For the Manheim Central High School (MCHS) marching band, excitement for the impending school year’s show starts way before band camp rolls around toward summer’s end. “We have a Reveal Night in April for all of the students who are interested in joining (marching band) or planning on coming back,” explained MCHS senior Paige Weaver, who is serving as a drum major this year along with fellow seniors Brooke Barnes and Brianna Sauder. Reveal Night is a time for students and parents to get the rundown on the coming season, ask questions, and view a video of the new show for the following school year. John Brackbill, now in his 11th year as MCHS marching band director, said that a staff meeting takes place in January to generate ideas for the show before pitching something to the design team. The Susquehanna Chorale will perform “Music for a Summer’s Evening” at the Mount Gretna Tabernacle on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. The Tabernacle is located at Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue in the Campmeeting area. The chorale’s artistic director, Linda L. Tedford, will conduct the chorale in its appearance as part of Mount Gretna’s Summer at the Tabernacle concert series. The chorale, founded in 1981 by Tedford, is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 36 auditioned singers. From Gregorian chants to the rhythms of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, from the music of current composers to classics from the Great American Songbook, the concert will explore a variety of repertoire. Guest artist Dr. Todd Goranson will be featured on saxophone for select pieces. In addition, Goranson will perform a pre-concert recital 15 minutes before the performance. The chorale’s concert will include Byron J. Smith’s “Worthy to Be Praised,” which expresses praise to God and which will contrast with the peaceful reflections of evening in “Abendlied” by Josef Rheinberger. Other selections will include Ola Gjeilo’s “Evening Prayer” and Howard Helvey’s arrangement of “Steal Away,” both accompanied by saxophone, as well as “Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre, “No Mirrors in My Nana’s House,” and “Let the Life I’ve Lived Speak for Me.” The concert will conclude with standards from the Great American Songbook, including “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” Admission is free, though a freewill offering will be accepted to support the Tabernacle’s summer series. For more information, readers may call 717-533-7859 or visit www.susquehanna chorale.org. Parking information is available by visiting www.mtgretnatabernacle.org and selecting Directions.

Organizer Kris Gray noted that the clothing is organized by size and displayed on racks and tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, with plenty of parking available. A limited number of shopping bags will be available, so shoppers may want to bring their own. According to Gray, 568 people attended the 2018 God’s Clothing Closet event, making it the highest attendance on record. Before the doors opened, the waiting line extended past the Prayer Garden located beside the church parking lot. More than 500 hours of volunteer time at the church went into the event, Gray said, plus countless hours spent gathering, laundering, and mending clothing and preparing food for the day. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Current needs at the food pantry include canned vegetables, jelly, saltines and other crackers, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, and Spam. Last year, five boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. The God’s Clothing Closet event will also have free Bibles and devotional materials available for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers, and free on-site child care will be provided. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Donations of children’s clothing only will be accepted at the church from Monday, Aug. 19, to Friday, Aug. 23. Leftover items will be donated to various local ministries. Readers with questions about the event may call the Ruhl’s UMC office at 717-665-3400.

made together during the week. “They’re kind of just short YouTube videos that are meant to be funny,” Brooke explained. MCHS band camp finished strong with a potluck dinner at the high school and a preview show for community members in the stadium. In addition to presenting audiences with “The Sunken Cathedral” at MCHS football games, the students will take part in five competitions. Last year, the MCHS marching band earned second place in the Patriot A division at the 59th annual Cavalcade of Bands Marching Band Championship on Nov. 10 at Hersheypark. The MCHS marching band and Manheim Central Band Boosters will also host the Baron Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 26, with 20 high school bands competing in a display of marching and music. The public is invited to attend. For more details on the MCHS marching band and upcoming events, readers may visit www.mcmarchingbarons.org.

This year, the 117 members of the MCHS marching band will be performing a show titled “The Sunken Cathedral,” which they learned and rehearsed during morning and evening sessions of band camp held at the school from July 29 to Aug. 9. The show’s three movements are based on the following pieces: “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner, “Undertow” by John Mackey, and Symphony No. 4 by David Maslanka. Brianna explained that the show is loosely based on a myth about a cathedral located in a small town off the coast of France; when the tide comes in, it floods the city, and the cathedral is submerged. “None of us had heard of (‘The Sunken Cathedral’) before, but it’s a really cool show and the music is paired really well with it,” commented Paige. “It’s pretty powerful,” agreed Brianna. Brooke noted learning a new marching style was one of the challenges of training for “The Sunken Cathedral,” along with the show having a lot of key and tempo changes. Aside from the music, the cathedral aspect of the show will also be represented in the color guard uniforms, which Paige said have been designed to look like stained glass windows. The color guard will switch out flags that resemble stained glass and water. During camp, Brackbill applauded this year’s group for establishing a solid group culture and being laser-focused. “They have a desire to be better not just for themselves but for the whole group,” Brackbill stated. Once again, Brackbill allowed students to throw water balloons at him on the first Thursday of band camp. Each student was able to throw two water balloons at him if they wanted to, as part of a tradition that began in Brackbill’s first year directing marching band. He came up with the idea as a way to relieve some of the tension he felt from band members as they put in long hours in the intense heat. Other fun included dressing up for spirit days with themes of Memes, Disney, Dress Like a Staff Member, Decades, and Section Day. Aside from dressing alike for Section Day, each band section revealed a short video to the whole group that they had

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb To Remember NYC Firefighters By Dayna M. Reidenouer
After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancaster-area firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real - you’re doing what they were doing: climbing steps.” Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be
held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it was all in a day’s work for first responders. “They fight fires rain or shine,” Mokros remarked.

Giant Pilots Enhanced Food Bank Rewards Program Receives Grant Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program. An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app. By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will roll out by the end of the year. Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn points through
targeted “bonus earn” offers. When it comes time to redeem points, customers can either redeem their points for discounts on gas with 100 points equaling a $0.10 discount per gallon up to 25 gallons - or choose among new offers such as converting points to dollars to save directly on groceries. In addition to viewing their personalized offers and rewards earnings on the app, customers can load digital coupons, activate Deli Order Ahead, or place a grocery order with Giant Direct. In the app, customers can track their earning progress while managing their points and rewards. Points earned expire on the last day of the month following the month in which they were earned. For more information about Giant or Martin’s, readers may visit the https://giantfoodstores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.

Moms in Prayer International will soon kick off another season of praying for children and schools. In Lancaster County, many groups will meet weekly. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide group of praying mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other women. In addition to a traditional/oneschool Moms in Prayer group, there are also church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, prodigal, military, college, career, language-based, grandmothers’ and working mothers’ groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer International has one goal: to impact children and schools for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Mothers in more than 140 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour praying through the four steps of prayer: praising God for who He is, silently confessing any sins, thanking God for what He has done, and interceding on behalf of children, teachers, and school staff members. Additionally, Moms in Prayer will hold Bless Our School Sunday on Sept. 15. On this date, churches around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in their congregations. For more information about Moms in Prayer International, to find a group, or more information about Bless Our Schools Sunday, readers may visit www.momsin prayer.org. Individuals can locate a group through the Moms in Prayer website by selecting Get Involved, or they may contact Sue Forry at 4stepsofprayer@gmail.com.

24 MONTHS
Friendship Community and the Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio will hold an open house on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at its Lititz Gallery, located in the Shoppes at Bloomfield Village, 235 Bloomfield Drive, Lititz. The public is invited. The event will highlight the current exhibit of artwork, and light refreshments will be provided. The Lititz Gallery is the second location for Friendship Community to display pieces created by various Heart Artists. The Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a place for artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities to celebrate their personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration. More than 70 unique artists work with local professionals and volunteers to create and sell artistic masterpieces while developing a sense of purpose, value and joy. Artists attend day and evening classes in the downtown Lancaster studio and receive instructions in a variety of techniques and media platforms. The pieces of artwork are selected through a juried process before being matted, framed and hung on the gallery walls. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization that aims to cultivate capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. It offers three day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 26 residential homes serving more than 200 individuals in the two counties. For more details about the open house, readers may contact Becky Link at 717-656-2466 or blink@friendshipcommunity.net.

Where & When Pennsylvania’s Summer Bucket List Challenge is winding down at the end of August, but there is still time to win an awesome Gettysburg getaway. With the help of its social media followers, Where & When Pennsylvania came up with a bucket list of summer “must-do’s” in Pennsylvania. If you have been, seen, or done any of the 10 things on the list, share a photo of your visit on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #whereandwhenbucketlist. Participants are not required to experience all the suggestions on the list, but the more you do, the more chances you have to win. Hurry; the deadline for entry is Sunday, Sept. 1. More information on the Summer Bucket List Challenge and prize details can be found at https://whereandwhen.com/articles/ Summer-Bucket-List-Challenge.
