Ron Young (left) and Dave Garner worked on replacing a portion of a local resident’s ceiling as part of The Manheim Project, which took place from July 16 to 27.

The Manheim Project once again brought together hundreds of individuals from local churches this summer as they collectively worked toward the same goal of showing love and compassion through good deeds to the Manheim community. From July 16 to 27, volunteers sporting blue T-shirts emblazoned with The Manheim Project name and logo could be spotted assisting Manheim-area residents with work projects including repairs to porches and ceilings, power washing, patio cleanup, scraping and painting projects, carpentry work,

plumbing repairs, weeding, landscaping, trash removal, and other miscellaneous tasks. Ephrata, Lititz, and Manheim all host similar work camp projects in their communities. Each one is coordinated through Love INC of Lancaster County, which refers to the initiative as The Compassion Project. The project is publicized several weeks in advance through flyers and newspaper advertisements with a telephone number for area residents to call if they have a need. Love INC then fields all the calls and connects each church with service work according to the number of volunteers and skill sets they have to offer. Cleaning windows was among the tasks that Pat Loercher completed as part of The Manheim Project. The service project matches volunteers from area churches with work projects requested by area residents in need of assistance.

SVGTO To Hold All Pontiac Show Lace Up For Orphans By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states,” SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight.” Last year’s show was the 10th hosted

by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Pontiacs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a See All Pontiac Show pg 8

Pontiacs will once again fill the lawn of Amos Herr Park in Landisville when the Susquehanna Valley GTO hosts the 11th annual All Pontiac Show on Aug. 18.

The community is invited to participate in the Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Sept. 15 at Stone Gables Estate. The family-friendly event will also feature children’s activities and games, competitions for adults, giveaways, food, and prizes.

Church of the Brethren (COB), serves as the regional organizer for Manheim. To meet those needs, volunteers of all ages from the following Manheim-area churches joined forces: Trinity Evangelical Congregational (EC) Church, East Fairview COB, Erb Mennonite Church, Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC), Salem United Methodist Church, White Oak COB, Jerusalem Church, Newport Church, LCBC Manheim, Erisman Mennonite, and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. Loren Gochnauer of Trinity EC Church explained that the volunteers work as teams to complete tasks and also take time to talk to and pray with the recipients. Recipients and volunteers are mutually blessed by the symbiotic nature of The Manheim Project. Twentyeight people from Trinity participated this year, contributing more than 200 hours of time to help others with tasks at their homes. Some folks schedule time off work in advance while others squeeze the projects into their week in addition to working regular hours at their jobs. “Our youngest volunteer was 10 years old, and folks in their 70s (also helped),” noted Gochnauer. Manheim-area churches or individuals who would like to participate next summer may email themanheimproject @gmail.com or search for “The Manheim Project” on Facebook. To learn more about Love INC, readers may call 717-735-7540 or visit https://loveinclancaster.org.

Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program),” said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth,” Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through midAugust. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program,” she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live

independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up” job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang,” said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and glutenfree treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby.” “That was a very successful day,” said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building),” Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect,” Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office

work or cleaning, we can help,” she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of (participants’) days.” Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables),” said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in special-needs classes and camps since she was 8,” said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us.” Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. Individuals with questions may email reeniepanzini@aol.com.

Walk Of Love from pg 1 international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly will run the 5K race pulling a cart with her trainer on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,” O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s event. That amount would enable Brittany’s Hope to provide adoption grants for seven children with special needs or help with the construction of a much-needed living residence for up to 28 orphaned children with disabilities in a rural and remote area of northern Vietnam. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills. The Walk of Love, a fun-filled, familyfriendly event, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and feature a 5K, a fun walk, games and activities for children, competitions for adults, giveaways, and food. Free face painting, miniature golf, miniature fishing, and pony rides will be among the festivities for children. Folks may also visit the animals that live on the property at the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo. To register for the Walk of Love, interested individuals may visit www.walkoflove.org and enter the discount code “MERCH15” for 15 percent off the registration rate. All registrants will receive a sT-shirt and goodie bag. Participants who opt to raise additional funds by setting up a page through https://walkoflove2018.cause

Dolly, a miniature pony that resides in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, is currently working with international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan to train for the Walk of Love on Sept. 15. The 14th annual cross-country 5K and fun walk will benefit Brittany’s Hope. vox.com/ will have the chance the win special prizes. Folks who are unable to attend but would still like to contribute financially may do so at the aforementioned website. On the day of the event, registration and games will open at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Runners will follow a new route through Stone Gables Estate, with the start and finish lines located beside the recently relocated and restored Star Barn and its outbuildings. The 5K will be chip-timed, and participants will cover ground on rolling wooded trails, bridges, and historic railroad tracks. The fun walk - a short, noncompetitive loop through the woods and manicured grounds of Stone Gables Estate - will begin at 10:10 a.m. A post-race lunch and brief awards ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Giveaway winners will also be announced at that time. Awards will be given to the top three overall 5K finishers and to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each age group. The single top overall runner will receive a cash prize. guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back, marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1670 Nissley Road, Landisville. Registration will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. A registration fee will be charged for exhibited vehicles, with a discount for those entered by Saturday, Aug. 11. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. All Pontiac vehicles, not just GTOs, are welcome at the show. Every entry will be photographed, and registrants will receive framed copies. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. “Each year our awards are changed out to keep things fresh, Schreck noted. The show will again be accompanied by a model car contest for children and adults. Show registrants may enter the model car contest at no cost, but other competitors may enter for a donation. Model cars will be limited to plastic assembly; diecast models will not be permitted. Families are welcome to attend the show. Children and women will be especially invited to cast votes for their favorite entries. A disc jockey will broadcast music from the 1960s through the early 1970s, with some older music thrown in for good measure. A caterer will sell breakfast and lunch foods, as well as ice cream, french fries, and beverages. In the event of rain, the show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the same time and location. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania. The SVGTO collects donations yearly and presents them at Christmastime, when the club cooks one of two meals that it annually prepares for families staying at the home in Hershey. The SVGTO was named the 2013 GTOAA Chapter of the Year and is one of the most active of the 38 chapters in the national organization. It has 90 members in states along the East Coast, ranging as far south as Florida. “We’re more regional than just the Susquehanna Valley region, Schreck commented. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12. The choirs practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. Singers rehearse Tuesday evenings in late August through early May. Prospective singers should schedule a 15-minute audition time slot with director Sarah Wingard at 540-383-9986 or carolandconcerchoir@lancaster mennonite.org. MCCL is also accepting registrations for two nonauditioned programs that develop vocal skills: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through second grade and Choristers for grades two through eight. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from September through November and again in February through April. To register, readers may contact Audrey Livengood at 717-455-7025 or

mccl@lancastermennonite.org. The choirs are led by Wingard and artistic director Rosemary Blessing. Blessing holds degrees in piano performance and business administration from Eastern Mennonite University and has pursued graduate study in choral music. She maintains a private piano studio and teaches piano at Franklin & Marshall College. She is an active pianist in the Lancaster area and serves as rehearsal accompanist for the Lancaster Symphony Chorus. Wingard earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College with a concentration in voice and extensive study in piano. Growing up in Virginia, Wingard gained early musical experience singing with the nationally acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir. She teaches elementary music at the Kraybill and Locust Grove campuses of Lancaster Mennonite School. Wingard has also sung and regularly soloed with the Susquehanna Chorale. MCCL, a program of Lancaster Mennonite School, is open to the community. For more information, readers may visit www.mennonitechildrenschoir.org.

The Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) announced that income guidelines for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program changed on July 1. WIC is a federally funded program for pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, and infants and children under the age of 5. Eligibility is based on Pennsylvania residency, income and nutritional risk. The new 2018 income guidelines for eligibility start with an annual gross income of $22,459 for a household of one; $30,451 for two; $38,443 for three; $46,435 for four; $54,427 for five; and $62,419 for six. Unborn children are counted when the woman is pregnant. For each additional household member, $7,992 is added. WIC does not require proof of citizenship. WIC families receive nutrition counseling from a nutritionist, breastfeeding support, referrals, and food vouchers redeemable at participating grocery stores for a variety of foods, including milk, eggs, cereal, infant cereal and formula, bread, tofu, jarred baby foods, canned foods, and produce. For more information about WIC, readers may call CAP at 717-509-3686 or 800-WICWINS or visit www.pawic.com. Pennsylvania WIC is funded by the USDA. More details about CAP are available at www.caplanc.org.
