“We went from flash flood warnings to heat advisories,” said student Sami Maddox, looking back on the two weeks of band camp completed by members of the Manheim Central High School (MCHS) marching band. On weekdays from July 30 to Aug. 10, the students persevered through daily sessions from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Even losing some practice time to the rain did not stop the students from
mastering this fall’s show, “Eclipse.” Sami and fellow seniors Laura Forwood and Noah Urban, who are this season’s drum majors, said that the show features a bold and triumphant opening followed by a darker and funkier second movement with complex rhythms. “We’re telling the story of what goes on in space,” explained See Band Camp pg 8
Members of the Manheim Central High School marching band endured rain and heat during band camp, held at the school from July 30 to Aug. 10, as they learned the drill and music for “Eclipse.”
Drum majors (from left) Sami Maddox, Noah Urban, and Laura Forwood are excited to unveil “Eclipse,” the new show for the Manheim Central High School marching band’s 2018 season, to the public this fall at football games and several band competitions.

Volunteers from Ruhl’s United Methodist Church in Manheim invite the community to God’s Clothing Closet, an annual event offering free quality used clothing, on Aug. 25. By Chelsea Peifer

Up to
Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held just in time for the dawning of a new school year. “We have people who come because they want something new and some people who are in desperate need of something,” shared Gray. See Clothing Giveaway pg 9

On Friday, Aug. 24, Ephrata National Bank (ENB) will celebrate its 10th year as a part of the Manheim community. ENB expanded its branch network in the fall of 2008 by opening the Manheim office, located at the intersection of Doe Run and Penryn roads. The opening was a part of the bank’s growth strategy to expand into new communities. Leading the office is Craig Dietrich, a Manheim resident with strong ties to the community. Passionate about the community in which he works and resides, Dietrich has been involved in several Manheim community-based organizations, including the Manheim Rotary Club, for which he has served on the board and audit committee, and the Manheim Touchdown Club. Brooke Magni, Lititz recROC director and instructor for the Lititz recCenter First Steps to 5K (FS25K) class, is a Lititz native, an experienced runner, and a Boston Marathon qualifier, making her more than qualified to teach an eight-week training program to help runners and would-be runners prepare for the upcoming Pretzel Twist, a 5K run and walk that has long been a Lititz tradition. This year’s Pretzel Twist will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, beginning at 9 a.m. Check-in will open at 7 a.m. The race will start at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners. Other prizes will be awarded to the top three runners in several age categories. Refreshments will be served following the run/walk. Area runners are encouraged to gather co-workers, friends, family, and other groups to form teams to participate for the best group time. This year’s race will have a new course. Magni said that although the training program has already begun, area residents who wish to take the class and complete the Pretzel Twist may still register. “(The class) is for anybody, said Magni, who noted that those who have never run before as well as former intermediate runners who are returning to running are welcome. The class, which meets in the lobby of the rec center each Saturday at 9 a.m. through Sept. 15, begins with a short presentation by Magni on a relevant topic. “We have talked about how to buy
People taking part in a training program to prepare to run the 41st annual Pretzel Twist 5K meet Saturday mornings at the Lititz recCenter. The class is open to beginner and intermediate runners who would like help and instruction in training for the event, which will take place on Sept. 22 in Lititz. running shoes or what to eat before a race,â€? explained Magni, who said she will focus on subjects related to running that are not specifically about training. Following the presentation, the group does some warm-up exercises with an emphasis on stretching, followed by running. “Each week we add a little (distance) to the running (segment),â€? said Magni, who relayed that on the second week, the group walked and ran about 1.5 miles. “Some walk, (and) some do a (combination) walk, run, and jog,â€? she explained. “(When we work) together as a group ‌ it’s nice to see other people out there and to have someone on your level to run with.â€? Magni has also given class members homework assignments to help them prepare. She said that the running program homework varies. “There are programs for people just coming off the couch and
programs for beginner-intermediate and also an intermediate program, she explained. According to Magni, the 5K distance of 3.1 miles is one that most runners can prepare to run/walk in eight weeks. “It’s giving them an end goal, she said. The Kids Mile Marathon, which is open to children ages 3 to 12, will also be completed at the event. “Over the course of the summer, (participating children) track 25 miles, and on the last day, they run 1.2 miles, explained Magni. The Kids Mile Marathon will take place at the Lititz recCenter on Sept. 22 at 8:30 a.m. There is a fee to take part in the class. The fee includes Pretzel Twist registration and a special post-race celebration for class members. Readers who wish to register for the class or to take part in the Pretzel Twist or the Kids Mile Marathon may do so at www.lititzrec.com/special -events/pretzel-twist.

Labor Day Auction from pg 1 Hospice & Community Care’s 34th annual Labor Day Auction will be held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 3, beginning each day at 7:30 a.m. with Amish-made food, specialty auctions, and packed schedules. The Labor Day Auction is free to attend, with proceeds from winning bids and food sales benefiting patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and bereavement support. The two-day event will feature new and used items up for bids, a furniture auction, an array of gift certificates and gift baskets, and five specialty auctions. The specialty auctions on Sept. 1 will feature plants, artwork, and days of care. Through the auction for days of care, folks will be able to contribute directly to patient care. On average, a day of hospice care for one patient costs $186. Auction bidders may “buy” one or more days of care. The art auction will offer original paintings from local artists as well as the debut of the 2018 Memorial Garden Ornament. Gardeners will love the plant auction, which will continue on Sept. 3 in order to accommodate the six truckloads of plants donated to the fundraiser. A high-end auction on Sept. 3 will focus on vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. Additional auctions that day will include sports items and quilts. The sports memorabilia auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and SportsTalk host Eric May. The specialty quilt auction will offer hand-quilted pieces from Amish crafters, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as gently used quilts in a wide range of sizes. There will also be opportunities to win a 2018 Ford Mustang Coupe and $2,000 or $1,000 Visa gift cards. Folks who are hungry during the Labor Day Auction are invited to join the Auction Club, which is designed for anyone who loves Amish-made food, enjoys

Laura. The third movement features “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden. “This is our first time taking on a pop song, so that’s been fun,” noted Sami. A recap of some of the music from the first movement closes out the show. MCHS marching band director John Brackbill said that the staff members get together after the season ends to pitch ideas for the following year’s show until they settle on something that is “just the right mix of concrete and esoteric.” Ian Flint, an old friend of Brackbill from his days performing music at a local amusement park, designs the drill formation for the MCHS marching band show as well as for numerous marching bands at the high school and collegiate levels around the country. “For band camp, the most important thing is just the students coming together, and second to that is learning the drill,” stated Brackbill. Staff members strive to make the marching band as inclusive as possible, and Brackbill said that several students participate in a fall sport in addition to playing in the band. This year’s 40 new marchers bring the MCHS marching band total to 110 instrumentalists and 18 color guard members. “We’re at our largest ever, so it’s good to

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer Nature Journaling: Seeing Nature on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 1:30 p.m. Attendees should meet at the Environmental Center. Participants will be able to relax as they take a closer look at nature’s wonders through sketching. No experience is required. There is a set fee per person. Preregistration is required by emailing governordick@hotmail.com or calling 717-9643808. Individuals should leave their name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
see the band growing,” said Sami, noting that the group is a good mix of upper and underclassmen. At band camp, students spent the morning sessions focusing on learning the drill while evenings were committed to the music. “I personally think our music is a higher level of difficulty than in previous years,” Laura stated. Sami agreed, adding, “It’s the hardest show we’ve done, musically.” Pelting Brackbill with hundreds of water balloons on the first Thursday of band camp is a tradition that helps to give the students a break. Brackbill, who is in
his 10th year of directing, came up with the idea as a way to let the students release some of the frustration that can accompany such a grueling two weeks. Spirit days during the second week of camp included crazy hats on Monday, sports jerseys on Tuesday, and Multiples Day on Wednesday with people in each section coordinating outfits. “The saxophone (players) were the 13 colonies because there are 13 of them,” Sami said. The three drum majors were decked out as rock, paper, and scissors. Character Day on Thursday was followed by the traditional section day on Friday, with each section donning matching shirts. “The purpose of section day is to have them
bond,” noted Laura. A parent preview show and potluck picnic on Friday evening capped off another successful year of band camp. In addition to wowing audiences with “Eclipse” during halftime at MCHS football games, the students will also take part in four or five competitions. The MCHS marching band and Manheim Central Band Boosters will also host the Baron Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 27, with 20 high school bands competing in a display of marching and music. The public is invited to attend. For more details on the MCHS marching band and upcoming events, readers may visit www.mcmarchingbarons.org.

11 a.m. Clothing is organized by size and displayed on clothing racks or tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, and it has plenty of parking. On-site child care
will be offered while parents shop. In addition to clothing, free Bibles and devotional materials will be on hand for adults and children. Gray noted that donations of nonperishable food or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry are encouraged but not required. Currently, items needed for the food pantry include canned fruit, canned meat and soups, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, cereal, and boxed potatoes. Last year, God’s Clothing Closet welcomed 465 shoppers - most of whom arrived in the first hour, Gray said. “The line of shoppers before we opened the
doors stretched to the Prayer Garden, and some of those shoppers arrived before 5:30 a.m., recounted Gray. “Several shoppers who attend every year took the time to stop and thank us for this needed ministry and how it personally blessed them. In addition to giving away clothing, approximately 220 Bibles and 37 handmade comforters were distributed to guests at the 2017 event. Five large boxes of nonperishable food donated by shoppers were given to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Any items left over at the event’s end will be donated to Community Aid. Collecting clothing, shoes, and accessories for the next God’s Clothing Closet is a yearlong process, and donations of quality used items are welcome at any time. The Lititz American Legion Riders from Post 56 will hold their 13th annual VA Hospice Ride on Sunday, Aug. 19. Registration will start at 10 a.m., and the ride will begin at noon. The scenic, guided ride will start at the Lititz American Legion on Broad Street; travel to New Holland American Legion, Morgantown American Legion, and Richland American Legion; and end back at Lititz American Legion, where refreshments will be available. Separate fees have been set for riders and for passengers. The ride will be held in memory of David Little, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and the service officer before he passed away earlier this year. Little was a chief warrant officer, retiring from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. A decorated veteran, he served two tours in Vietnam, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, and other honors. As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Little was shot down twice while spraying Agent Orange, intensifying his exposure to the chemical. Little
required 114 blood transfusions in one year. He was admitted to the hospice unit of the Lebanon VA Hospital in February 2018 and died on March 9. In addition to the Lititz American Legion, Little had also been a member of the Columbia American Legion, the Manheim VFW Post 5956, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 107. A
32nd-degree Mason, Little was a member of the Robert Burns Lodge 464 in Harrisburg; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg; and the Harrisburg Consistory. He held degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering, and he was an inventor, receiving patents for several of his inventions. For more information, readers may call

Dr. Jane Bluestein will visit The Janus School, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy, to present “My Brain Doesn’t Work Like That! on Tuesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The informative lecture will focus on working with students with learning disabilities. The program will explore a number of ways individuals learn. In addition to learning about practical strategies for accommodating a variety of learner preferences, participants will look at ways to teach children how to take responsibility for their own learning needs. Ideas for teachers and parents, especially those working with nontraditional learners, will be presented and discussed. Bluestein has worked with thousands of educators, counselors, health care professionals, parents, child care workers, and other community members worldwide. She has appeared internationally as a speaker and talkshow guest, and she is an award-winning author. Formerly a classroom teacher in innercity Pittsburgh, a crisis-intervention counselor, a teacher training program coordinator, and a volunteer with high-risk teenagers at a local day treatment program, Bluestein currently heads a consulting and resource firm in Albuquerque, N.M. The free lecture is open to the public. To register or for more information, readers may call 717-653-0025, email rpayne@thejanus school.org, or visit www.thejanusschool.org/ beta/speaker.
