Creek Stomp Will Offer Hands-On Fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Prepare to get your feet wet - literally - when Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance hosts a creek stomp on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The event will be held at the covered bridge in Memorial Park, Manheim, near the Farm Show complex off East Adele Avenue. It will begin at 6 p.m. “Watershed specialists from the Lancaster County Conservation District will be leading participants into the Chiques Creek to
look for and collect macroinvertebrates,” explained Steve Gergely, president of Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, adding that participants will then gather at the pavilion to discuss what’s been collected. “The specialists help to identify the species and discuss what those species mean in terms of relative stream health. For example, some species indicate good water quality, while others are only found in areas of degraded water quality.” See Creek Stomp pg 2
The Kids Cookie Break Fest will feature lots of family fun.
Bring The Family To The Kids Cookie Break Fest or a day of fun family entertainment, head to the Kids Cookie Break Fest. The event will be held at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Aug. 27. Two sessions will be held; each will feature the same lineup. Sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets are free and will be available for the fest starting on Monday, Aug. 15, by calling 717-459-3701 or visiting www.the junctioncenterproductions.com. “We’re celebrating our 10th year of the Kids Cookie Break Fest,” said Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, which is presenting the event. “We’ll have lots of entertainment on two outdoor stages.” The lineup will feature performances by Slugs & Bugs, Phredd, First Capital

Also represented will be Spooky Nook Gymnastics, Snapology and The Balunguy. Interactive vendor tents will also be set up at the festival. “Businesses, schools or other organizations will have tables with something fun to do while they
present information about who they are and what they have to offer,” Gagne stated. “Our vendors tend to get very creative with the games and prizes they give away.” People who come to the Kids Cookie Break Fest are invited to bring items to benefit Align Life Ministries, Gagne said. “We’re asking for donations of diapers in size 4, 5 or 6; Pull-Ups; baby wipes; or $10 baby-themed gift cards to Walmart,” she explained. Although the festival is free to attend, ticket holders will have the option to reserve a Chick-fil-A meal for a fee at the time of ordering tickets, and a variety of food trucks will be on-site selling food for purchase. “People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunches as well if they’d like to,” Gagne said. She noted that the Kids Cookie Break Fest is a way for WJTL to promote its mission and connect
During the month of July, volunteers completed service projects for homeowners in need throughout Manheim. The efforts were all part of the Compassion Project, a program of Love INC of Lancaster County, an organization with a mission to mobilize local churches to take action in the community. “A lot of churches want to serve their community, but they aren’t sure where to start,” explained Katie Leaman, communications and donor development director for

The Schaefferstown branch will be located at 2483 Stiegel Pike in the shopping complex shared with Dutch-Way Farm Market and Good’s Store. An anticipated opening is planned for November. Love INC has been organizing the Compassion Project for more than 10 years, and the program has grown every year, Leaman said. “We help people yearround, but we do a one-time push in the summer,” she said. “It’s like a mission trip for church members, but it’s done locally.” Within the seven school districts, 32 churches participated in Compassion Project activities this summer, with 250 volunteers in total. “Anyone from any church can participate,” Leaman stated. “We currently have 23 different denominations that partner with us. We will work with and serve anybody.” She emphasized that although the Compassion Project occurs in July, Love INC works throughout the year to help people in need. “We are also open and looking for volunteers through- Volunteers fixed a porch on a Manheim home through the out the year,” Leaman said. Love INC of Lancaster County. “We help them serve in a way that truly meets the needs of their community.” Throughout July, volunteers from Manheim churches completed a wide range of projects, Leaman said. “They’ve done yard work, helping people who can’t keep up with mulching or weeding. They’ve done outdoor repair work on homes, replacing decking or installing ramps to make homes more accessible to people,” she stated. She noted that Love INC tries to match church volunteers with the specific needs of clients who contact the organization for help. “Depending on the skills of the church group, they might do electrical work or plumbing work,” she said. “The church groups tell us how many volunteers they have and what sorts of work they’re able to do, and we connect them with homeowners based on geographical location and the skills of the volunteers.” Leaman remarked that Love INC receives positive feedback every year from clients about the work volunteers have done. “Generally, we’re serving lower-income people, including elderly people who want to stay in their homes but need some help with upkeep,” she said. “We have also noticed an increase in single moms who need help.” The Compassion Project is held in seven school dis-

After 10 seasons of coaching Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Heart and Sole programs with Lancaster-Lebanon GOTR, Gayle Boltz, winner of the 2022 Shining Light Award, knows exactly what is most rewarding about volunteering, but she cannot talk about it without becoming emotional. “It’s when you see the girls just come to life (as a team),” explained Boltz, who said the transformation usually happens midseason after the girls complete their first practice 5K. “That’s what I call the magic … when they feel that strength within them.” Boltz began coaching at Annville Elementary School in the spring of 2017. She was soon working to start a team at Lebanon Catholic - a kindergarten through 12thgrade private school that she had attended. Her success inspired her to start a Heart
and Sole program at Lebanon Catholic for middleschoolers in the spring of 2018. When a team could not be raised, Boltz coached at Lebanon Middle School, where she connected with Laurie Funk, now a board member with GOTR Lancaster and Lebanon. In the fall of 2018, Boltz returned to GOTR at Lebanon Catholic, where she continued to coach until the spring of 2019, when she decided to transport girls who were interested in taking part in Heart and Sole to the Lebanon YMCA. “That’s when Laurie and I realized the power of connecting girls from different schools,” said Boltz. In the spring of 2020, a community team was born. Then, the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Coaches reached out with activity packages to girls who had signed up from all over Lebanon County. Boltz noted that the YMCA has supported the program, but a lack of
coaches has caused the GOTR program to struggle recently. Boltz was nominated by fellow coaches who mentioned her positive attitude and vision as well as her ability to connect with each girl and celebrate her individual achievements. When 2021 Shining Light winner Cara Scudner announced Boltz as the award winner at the May 25 banquet, she said, “(Boltz’s) infectious enthusiasm, strength, and leadership skills brought girls from different schools together into one team with a strong bond.” Each Shining Light Award winner receives a bracelet and $500 to donate. Boltz chose to give to the Tour de Lebanon Valley bike ride, which raises funds for the Community Health Council of Lebanon County; the Lebanon Valley Conservancy; the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coali-
tion; the Lebanon Valley Mountain Bike Team, which is an interscholastic cycling team for young students; and the Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, which provides bikes for children in Lebanon. The GOTR fall season will be held from Monday, Sept. 12, through Monday, Nov. 21, with the GOTR 5K presented by OAL scheduled to be held at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 19. The 5K, which is open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. GOTR is especially in need of volunteer coaches to help make the season possible for girls at each participating school. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit w w w. g o t r l a n c a s t e r . o r g . Those who have questions about volunteering may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

Behavioral Health Grants Announced The
The Touchstone Foundation has awarded its Children’s Behavioral Health Grants. This year, the Touchstone Foundation awarded $55,000 to five local organizations to increase accessibility and equity to youth mental wellness resources in Lancaster County. The recipients are Bench Mark Program, Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School, YWCA Lancaster, Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, and Samaritan Counseling Center. training services to youths identified as at-risk by local high schools and community organizations. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School provides counseling services for its students and strives to create a learning environment that develops students’ emotional intelligence in tandem with cognitive intelligence. With the grant, the school will be able to hire a temporary fulltime school counselor during the summer months. The YWCA Lancaster is increasing prevention education in its Sexual Assault Prevention and Counseling Center. As the rape crisis center for the county, the center provides primary prevention education programs to the community. The Healthy Relationship Project (HRP) is a researchedbased, trauma-informed, and age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention curriculum created by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont. The YWCA delivers the programs directly in schools to lower access barriers for children and families. CAP of Lancaster County hosts Play and Learn programs to serve families with
children birth to age 5 in communities in Lancaster County that have limited availability of high-quality early learning opportunities. Each session consists of child-directed play, caregiver learning, a coordinated group activity, and intentional space for caregivers to build social capital, as well as time for caregivers to explore resources with a focus on family well-being. Samaritan Counseling Center is expanding its Teen Hope program. Teen Hope is a mental health awareness program screening students for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. The funding from the Touchstone Foundation will help Teen Hope address the needs of the community by updating its video for parent and student education so that internal training modules will have clear, concise, and consistent expectations and protocols for staff, interns, and volunteers in the schools. Touchstone Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on elevating the mental well-being of youths and children in Lancaster County. To learn more, visit www.touchstonefound.org.

4-H Posts Opportunity To Try Program For Free Penn State Extension invites youths ages 5 to 18 to participate in 4-H at no cost from August through September. During the trial period, youths can experience a sampling of 4-H projects through a series of online activities designed to be fun and interactive. The sessions will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Sept. 19, with no session on Labor Day, Sept. 5. The session on Aug. 15 will focus on arts and crafts, and youths will make mosaics. On Aug. 22, students will focus on environmental science and learn to make a healthy snack of “dirt with worms.” In the Aug. 29 session, youths will learn about animal science and caring for pets through an activity focused on small companion animals. Youths will take part in a science activity on Sept. 12. The final session, on Sept. 19, is called “Moving 4-Ward,” and youths will learn how to participate in 4-H in the future and meet their county or area 4-H educators in person. Youths may join the trial period at any point. Registration is available at https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h/trial. Upon registration, participants will receive email instructions about how to prepare for and join the online activities. They will participate in the sessions alongside other new 4-H members from around the state. Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a nonformal educational youth development program of the United States Department of Agriculture that seeks to help young people develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring and contributing citizens. For more information, visit https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h.

“Clean water is a community issue,” said Allyson Gibson, director of strategic partnerships and programs for Lancaster Clean Water Partners. “It affects public health with drinking water. It can affect real estate values, and it plays a big part in our entire quality of life.” Gibson’s efforts to provide clean water just got a big boost. The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners presented a check for $3.4 million to the Lancaster County Conservation District and Lancaster Clean Water Partners to fund 11 clean water projects throughout the county. The funding represents the largest single investment in clean water in Lancaster County government history. The check was presented at the Conewago Recreation Trail in Elizabethtown. The site was specifically chosen, Gibson said, to highlight the three-phase, multi-municipal

In addition to the Conewago Creek project, other projects that will be funded by the investment include waste minimization upgrades to several farms located near streams, several stream improvement projects, urban tree planting and the installation of eight continuous monitor units on streams around the county. Gibson noted that the restoration project at the Conewago Creek runs parallel to the Conewago Recreation Trail, a popular spot for walking, running, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. As the project progresses, people will be able to see firsthand the importance of clean water efforts, she noted. “Clean water access affects how people enjoy

recreation,” Gibson stated. “People want to feel safe when they go outside and when they enjoy parks and other recreation areas.” She noted that clean water also has an economic impact on everyone. “If the water in our creeks and streams is really dirty, it’s going to cost us more to treat it so we can drink it, swim in it or enjoy it,” she said. As the clean water projects get underway in the county, Gibson encourages everyone to do his or her part to promote the initiative. “Find out what watershed you live in, and learn what you can do to help,” she stated, adding that a good place to start is www.lancasterwatersheds.org. “Plant a tree. Go explore a Lancaster Conservancy preserve. Learn how to work with your neighbors to make clean water accessible to everyone.”
