Thursdays. By September 2012, more room was needed, and the parsonage to Salem United Methodist Church was available. The pantry has been located in the house ever since. According to pantry chairperson Carolyn Peters, clients are often referred by word of mouth, the Manheim Central School District, or Bill Melone, community care pastor at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. Potential clients are asked to call the food pantry client coordinator at 717-664-1097 during office hours, which are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals wishing to volunteer may call the coordinator as well. people. That model of food distribution continued until the end of June. “In July they started coming in, but only one person per household, so not more than two or three clients in the building at a time, said Nittle. At that point, the pantry began offering choices again, but volunteers now get the food items and bring them to the clients. Masks are required for volunteers and clients. The pantry is under the umbrella of the Manheim Ministerium, and Nittle sends regular reports to the organization. “In July, we served 116 households or 338 individuals, she said. In addition to canned goods, the pantry offers fresh produce, meats, vegetables, milk, and eggs. Food items that are often needed by the pantry include peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta, and cereal. Nonperishable items may be placed in a box on the pantry porch. Fresh produce will also be accepted. More information and a list of current needs may be found at www.manheimcentral foodpantry.org/home.html.
