This year, the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair is moving to a new location. The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an

explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” See GTGH pg 5

Ketchum To Present Program Author and ultrarunner Penn Ketchum will present “Running, Recovery, and Mindfulness” at a book release hosted by the Parish Resource Center. The program will take place on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. Ketchum will reflect on Psalm 23, how to find mindfulness in daily life, and his journey in recovery. Attendees will receive a free copy of his new book, “Psalm 23 (in other words).” Ketchum is both the illustrator and author of this brand-new title. Ketchum started rethinking familiar prayers as a form of meditation during long training runs. As he found new words, he also found new insights. The book invites readers to look at this particular prayer differently. Ketchum’s journey with mindfulness and meditation was also dramatically affected by his involvement with a 12-step program in the 1980s, as he worked toward sobriety. Ketchum, owner of Penn Cinema, was the 2018 Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year. For tickets and more information, readers

The fair serves as a strong communitybuilding event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact

(yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. To learn more, readers may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

Printing from pg 1 The seventh Lancaster Printers Fair will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, in downtown Lancaster. The event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. To kick off the two-day event, members of the the .918 Club, which is organizing the fair, will show “Pressing On,” a film about the craft of letterpress printing, on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Candy Factory, located near the club’s Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There is no cost. The museum also will be open that evening with demonstrations and handson activities. For the second year, three exhibits will be on display that night. Prints by Rebecca Blossler will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, 335 N. Queen St., through October, and the guild will remain open until 9 p.m. on Sept. 20. Paper pulp sculptures by Angela Heaps will be in the windows at Madcap & Co., 310 N. Queen St., through Monday, Sept. 23. Prints by Martin Mazorra at Realm and Reason, 213 W. King St., will be on display until Monday, Sept. 30; the venue will be open until 10 p.m. on Sept. 20 and will host an after-party reception. On Sept. 21, the street fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the closed-totraffic 300 block of North Queen Street, where all nearby merchants will remain open for business. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region selling printing supplies and handmade products, and there will be printing demonstrations and food vendors. Activities for children will also be available. As a part of the street fair, the public can learn about H.N. Werkman, a printer from the Dutch province of Groningen during World War II, from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees can also try their hand at creating and printing a keepsake postcard. A salon-style group show of Lancaster printers will take place during the street fair, as well, and the exhibition will include work by Stephanie Hinish, Arthur Padelsky, Ben Williamson, Victoria Duggan, Brianna Maule, Gabby Shelly, Paula Mann, and Henry Gepfer. Returning this year will be a beer and burger garden presented by Voodoo Brewery and Cabalar Meat Co. A percentage of the sales will go to the .918 Club’s mission at the Heritage Press Education Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Other food available will be Auntie Anne’s pretzels, as well as ice cream by Splits and Giggles. Beverages will be available, as well. This year’s print-related vendors include AIGA Central PA, American Printing History Association Chesapeake Chapter, Base Press, Blue Letterpress, Boss Dog Press, Bowerbox Press, Boxcar Press, Cannon Ball Press, Conestoga Press, Crow Designs at The Workshop, FlexoCraft, Frederick Book Arts Center, Fresh Prints of Lancaster, Frontline Arts, Gingerly Press, Lucky Mfg. Co., Madcap & Co., Model Citizen Press, P22, Pressing Needs, Sincell Publishing Company, The Itinerant Printer, and Typothecary Letterpress. The event is free to the public. Any money raised will benefit the nonprofit .918 Club’s ongoing efforts to the education and preservation of letterpress printing. All-day parking passes will be available for a nominal fee at the North Queen Street Garage. For more information, readers may visit www.printersfair.com.

vegetation is natural to the area, with moss mixed in with the plants. A few of the plants surrounding the pond are artificial. “We have a fountain and a couple of fishermen there,” said Landis. “There’s a gazebo.” The garden opens in May and closes in October. During the regular season, the garden is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is also open for special occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day. It will also be open for Landis Homes Fellowship Day on Saturday, Sept. 14. Club member John Buckwalter has done the math to calculate how far the trains travel during a typical season. “They run approximately from Landis Homes to Des Moines, Iowa, or Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Tampa,

The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley. “You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.” “The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and

Fla.,” said Buckwalter. “(That’s) 1,023 miles per season.” Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill garden center stores and in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s museum store, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours. Readers may also use a printable ticket request available at www.rrmuseumpa.org. Tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania houses 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an education center, a library and archives, exhibits, and a museum store. Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.” Columbia is known to some as the jewel of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris of Pennsylvania.” Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, but the more he considered it, the more it stuck. “The way that Columbia is laid out makes it very walkable, and it has a lot of green spaces and parks,” said Barley. Barley said that the ColumbiaWrightsville bridge, which is one of the

stops on the tour, is perhaps the most architecturally interesting structure in the county. Construction on the bridge began in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The oldest building on the tour is Wright’s Ferry Mansion, built in 1738 and home to the famous Susanna Wright. Educated in England, Susanna helped to pioneer the oncethriving silk industry in Columbia and corresponded with intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin throughout her lifetime. The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every half-hour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to See Architectural Tour pg 8

The village will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 13th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6. The self-guided, family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. According to Landis, the 25-by-50-foot area that now holds the tracks and trains was a lot smaller when the club first laid it out in 2005. “(We started) with a couple of tracks and a minimal amount of money,” recalled Landis, who added that the club has expanded the layout significantly. “I have been here four years, and we have added many buildings and four trains in that time.” G-gauge trains, which can be used indoors as well, travel on approximately 300 feet of track. One of the diesels pulls a passenger car, and another pulls freight cars. The third pulls coal cars and a whimsical Lifesavers car. The trolley makes regular stops, but sometimes a club member replaces the trolley with a brightly colored ladybug that zips around the tracks. The trains whistle, and the bells ring. Buildings that were not constructed by club members are German made, and some are ceramic. The layout includes a miniature replica of the Lancaster train station, along with a tiny Harrisburg station. Kim Klinepeter of Mechanicsburg, daughter of club member Bruce Allison, is working on a replica of Hans Herr House for the garden. There is a mill at the east end of the layout, and a water tank is available to service the steam engine. Throughout the garden, most of the

Barons Gain Confidence in Win Over Donegal By Eric G. Stark

Beating Donegal, a state power and backyard and section nemesis, 4-1 Thursday, Sept. 5 will certainly build the Barons’ confidence. It was Donegal’s first section loss since 2013. Since the Indians joined Section Two five years ago, Manheim never beat them. After a slow start, the Barons settled in and played their game.

There is something exciting brewing between the lines on the Manheim Central field hockey turf. The Lady Barons, who lost only two players to graduation, return a strong nucleus of girls who have a wealth of varsity experience.

“The girls played with intensity and fire the entire game,” head coach Morgan Briggs said. “We started the game a little too frantic, but once we settled in the girls possessed the ball and played to our strengths.” Central scored at the 13:45 mark in the first half on a goal by senior forward Lily Sipel. She pushed the ball through a scramble in front of the net. They took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Barons got goals in the second half by Jenna Lutz, who scored 3:06 into the second half. They put the game away on scores by Hosler and Mattie Harzler. Sipel and Lexi Hosler added assists

for the Barons, who had seven corners and nine shots. Earlier in the week Manheim suffered a 4-1 loss to Twin Valley, the team that knocked them out of the postseason last year. But the game was closer than the final score indicated and serves as a great barometer. “Twin Valley was a good measuring stick for us to see where we are at against an extremely high caliber team,” said Briggs, whose team was deadlocked at 1-1 at intermission. “For a large portion of the game it was tied 1-1. The girls fought hard but we need to continue working on taking care of the ball and developing our

technical and tactical skills.” Briggs said the Barons executed their first corner perfectly and converted in the first half with a shot from the top of the circle by Lutz and deflected in from Hartzler. The coach said Manheim goalie Mikayla Regan had a few very athletic saves and was supported well by Monica Herman, Maddy Barbush, Cami Lehman and Hosler in the circle. The Barons hosted the Manheim Central Field Hockey Booster Club Tournament Saturday, Sept. 7. Central lost game one to Northern York, 3-1. Lehman scored the lone goal at the 10:01 mark of the second half. Sipel earned the assist. Manheim rebounded for a 6-0 win against New Oxford. Sipel gained

another assist, hooking up with Kylie Kroesen. Sipel added a late goal off an assist by Jenna Lutz. Hosler had the hot hand, collecting three goals. GOLF The Barons went 4-6 last week. Gage McCabe qualified for leagues shooting an 85 at Moccassin Run on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Dylan Groff (95) and Scott Westfield (93) continue to round out the top three on the team. Other individuals who have competed and scored for total include Wyatt Becker, Ryan Reed, and Austin Nelson. Manheim shot a 373, losing to Cocalico (318), Octorara (320) and Lampeter-Strasburg (327) in that Section Three clash. The Barons beat Northern Lebanon (415) and Elco (424). Becker rounded out the top four golfers with a 100.

Dylan Groff turned in a round of 103 to top the Barons’ scorecard and help them to a fourthplace finish in last Thursday’s Section Three match at Meadia Heights.

Manheim lost 13 guys from last season’s squad and brings back only three or four guys with varsity experience, but the impact of the 13 grads is still being felt. “The legacy that those guys left was that they were great teammates,” Brienze said. “They taught the younger players to play the game the right way. This year’s team might be our best group with guys being great teammates and a family.” Brienze said the concept to paying it forward with seniors mentoring underclassmen started years ago and it is ingrained in the players by the environment they grow up in. “I think a number of coaches at Manheim Central teach it and the community is so supportive,” he said. “You see what the successful programs do.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The Barons are picking up right where they left off last season, winning big soccer games. Manheim pulled out a tough, hard fought 1-0 triumph against Warwick on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The play went back-and-forth with both teams controlling different parts of the game. Isabella Wendler scored the only goal in the 34th minute and Mia Reed had an impressive game in goal. Her saves were key to making sure that one goal was enough, said Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus, whose squad was 9-1 in section-play. “Our other seniors, down the middle of the lineup, are Tori Fahnestock, Autumn Greiner, and MaKenna Copley and also played a great game, disrupting the dangerous Warwick attack and keeping control of the ball at important moments.” Stoltzfus only lost four seniors to graduation and two players to the PA Classics Development Academy this offseason. They return a large group from last year’s District Three title team that lost in the first round of the state playoffs and finished with the best record in program history, 20-4. The Barons won 3-1 Saturday, Sept. 7 against Palmyra. Central scored all three of its goals in the second half, erasing a 1-0 deficit.

Makenna Copley had the go-ahead goal. Wendler twice scored and played the ball through for a breakaway for Copley’s goal. FOOTBALL For the first time since 1983, Warwick defeated Manheim Central in football, earning a 37-7 victory Friday, Sept. 6. The loss also snapped Central’s 27-game regular season win streak. The Barons are in the middle of a tough stretch of games, winning close games against Susquehanna Township and Hempfield. Central coach Dave Hahn said no one is going to feel sorry for his club. He believes all three teams they’ve played so far will make the playoffs, as well as their next opponent, Wilson. “The wheels are not falling off,” he said. “We’ve played three really good teams. Central’s lone score came with 7:48 left in the second quarter when senior quarterback Evan Simon, rolling to his right, hooked up with Wes Herder on an 8-yard pass. Nate Reed connected on the extra point to cut Warwick’s lead to 12-7, but the Barons could get no closer. Hahn said the offense is still working out some kinks. “We haven’t found our identity on offense yet,” said Hahn, who mentioned he saw some positives from changes the team has made the last few weeks. “We’re struggling up front, but we are working to get a balance and made some changes. We’re seeing improvement. At some point it is going to click.” Looking ahead, the Bulldogs who have good size, run the ball well and are a physical team, Hahn said, adding that the Wilson quarterback has good size, can run the ball and fling it down field. Defensively, they are also strong. TENNIS The Barons beat Donegal, 4-3 Tuesday, Sept. 3. The match was as close as possible, Central coach Kurtis Funk said.

The Barons’ Chace Shifflett upends Warwick’s Colton Miller for a loss during Manheim’s 37-7, nonleague loss in Lititz last Friday.

“We won 2 close doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2. Courtney Weaver has been playing great tennis for us at number two singles. She won in straight sets.” The whole match came down to Maddie Moyer at number three singles. She broke her racket strings in warm ups and had to deal with playing with a new racket. She lost the first set but came back and won the match 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker. “She showed a lot of heart to stay in that match and sealed the win for our team,” Funk said. “We lost two matches 4-3 in similar fashion this year so it was great to get one, especially in our section. Donegal played great. The match could have gone either way, but we were fortunate to have it go our way.” Manheim also notched a 5-1 victory over Ephrata on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Eliana Shenk, at No.1 singles won 6-1, 6-3. Weaver, at No 2 singles, won 6-2, 6-4 and Moyer, playing No. 3, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph. Shenk and Weaver nailed down an 8-1 win as the Barons’ top doubles unit. Moyer and Cassie Ginder won 9-7. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The Barons cruised to 3-0 victories

against Solanco (25-10, 25014, 25-9) and Lebanon. Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said the key to the win was Central’s serving. They were very aggressive serving. “Our serving was awesome,” he said. “We controlled and ran our system and they (Solanco) could not get into their offense.” Illustrating how strong the serving was, Manheim had three girls with five or more aces. Setter Grace Stoltzfus finished with seven aces. Emma Moyer, the right side hitter, collected six and Kalie Zimmerman, outside hitter, added five. A fourth player, Victoria “Tori” Henderson, posted four aces. Henderson registered nine kills and Zimmerman four kills. Stoltzfus, Moyer and Elena Kready each had three kills. “It’s what a coach wants to see in a first match,” said Moyer, whose team lost three seniors from last season. Henderson Kready and Zimmerman are stepping up in the leadership role this season, Moyer said. Central breezed past Lebanon 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14. Henderson posted four aces and six kills. Moyer had two blocks and Stoltzfus had five digs and

Moyer, in his first season with the Barons after previously coaching Manheim Christian and at the Nook, is impressed with how eager the Manheim players are to learn. “They are so eager to be better players,” he said. BOYS’ SOCCER Central beat Cedar Crest 4-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Tyler Snavely scored twice for the Barons. Logan Whitehouse had a corner goal off an assist from Snavely to get the scoring started. Quintin Rohrer had the second goal. Rohrer and Nate Reed also had assists. Freshman Dillon Smith had six saves and has impressed his coach, Rod Brienze. “We’re really happy with him,” he said. “He’s very coachable.” The Barons rode the momentum to a 5-0 win against Palmyra Saturday, Sept. 7.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Marietta Community House will host “An Evening in the Studio,” which will showcase both of its historic buildings at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. This is an extra special year for the annual dinner and benefit auction, as the Marietta Community House is celebrating its 100th anniversary. “The auction is always a really fun night, and we’d love to have anyone and everyone show up,” said Katherine Leaman, Marietta Community House president. “We have regained the building that saw the birth of the Susquehanna Stage Company and are excited to showcase both the studio and the house during the auction,” stated Leaman. Susquehanna Stage Company relocated to its new space at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, earlier in 2019. Leaman said that future possibilities for the space formerly occupied by the community theater group, which is now being called the studio, are currently being explored and discussed by board members. Historically, the space functioned as a gymnasium. “We are looking for something that will benefit the community as a whole and are open to all possibilities,” remarked Leaman. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served in the studio beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Silent auction items will be available for attendees to bid on, and live jazz music will be performed by the Tom Pontz Trio. At 6:30 p.m., dinner and dessert will be served in the house. Afterward, auctioneer Karl Boltz will officiate the live auction party. Highlighted items will include two tickets to a performance of “Hamilton” in Philadelphia; a Mediterranean dinner for six; a stay at a condominium in Pompano Beach, Fla.; and a golf outing for four at the Harrisburg Country Club. Original artwork from local artists including David Haneman and Suzanne Satterfield will also be up for bids. Proceeds from the dinner and auction will benefit the maintenance and ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House. Events hosted earlier this year by the Marietta Community House included a thank-you cocktail party for the Marietta volunteer organizations in April and a free children’s festival in June, as well as the ongoing and ever-popular Marietta Town Talks organized by Margie Landis. Leaman noted that as the Marietta Community House continues in its 100th year of service to the community, the mission of its board members and volunteers remains “to promote the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical welfare of men, women and children of Marietta.” See “The Studio” pg 15
