When was the last time you went to a drive-in movie? You can experience a taste of that nostalgia in Manheim at the Under the Stars Community Night. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard behind the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St.

Proceeds from the Paint and Sip night will go toward operating expenses of the library. Wagner, who started her job at the library

When she’s not at her day job as community relations coordinator for Manheim Community Library, Jes Wagner loves to get creative. Now she’s taking her passion for art and using it to raise funds for the library.

Families are invited to Ruhl’s Church on Saturday, Sept. 24, for a free Carnival Night. The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.“Weare going to have six stations set up,” said Kris Gray, church member and an organizer of the event. “Each one will have a fun activity and a faith lesson.” People will be invited to try a fishing game, See Carnival pg 4

“We were thinking of fundraising ideas, because the library is always looking for support, and this seemed like a fun way to raise funds,” Wagner noted. “I’m planning on guiding people through the art project, with step-by-step instruction.”

This is no ordinary drive-in movie, however. You’ll have to use your imagination and your creativity. Children are invited to make box cars at the event to sit in while enjoying the movie, said Heather Lindsey, owner and artist of Creative Inspirationz Gallery, who is organizing the event with Brick House manager Christa Neville and owner Dave Reist. “Luca” will be

A Paint and Sip fundraiser for Manheim Community Library will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Glasshouse Wineworks, 8 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The evening will feature the opportunity for each participant to make a wall-worthy painting while enjoying snacks and a glass of wine.

earlier this summer, said she has plans for other fundraising events throughout the coming year.

Wagner has created a design of marigolds springing from the pages of an open book, and each participant will create an 8-by-10-inch canvas of the painting. “I think it’s going to be really neat to work with everyone as they complete this project,” she stated. Although this will be Wagner’s first time leading a guided painting session for the public, she plans to do a practice run at a library staff meeting later this month.“I’ve been doing art my whole life,” Wagner stated, noting that she especially enjoys painting, drawing and coffee art, where she paints with coffee. “Art is an outlet for me. It’s going to be such a fun night to be able to bring together two things I love - art and the library.”

She noted that she’s grateful to Glasshouse Wineworks for hosting the event, and she emphasized that the event will not only raise funds for the library but will also encourage people to enjoy a local small business. Glasshouse Wineworks will have its full bar open for patrons to purchase additional drinks during the event if they choose to.

GOAL Project will present a workshop, “Open My Eyes That I May See,” on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 8:45 a.m. to noon at Elizabethtown Grace Church, 305 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown.

Rissler has been working to train Honor since he came to live with the Rissler family at 13 weeks of age. He was housebroken within about three weeks of arrival. Basic commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’,” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training.

When you attend the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, not only will you enjoy a day of family fun, but you’ll also be giving a nod to the region’s history.“Many may not know, but ‘pig iron’ refers to the cast-iron ingots produced by the Marietta iron furnaces in the 19th century,” explained Marcus Snow, president of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, which is hosting the event. “Molten iron was poured into ingot molds, which branched off of a central vein of iron. The ingots looked like little piglets feeding off of the mother pig, and so the nickname ‘pig iron’ took hold. The early iron industry built Marietta, and the fest honors that

For his part, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train. He’s so intelligent,” said Rissler, who added that as a dog lover, she has been excited to learn about high-reward treats and scatter training techniques, which she can now use with other dogs.Readers who would like to learn more may visit http://padcentral .org or search for “Phoenix Assistance Dogs” on Facebook.

Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of support.”

A move was needed to accommodate the fest’s space needs.”

The move will not dampen the event’s spirit or its focus on history, Snow said. “Even though we are separated from the furnace ruins, Rivertownes will provide a display of the furnace area along with historic photos from old Marietta,” he stated. “The Vesta building and the ruins will be open for tours throughout the day, and visitors are encouraged to visit the ruins.”

Snow encourages everyone to come out for the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, noting that it promises to be a fun and memorable day. “(It’s an)

The girls’ soccer team tweaked the advice of Taylor Swift and ‘shook it off,’ bouncing back from a 3-2 season opening loss to Warwick on August 31st to post a 2-1 win over Donegal on September 2nd. The Lady Barons made it two straight wins by knocking off Lampeter-Strasburg by a 4-3 final on the 7th.

Laci Nelson has earned all three victories in the cage but has zero saves to show for her work.

The Lady Baron tennis team is into collecting and their preferred collectable is wins. Central has picked up five in their first five matches putting them at 5-0 with roughly three weeks remaining in the season. Manheim kicked off the season on August 22nd

with a 4-1 win over McCaskey and followed with a 7-0 sweep of Warwick on the 24th. The Lady Barons slipped by Ephrata in a 3-2 final on the 29th before closing out August with a 5-2 win over Central York. Central finished their early season Section One run with a 6-1 win over Conestoga Valley on Sept 2nd.

Immaculata,

The start of a new school year brings with it a new season of high school sports. For the Manheim Central football team that means a typical 2-0 start with the wins coming over West Chester East and Immaculata (New Jersey). The record may look familiar, as does the 56-7 shellacking of West Chester East to open the season on August 26, but Manheim’s narrow 44-43 escape of Immaculata was not familiar or enjoyable for those at Rettew Stadium.

The Central golf team sits at 9-6 with three matches under their 2022 belt. The Barons opened with a 3-2 mark at Iron Valley on August 18th and followed with a 4-1 mark at Honeybrook on the 23rd. An August 30th trip to Pine Meadows led to a 2-3 mark and the 9-6 overall record.Cayden Schwebel carded a 41 in the rain shortened match

The field hockey team has taken the high-powered offense approach to their first few games, posting a 3-0 start with a gawdy 16-1 scoring edge. Exactly half of those goals came in the 8-0 shutout of Conrad Weiser on August 29th. Cali Inthavongsa picked up three of her five goals in that season opening romp and joined the fun of a 4-0 win over ELCO on the 31st with a single score. Loghan Shelly finished off the scoring with the final goal in the Weiser blowout.

The girls’ volleyball team is doing the sporting version of the two-step to start their 2022 season. The Lady Barons posted wins over Lebanon and Conrad Weiser in their first two outings only to follow with two straight losses, bowing to Twin Valley and Elizabethtown.Manheimopened the season on August 30th with wins of 25-4, 25-18 and 25-14 to sweep Lebanon. Another sweep came one day later by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 2511 over Conrad Weiser.

Abigail Reed paced the offense, scoring four goals and setting up one more. Mikayla Beck chipped in with one goal and two assists. Kaylee Neff, Kyla Benner, and Aubrey Myers rounded out the goal scorers with Laura Kahler, Lizzie Voegele and Abby Sweeney dishing out one assist each. Lexi Wettig was the winning keeper in all three affairs totaling 24 saves.
