Thursdays. By September 2012, more room was needed, and the parsonage to Salem United Methodist Church was available. The pantry has been located in the house ever since.

According to pantry chairperson Carolyn Peters, clients are often referred by word of mouth, the Manheim Central School District, or Bill Melone, community care pastor at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. Potential clients are asked to call the food pantry client coordinator at 717-664-1097 during office hours, which are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals wishing to volunteer may call the coordinator as well. The pantry is open specified Mondays and Thursdays for clients who are registered and have been assigned a day to visit.

“The first month or two after the virus hit, we would pack for each family by size,” recalled Auker. “(Clients) would come to the door, and we would register them and give them whatever we had packed for that number of people.” That model of food distribution continued until the end of June.

“In July they started coming in, but only one person per household, so not more than two or three clients in the building at a time,” said Nittle. At that point, the pantry began offering choices again, but volunteers now get the food items and bring them to the clients. Masks are required for volunteers and clients.

The pantry is under the umbrella of the Manheim Ministerium, and Nittle sends regular reports to the organization. “In July, we served 116 households or 338 individuals,” she said. In addition to canned goods, the pantry offers fresh produce, meats, vegetables, milk, and eggs. Food items that are often needed by the pantry include peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta, and cereal. Nonperishable items may be placed in a box on the pantry porch. Fresh produce will also be accepted. More information and a list of current needs may be found at www.manheimcentral foodpantry.org/home.html.

Runners will have to keep socially distanced during the Brittany’s Hope 5K on Sept. 19 at The Barn at Stone Gables.

BY FRANCINE FULTON

In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown.

The change, which was made due to the coronavirus pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity.

The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m.

Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, time-segmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time.

The 5K course will be a cross-country style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon
