Magic is happening in Carmen Sanchez Bezzard’s backyard, and the Manheim woman invites you to experience it, too. Bezzard gives tours of Dragon Hill Gardens, the name she’s given her backyard haven, and she recently released the children’s book “Momma’s Magical Gardens.” “I love gardening,” Carmen said. “For me, nature is my sanctuary.” When Carmen and her husband, Dale, moved to their property in 2003, the yard was a blank slate. “There was hardly anything here,” she recalled. Over time, the pair has added a wide variety of flowers and plants, as well as a small stream and waterfall and lots of whimsical statues. “My husband loves dragons,” Carmen noted, adding that the garden

Rite Aid To Help Children’s Hospitals Rite Aid’s annual in-store customer fundraising campaign benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals will run through Saturday Aug. 28. All funds donated by customers will benefit 53 children’s hospitals providing lifesaving care and services for children in Rite Aid communities. This marks the 27th year for Rite Aid’s annual campaign, with customer support helping the company and its public charity, The Rite Aid Foundation, to raise and donate more than $100 million overall to CMN Hospitals.
During this year’s campaign, customers can donate during every in-store transaction at Rite Aid. In addition to patient services, charitable care and equipment, donations help pioneer research that transforms how hospitals care for children not just in their youth, but throughout their lives. All donations made during Rite Aid’s campaign will stay local, supporting the children’s hospitals in customers’ communities. To learn more about CMN Hospitals, visit www.cmn hospitals.org.

Aiming High And Shooting For The Stars BY COURTNEY MENGEL
After finding out that Creation Festival was canceled for the second year in a row, Josh Fulmer, youth minister at Hempfield Church of the Brethren, 1186 Stevens St., Manheim, was disappointed. The youth group members had also been looking forward to attending the music festival, so Fulmer discussed ideas with the church secretary, who suggested hosting a music event at the church. Fulmer noted that he did not want to plan something small with only a few bands. Instead, he wanted to aim high and shoot for the stars. Hempfield Church of the Brethren will host its first Hempfield Community Out-
door Bash event from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The event is free to the public and will take place on the church grounds. The purpose of the event is to provide a fun and entertaining environment for the community to interact with the church, enjoy food and fellowship, and be introduced to the Gospel through music, messages, and personal connections. Speakers, singers, and bands are scheduled to take the stage. Among them will be The New Haven, Ryan Mayersky, and Matt Wheeler. There will also be food for purchase. “I want to make sure our community is OK and make sure they know that we care about them,” said Fulmer. “What better way to do that
than to give them something made specifically for them?” On Friday, Sept. 24, Hempfield Church of the Brethren’s youth group will spend the evening listening to live music, eating food, and playing games. Teens will also camp overnight in tents at the church. “We want to remind the teens that you don’t have to go far away to have these kinds of experiences,” explained Fulmer. “You can be in those awesome moments anywhere.” The full schedule will be posted online once finalized. For more information, search for “Hempfield Community Outdoor Bash” on Facebook, call 717-898-0181, or email josh@hempfieldcob.org. To learn more about Hempfield

really for the child in all of us. “This book is for anyone who loves the idea of spending time in the garden or who appreciates the magic of a garden,” she noted. “It’s about working with your hands and seeing how dirt can be something magical. Nature is in everything around us, and nature is in you. You have a special power within you, and it’s the power to grow beautiful things.” Carmen is in the process of donating copies of her book to local libraries and is currently working on two or three more books. In the meantime, she’s happy to give tours of her garden by appointment to anyone who’s interested. “I’ll take people on a walking tour of the garden, and I let children name the different characters throughout the gardens,” she said. “They all already have names, but they can have more than one. It’s about having fun and finding the magic in the garden.” “Momma’s Magical Gardens” is available for purchase on Amazon. Make-A-Wish Announces Fundraising Total The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driv-
er will be invited to throw out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers. In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale of a replica 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe built inhouse, as well as the tools used to build the car. Carmen released “Momma’s Magical Gardens” in June, although she started writing it more than a decade ago. In the time between, she operated a mystical gift shop in Smoketown and cared for her ill father before his death in 2008. That experience prompted her first book, “Can You See Me, Pappy? It’s Analise!” The book was written about the special connection between her father and her great-niece. “Caring for my dad was a bittersweet time, but Ana brought more sweet to the bitter,” Carmen said. For “Momma’s Magical Gardens,” she turned to her yard for inspiration. “It’s about a child working in the garden with his mother, and the child learns about the magic of gardening,” she noted, adding that her daughter, Jessica, designed the book’s cover art. “Mother Nature is magical. You can take a tiny seed, plant it in the dirt and something beautiful comes from it. That’s magic.” The book is geared toward children, but Carmen said it’s

Legion Plans Patriots Ride/Day The Ephrata American Legion Post 429, located on Cocalico Street, will hold its second annual Patriots Ride/Day to benefit several charitable organizations on Saturday, Aug. 21. The recipients of the proceeds will be IM ABLE, Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors and the Cloister Ephrata American Legion Post 429. The event will begin with a motorcycle ride organized by the Ephrata American Legion Riders. Registration will start at 11 a.m., with kickstands up at noon. There will be a per-person charge for the event, which includes a scenic ride through the countryside, a stop at Blue Mountain Lakes, a food buffet at 4 p.m. at the Ephrata American Legion and live music by Off Our Rockers Band from 6 to 10 p.m. All motorcyclists are welcome. For more details, call Legion Riders president Scott Williams at 717-572-5979. While the motorcycle ride is taking place, a family fun day will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Legion. It will be hosted by the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and Auxiliary. The event will include a food truck and an ice cream truck on-site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a dunk tank featuring special guests, a bounce castle, barrel train rides and carnival-type games. Members of the Liberty War Bird Association and the Red Horse Unit from Fort Indiantown Gap will be present, along with local first responders. There is no admission fee, but some games and food may have nominal fees. At 4 p.m. in the ballroom, the food buffet will become available, both to those who took part in the motorcycle ride and those who did not. All attendees may stay for the live music. There is a fee for those who did not go on the motorcycle ride, and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the American Legion at 717-733-2576, or they may be purchased at the door. Sponsorships are available.
