explained that in a scramble, all the players play from the best spot. “Everyone moves their ball to that spot (after the first shot),” she said. Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closest-to-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the tournament day. Some of the sponsors for the tournament include Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; Kegel’s Produce; Cain’s Lanes; Border Magic of Lancaster; Kinetics of Windstream; and Kreider Farms. In addition, Kreider Farms has donated mugs, shirts, and hats, and Cain’s Lanes has donated bowling games for door prizes. “If anyone from the community has door prizes to donate, they can reach out (to us),” said Lisa. Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well. Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been

mental health in children and teenagers. One result of that connection will be a Mini Golf Tournament held at The Shack on Saturday, Sept. 19. All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19-hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also

To honor paramedic Doug Zima, who passed away while on duty, a tree was planted at the Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) Elizabethtown Station on July 20. A plaque was also placed in front of the tree thanking Zima for his 26 years of service. The Kousa dogwood tree and plaque were donated by Penn State Hershey Medical Center (HMC). In attendance at the ceremony were Zima’s widow,

in school that mental health is a medical issue,” said Lisa. “(Having a mental health issue) doesn’t mean you’re different. It just means you have something that needs to be treated.” Lisa, who owns The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.” Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of

In “Mastering the Monologue,” local director and actor Kevin Ditzler will guide attendees through what they need to know to make an impact at their next general audition. Partcipants may join via Zoom for this small group class that will allow them to work privately, perform for an audience, and receive real-time feedback. This class will provide weekly 60-minute group sessions for performance and one weekly 30-minute session for each student with Ditzler for in-depth one-on-one work. Participants will leave the class with two audition-ready monologues.

Acting and Scene Study will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5. This class is for committed, experienced actors age 18 and up who wish to refine their craft. Starting from existing foundations of technique, participants will consider physical life, emotional life, and character development through text analysis, improvisation, and warm-up exercises with paired scene partners to explore the actors’ instrument in a safe environment. Managing artistic director Jim Johnson will teach the class. Class size will be limited to 12 to 16 actors. A final showcase is possible, but the emphasis will be on discovering strengths and weaknesses, not performance. There is a registration fee for each class. However, Zima was pronounced dead later that evening. Zima was a Lancaster County paramedic for 26 years, serving the majority of his time with NWEMS. “He answered his last call approximately 30 minutes prior to the end of his shift that day, Shenk noted. The idea to plant a tree in Zima’s honor came from staff members at Penn State HMC. Melanie Weaver and Lori English, representing Penn State HMC, presented the plaque, which also includes the Paramedic’s Prayer, to the staff of NWEMS during the ceremony. “He was a friend and a colleague of ours, and here at Northwest EMS they are more than friends - they are family, Weaver said during the ceremony. “When Doug decided to take his wings, Lori and I were there that day. challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,”

she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there. After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book - trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed

from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately

Chocolate Walk Canceled

September

1–15

The Lititz Chocolate Walk, which was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, has been canceled due to ongoing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. This cancellation, along with the cancellation of the Lititz Pretzel Fest earlier this year, has left an $80,000 funding shortfall for the local youth charities and organizations that the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area supports. Through the support of the community, the club has raised more than $800,000 in the past 25 years to help support local children. To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area and the organizations it supports, or to donate, readers may visit www.lititzkiwanis.com. All donations go to local children’s charities.
