Echo Valley Art Auction Will Showcase Local Works BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Lifecycles team reaches the finish line in Delaware.
The Lifecycles team was (back, from left) Al Vega, Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Mike Wise, Michelle Deller (front), Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser.

he motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling. “It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country
T
ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’ I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they also encountered unforgettable sights along the route.
“A big highlight was Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “We rode through Beartooth Highway. … We rode 27 miles uphill. It was a crystal-clear day, and you could see for miles. It was just beautiful.” The participants had concerns ahead of time that they’d all make it up the incline - and then concerns about coming down through hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. Despite the challenges, the riders experienced no major health concerns or problems only some muscle aches, blisters and irritated asthma. Joining Wise on the trip were
youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago.

Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. To remedy the issue, the members host an annual art auction not only to clean out their studios, but also to provide the public with access to affordable, quality art. This year’s Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them

service at 9 a.m. “All of the township churches have a community service, which will run until 10 a.m.,” Williams stated. Sunday’s tractor parade will begin at noon. A highlight of this year’s event will be hayrides to a blacksmith shop in Bainbridge, where a blacksmith dressed in period clothing will provide demonstrations. The shop, located at 15 S. Second St., had been privately owned when it went up for sale in 2019. “The Bainbridge Town-
ship supervisors decided to buy it and save it for future generations to enjoy,” Williams explained, noting that the building dates to 1810 and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bainbridge. “The township wanted to be good stewards of our history. What a rare gem we have in our little town, and we wanted to let a new generation see it and appreciate it.” Will Smith, whose greatgreat-grandfather was a See Field Days pg 3

Dance Around During A Day Of Music Since 1962, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) has aimed to enrich the quality of life in Lancaster County by providing cultural programming at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. LPAF accomplishes this goal through its Summer Music Series and Labor Day weekend Art Festival. To thank the community and offer another opportunity to enjoy live entertainment outside, LPAF will host a onetime Day of Music event on Saturday, Sept. 18. It will take place at Long’s Park and will feature both national and local acts. The venue will open at 2 p.m., and performances will begin at about 2:45 p.m. Performers will include national acts Shannon McNally, The National Reserve, and Big Sam’s Funky Nation, as well as local musicians The Wild Hymns, Tractor Jerry & The Mud Bucket, and Tuck Ryan Band. These artists will
introduce the public to a diverse array of musical genres, including soul, funk, country, and Americana. David Wauls, president of LPAF, noted that the event will give people a chance to hear familiar performers and to get acquainted with ones they hadn’t previously heard of. “Long’s Park has such a long standing tradition with providing qualified, curated, live entertainment for the community,” said Day of Music Chair Tony Kirchner. “ What I’m probably most excited about is the idea of constant flow of music featuring national artists but also some regional artists as well. The goal was to stretch through genres, stretch through boundaries, but also stay true to ... what Long’s Park traditionally programs.” Day of Music will be a free event, but donations are encouraged. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, and a beer

Field Days from pg 2 pressed on site will also be available. The theme for this year’s event is “Tobacco and Antique Household Items,” Williams said. Antique hitand-miss engines, tractors and farm machinery will be on display, and a roof shingle-making machine will provide demonstrations. “We will also have a Civil War re-enactment camp and a Revolutionary War re-enactment camp,” Williams stated. Proceeds from the Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days will be used to fund next year’s event, Williams explained, adding that money will be raised through donations at the event as well as the auction. He encouraged everyone to come out for a fun day that celebrates the town’s history.
“Parking is free, entry is free, the hayrides are free and the entertainment is free,” he stated. “There is so much to see and do.” For more information, search for “Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

Williams noted that the township supervisors hope to continue to use the blacksmith building for school group visits and other special events. Additional activities at the Field Days event will include hayrides to a pumpkin patch, barrel train rides for children, crafters, vendors and lots of food. A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held on Saturday. “All throughout the event, we’re going to have bluegrass music, and we have at least a dozen food stands,” Williams remarked. “They are run by local nonprofit groups like churches, the Boy Scouts and the Lions Club.” Apple cider

about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.” Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for
those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School, will be working with the kids on the project,” Shane said, noting that the project will keep children occupied while parents browse the artwork. The event will also include food for purchase. Echo Valley is a group of pro-
fessional artists who meet regularly and exhibit art together, Shane said. “We currently have 23 members, and our membership is limited to 25,” she stated. “We have a wide range of artists in our group. Our youngest member is in her 20s, and our oldest is in his 90s.” Members include Ann DeLaurentis, Rob Evans, Becky Blosser, Dick Whitson, Brant Schuller and Susan Gottlieb. The group holds the auction not only to get art into the hands of more people, but also to support young artists in the county. Proceeds will support local youth art exhibits and will fund events such as bus trips to major
museums for local students. Shane said the event is a casual, low-key way to enjoy art. “There’s no pressure,” she explained. “You can just come to look around, eat lunch and talk with the artists. We love talking to people about our art.” The event is also a way to showcase original art that’s affordable, she said, adding, “ We started this event because we believe as artists that original art enhances your life and makes your life better.” For more information on the Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction, visit www.echovalley artgroup.com.

You’re Invited To Sing “Messiah”
Bicycles from pg 1 The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding, “We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another cross-country bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for

years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them, and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

When Handel composed “Messiah” in the 1740s, he wanted it to be performed as a concert, said Tom Berdos, director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. With that desire in mind, Berdos is inviting singers in the Mount Joy area to join him for a performance of the piece in December. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, 1215 E. Main St., beginning on Oct. 6. “This is a new and unique opportunity for this community,” said Berdos, who has been conducting “Messiah” for about 20 years at other locations. “I do it for the glory of God, and it gives people the opportunity to sing this wonderful

opportunity to make friends and connect with others in the community, he noted, adding, “I’ve had singers tell me it’s a life-changing experience to participate. They work so hard as a team, and we really bond.” Berdos emphasized the choir consists of people of all faiths, and it includes a range of ages and backgrounds. “We have at least three teenagers and at least three people who are in their 80s, so it’s a multigenerational experience,” he said. “I would love to have people who were members of their church choir, but maybe their church doesn’t have a choir anymore.” Berdos has been the music director at Chiques UMC since June, where his wife, Deborah, is the organist. She will accompany rehearsals and sing soprano in the concert. Performing “Messiah” is an opportunity to take on a

difficult piece of music, and it’s an expression of faith, Berdos said. “It’s a worship experience to conduct this piece and to sing it,” he remarked. “How can you participate with this and not feel that you’re giving to the Lord?” Tickets for the concert will go on sale to the public on Monday, Nov. 1. Anyone who interested in singing in the concert should email Berdos at ccmusic.tom@gmail.com for more information.

He noted that the church can accommodate up to 90 singers and that people have returned year after year to perform the piece. In 2018, he held the concert in the metro New York area of New Jersey, and a group from there will Zoom in for rehearsals and perform live at the December concert. Berdos said he does not hold auditions for the performance, but rather leaves it up to people to know their voice part and capabilities. “Some people come to the first or second rehearsal and think, ‘I’m not sure I can do this,’ but I encourage them to keep coming back,” he stated. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment when it all comes together.” The rehearsals are also an

Barons’ Boys’ Soccer Off to a Solid Start
BY ERIC G. STARK
Rod Brenize admits it is too early to say how good his Manheim Central boys’ soccer team will be; he doesn’t know what he has yet. Well, after two games, he is starting to get a clearer picture. He can see his squad is resilient and can put the ball in the net. In two games, the Barons are 2-0 and have scored six goals, while yielding three. They started the season with a comefrom-behind 2-1 victory over Donegal on Sept. 3. The Barons trailed 1-0 late into the second half before Connor Caterbone scored off a slot ball from Brayden Dombach in the 67th minute. Matt Echegoyen broke the 1-1 tie, taking a pass from Dombach on the wing. Echegoyen, on a semi-fast break got behind the defensive line and beat the keeper in the 72nd minute. Losing in a noon game on Labor Day weekend, it would have been easy for Brenize’s inexperienced team to lower their heads. But instead, they fought back. “I was pleased with the way we played,” he said. “We were down 1-0. We came back to score two goals in the final 15 minutes to win. I was most pleased by that, that we didn’t give up.” The Barons beat Garden Spot 4-2 at home on Sept. 7. Manheim scored first, getting a goal by Luke Redcay eight minutes into the game. Redcay netted a
second goal at the 57-minute mark. Dombach also added two goals, both in the second half (46:00 and 71:00 into the contest). Gabe Redcay, Luke’s brother, notched two assists and Aiden Beck and Caterbone also assisted. TENNIS In their first win in several years over Conestoga Valley, the Lady Barons defeated the Buckskins 6-1 on Sept. 3. “It was a great win for us,” Manheim coach Kurtis Funk said. “CV has beat us a bunch of years in a row, so it was nice to finally get one. Our doubles were really key because we got off to an early 3-0 lead. That really takes the pressure off of singles. I thought my 2-4 singles players really played nice, consistent matches as well, but it really started with doubles for us.” The doubles were led by No. 1 team of Gabriella Wettig and Brianna Mylin with an 8-2 win. Holly Miller and Samantha Williams won at No. 2 8-4 and Sydney Peters and Kami Groff teamed for an 8-4 victory. Mylin and Miller also won in singles. Elizabethtown beat Central 4-3 on Sept. 6. Central led 3-0 after the doubles matches with Wettig and Mylin winning, 9-7. Miller and Williams won 9-7 and Peters and Groff won 8-4. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Barons won their season-opener in a 4-3 comefrom-behind overtime thriller
in New Holland Sept. 7. Hannah Adair scored the game-winner three minutes into the second 10-minute overtime, racing up to kick the ball past the kicking attempt by Garden Spot goalie Kylie Weinhold from about 25 yards out. Weinhold came charging out of net on numerous occasions and the Barons finally got one by her. “No one anticipates quite like Hannah does,” Baron’s coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “She saw that ball about to be kicked and she was gone. She knew where it was going, and she knew she was going to get to that ball. That’s something she does so well for us.” The Barons, who dominated at times, found themselves trailing behind the quick-strike offense of the Spartans. Spot led 1-0 at halftime. Manheim got on the scoreboard with 24:30 left in the game when Abbie Reed took a pass from Summer Bates and sent a slow roller past the diving attempt of Weinhold into the right corner of the goal. Less than five minutes later, Bates returned the favor, setting up Reed, who sent a shot high above the out-stretched hands of Weinhold, just below the cross bar. Reed from Adair put the Barons on top 3-1, but Spot scored two quick goals to even the score and send the contest into OT. Adair, from a Courtney Smith pass, took care of business for the Barons’ win.
VOLLEYBALL Manheim started the season by beating Twin Valley in a five-game match on Sept. 3 (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13). Madison Knier led the Barons with 13 kills and Grace Stoltzfus dished out 29 assists and added four aces. Raegan Nissley had five blocks and Emma Damon added 13 digs. Though they didn’t win their next match, Central played three competitive games against Elizabethtown, 25-13, 25-22, 25-17. Nissley was strong at the net with seven kills. Stoltzfus was the floor general with 11 assists and two aces. Knier posted four blocks and Damon and Rachel Nolt each had 11 digs. “It was awesome to watch,” Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said. “E-town has some really hard hitters, and we were picking it up and we had several blocks on them.” CROSS COUNTRY The Lady Barons won their season-opener, beating Elco 22-34 and Cocalico (the Eagles did not field enough players for a team score). Julianna Lindberg paced the Barons with a time of 23:00, good for second overall. Jenna Moffett (23:07), Reagan Ibach (23:47) and Alaina Bruckhart (24:18) placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Madelynn Hoffman followed in ninth, posting 25:15. The boys lost to Cocalico in a
highly contested meet, 22-24. Elco edged the Barons 26-30. Senior Michael Greenwald placed first overall, running 18:35. Carter Bruckhart (20:05) and Cameron Evans (20:07) were fifth and sixth, respectively. GOLF The Barons posted a score of 419 but lost a Section Two match at Media Heights to Elizabethtown (365), Solanco (365), Garden Spot (385) and Conestoga Valley (400). The best Manheim finishers were Cayden Schwebel (101) and Zach Benner (105). FOOTBALL The Barons are off to a 2-0 start. They have outscored their opponents 48-7 in two
games. On Sept. 3 Manheim shutout Hempfield 14-0 at Rettew Field. Central took a 6-0 lead on linebacker Wyatt Kupres’ 54yard interception. The Barons, who missed the extra point, took a 6-0 lead into halftime. Senior quarterback Judd Novak had a 6-yard scamper to pay dirt and Logan Hostetter caught a two-point conversion from Novak to make it 14-0 in the third quarter. Defensively, the Barons held the Knights to 229 yards of offense. After two games, Rocco Daugherty, and Landon Watson each had 1.5 sacks, Watt had 2.5 sacks, Tyler Fahnestock added two sacks. Watt has 17 tackles and Fahnestok 13.
