he Manheim Historical Society is celebrating the region’s botanical heritage with a special series, and you’re invited. The series, which began in July, will continue during 1st Thursdays in Manheim from 5 to 8 p.m. On Thursday, Aug. 4, “Making Soap” will be in the spotlight, with a

Tina Sams

The presentations and demonstrations will be offered by Essential Herbal, a Lancaster-based business run by Tina Sams and Maryanne Schwartz. “They’ve written a couple of books, and they publish a magazine about herbs,” said Sharry Theal, events chair for the Manheim Historical Society. “They know a lot about the subject of botanicals.” The 1st Thursday programs will operate in a drop-in format, with Sams and Schwartz providing demonstrations and information about each topic. “It will be focused on history and the common thread that we share today with what they had back in the old days,” Theal stated. “It will be a way for people to see how what we have today was used back then.” Essential Herbal items, including handmade soaps, salves, sniffing jars, nature print silk scarves and books, will be for sale at the presentations. The botanicals series will wrap up

with a presentation from Ferich on how to participate in The Community Wildlife Habitat Program. It will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St. Native plants will be for sale from Hungry Hook Plant Farm in Bainbridge. For more information on the botanicals series, visit https://manheimhistoricalsociety.org.

demonstration. On Thursday, Sept. 1, the program will feature “Preserving Herbs,” with tips for drying herbs for teas and the 10 most useful herbs for staying healthy over the winter. Also on Sept. 1, Linda Ferich of the Lancaster Conservancy Community Wildlife Habitat Program will provide a native plant display, information about the program and free plants. All of the dates will feature a display of 18thcentury botanicals and their uses by the Manheim Historical Society. The programs will be presented in the Fasig House, 30 E. High St. “We were looking for something new and different to offer, something that people would be interested in learning more about,” said Susan Williams, president of the Manheim Historical Society. “We’re looking for ideas to draw people to visit our sites, and this seemed like something that would attract a wide range of people.”

In the early days of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21, the summer camp program served 25 or fewer campers. When Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, wanted parents to see pictures of what the children did at camp, she simply asked the nurse to take photos. Staff and campers worked together to create a memory book for each child to take home. “Once we got big (serving more than 200 campers), the nurse didn’t have the time (to take photos),” recalled Paskoff. Instead, Paskoff turned to community members and asked them to help. “We want the community to see our kids,” said Paskoff. “A lot of people think kids with disabilities are really limited, so we bring them here so they can see (our

Melissa Schaeffer, who work at the Penn Square Fulton location in Lancaster, all donated their time to take photos of the campers. The three women had responded to an email from Fulton coordinator Karen Landis. Marzella has a daughter with special needs, and she has been volunteering with the Best Buddies program at her daughter’s school for several years. Her sensitivity in this area led her to volunteer. Mountain, who lives in Mountville, said that she has volunteered with Aaron’s Acres for three years and with the Special Olympics for several years. She noted that her career is in banking, but she has a degree in therapeutic recreation and she enjoys helping out. Schaeffer, of Washington Boro, had volunteered with Aaron’s Acres when the camp was in Manheim. She said that she had a niece with special needs who

has passed away. “She was a delight in our lives,” she recalled, adding, “It’s amazing to watch these kids have such a great time with this experience.” Two days into camp at a new location in New Holland, Paskoff was pleased with the results of moving the sixweek summer program. “Yesterday did not feel like the first day,” she said. “We are in our new location. Not one kid had a problem with the transition.” Paskoff noted that the recognizable yellow T-shirts of all camp staff members, the daily schedule, and the intentional routine of the camp days have helped to make the change to a new place easier. Paskoff noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

PA residents scramble to get State Silver Bank Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because they are the only Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. “The phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone will be trying to get them while they still can,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania

State Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1947 and there can never be any more which moves them into the collectible coin status. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walk-

ing Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Roll is a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents and non-state residents must pay full price if any remain. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Bank Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

Q GOT ‘EM: These are the only Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. Each Bank Roll is loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars some dating back to the early 1900’s so everyone who wants them better hurry.

Only State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value starting at 7:30 am today PENNSYLVANIA - “Pennsylvania residents get first dibs. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. Beginning at precisely 7:30 am this morning State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “But here’s the good news. The Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents only and non-state residents must pay full price if any Bank Rolls remain,” Lynne confirmed This is important to note. “These are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist. You can’t get them at banks or credit unions or the Government since they do not produce State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls. In fact, you can only get them bearing the exclusive State Restricted Design and rolled this way directly from National Mint and Treasury,” Lynne

explained. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident while they still can,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars found inside the Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are 90% pure silver so Pennsylvania residents who get their hands on them will be glad they did,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because state residents who miss the deadline and non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “U.S. Gov’t issued coins like these are 90% pure silver and a favorite of dealers, collectors and the like,” Lynne said. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So the only thing readers need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication,” Lynne said. Q

SILVER: One of the last Silver coins minted for circulation

LAST MINTED: in Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco

STATE MINIMUM: Of just $39 per coin set by National Mint and Treasury

ENLARGED: Year varies 1916-1947

RARELY SEEN: Minted by the U.S. mint in the early 1900’s

TO CLAIM THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE BANK ROLLS CALL: 1-800-260-7945 EXT. WHH1041 Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberty Half Dollars were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. So there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberty Half Dollars date back to the early 1900’s and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know Walking Liberties are collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-260-7945 Ext. WHH1041 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

As the summer heats up, cool down at the Rissers Mennonite Church community picnic. “This year, we have a water theme, and we’re going to have a water slide,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee. The event will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 4 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, Aug. 13. The picnic will also feature activities focused on creatures in the creek on-site as well as games involving water. A beef barbecue picnic meal will be served. Arlene noted that the church chose a verse from John 7 to represent the picnic’s theme. “Just as water is essential to our physical lives, Jesus offers living water for our spiritual lives,” she said. The event’s theme complements efforts by the church to support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Arlene remarked. “They help communities around the world have access to clean water,” she explained. “We’ll be collecting donations for them.” The congregation has been following a giving calendar this year, featuring information and activities to highlight water usage and raise funds. tive from MCC will be at the picnic to accept donations and promote the organization’s water ministry. The annual picnic is a way for the congregation to get to know people in the community, said pastor Daryl Heistand. “We also want to provide a safe place to gather and enjoy the blessings God has provided,” he stated. Arlene emphasized that anyone in the community is invited to the picnic, whether they’ve attended before or they are coming for the first time. “We want to bless our neighborhood with food and fun,” she said. “It’s a chance to get to know other people and make some new friends. We want our neighborhood to know we are here as a church, a group of people who love Jesus and follow His call. We can offer prayer and spiritual help in time of need.”

Summer Bash To Support Kids BY CATHY MOLITORIS

30. It will feature food, drinks, live music, games and more, all to benefit the SLK Foundation. “The foundation is named for the founder’s nephew, Sean Louis Kisielnicki, which is where the letters ‘SLK’ come from,” explained Brittany Garner, event co-chair. The foundation was created by Stephen Trott in 2016, when Trott began looking for

ways to help his nephew, who was diagnosed with Hunter syndrome. Trott soon realized that other families needed help for their children with rare diseases as well, and the foundation was born. “Insurance pays for a lot when you have a sick child, but if you have a rare disease, it’s often harder to get funding through insurance,” explained Garner. “We raise funds for everything from wheelchair ramps to wheelchairs, beds, car seats, medical equipment, medication, meals during hospital stays. We support the child and the family however they need it.” Families of children with rare diseases often face financial burdens, she noted. “If you have a kiddo who requires 24-hour care, you’re usually down to one income because one parent is home with the child and can’t work,” she stated. Garner and Bradshaw came up with the idea for the Summer Bash as a way to not only raise funds for the organization, but also spread the word about its mission. “Everybody does a gala,” Garner said, noting that she has attended many for worthy causes. “This is something much more casual. It doesn’t have to be fancy to be fun. We’re all there to support the cause and to have fun. It’s casual dress, so come as you are.” The evening will feature a summer buffet menu by Chef Autry, a cash bar, cornhole and other yard games, live music from Bit-O-Blues and giveaway baskets. Items up for grabs will include jewelry, makeup, Barnstormers tickets, gas cards, car detailing and more. The event will be held both indoors and outside, Garner noted, with plenty of room for indoor-only activities if the weather does not cooperate. The event is sponsored by The Solar Girl. The foundation has set a fundraising goal of $10,000 for the Summer Bash, with proceeds benefiting families throughout central Pennsylvania. “There’s a tagline for the foundation which I really like that says, ‘A disease may be rare, but hope should not be,’” said Bradshaw. “That’s what this event is about - raising money to give these families hope.” For more information or to purchase tickets for the SLK Summer Bash, visit https://tinyurl.com/y9sah7d5.
