Business Collaborates With Brittany’s Hope To Build Homes By Chelsea Peifer
As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the pay-it-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. Through pay-it-forward, Life Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000
being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, however, would be new for the company. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtownbased nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being an adoptive mom myself, their mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director Mai-Lynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house See Brittany’s Hope pg 5
A Growing Adventure
Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund (right) got to meet Miss Lieu (left) during a May trip to Vietnam with Brittany’s Hope. Fredlund and her company helped to raise nearly $15,000 to build homes for families in need in Vietnam through Brittany’s Hope, including one for Miss Lieu and her children.

A recent Garden to Table camp offered at Hamilton Elementary School for students in the School District of Lancaster was just one of the many summer programs led by The Edible Classroom.
The Edible Classroom Wraps Up Fruitful Summer By Chelsea Peifer
Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with students throughout Lancaster County.
From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. The second Wednesday in August will once again see the occurrence of the Salunga Community Picnic. The 78th annual event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Although the picnic is named for its location, attendance is open to everyone, regardless of residency. “There’s this (wrong) idea that you have to live in Salunga to come. You can live in Landisville to come. You can live anywhere. Invite your neighbor. That’s the whole point,” said Karen Haldeman, who has taken over coordinating the picnic from Stacey Cooper. Cooper had been the coordinator for an estimated 10 years and remains on the picnic committee. “I don’t want to see the picnic go away,” Haldeman said to explain her willingness to assume leadership of the event. Cooper and Haldeman have worked together on the picnic committee, which is always open to new members. “We need more volunteers,” Cooper added. “People say they like (the picnic), but it’s hard to get help. We feel like the event fails or succeeds on us. We need more community in our community event.” The picnic will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with the women’s games, which have been changed to include anyone over age 13. When the first picnic was held on Aug. 6, 1941, the schedule included dozens of games for women and children. “Women didn’t have jobs, and kids were out of school, so they had time to play,” Cooper explained. “Now we come from work, pick up a pizza at Hot Z, and show up late,” Haldeman quipped. The opening games will be organized by Jen McFarland Swope, who lives two hours away. She is filling in for her cousin, who is on vacation. “(Swope) said it’s kind of like a family reunion for her (to come back to the area where she grew up),” Haldeman related. will perform a magic show for children from 5:20 to 5:50 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own meals and place settings. The picnic committee will provide ice cream, chips, and beverages. This year, the after-dinner schedule has been slightly adjusted. Door prize winners will be announced throughout the evening instead of only at the end. They will be interspersed with a children’s peanut scramble at 6:45 p.m., a cake walk at 7 p.m., the announcement of guessing game winners at 7:45 p.m., and special games at 8:15 p.m. Local businesses have donated items for the door prize drawing, and everybody who attends will receive an entry. “We request a dollar, but it’s not required to get a ticket for the door prizes,” Cooper said. “We appreciate a donation. They help to keep the picnic going.” The committee also raises funds through prize drawings for themed baskets. This year’s baskets are slated to include a back-to-school theme from the Landisville Church of God, another theme, and a surprise. The Salunga Community Picnic will be held rain or shine. Folks who would like to volunteer to help with the event may call Haldeman at 717-898-0989.

fish and insects within a waterway can indicate the overall health of the creek through the hands-on experience as they get their hands and feet wet. The creek stomp will be led by Matt Kofroth, a watershed specialist with the Lancaster County Conservation District who has been leading this event and others throughout the county for several years. Gergely said that last year’s event had a great crowd; however, due to the tremendous amounts of rain, Rife Run was running very high so organizers opted not to send participants into the creek. Instead, Kofroth pulled out a variety of macroinvertebrates for everyone to examine. “The stream bank restoration projects along Rife Run, both in Mummau and Logan parks, have really helped with flood control in lesser storm events and with water quality,” said Gergely. He
noted that an observation platform at Mummau Park and a pedestrian bridge over the creek at Logan Park, located just across the street, both offer great vantage points to view the restoration work. CCWA members will be available at the creek stomp to answer questions and provide information about the organization’s other ongoing efforts to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Watershed. CCWA meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Rapho Township building, 971 N. Colebrook Road, Manheim. New members and interested individuals are always welcome to attend. To learn more, readers may visit http://chiquescreekwatershed.org or www.facebook.com/ChiquesCreek WatershedAlliance.
crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of
them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculumbased garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclassroom.org/5k -registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom.org. Volunteers are welcome to serve in various capacities.
“The creek stomp is a great opportunity to get in the creek and explore,” said CCWA president Steve Gergely. “What we’re looking for specifically at the creek stomp are macroinvertebrates. It’s not something that I did as a kid, but my kids enjoy it every year.” Old shoes or sandals that can get wet are recommended, as attendees are encouraged to wade into the water and explore. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Accordingly to Gergely, the purpose of the creek stomp, which has become an annual event due to its success and popularity, is to discover the life within backyard streams and creeks. Organizers hope that participants will learn more about how the

members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project. One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the organization’s homes for children, as she was lacking means to repair the home, pay medical bills from her husband’s illness, and cover living expenses. Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home,
complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing, Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me. Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see
those families, described Fredlund. In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope, remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back. For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittany shope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Fredlund and her colleagues set a goal of raising $7,500 - a bit more than the approximately $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. That meant Life Changes was able to contribute toward building homes for two families. The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club recently made a float for a local parade. At the first 4-H meeting of the year, club leader Katina Musser let club members know that a chairperson for the club float committee was needed. A recent transfer to the club, Meghan Becker, decided to take on that role. Meghan is a 16year-old who, until a few years ago, lived in Dublin, Ireland. This was her first time participating in a community club, but she has an interest in art, along with experience organizing events through her church, where her dad is a pastor. After sketching a design for the float, Meghan sent a picture to Musser, and thus started the journey of creating the float. As the only member of the committee, Meghan took on most parts of the leadership process. Her grandfather helped to build parts of the project based on her ideas. Many other members of the club helped as well, including Xavier, who helped with much of the pre-planning, and Jenavieve, who showed up to every work day. The main concept behind the float was to show off different projects that 4-H offers, such as agriculture and woodworking. The concept was well received by the parade audience, and the club hopes to use it in the future at other parades. 4-H is a youth education program of Penn State Extension. It is a nonformal program for youths between the ages of 8 and 18, and a 4-H Cloverbud Program is also available for youths ages 5 to 8. 4-H extends the knowledge base of the land grant university system to youths to help them develop life skills in citizenship and
Americans for the Arts has honored “This Neighborhood Is …” among 50 outstanding public arts projects created in 2018 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, a national program that specifically recognizes compelling public art. Chosen by public art experts, the roster of selected projects was unveiled on June 14 at Americans for the Arts’ annual convention in Minneapolis. This is the 18th year that Americans for the Arts has recognized public art works. The mural, a public art project led by Lancaster residents Salina Almanzar and Osmyn Oree, was installed on the façade of the Water Street Mission along South Water Street, across from Culliton Park, in September 2018. Residents were invited to finish the sentence, “This neighborhood is” and sit for a portrait. Over three days in September, Almanzar and Oree, along with volunteers from the community, installed 20 portraits

All participants were invited to help install the mural. Volunteers were provided lunch during each day of installation and were gifted a free print of their portrait as a thank-you. The mural was the final product of four months of community engagement regarding the renovation of Culliton Park. Two independent public art
experts - artist Seitu Jones of St. Paul, Minn., and Aaron Ott, curator of public art at Albirght Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y. - discussed the trends they uncovered while examining hundreds of submissions in selecting this year’s choices for the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2018. aging and the steps people may take to improve or maintain overall health in each area. These four areas are cognitive activity, physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, and social engagement. There is no cost to attend the course, but space is limited. For more information or to register, readers may call Extension Registration Services at 877345-0691. They may also register at https://extension.psu .edu/alzheimers-disease -healthy-living-for-your-brain -and-body. Registration will be open until Wednesday, Aug. 21, or until full.
Heisey noted that disc golf is a sport growing rapidly in the nation and particularly in southcentral Pennsylvania. The 2019 Amateur Disc Golf World Championships were held from July 20 to 27 across 10 courses in York and Lancaster counties, drawing nearly 700 competitors from 11 countries, 43 states, and three provinces, according to www.pdga.com. “Adding a new course (in Mount Joy) is a great way to grow the sport of disc golf and expand the availability of the sport to people in new areas,” said Heisey, who has been playing the sport for seven years and has been a member of LAFS for five years. In addition to Ship Rock and Muddy Run, other disc golf courses in the county are located at Herr Park, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Park, and Manor Township Park in Lancaster, along with Roland Park in Akron. “Disc golf is a fun, family-friendly, and cost-effective way for people in the community to spend time outdoors,” Heisey described. LAFS conducts weekly league events that can draw more than 50 players on any given day, as well as tournaments throughout the summer, Heisey said. LAFS is dedicated to the well-being of its courses and the parks that hold them, operating according to its mission: “To grow and improve the sport of disc golf in Lancaster County and the surrounding areas by bringing together new and experienced players, promoting a friendly environment for club members, and bridging the gap between Lancaster Disc Golf Club and the community.” For more information on LAFS, readers may visit http://lafs-disc-golf.squarespace.com/.
Plans are underway for a nine-hole disc golf course to be installed throughout Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. Local residents Ben Heisey and Dave Christian had the idea for the course and consulted with Travis Dombach, a council member with Lancaster Area Frisbee Sports (LAFS), about potential course designs for the park, as Dombach was a key designer for the Ship Rock Disc Golf Course in Willow Street and the Muddy Run Disc Golf Course in Holtwood. The trio proposed the idea to the Mount Joy Borough Public Works Committee in September 2018 and the Mount Joy Borough Council in October 2018, and the idea was met with unanimous approval at both meetings. Heisey and Christian anticipate that the course will be installed between the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020, with the help of donations from local businesses and community members to cover the cost of equipment, signs, and installation. The course will primarily be constructed by community volunteers and LAFS members, with some tasks - like pouring the concrete tee pads - requiring hired help. Heisey said that the total estimated cost of the project is between $5,000 and $6,000, which organizers are working to raise through sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Prominent sponsors will receive recognition on the course overview sign and at the individual tee signs. Once funds are raised, Heisey said the construction of the course at Little Chiques Park should take no Pictured on front: Area resimore than two months to complete. dents and businesses have the Individuals, organizations, and business- opportunity to sponsor tees es interested in donating toward the project may email bsheisey@gmail.com for more information or pick up a sponsorship form at the Mount Joy Borough Office, 21 E. Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. The girls, from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, will learn about selfesteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health, consisting of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. Hundreds of volunteer coaches facilitate the curriculum, and their efforts are sponsored by LOA Orthodontics. The program will prepare the girls for the Girls on the Run 5K, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Millersville University at 9 a.m. The event will be presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster. The girls will select running buddies to join and encourage them on the course. The 5K event is a fundraiser and is open to the community. Girls on the Run of Lancaster and Lebanon, part of Girls on the Run International, is a nonprofit, physical-activity based, positive youth development program. The character development organization combines the healthy activity of running with an interactive 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living.
