When children attend a Bible2School class, they get to experience not only lessons from the Bible, but also focused attention from volunteers who care, said Carol Rabold, program coordinator. “This is a safe space where kids can know somebody is listening,” she said. “There’s a lot of time for us to have conversations. They can ask questions and talk about what’s on their Bible2Schoolmind.” classes are now forming for the upcoming school year. They will kick off the week of Monday, Sept. 26, at districts throughout Lancaster County, including Manheim Central. The Manheim-based Bible2School program is offered at Doe Run and See Values pg 2

Esbenshade said the Tapas Shindig will allow people to celebrate the completion of the Survivor Center and will help to continue to raise awareness of the need for NSI’s services. “Come for a fun evening and connect with the community to better understand the issue of sex trafficking happening all around us,” she remarked, “while hearing stories of hope, healing and restoration.”

Giving women an opportunity to hope again. That’s part of the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI), a nonprofit that works to combat human trafficking. You can help support that mission by attending the Tapas Shindig. The fundraising event will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The evening will feature networking time, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program, a live auction and dessert and coffee. This is the fourth year for the Tapas Shindig, said Janelle Esbenshade, interim executive director of NSI. “In 2019, we wanted to create an event that was nontraditional from the typical sit-down dinner experience,” she explained. “(We wanted) to offer individuals an opportunity to connect with one another in the community over good food and drinks while learning about the mission of North Star and how they can help support survivors of sex trafficking.” NSI was founded in 2010 with a goal of providing physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care with a Christ-centered focus. The organization operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for female survivors of human trafficking. “The program is strengthsbased, tailored to the survivors’ individual needs and matched to their current stage of change,” Esbenshade stated. “Each woman participates in individual and group therapy; has access to basic medical, dental and legal services; and receives an education and job-skills training. Our goal is for each survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored so she can return to the community and enjoy a life of sustained independence.”

“This is our club’s biggest car show of the year,” said Lancaster County Corvette Club member Mary Anne Lewandowski, describing the American Legends People’s Choice Fun Show. The show, presented by the club and Whitmoyer Auto Group, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Show 3

NSI estimates that tens of thousands of people are victims of sex trafficking in the United States, and the organization turns away up to 10 survivors a week due to lack of space. To serve more survivors, NSI launched a capital campaign to raise funds to build the Survivor Center adjacent to The Harbor. Along with providing restoration services and treatment for local survivors who do not require housing, the center will now house NSI’s offices and programming, allowing an 80% increase in occupancy at The Harbor.

Baron elementary schools for second-, third- and fourthgraders. Classes meet one day a week for an hour over the students’ lunch and recess time. “The kids eat their lunch with us, and we teach them a Bible lesson,” Rabold explained. “We also love to add in science experiments and other activities to make it fun for them.” After a wholegroup session, students are broken up into small groups. “They meet with the same adult every week, talking about the lesson they learned, sometimes playing a game or doing a craft,” she stated. “The small groups allow them to develop a safe relationship with an adult who loves them and who loves Jesus. There are some really neat conversations that happen during that small-groupBible2Schooltime.”classes are a mix of students who regularly attend church and those who do not, Rabold said, adding that this mix helps to spark some great discussions. “It’s an opportunity for the kids who go to church regularly to share what they believe and the kids who don’t have a home church to be introduced to this belief system,” she remarked. She believes that Bible2School classes play an important role in a child’s day, even more so post-pandemic. “These kids were really going through a formative time during the height of COVID,” she said. “Last year, the questions we had were deeper. The kids had a lot more concerns about safety and welfare of their families. They had bigger concerns and a lot more fears. This gives them a safe place to talk about what’s worrying them.” She also noted that Bible2School classes promote values that complement what children are learning in public school. “Our goal is to come alongside the school when we’re teaching our kids,” Rabold said. “We’re teaching them about honesty, trustworthiness, valuing other people. Our message is about honoring others and loving others.” While classes are forming, volunteer adults are also needed to run the classes, Rabold commented. “It’s great for people who have flexible schedules, because we meet in the middle of the day,” she said. “We ask volunteers to commit to two hours a week.” She noted that training and an easy-to-follow curriculum are provided for volunteers. “This is a great opportunity for people who love kids and love to have fun with kids and who love Jesus,” she stated. College sweethearts, they bonded over Scott’s 1968 Camaro, and for their 25th wedding anniversary, they specialordered a Camaro and drove it across Route 66. They noted that there’s something special about Corvette culture. “A Corvette is just the cream of American-built vehicles,” Scott said. “When you drive or ride in one, it’s a different experience than any other car. When you pass another Corvette driver on the road, you wave to each other.”Scott and Mary Anne emphasized that the American Legends car show is a fun day for everyone - participants and spectators alike. “It’s not a judged show,” Mary Anne said. “The awards are people’s choice, so every person who enters a car gets to vote.” She added that many of the car owners bring lawn chairs and sit by their cars. “People love to talk about their cars, and they encourage people to ask questions,” she stated.Last year’s show drew about 140 cars, more than 100 of which were Corvettes. Some vehicles dated back to the 1940s. “We really embrace those,” Scott said. “We love it when people say, ‘Oh, my dad had a car like this.’ Or they say, ‘I had a Corvette, but I sold it when I had kids.’ We love to hear peopleScottreminisce.”andMary Anne noted that the car show wouldn’t be possible without the support of the 100-plus-member Lancaster County Corvette Club. “We are so grateful for our club members who volunteer to help with this event,” Mary Anne said. “We couldn’t do it withoutPreregistrationthem.” for the car show is available for a discount before Saturday, Sept. 17. BY CATHY MOLITORIS Fun and learning will go hand in hand when Chiques PreK opens at Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The private school will operate Mondays through Fridays yearround and will offer classes for children ages 3 to 5. Cindy Beyerlein, acting director, said the school is a natural fit for the church because it will further the church’s mission of community interaction. “We were looking for opportunities to expand into the community,” she stated. “We wanted to increase our outreach and find new ways to connect with thePlanscommunity.”began for the preschool in January, and Emmy Brenner was hired as the lead teacher. She’ll be joined in the classroom by assistant teacher Kathleen Geigley, along with church volunteers. Beyerlein noted that the teacher-to-student ratio will be 1 to 10. Brenner brings with her more than 15 years of experience as a preschool teacher, including working at Head Start. She describes the Chiques PreK curriculum as academic-focused, with an emphasis on creativity. “We’ll have circle time with songs, stories and Spanish immersion. We’ll have lots of opportunities for students to burn off their excess energy with gross motor play both inside and outside. We’ll also be incorporating rest time into the day,” Brenner remarked, noting that students will bring their own lunches. Daily lessons in reading, math and science will be offered, along with smallgroup instruction and opportunities for tactile activities, imaginative play and more at various learning centers. There will also be a focus on socialemotional development of students, Brenner said. Students will also take field trips and will be treated to guest speakers and readers from the community. “I’m hoping to bring in someone from the police department as well as other community groups,” Brenner noted. Beyerlein added that the students will also be treated to intergenerational learning opportunities, when members of a group at the church called The Elderberries will visit the classroom. “We’ll be working on integrating them into the school as storytellers or to do crafts with the children,” she explained.Brenner emphasized that an academic-focused preschool program is an essential first step for students. “Pre-K gives students a better foundation for kindergarten readiness,” she stated. “It’s setting the child up for success.” School staff are working with area school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Columbia, Manheim Central and Elizabethtown, to make sure the preschool curriculum complements what the public schools are offering. Space is limited in the preschool to 20 students initially, although Beyerlein noted that there is room to expand to up to 60 students down the road. She anticipates lots of interest in the program. “The quality of this program is what sets it apart,” she said. “We are so blessed to have Emmy. We think this is going to be one of the most contagious, fun learning experiences around.” For more information on Chiques PreK, call Beyerlein at 717-682-3148. left) Brenner, pastor Michael Byrd and Beyerlein.

Two years ago, Nicky Smith, organizer of the Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC) annual Peach Festival, along with her committee, canceled the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. A year ago, Smith canceled the event again, knowing that owners of businesses and others that donate were struggling to get back on their feet. For 2022, the way is clear to hold the event, and Nicky and her helpers, including her husband, David, are hard at work. This year’s Peach Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the church, 201 E. Market St., Lititz. As in the past, the event will pay homage to all things peachy and include entertainment, kids’ activities, a silent auction, and plenty of Entertainmentfood. will be provided by LUMC contemporary worship leader Eric Fisher, who will perform beginning at noon. At 1:45 p.m., students of Cricket’s Performing Arts will take the stage. Activities for children will include yard games and a special activity coordinated by the church education teacher. At 1:15 p.m., a candy scramble will be held on the hillside adjacent to the church. Beginning at noon, a silent auction will feature up to 50 donated items, including gift cards, a throw rug contributed by Adair’s Brunnerville Flooring, an Andy Smith print, theme baskets, and passes to the Kalahari Resorts Water Park in the Poconos. David reported that sports memorabilia will include a puck donated by the Philadelphia Flyers and an autographed photo from the Philadelphia Eagles. When the auction ends at 3 p.m., winners who are present may collect their item, and those who have left will be contacted.Fooditems available for purchase will include Peachy Paterno ice cream made by Penn State Berkey Creamery and fresh peach sundaes. Hot dogs and pork barbecue sandwiches will also be sold, along with a variety of baked goods such as brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and peach-flavored items. Each year, funds raised by the Peach Festival benefit a nonprofit organization. Past recipients have included local first responders, the Lititz Public Library, and Warwick Released Time. This year, funds will be directed to Lumina, an organization with a mission to “share the love of God by equipping and encouraging people who experience poverty and hardship.” “Lumina is located in Lancaster. (The organization) works on houses and helping underprivileged individuals in Lancaster County,” said Nicky, who noted that LUMC members have helped with demolishing and rebuilding projects. “They have asked for cooking supplies for a cooking school that helps (those in need) to learn to use fresh products rather than reaching for fast food.” David said that the goal for the Peach Festival is to give at least $1,000 to the designated organization.
