third Saturday in August every year. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works fulltime as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

director of BVI, explained that the organization has endeavored to bring the Bible to children and adults in three ways. “We have visualized Bible lessons, which we are updating with a colorization process; visualized biographies of missionaries and other Christians from different eras; and visualized songs for children to sing and (take part in) worship together,” said Luttmann. BVI held its 59th anniversary banquet, with a gathering of nearly 300 attendees, on May 10. Tim Keesee, executive director with Frontline Missions International, served as keynote speaker. Frontline is an organization known for taking the Gospel into difficult regions of the world. The choice of Keesee as speaker was appropriate, as BVI began when Odenwelder was directing Child Evangelism Fellowship outreaches and searching for a publishing ministry to supply the needs of local clubs. “(BVI) started supplying local needs for Bible clubs that were hosted in people’s backyards,” explained Luttmann. “It’s a ministry that grew in scope with Helen’s vision to supply materials not just locally but internationally.” Updating materials that were created some years ago has been an important goal for BVI. Luttmann explained how help in accomplishing that feat is being provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps reaching as many as 18,000 children in a camp - in India. BVI had worked with Gunti to translate and print materials for his gatherings, and Gunti decided to return the favor. During a visit to BVI a few years ago, Gunti brought a thumb drive of updated BVI materials in full color. “It would have cost us

Gunti uses BVI materials, and his work is one example of how the ministry reaches out to spread the Gospel to all nations. quite a bit (to update those materials, so Gunti’s gift) has provided a good foundation,” Luttmann noted. Locally, BVI has worked with Bible2School, a Manheim-based mentorship program that offers free, weekly Bible elective classes for public school students in several Lancaster County school districts. “(Bible2School) is growing, and they needed more visuals to go with their curriculum,” said Luttmann. “It would be an expensive process (for Bible2School) to have new illustrations put together, (so) we looked through our curriculum and found visuals that would match their lessons.” Luttmann said BVI is in the process of transforming offerings to give more options to those who need them. “We have great resources, but they don’t have to be in just (one) format,” Luttmann said. “There’s a new generation of children and ministry workers who know more about technology, and they are looking for resources they can download or put on a tablet.” BVI is working to make resources available digitally and
as downloads, and Luttmann is excited to see where the materials are being utilized. “There are huge opportunities in technology to get resources to ministry partners.” In addition to special licensing agreements that allow for the use of materials by others, Luttmann described another opportunity that came through an online retailer that offers ondemand printing so that individuals in other countries can have copies of BVI materials printed closer to home. Gordon Denlinger, who serves as treasurer for the organization, called BVI a hidden gem and noted that volunteers are needed to serve the organization in a variety of capacities. “It doesn’t get any better than helping children see Jesus and come to know Him in a faith way,” he said. “We want to make sure the Gospel is being presented.” BVI, a nonprofit organization located at 650 Main St., Akron, is overseen by a ninemember board. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a

For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.” The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance, language, art, education, and international cultural exchange. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity to create and play instruments from some nontraditional materials,” she explained. “It’s going to be a blast!” Sommer Singspiel, which in German means “play and sing

There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly than utilizing the foster care system. To help raise funds to support the work of Safe Families, BCS will hold a golf tournament on
Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the dinner and prize presentation will start at 5:30 p.m. Contests will include a hickory stick drive and cumulative par 3 greenies, among others. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available. Interested individuals may register at www.bethany.org/Lancaster /Events. Readers may also register by calling 717-399-3213 or emailing driddell@bethany.org. According to Romberger, Safe Families is a national organization that started 15 years ago. The local chapter opened in Dauphin County in 2011, and the Lancaster branch began serving clients about five years ago. The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host
families within the chapter. “We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those utilizing the service,” said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis.” According to Romberger, advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved,” said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family.” In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. The organization works closely with all parties involved to provide support until the crisis has passed, an average of 45 days. A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time,” said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network.” Romberger added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment
for an illness, such as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right out of the hospital when he was (only) four days old,” said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as sleeping schedules. “It was a good transition,” said O’Neill, who noted that the birth mother called the host mother the first time the baby was ill. “When (the birth mother was) reunited (with the baby, the
host mother gave her) a picture book of all the things they had done together,” O’Neill added. Referrals come from a number of sources, and many clients call Safe Families themselves. “We call people back within 24 hours,” noted Romberger. O’Neill noted that the organization is actively seeking to network with area churches for a variety of reasons. “We are looking to engage with new churches,” she noted. “That’s where we get our partners from.” Readers who would like to learn more about Safe Families may visit www.safe-families.org or call 717-238-3549.

2018 Triathlon Scheduled
Participants in the 2018 Lititz recCenter triathlon will have the opportunity to swim, bike, and run as individuals or as part of a team. This year’s event will be held on Aug. 5 beginning at 8 a.m. at the rec center.
Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, is happy to see participation in the organization’s annual adult triathlon growing. “Last year, we had 172 (participants), and we had 10 teams,” said Ababou, who recalled that in 2017 triathlon organizers focused on encouraging more teams to sign up. This year’s triathlon, for people age 16 and older, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5, with the race beginning at 8 a.m. at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. According to Ababou, participants will be staged by age group.
“Teams can be two or three,” explained Ababou. “We can have one swimmer and (the other) can bike and run or teams can have three (participants).” Ababou noted that families, co-workers, groups of church members, or workout buddies can all make up teams. For 2018, Ababou would like to see even more teams take part in the event. As in the past, participants will swim 300 meters in the outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles in Lititz. This year’s courses will be the same as before, with the bike portion taking competitors

“We’re partnering to get cats adopted, Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.
Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. Furever Home operates a feline sanctuary and adoption center at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, while the Pet Pantry, headquartered at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, cares for cats and other animals, offers

help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home), Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County. The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be welcome. The Pet Pantry’s canine ambassador, Sasha, is slated to be on hand to meet with shoppers. More than 100 vendors, crafters, and local businesses have registered to participate in the event, which Furever Home fundraising chair Tina Krueger has carefully coordinated.
“I want the consumer to have a wonderful shopping experience, Krueger said. The first 100 adults to visit the shopping fair will receive goodie bags. There will be opportunities to win prizes and to participate in a vendor passport game. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are enough volunteers to run concessions rather than outsourcing to a food truck. A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as at Water Street Mission. “We’re trying to touch as many people as possible, Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach. Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that Furever Home can use folks to clean the adoption center or to attend networking events to provide education about the organization. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the summer shopping fair, and sponsorships are available. Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world.
Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Over 25 years ago, an ankle injury led Mary down a challenging path. “The doctors thought my ankle was bruised, but it turned out to be locked up. Eventually I had to have surgery to fuse my ankle, Mary recalled. “Then my hip replacement left me with additional pain and limited mobility. Luckily, Mary is a long-time patient of Dr. Tim Brennan of Brennan Chiropractic in Annville. He is helping people ease their debilitating pain and regain their physical independence without surgery or endless pain medications. “I’m on my feet all day at work and at the end of the day, my ankle and hip ached, said Mary. “Dr. Brennan suggested that I try MLS Laser Therapy. Though lasers been in use for over 35 years, MLS Laser Therapy is a noninvasive, state-of-the-art breakthrough in restoring patient mobility, with no known side effects. In just one 15 minute comfortable treatment, patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including degenerative joint conditions and sports injuries, are on their way to relief. “MLS Laser Therapy is unique because it treats both Brennan. “The MLS Laser works by sending photons of light deep into damaged tissue, which recharge and stimulates the cells. The cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster, and ‘kick-start’ the healing process. Mary had one round of treatments, plus deep tissue massage on her sore hip. “The MLS Laser really made a difference, she reports. “I can make it through the day now. I’ve told people at work with back pain to give the MLS Laser a shot!

on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. Travel agencies should not be overlooked. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. Traveling as part of a group is also an option. Fort Indiantown Gap is scheduled to host live-fire training exercises during the month of July between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Exercises will include artillery training from Monday, July 23, through Thursday, July 26. Fort Indiantown Gap has announced training as a courtesy to nearby residents, as it is expected to result in increased noise levels. The training schedule is subject to change based on the military training mission. Fort Indiantown Gap is the only live-fire, maneuver military training facility in Pennsylvania. It serves as headquarters to the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Pennsylvania National Guard and offers more than 17,000 acres and 140 training areas and facilities for year-round training. The installation balances one of the region’s most ecologically diverse areas with a military mission that annually supports 20,000 Pennsylvania National Guard personnel and more than 120,000 additional personnel from other branches of service, multinational partners and interagency partners at the federal, state and local levels. To learn more about Fort Indiantown Gap, readers may visit www.ftig.png.pa.gov or www.face book.com/ftindiantowngap. Individuals may call the installation’s community information line at 717-8612007 to hear a recorded message with dates and times of community activities and training events.
