ore than five months after COVID-19 forced business and school closures throughout the state, members of the Manheim Central Food Pantry administration are still talking about the outpouring of donations they received. “Churches still brought food (even though they weren’t meeting),” recalled secretary Cathy Nittle. “People would drop food at the church, and someone from the church would bring it over.” Treasurer Nancy Auker recalled how area residents would back a car up to the garage at the pantry, located at 334 W. Gramby St., Manheim. “(They would) say, ‘We just went shopping’ and give us hundreds of dollars’ worth of food and say, ‘We know you’re going to need it.’” Auker also noted a special effort by the Manheim Central wrestling team a one-week “flash raise” in April, with all proceeds going to the pantry. The group raised more than $5,000, presenting Auker with a check for $6,400 on April 30. The local Grocery Outlet Bargain Market helps support
the pantry each July. This year, one shopper filled a cart with more than $200 worth of food just for the food pantry, Auker reported. Because of other donations from the Manheim community, the pantry was able to give away gift cards for several months. “We had people who had a couple dollars to donate from money they made by selling masks, (and we had) organizations that gave us thousands of dollars,” said Nittle. “Because they were so generous, we were able to purchase gift cards to hand out along with groceries to supplement (clients’) food.” Nittle recalled that the first pantry, known as the Manheim Ministerium Food Bank, was located in the basement of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim. “Its inception was in the mid-1980s, and volunteer Lionesses and volunteers from area churches would stock shelves and buy food if it was low,” she said. The volunteers packed bags of food for clients, and the church youth group helped bring the bags upstairs on Wednesday nights for the clients, who picked them up on See Food Pantry pg 7
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. HOPE International from pg 1
MONDAY NIGHT
Now, those clients, who Rutt said are already on “fragile footing,” have been teetering on the brink. “We have been trying to pull them off that proverbial cliff edge,” said Rutt. “We have gotten some results.” HOPE has instituted a three-phase plan called Rebuilding Dreams, which first provided food and water to clients who needed it to survive. The second phase involved a 60-day interest payment holiday. That crucial step cost HOPE about $500,000 a month, for a total expenditure of $1 million. The

final phase, which focuses on recapitalization of the tiny client businesses, will include at least $2 million more from HOPE. “These client businesses are starting to reopen, but they need capital to do that,” explained Rutt. To help raise that capital, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 20th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 6:30 a.m. A second round will be held the same day at 1 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club,

the aircraft carrier, but our clients in Burundi and Malawi and Rwanda are the life rafts being crushed by the waves,” he said. “For us … it’s a challenge, but compared to what the rest of the world is living with, it’s not (as big of a struggle).” Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, reported that the shutdowns around the world have resulted in crises we may not be able to imagine. “In South Asia, they announced at 8 p.m. that they would shut down at midnight,” he noted. “In four hours, more than 40 million migrant workers became refugees in their own country. Most lived between 300 and 1,600 miles away from where they were located at the time of the shutdown.” The good news is that many HOPE clients were prepared to face the financial hardships of the pandemic. “Pre-COVID, there was a study done by an independent third-party organization in Malawi, where we work,” said Rutt, who noted that the study focused on how many families in that country would have the funds they needed to survive three weeks in an emergency. That amount was around $19. “(The study found that) 37% of the population in general had the ability to survive,” said Rutt. However, when the researchers surveyed HOPE savings group members, they found that 81% had the means to survive. “It shows the difference that our savings groups are making,” said Rutt.

Those who wish to take part may email asmith@hopeinternational.org or call 717-464-3220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 11. Rutt has been impressed by the resilience of some of HOPE’s clients. “Irene in Paraguay got a small loan to start a hair salon,” he said, noting that countries like Paraguay do not offer stimulus packages. According to Rutt, Irene quickly reorganized to sewing face masks and selling them to the families in her community. “Irene provided a product (her neighbors) need and an income for her family,” said Rutt. “I thought that was a good example of pivoting to something she could do.” Rutt also told the story of Corine, a savings group member in Zimbabwe. He reported that Corine said, “When we saw that our savings group was suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly put our heads together and decided to start a bakery. Our plan was that it would enable us to continue to save, but now it has exceeded our expectations by allowing us to use the income to (care for) our families.” Rutt pointed out the differences between facing the pandemic in the United States and in other parts of the world. “We are

According to pantry chairperson Carolyn Peters, clients are often referred by word of mouth, the Manheim Central School District, or Bill Melone, community care pastor at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. Potential clients are asked to call the food pantry client coordinator at 717-664-1097 during office hours, which are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals wishing to volunteer may call the coordinator as well. At that point, the pantry began offering choices again, but volunteers now get the food items and bring them to the clients. Masks are required for volunteers and clients. The pantry is under the umbrella of the Manheim Ministerium, and Nittle sends regular reports to the organization. “In July, we served 116 households or 338 individuals, she said. In addition to canned goods, the pantry offers fresh produce, meats, vegetables, milk, and eggs. Food items that are often needed by the pantry include peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta, and cereal. Nonperishable items may be placed in a box on the pantry porch. Fresh produce will also be accepted. More information and a list of current needs may be found at www.manheimcentral foodpantry.org/home.html.

The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www. giantfoodstores.com/flushot or www.martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans
cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, readers may visit www.giantfood stores.com or www.martins foods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over six months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.
S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public
• Wash your hands often
• Maintain social distance — 6 feet
These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
