BY CATHY MOLITORIS “We really have something for everyone,” said Kris Gray, chair of God’s Clothing Closet at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church. “We have clothing and shoes and purses and bags and accessories and books, housewares, linens, devotional material andThemore.”church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will hold its annual God’s Clothing Closet event in its gym on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25, 26 and 27. Thursday and Friday hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. by appointment only and will be limited to 50 shoppers per time slot. Saturday’s hours will be from 8 a.m. to noon, and no appointment is needed.Allitems are free, Gray noted. “We do this as a way to serve the community, with both their physical needs of clothing and their spiritual needs as well,” she said. “Anyone can come and get new-to-you clothing. We don’t ask you to show financial need. Just come and shop.” Along with clothing, housewares and devotional material, grab-and-go snacks will be available at the Dunmire, exit. who is the event cochair, emphasized the quality and variety of items in God’s Clothing Closet. “We have a lot of brandname stuff,” she stated. “Some things still have the tags on them.”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The church has been holding the event for 22 years, Gray said, noting that the project began as a way to serve local families. “We used to send clothing to (a mission) in Kentucky, and we had to pay to send the clothing down there,” she commented. “When we were giving away food boxes at Christmas, some of the families we were serving said they needed clothes for their kids. I thought, ‘Why are we sending clothes to Kentucky when there is a need right here in Manheim?’” Last year, the event served about 300 shoppers, Gray said, and more than 50 new Bibles as well as children’s Bible storybooks and devotional materials were given away. Shoppers also donated three boxes of food to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Donations of nonperishable food items will again be accepted this year, but are not required. “We would love to get back to serving over 600 people like we did in the past,” Gray stated. “It’s free and it’s open to anyone. We just want people to come and get what they need.” Donations of clothing and accessories will be accepted during the week of the event, beginning on Monday, Aug. 22. Donations may be dropped off by the front door of the church under the roof. Clean linens and towels will also be accepted, but no furniture will be accepted. Gray emphasized that there is a special need for baby, children’s and teen clothing as well as clothing in size 2X and larger in good condition.
As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries.Theshowcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.”
The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting

room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people love - art, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from Balance Dance. Lindsey encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-andcoming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager Joanie Kretzer. Lindsey’s goal is to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to everyone.”Formore information on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, missionspieces.Artistshncinspirationz@gmail.com.emailmayenteruptosixThedeadlineforsub-isSaturday,Oct.1.

BY ANN MEAD ASH Lititz recROC coordinator Corey Pickel described the upcoming Boulder Bash indoor climbing competition as a combination of problem solving and an athletic event. “We get more than 40 problems up there (on the climbing wall) for the event,” explained Pickel. A problem is the configuration that helps a climber move from the floor to the top of climbing wall using specific hand and foot holds.“So, for example, on the wall here there’s a green one with two pieces of tape that shows where your hand placement should be for the beginning of the problem,” pointed out Pickel, who noted that climbers will need to work with a specific color to reach the top. “Each problem has a point system attached, but competitors don’t know what that is,” Pickel explained, adding that the number of attempts to complete the problem is tracked and points are added up to determine the winners. Event head setter Doc Beverly works with a team to create fresh problems. The competition, which will be held at the recROC, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Suite 10, Lititz, on Saturday, Sept. 10, will feature advanced, intermediate, and beginner contests. Registration on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. Pickel said that the competition usually begins at 9:30 a.m. and that each competitive group takes about an hour to complete its climbs. About 75 competitors took part in the 2021 event. “We have had a great turnout the last few years,” said Pickel, who noted that some climbers travel a distance to take part but that many competitors are local. Male and female winners are named in each category. Prizes for winners have included tension boards climbers can use to train at home and crash pads for outdoor climbing. “People tend to appreciate (equipment) more, and (those prizes) entice some of the stronger climbers to come participate,” said Pickel. According to Pickel, spectators are welcome for a nominal fee, which includes free coffee, longjohns, and door prizes, which are often gift cards donated by local businesses.Pickel, who was tapped to run the recROC in 2019, pointed out that this is the sixth year for the Boulder Bash competition, which had originally been held each April. When COVID-19 restrictions delayed the 2020 event, the competition was moved to September. Pickel has been pleased with the growth of the competition and the overall use of the recROC center in recent years. “COVID was a major curveball, but with our committed members and staff we got through it,” he said. “I feel really blessed that we have been able to grow,” he said, noting the location generally has more than 100 visitors on a regular weekday. To prepare for the competition, teardown and cleaning of the wall and holds will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6. From that point, the wall will be shut down until the competition. Pickel explained that this is to make sure that all competitors have the same amount of time to work the problems.Readers who are interested in taking part in the Boulder Bash may visit 717-626-5096.recroc.com/eventshttp://www.lititzorcall at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19. Historic Rock Ford, consisting of the circa 1794 General Edward Hand Mansion and the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts, will host Mel Stewart Hankla of Carter County, Ky., on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. Hankla will present “The American Long Rifle: Backbone of Frontier Culture.”Hankla will showcase examples of early material culture, showing detailed images and sharing stories of early American frontiersmen. Hankla believes that the emergence of art, fine silverwork, and elaborate furniture and the dramatic architecture of early America were made possible by a culture that had, as its backbone, the iconic long rifle. This program will be held on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn and includes admission to the special exhibit “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War” in the Snyder Gallery, located on the second floor of the barn. The founder of American Historic Services, Hankla is a collector, researcher, lecturer, and writer focused on Kentucky’s heritage. He has been an active member of the Kentucky Rifle Association since 1990, is past president and co-founder of the Contemporary Longrifle Association, and is editor-inchief of American Tradition Magazine. He builds traditional Kentucky long rifles and in 1984 was awarded a National Endowment of the Arts Folk Art Apprenticeship grant to study with legendary riflesmith Hershel House. He worked as a historical actor and educator for 23 years with the Kentucky Humanities Council, and in 2012, he was cast in the leading role in the PBS documentary “An Audacious American,” the story of abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay.
