Determined To Give Back Walk Of Love Cross Country 5K Scheduled For Sept. 14 By Chelsea Peifer

In lieu of a sweet 16th birthday celebration a few years ago, Sayali Yoder opted to invite friends and family to join her in participating in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk. Sayali’s parents received one of the very first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtownbased nonprofit committed to aiding orphans in crisis around the world. Born without hands and feet, Sayali went through more than 26 surgeries and lived in an orphanage until being adopted at age 3. Today, she is determined to give back to the organization that she says helped her to become who she is. Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer, Athena, and set a fundraising goal of $1,000 - only to surpass that goal by raising more than $5,000. The race itself proved to be a challenge, as her prostheses are not designed for far distances or bumpy terrain, but she crossed the finish line. Now a See Walk Of Love pg 4

Sayali Yoder, pictured crossing the finish line at the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K in 2015 (left photo) and as a toddler (right photo), is training to participate in this year’s 5K on Sept. 14 at Ironstone Ranch in Elizabethtown. Sayali was born with missing limbs, and her parents received one of the first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope.

Outdoors Expo from pg 1 men, women, and children. Chapman will make his presentation at about 7 p.m. He shares a unique blend of music and storytelling that is designed to encourage and uplift the family. His presentation at the expo will include thought-provoking lyrics, spiritual truths, humor, music, and visual illustrations. A successful singer, songwriter, recording artist, and author, he travels extensively with his wife, Anne, throughout America. While he will be appearing solo at the expo, he and his wife have performed at various Lancaster County locations in the past. As an avid outdoorsman, he notes that his primary interest is in being a hunter. His passion for engaging in what he calls “the fair chase” led to his writing many books for sportsmen and women. Along with his best-selling books involving hunting insights, he also penned a book for fathers called “10 Things I Want My Son to Know.” “Years ago, I discovered that not only

can hunting yield nourishment for the body, (but) there is also food for the soul and spirit that can be gleaned in the field and woods,” he explained. “The lifechanging and character-building insights I’ve encountered while outdoors are the greater trophies that hang on the wall of my heart.” He shares these discoveries in his books and his live presentations. “Because of my obvious love of the outdoors, I’ve been given many opportunities to speak and sing at events that are uniquely designed for those who also love the great outdoors,” Chapman said. “While at these gatherings, the most important message I offer to the folks is that not only can they enjoy going out into creation, (but) there is greater joy in allowing the Creator to come into us through His Son.” The expo is sponsored and coordinated by the EBIC men’s ministry team. Various local businesses and individuals also donate to this event, and their contributions are acknowledged at the expo. For more information or to sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 10, readers may visit www.etownbic.org/mensministry or call the church office on weekdays at 717-367-2651. EBIC is located next to the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds.

Festivities will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9 a.m. Activities at this year’s Heart Walk will include free CPR demonstrations, blood pressure screenings and children’s activities. Lancaster General Health will welcome walkers at the registration table and hand out healthy snacks along the walk route. The event will culminate with a 1-mile or 3-mile walk around the Franklin & Marshall University campus. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are permitted to join their humans in the concourse of the Barnstormers’ home stadium and during the walk, but dogs are not permitted on the baseball field. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has served as a presenting sponsor of the movement since 2013. In addition to supporting the Heart Walk, LG Health has supported the planting of American Heart Association Teaching Gardens at five Lancaster elementary schools, the establishment of a labeled walking path around Buchanan Park, the installation of three bicycle repair stations in the city of Lancaster and one along WERT trail in Warwick

UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Organizers have set a goal to raise $325,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes. Dollars raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a force

COBYS from pg 1 Anne Stokes, director of development with COBYS, would like to see larger crowds at the 2019 Bike and Hike, and she and Doug May, COBYS’ communications and development manager, have planned to open this year’s Bike and Hike up to more area residents when it is held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 8. The 65-mile motorcycle ride registration will begin at 12:45 p.m., and the ride will take off at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the walk and bicycle ride will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the 25-mile bike ride will begin at 2 p.m. The walk and 10-mile bike ride will begin at 2:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the COBYS family celebration will begin. “We are adding more family-friendly celebration pieces throughout the afternoon,” explained Stokes. “We are looking to make sure that folks who might not know about COBYS will feel free to stop by and … learn about us.” The celebration will include a silent auction featuring gift certificates, theme baskets, tickets for local sports competitions, and items made and sold locally, such as handmade toys. “It’s a full range (of items),” said Stokes, who noted that local businesses are welcome to donate gift cards or items or stop by during the event to meet COBYS representatives. Donations will be welcomed up to the day of the event. Past events have been known for celebrating with ice cream, but Stokes noted this year, popcorn will be available too. Silent auction winners and door prize winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m., along with a short presentation by COBYS. Stokes said that the event brings together people from all parts of the community. “It’s individuals from churches and youth groups gathering together with local businesses and area residents to not only do something fun, but to raise critical funds for COBYS and celebrate all the work that we do throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding communities,” she said. Funds raised through sponsorships and individual participants will aid COBYS’ general budget, which provides family services in several specific areas. “COBYS (offers) foster care, adoption, counseling, and family life education services, which includes workshops, parenting courses, and kinship navigator services,” explained Stokes. Stokes and May would be thrilled if this year’s Bike and Hike attracted up to 600 participants and raised more than $100,000. “For people who haven’t participated in the past, this is an easy way to get to know a little more about us and give it a try,” said Stokes. Readers who would like to register for the Bike and Hike may do so online at www.cobys.org/bike-and-hike. There is a minimum registration fee to take part. Individuals who have questions may email anne@cobys.org or call 717-656-6580.

“Community” is sometimes defined as “common unity.” Three area churches, although they differ in denomination, have found community through their shared love of worshipping God. On May 3, Millersville Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, East Petersburg Mennonite Church, and Sanctuary, a Vineyard Church, held their first collaborative worship night at Sanctuary. More than 100 people participated. The next collaborative night of worship will be held at East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. The worship team will be composed of musicians from each of the three churches. Members of the public are invited to attend the event, where they will be encouraged to focus on worship for, to, and because of God. “The purpose that we’re trying to accomplish in this is in keeping with Hebrews 13, where it says, ‘Come, offer a sacrifice of praise to the Lord,’” Sanctuary pastor Rip Wahlberg explained in a video about the event. “What we’re trying to do is just come and worship God together as one people of God, with no other agenda, no other self-seeking motive,

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected 1,381 pounds of nonperishable items for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Helping Harvest, formerly Greater Berks Food Bank. The Royer’s Stems Hunger event, which took place from June 22 to July 6, has collected more than eight tons of food since it began in 2011. Donors received a free carnation for each food item they contributed, up to six per visit. Besides Royer’s 16 stores, eight Drayer Physical Therapy Institute locations in the area served as drop-off locations. Lebanon-based Royer’s operates 15 Royer’s stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. Sister company Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts has one Harrisburg store. just to bless the heart of God.” “When I think about these events, my mind goes to Psalm 133:1, which tells us how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity,” added Millersville BIC pastor Chris Freet. “Just thinking about three churches from three denominations coming together to worship God and bless His heart, who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?” The third collaborative night of worship will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, at Millersville BIC, 3116 Blue Rock Road, Millersville. already,” remarked Nevin. “Something is special about this part of the river.” More recent history includes the construction of the railways along the river, thriving shad fisheries, and communities that grew as the Holtwood and Safe Harbor Dams were built. According to SNHA president Mark Platts, the River Discovery Boat Tours are the first new initiative of SNHA since its Congressional designation of Lancaster and York counties as the United States’ 55th National Heritage Area in March

2019. Grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources/Heritage Areas Program and the National Park Service/Chesapeake Bay Gateways Program enabled the rides to be offered free of charge to participants in the 2019 pilot season. The tours were developed as part of the Zimmerman Center’s official role as a National Park Service Visitor Contact & Passport Station for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct. 13. Tickets will be released incrementally, with another block of dates opening up in mid-September. Tours will be offered again in 2020. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, as participants aboard the 10-passenger pontoon boat ride south on the Lake Clarke portion of the river to the Safe Harbor Dam before circling up to Columbia and continuing back to Wrightsville. Nevin said that the tours fit well with the mission of SNHA to connect people with the Susquehanna River. Southern portions of the approximately 17-mile tour give participants a glimpse of portions of the river that cannot be seen from the roadways. “When you’re driving across the river, you don’t get the sense of scale that you do being out on a boat,” noted Nevin. Tourgoers saw plenty of wildlife on the summer tours, including numerous sightings of the often-elusive bald eagles. Visitors will get a glimpse of life along the Susquehanna River as it as today and hear about what it was like in years gone by. Stories about the rich history of the Lake Clarke portion of the river date back to when the area was the heartland of the Native American Susquehannock people. Captain Eric Wagner (right) Nevin, who also serves on the board of the guides a 10-passenger pontoon Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, boat down the Susquehanna shares about the ancient Susquehanna River during a recent River River rock art that is primarily located in Discovery Boat Tour offered to and along the river from Washington Boro the public by the Susquehanna to the Maryland state line. “The Native Americans saw this as a special place. They National Heritage Area. The created rock art here not to make it sacred boat is contracted through but rather because they saw it as sacred Long Level Marina. “The response has been overwhelming,” said Nevin, who is one of the three guides who alternate taking the lead for the boat tours. The tours begin and end at the dock across the street from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Nevin said that due to the enormous popularity of the boat tours, SNHA decided to expand its pilot season to include Fridays and to extend through Sunday, Oct. 13, rather than ending in August. Reservations may be made at www.susquehannaheritage.org/pro grams/boat-tours. The free tours are available at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and

Lineup For Travelogue Series Announced

R046061

The Rotary Club of Lititz has announced its 2019-20 Travel and Adventure Film Series lineup. The first program will feature Spain and Portugal on Sept. 7. The Rotary Club of Lititz has announced its 2019-20 Travel and Adventure Film Series program lineup. Programs will take place at the Warwick High School Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Each film will be shown twice on a select Saturday. One showing will take place at 2 p.m., with a musical prelude starting at 1:30 p.m. The second showing will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a musical prelude at 7 p.m. The Rotary Club will feature “Spain and Portugal” on Sept. 7. In the film, Marlin Darrah hosts a voyage to Spain and Portugal to explore historical events that occurred throughout these countries and 12 of their cities. Highlights include Lisbon and its architecture, Sintra’s royal palace, the Rock of Gibraltar, and Barcelona and its Mediterranean beaches. “Cuba: On the Edge of Discovery” will be shown on Nov. 9. This program explores contemporary life and historical themes to develop the story of an island people. In spite of decades of dictators and isolation, Cuba’s artists, ballet dancers and baseball players compete on the world stage. “Bhutan: The Cloud Kingdom” is slated for Jan. 4, 2020. In this film, Tom Sterling travels to the tiny independent Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, located in the Himalayas. Bhutan is an area equal to that of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. Its lowest valley floor is 2,200 feet above sea level, and its one road often disappears into the clouds at 14,000 feet or more. “China: Beyond the Wall” will be offered on Feb. 8, 2020. On a solo trip throughout China, filmmaker and author Karin Muller was invited behind the scenes of a traveling opera troop, professional chicken fights, and Shanghai’s dating market. “Venture to Alaska” will be shown on March 21, 2020. “Venture to Alaska” features the Dalton Highway, which follows the oil pipeline to Prudoe Bay, the end of the Continental Divide, where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans meet; the Eskimo village of Wales, located 50 miles from Russia; the Russian village of Moklvesh; Mount Denali; and Mount Marathon in Seward. “Pearls of the Caribbean” will be the topic on April 4, 2020. Darrah explores several islands sprinkled throughout the Caribbean. Countries and cities include San Juan, Puerto Rico; Havana, Cuba; St. Barts; St. Maarten; Antigua; Dominica; St. Lucia; and Barbados. The Caribbean features landscapes including beaches, forests, and mountains. General admission tickets will be sold at the door only. Season tickets may be purchased from any Rotary Club of Lititz member or from the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. For more details, readers may contact Dean Brandt at 717-626-4520. All of the net funds from the Travel and Adventure Film Series are given to more than 30 nonprofit service groups each year. More information about the Rotary Club of Lititz is available at www.lititzrotary.com.
