Payton Shoenfelt has a passion for helping others. She also has a talent for leadership. Now she has the chance to bring the two together as a member of the Mini-THON Student Leadership Council.

While THON features a 46-hour dance marathon as a signature event, Mini-THON at Manheim Central typically runs all night over a 12-hour period and features dancing, games, activities, food and more.As a member of the Student Leadership Council, Payton will interact with other high school juniors and seniors who will attend training webinars, create content for Four Diamonds Mini-THON newsletters, mentor other MiniTHON leaders and assist with recruitment to encourage involvement in Payton,Mini-THON.thedaughter of Marc and Jaime Shoenfelt of Manheim, noted that she’s been involved in her school’s Mini-THON since she was in eighth grade, when she took an assessment to determine potential extracurricular activities to join. “I chose to get involved with MiniTHON because I believe in the mission,” she stated. “We get to help people who are suffering with childhood cancer, and we get to meet all sorts of cool people, who are all working toward the same goal, which is ending childhood cancer.” Payton quickly took on leadership roles with Mini-THON and helped the group win an award for best use of an online fundraising program the first year she participated. She’s looking forward to serving on the Leadership Council and sharing her enthusiasm for Mini-THON. “We’ll be meeting every month or so to talk about what our schools have been doing and to help each other keep students engaged,” she said. “I’m really excited about it.”

When Brian Boycan, senior development officer with HOPE International, visited Rwanda in July along with HOPE president Peter Greer, he met a woman named Clementine who was growing her wholesaling business with the help of the organization.

Payton, a junior at Manheim Central High School, applied to be a part of the statewide group of student leaders earlier this summer and was selected to be one of 10 students from across Pennsylvania on the council. To kick-start the role, she joined about 1,000 students and teachers for a leadership summit in Hershey earlier this month, where the group listened to speakers, learned more about miniTHON and gathered ideas for getting the most out of each school’s event. Modeled after THON, a student-run philanthropy organization at Penn State University that raises funds to fight childhood cancer through Four Diamonds, MiniTHON offers high school students a way to get involved in the effort.

Emily Witmer, who is the coordinator of the Farm Show queen competition along with her mother, Jennifer Witmer, was the 2017 Farm Show queen. She said the event offers many opportunities for participants. “As a past queen myself, I would encourage young women to compete in the Manheim Farm Show queen program because of the positive impact it had on my life,” Emily stated. “This competition is an incredible opportunity to promote agriculture, enhance your public speaking skills, as well as get involved in your community and all it has to Emilyoffer.”noted that any interested young women should fill out and send in the Farm Show queen application and essay and then begin preparing their speech. She added that candidate interviews will be held in September. See Queen pg 2

“Clementine started in 2012 with a group loan of $1,000,” recounted Boycan. With that loan, Clementine See HOPE pg 3

Along with winning a cash prize of $1,000, the Farm Show queen is responsible for representing the Manheim Farm Show well, Emily said. “She is expected to hand out ribbons and participate in as many events during the week of Farm Show as possible,” she explained, adding, “After Farm Show week is when the real work begins. Manheim Farm Show’s queen is required to enter the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Contest.” In the months between October and January, the queen committee works alongside the queen to prepare her for the State Fair Queen Contest, where she will compete against 50 to 60 other fair queens for the state title, Emily remarked. “The preparation for the state contest includes refining her speech and public speaking skills, reviewing any possible interview questions and filling out an extensive application,” she said. Last year’s Manheim Farm Show queen, Anna Haldeman, was named state fair queen. Along with a queen, the Manheim Farm Show competition crowns junior queens and princesses, with those contests open to girls ages 6 to 15. Applications and a complete list of requirements for the queen, junior queen and princess competitions can be found in the 2022 Farm Show Premium Book, which can be viewed at www.manheimfarmshow.org.

The annual Labor Day Auction will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. The rain-or-shine event, which has been held for the past 38 years at various locations, will benefit Hospice & Community Care. Admission and parking will be free. Both days of the auction will begin with food that is made from scratch and sold by members of the Amish community. Handmade doughnuts, sticky buns, pretzel logs and more will be provided by multiple local families as a way to give back to Hospice & Community Care for the services it offers the area. “Hospice cares for several Amish community members. Patients and their families are able to stay at home and dictate the care they want,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy for Hospice & Community Care. “It’s very significant the Amish community can help us in that way. Their food sales account for a huge portion of the auction’s revenue each year, and their milkshakes are rival to none.” Both lunch and dinner will also be available to purchase later in the day.

According to Boycan, the organization has served 2.4 million people since its inception. Paige Snyder, events planner with HOPE, added that aiding those 2.4 million translates to $1.5 billion in loans. To help enable HOPE to continue its mission, Snyder is working to plan this year’s golf tournament, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 16, in three locations. A round will begin at 1 p.m. at Heritage Hills Golf Course, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Turf Valley Resort, 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. Those wishing to register may do so at www.hopeinternational.org/golf by Friday, Sept. 2. The event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. “The evening begins with a cocktail hour and silent auction,” Dixon explained. “Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals, we will be auctioning off a wide variety of items.” Auction items include eight vacation packages for domestic and international trips, provided by AmFund; a variety of experiences such as a charcuterie class or photography session; gift baskets; and more. Guests will be invited to enjoy the FX Photo Booth during the cocktail hour as well. Helping enterprising women like Clementine through microfinance and savings groups are ways HOPE helps change narratives. HOPE also teaches farmers to be good stewards of the land. Since the invasion, he noted, “the needs are great and the opportunities to help are incredible.”

just seeing people sitting together, meeting new faces from other communities and enjoying everything it has to offer,” said Kristin Troop, the event organizer. “It’s a different piece of something we can offer the community, and it highlights our amphitheater. We love sharing the beautiful park with others.”

The East Pete Blues Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., from 1 to 7 p.m. The rainor-shine event is free to attend and has been expanded to include an extra hour of music, with six different acts slated to perform at the amphitheater throughout the day.

The blues fest will host locally based artists as well as musicians from various other communities on the East Coast; the local acts will include Bobby Gentilo, Smokehouse 4 and Blues On The Loose. Headlining the festival is Clarence Spady & The Electric City Band, hailing from Scranton. Other artists performing will be Acoustic Stew of Harrisburg and Tiffany Pollack, and each band will perform a 40-to 45-minute set. Multiple food trucks will be present at the event, including Bellys BBQ & Burrito, Dutch Country Concessions and Scoop Ó Dough. A new addition to the festival will be a beer garden, hosted by Mad Chef Craft Brewing, that will be open from 1 to 6:30 p.m. “The blues fest is a fun day of free music that we’ve been hosting for the last 11 years,” said Randy Bucksner, the event promoter. “I’m a saxophone player and very involved with the blues scene. I’m always discovering new acts that I think people will enjoy at the blues fest.” Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the park for the event. The East Pete Blues Fest was first conceived by a former mayor of East Petersburg and avid blues fan. Over the last decade, the event has served to highlight local musicians in addition to connecting East Petersburg to other music scenes up and down the East Coast. “My favorite thing about the blues fest is

Several aspects of the blues fest have been improved upon or added in recent years. Most recently, the amphitheater was introduced to the park, providing a large stage where musicians can perform.

purchase during the cocktail hour,” Dixon remarked. “Ninety-nine of the glasses will hold cubic zirconia, and one will have a real diamond. A qualified jeweler will be on-hand to inspect the gems and find the lucky winner of the real diamond. The winner will be announced later in the evening and will be able to exchange their diamond for a piece of jewelry valued at $2,500 to $3,000, generously donated by Andrew Douglas Jewelers.” The evening will also include a dinner hour with a buffet catered by Food for Thought Catering, an open bar sponsored by Funk Brewing, a short program and dancing, Dixon said. Funds raised at the gala directly support families and individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the greater Elizabethtown area, which includes the northwest region of Lancaster County, she noted. “The gala’s fundraising efforts help support the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter, Enrichment Center, supportive housing programs, eviction prevention and the Crisis Response Counseling Program at the Elizabethtown Area Middle and High schools, as well as additional programs and services offered by ECHOS,” Dixon commented. She noted that the gala would not be possible without the support of sponsors including Legacy Maker Sponsor Stone Gables Estate, Dream Maker Sponsor DDMP and other contributing sponsors. “This is a unique event that is made possible by the generous and continued support from our community,” Dixon stated. “This support will allow us to continue offering free services to individuals and families in our community who are directly affected by the housing crisis.” The deadline for purchasing tickets is Friday, Sept. 9. Tickets may be purchased at Dixon.org/events/gala/https://echoslancasterorbycontactingatdixonn@echoslancaster.org. Gala frompg

Multiple specialty auctions will begin following breakfast, held simultaneously throughout the day in five separate buildings. The auctions will not be limited to one category; the event will include auctions for tools, gift baskets, gently used items, handmade quilts and sports memorabilia, to name only a few.

“You can find anything you could possibly think of,” said Lewis. “If you aren’t interested in an auction, you can just pop into the next building and find so many different things.” Three cars will be auctioned this year, and previous years’ auctions have seen the sale of boats, jet skis and campers. At 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, a winner’s name will be drawn for a giveaway of a 2022 Ford Mustang: tickets to enter may be purchased at the event. For those interested in supporting Hospice & Community Care without purchasing an item at an auction, the event will offer an opportunity to purchase a “day of care” from the organization. The purchase will fund an entire day of service for a patient in hospice care. The auction is the largest fundraiser for Hospice & Community Care and raised over $800,000 last year. “Our decisions about who we’ll care for don’t have to be made based on how patients can pay for care,” said Lewis. “Because of community support, we’re able to prioritize making sure service is available for anyone.” Hospice is a locally owned nonprofit hospice center. “We fulfill patients’ goals and wishes and help to keep them comfortable,” said Lewis. “It gives the rest of the family a chance to just be there for their loved one without worrying about providing care to them.”For more information, hospicecommunity.org.contactwww.hospicecommunity.orgvisitorLewisatalewis@
