Grace Julian and Beth Horst, who co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in March, had been facilitating student gardening programs separately at their children’s elementary schools in the Penn Manor School District for years before they heard about each other’s initiatives and connected. In an effort to teach more students about growing their own food, the pair teamed up to establish The Edible Classroom and partner with schools in the Lancaster area to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. “Everything in the garden aligns with K-6 curriculum,” Julian noted. “You can learn about something on paper, but to plant and pick and taste it yourself really makes it real.” Since March, The Edible Classroom has helped nine schools to develop and sustain learning gardens. Some schools, like Park Elementary, offer full summer garden programs, while others offer a month during the school year, an after-school club, or just

The Edible Classroom was also invited to provide garden education at Manor Township’s Playground in the Park program, where volunteers created a 20-by-50-foot garden plot for children to help tend and harvest vegetables. a few days here and there. Julian and Horst modify programs to meet whatever needs a particular class or school may have. Approximately 50 children attended the 10-week Summer in the Garden program at Park Elementary, which met outside the school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Columbia Borough has helped to fund the program. In April, students in technology classes at Columbia High School built the raised beds for the garden and helped the elementary students to fill the space with leaf compost and soil. One local business provided discounted lumber for the project, and others donated leaf compost and topsoil. Several organizations donated seeds, and the fourthgrade classes at Park set to work planting lettuce, radishes, and other seasonally appropriate crops before the school year ended. Once the summer program began, the children who took part in the program helped to plant and tend to additional vegetables. Children not only had the chance to help plant and tend to the garden but also to prepare and enjoy fresh snacks. Whenever a bumper crop occurred, the students got to take fresh food home

price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go, remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me. Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us, Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it. Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of

For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery Center, which will include a 30- to 90-day intensive program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the groundbreaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord,” said Hoover. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day.” Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,” he
said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,” he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. … There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.” Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with opioid addiction, and we are trying to do things legislatively,” said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.” Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a secluded place (to pray),” he said. “For all those who struggle with addictions, there is hope.” As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a
