A Heart For The Community BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Cindy Hanna shows off the ever-changing inventory at Nearly-Nu.

Giving Back And Changing Lives BY CATHY MOLITORIS

pend some time with Cindy Hanna, the manager of NearlyNu Thrift Shop, and you’ll hear story after story of how the nonprofit has made a difference in the Manheim community. There’s the time she was shopping at a local store and the cashier told Hanna that Nearly-Nu had raised funds to pay her parents’ mortgage for a month during a family illness. Or there were the Manheim Central High School girls who came in looking to buy items for the school’s drama production, with $17 in their pockets. “I helped them find what they needed, and I told them to keep their $17,” Hanna recalled. Once, a woman came in right before Christmas, and Hanna soon learned the customer had lost everything in a fire. “She was worried about giving her children a nice Christmas,” Hanna said. “I knew we had a Christmas tree in our basement, so I brought that up, and I gathered some decorations and lights. I helped her pick out things

“You never know what you’re going to see. Everything is priced to sell.” Nearly-Nu accepts community donations of clothing and household items, except for furniture. Donations can be dropped off at a bin on the store’s back porch or brought inside when the store is open. “We sell just about everything you could imagine,” Hanna said. “I sold a bag of rocks once. I sold a bag of bottlecaps. I’ve sold things off our porch before they even got inside the building.”

Items for sale include clothing in all sizes (even outfits for dogs), jewelry, purses, stuffed animals, DVDs, books and more. “You won’t believe what you’ll find here,” Hanna stated. “You never know what you’re going to see. Everything is priced to sell.” Hanna is the only paid employee, and she relies on a team of volunteers to help sort, price and sell the inventory. “We are always looking for more volunteers,” she said. “Our volunteers are so important.” Hanna, a lifelong Manheim resident, has been the store manager for about five years, and in that time, she’s become friends with repeat customers, some of whom come from out of state to shop. She said she’s seen firsthand how generous the Manheim community is, whether it’s the plethora of donations that come in every day or the willingness of customers to pitch in and unpack boxes and hang up clothes to sell. “I love my job,” she stated. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” For more information, search for “Nearly Nu” on Facebook.

Making A Difference BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The word “Kiwanis” comes from a Native American expression meaning “we make a noise,” but for the members of the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, the “K” could stand for “kids.” “This is an organization that’s very focused on the children and very family focused,” said Scott McCabe, incoming president of the club. “It’s all about the kids.” The club, which draws members from the greater Donegal School District area as well as Manheim,

for her kids. By the time she left, we were both crying.” This is just some of the impact the thrift store has had on the community since it opened 40 years ago. Over the years, the store, located at 9 N. Main St., has given back almost $400,000 to more than 45 local organizations and individuals.

Josh Placeway believes a church should be an active part of its community. That’s one of the things that drew him to his new role as pastor of Manheim Grace Brethren Church, 333 E. High St. Placeway became the pastor in late June. “I’m excited about the direction that this church is going,” he said. “Talking to the people here, I realized that our hearts aligned to the idea of wanting to reach out to the community. Change happens by going out in the community.” Placeway was enthusiastic about the opportunity to return to the place he once called home. He grew up in Elizabethtown and graduated from Mount Calvary Christian School. “I’m also excited to get back to Lancaster County,” he said. “My wife and I are really happy to be living in Manheim. We’re looking forward to meeting people in the community. We are ready to put down roots here.” Before coming to Manheim, Placeway served as a pastor at a church in a suburb of Chicago for 10 years. Although he enjoyed the job, he was ready for a new challenge.

“I was looking for a change, and I was looking to come back to this area,” he explained. “The Lord started stirring things in my heart, and I realized it was time to make a change. I truly believe the Lord guided our steps in bringing us here.” In his new position, Placeway sees a bright future for the church. “Overall, my goal is to help people discover who Jesus is,” he stated. “I believe that life change happens through Him.”

Faith Driven Movements To Visit Lancaster County BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Well, it won’t exactly be a visit, but there will be a virtual watch party. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 9, Christian Business Fellowship and Mission Church will co-host a watch party for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences: “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and “Faith Driven Inventors.” The mission of Faith Driven Movements is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people to use their time, talents, and other resources in the marketplace. Faith Driven Movements brings together leaders from around the world who seek to make a financial, social, environmental, and spiritual impact through their business ventures. Last year, Faith Driven Movements held its first global, virtual conference. The first day was catered to entrepreneurs and the second to investors. The

same two-day format will be used this year. Watch parties in Lancaster County for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences will be held at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. On both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, registration will open at 11 a.m. and the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided both days, and the conference will conclude at 5 p.m. “The price to attend is kept very reasonable,” said Jeff Hostetter, member of Mission Church and Christian Business Fellowship. “People can come to one day or they get a combo ticket to attend both.” There will be 31 virtual speakers at “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and 33 at “Faith Driven Inventors Live.” Among them will be Tim Keller, Cathie Wood, and Donald Miller. Keller is the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to

It will feature locally-made food, specialty auctions and more. Proceeds will benefit patients and families receiving hospice care, palliative care, and grief support. Three specialty auctions will be held on Saturday. The Art Auction, sponsored by Evans Burial Vaults, will highlight original paintings from well-known local artists. in our community

For many in our community, taxes can feel like a burden. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers work to help lift that burden by offering low income families free tax preparation. Tax refunds give these families a springboard for the future by putting their hard-earned money back into their hands. It's a simple way to help in your community. Want to volunteer with VITA? We need volunteers like you! Contact smethers@uwlanc.org for more details and to sign up for an Informational Session in September or October.

Eat. Bid. Repeat.

“Volunteering with VITA is a great way to help people save money and not be worried about the process.” -Lenny, VITA Volunteer

WHY VOLUNTEER WITH VITA?

1. MAKE AN IMPACT

VITA volunteers directly affect the community in tangible ways. Clients saved over $3 million in tax preparation fees in 2020. As a volunteer tax preparer, you can help families get their tax refunds, which helps build financial stability.

Solanco Fairgrounds, Quarryville

September

2. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE With day, evening, and weekend hours at more than 20 locations across the county, you have the opportunity to help as your schedule allows. Plus, tax season isn't year-round, so you get to enjoy your summers.

4&6

3. LEARN A NEW SKILL No experience is necessary. As a volunteer, you have the chance to try you hand at a new skill. VITA will spend time preparing you to become certified in tax preparation through free online and classroom training.

4. GET TO KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY Once you're certified, you will work side by side with Lancaster County residents to prepare their tax returns. Our goal is to provide services for 11,200 residents this year. It's a great way to meet your neighbors and strengthen your community, and make an immediate difference.

Bible2School Receives Donation Matthews Children’s Foundation recently presented Manheim-based Bible2School with a check for $1,000. Bible2School, a nondenominational faith-based nonprofit organization, is committed to serving children attending

public school while using the Bible as the foundation for outreach and education. Matthews Children’s Foundation of Pittsburgh is a nonprofit organization associated with Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions.

Derek Miller (right), regional sales manager for Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions, presents a check for $1,000 to Kori Pennypacker from Bible2School.

The foundation exclusively supports children’s charities across the U.S. by awarding grants three times a year. Since its inception in 1992, the foundation has granted nearly $5 million to community-based, nonprofit chil-

dren’s organizations nationwide. All recipients must be recommended by a Matthews Aurora funeral home partner. William P. Spence Funeral & Cremation Services recommended Bible2School for a grant.

Swarrs Mark 50th Anniversary

Joyce and Ken Swarr recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, which occurred on Dec. 18, 2020. Heart from pg 1 He also wants to encourage more community involvement from the church and has already felt support from the congregation for that goal. “This church as a whole has a desire to have an impact on our community,” he said. When he’s not at work, Placeway has been busy discovering Manheim and watching his three children learn to love the county he left years ago. “ We love exploring around town, whether it’s going on a bike ride or getting ice cream,” he commented. “It’s really neat to see this place through my kids’ eyes.”

And he’s got his own eyes set on the good things he sees coming for Manheim Grace. “My focus is on the future. I’m excited about what God has in store for this church and the impact we can have on the community,” he remarked. “If you want to come in on a Sunday morning and be greeted by smiling faces, connect with other people and really discover who Jesus is, this is the place to do that.” Manheim Grace holds services at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Services are held in person and are also livestreamed. For more information, visit www.manheimgrace.org.

Eberly said the club meets twice a month, but members do not need to commit to regular attendance. “We’re looking for people to join us in our mission, but I like to say, ‘A meeting is fine, but service is better,’” she remarked, adding that volunteers can help as their schedules allow. At REYS in Mount Joy, executive director Cristina Paden has seen firsthand the difference the Kiwanis Club makes. “We are greatly blessed by the partnership of the Kiwanis Club,” she stated. “They don’t just support us (financially). We see their faces here all the time. Their service to us is truly a blessing.” The Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems will host a chicken and pork barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 25, at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Tickets are available at the Mount Joy Chamber office, 62 E. Main St.; at J.B. Hostetter; or through club members. organizes service projects throughout the year. The club members “make a noise,” as the word Kiwanis suggests, by making a noticeable difference in their community. Club projects include a community safety day and bike rodeo, meal sponsorship and service at Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS), a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast at Milanof-Schock Library and highway cleanup. The group sponsors Key Club at Donegal High School, and Key Club members have helped with weeding at Old Standby Park, bell ringing for the Salvation Army and other projects. “We are supporting students to become service leaders in the community,” noted Linda Eberly, current club president. Like many service organizations, the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems is seeking new members, Eberly said, noting that the organization provides opportunities for fun and fellowship while giving back to the community. For Diane Rorabaugh, a retired teacher, the club provided a way to continue to connect with youths. “I missed the kids,” she said. “I love working with and doing things for kids, and I can do that with this club.” John Gish has been a member of the club for 18 years and encouraged newcomers to join as a way to learn more about their neighbors. “It’s a good way to get to know the community,” he said. “You can feel like you’re making a difference locally.” Judy Kay Bard noted that the club has members who have varying lengths of service. “Several of us just joined this group in the last few years, so it’s an evolving group,” she explained. “ We’re always looking for new members.”

Making A Big Difference For A Tiny Project

Tom Zimmerman (far left) receives a check from (continuing from left) VFW members Ben Green, Deb Sigman, Dawn Coover and Jo Good. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Jo Good believes good things come in small packages. Good, a lifetime member of the Mount Joy VFW Post 5752 Auxiliary, learned about a project to build a village of tiny homes for homeless veterans in Harrisburg,

initiative, she approached the Mount Joy VFW and asked if it would be OK if the auxiliary raised funds for the tiny homes through a sub sale. “They not only said yes, but they also ended up co-chairing it with me,” Good recalled. Through a sub sale in May and June, matching funds donated by the auxiliary and contributions from VFW members, the club was able to present a check for $3,000 to Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania in July. “The money will help with start-up costs for this project, including engineering fees, easements and installing utility lines,” said Tom Zimmerman, president and co-founder of the Harrisburg-based Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania. The tiny homes will be built along the Susquehanna River - but above the flood plain - and will provide temporary, transitional housing for veterans. “We’re going to be focusing on homeless veterans who have not succeeded in the infrastructure that’s already out there (including VA hospitals and homeless shelters),” Zimmerman explained. “These are people who have fallen through the cracks.” The project is modeled on a similar tiny home community for veterans in Racine, Wis., he said, noting that the tiny home concept works well for veterans who have PTSD and can’t sleep in a room with 20 other people like they might encounter in a homeless shelter. Along with the homes, the project will feature a community center where the veterans See VFW pg 9

The Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event provides fun for people of all ages.

For about nine years, Narvon resident J. Arthur Moore, a retired teacher and author, has developed Civil War programs to be presented at schools and libraries. Moore not only writes his historical fiction from the point of view of the soldiers in the Civil War, but also shares the history of the real boys who served in the Civil War in his presentations. The presentations are also part of the Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations at

the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. This year’s encampment, sponsored by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Courtesy of Moore’s book sales, the event is free to the public. “Education is important,” said Moore. In 2019, Moore was nominated and selected to receive

Freedoms Foundation’s National Award, the George Washington Honor Medal. According to David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promotion of an understanding and appreciation for the country’s heritage, principles, and freedoms. More information can be found by visiting www.jarthurmoore.com. According to Moore, Lancaster County is directly connected to Civil War history. “Lancaster County was the fifth part of the efforts to get to Harrisburg, but (the Confederates) got stopped at the bridge in Wrightsville,” he explained. “Thousands of troops were recruited out of Lancaster County, and troops from Lancaster County fought in Gettysburg. It’s part of America’s history and part of our (local) history.” At the weekend event, there will be tours of the camp, a food vendor, tactical demonstrations, and battle re-enactments. Visitors will be able to meet and talk with boy soldiers from the war, President Abraham Lincoln, first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and the Lincolns’ sons Robert and Tad. “It will be a family event,” stated Moore. “Kids can recognize that children were part of the history, too.” At the event, there will be a small fee for house tours and parking. There will be no charge for vans and buses. A period photographer is needed for the event. Those interested can email Moore at joemoore3 @comcast.net or call 717-3515450. Callers should leave a message with call-back information. For more information about the encampment, email solancohistorical@gmail.com.
