A Celebration Of Gratitude BY ANN MEAD ASH

More than five months after COVID-19 forced business and school closures throughout the state, members of the Manheim Central Food Pantry administration are still talking about the outpouring of donations they received. “Churches still brought food (even though they weren’t meeting),” recalled secretary Cathy Nittle. “People would drop food at the church, and someone from the church would bring it over.” Treasurer Nancy Auker recalled how area residents would back a car up to the garage at the pantry, located at 334 W. Gramby St., Manheim. “(They would) say, ‘We just went shopping’ and give us hundreds of dollars’ worth of food and say, ‘We know you’re going to need it.’” Auker also noted a special effort by the Manheim Central wrestling team a one-week “flash raise” in April, with all proceeds going to the pantry. The group raised more than $5,000, presenting Auker with a check for $6,400 on April 30. The local Grocery Outlet

Bargain Market helps support the pantry each July. This year, one shopper filled a cart with more than $200 worth of food just for the food pantry, Auker reported. Because of other donations from the Manheim community, the pantry was able to give away gift cards for several months. “We had people who had a couple dollars to donate from money they made by selling masks, (and we had) organizations that gave us thousands of dollars,” said Nittle. “Because they were so generous, we were able to purchase gift cards to hand out along with groceries to supplement (clients’) food.” Nittle recalled that the first pantry, known as the Manheim Ministerium Food Bank, was located in the basement of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim. “Its inception was in the mid-1980s, and volunteer Lionesses and volunteers from area churches would stock shelves and buy food if it was low,” she said. The volunteers packed bags of food for clients, and the church youth group helped bring

The fundraiser for the nursing facility will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the church, located at 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata. Each meal, at a cost of $11, will include slow-roasted pulled pork with barbecue sauce, a baked potato and butter, a dinner roll, applesauce See Pork Barbecue pg 4

Free Link To Connect Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Girls on the Run - Lancaster, a youth development program, will host a free virtual forum and film, “Angst,” on Oct. 8, 9, and 10.

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancaster-area GOTR members, the organization

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.

Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotrlancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. Haunted Attraction Now Open Field of Screams, 191 College Ave., Mountville, began its 2020 season on Sept. 11. The spooky attraction will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, including Halloween night, through the second weekend in November. Events open at 6 p.m., with the exception of Saturdays in October when the site opens at 5 p.m. This year, the Haunted Hayride path has been modified to include a new attraction, The Chop Shop. Additionally, the S.H.A.D.E. Cryogenic Facility that was introduced last season has been upgraded for 2020. The Nocturnal Wasteland attraction has new effects, and new scenes have been added to the Den of Darkness and the Frightmare Asylum. Field of Screams features four haunted attractions with new scares in place for 2020. Due to COVID-19, a plan has been put in place so that they will operate safely. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Dunkard Brethren Church Home, but Mount Hope accepts senior applicants regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of their nursing care. As part of an effort to serve seniors with lower incomes, Grace Point Church of the Nazarene purchased the Dunkard Brethren Church Home at 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, in 2007. The building soon was filled with seniors and disabled older adults who needed nursing care. Today, as it was in past years, Mount Hope continues with this foundational mission. “The mission of being able to provide affordable, quality nursing care to those families who have loved ones in need and find themselves on lower fixed incomes is something only made possible through the support and generosity of our community,” Wilson said. “It takes an entire community of people, interacting together with Mount Hope, to ensure that this unique nursing care service continues for our aging population.” For more information, readers may call 717-665-6365 or visit www.mthope nazarene.org.

the bags upstairs on Wednesday nights for the clients, who picked them up on Thursdays. By September 2012, more room was needed, and the parsonage to Salem United Methodist Church was available. The pantry has been located in the house ever since. According to pantry chairperson Carolyn Peters, clients are often referred by word of mouth, the Manheim Central School District, or Bill Melone, community care pastor at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. Potential clients are asked to call the food pantry client coordinator at 717-664-1097 during office hours, which are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals wishing to volunteer

may call the coordinator as well. The pantry is open specified Mondays and Thursdays for clients who are registered and have been assigned a day to visit. “The first month or two after the virus hit, we would pack for each family by size,” recalled Auker. “(Clients) would come to the door, and we would register them and give them whatever we had packed for that number of people.” That model of food distribution continued until the end of June. “In July they started coming in, but only one person per household, so not more than two or three clients in the building at a time,” said Nittle. At that point, the pantry began offering choices again, but volunteers now get the food items and bring

them to the clients. Masks are required for volunteers and clients. The pantry is under the umbrella of the Manheim Ministerium, and Nittle sends regular reports to the organization. “In July, we served 116 households or 338 individuals,” she said. In addition to canned goods, the pantry offers fresh produce, meats, vegetables, milk, and eggs. Food items that are often needed by the pantry include peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta, and cereal. Nonperishable items may be placed in a box on the pantry porch. Fresh produce will also be accepted. More information and a list of current needs may be found at www.manheimcentralfood pantry.org/home.html.

Due to restrictions placed on in-person events during the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Pennsylvania Leadership Conference to be held on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, will proceed as a virtual conference. The conference will be held on multiple virtual platforms allowing for a complete agenda of speakers, conversations, and issue panels. The complete conference agenda will originate live from the ballroom at the Radisson Penn Harris Convention Center in Camp Hill and will feature as speakers state Sen. Doug Mastriano, Kelly Ann Pidgeon from Armed and Feminine, Cory DeAngelis of the Reason Foundation, former Sen. Rick Santorum, John Fund of National Review, Rep. Scott Perry, and Lawrence Tabas, Republican Party of Pennsylvania chairman. Additional details on the conference are available by visiting www.paleadership conference.org.

41ST ANNUAL

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition -

Giant To Take Part In Hunger Action Month with hunger. Throughout September, the Giant Company is inviting customers to share a picture of their family connecting over a meal on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. For each picture shared with #ForTodaysTable and #GIANT, the Giant Company will donate 100 meals to neighbors in need, with a goal of donating 1 million meals through Feeding America by the end of September. More details and officials rules are available at www.giantfood stores.com/1for100. The Giant Company will also donate a total of $500,000 to 20 local food banks and pantries across four states to provide funding to address the increased need. Recipient food banks include Blair County Community Action Program, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,

Chester County Food Bank, Downtown Daily Bread, Dubois Food Pantry, Family & Community Services of Delaware Co., Helping Harvest Food Bank, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, Loaves and Fishes, Manna on Main Street, Maryland Food Bank, New Hope Ministries, Perry County Food Bank, Philabundance, Project Share, Second Harvest, Sharing Excess, Water Street Mission and York County Food Bank. Another way customers can partner with the Giant Company to support local food banks during Hunger Action Month is to take part in the company’s bi-annual in-store signature Bag Hunger campaign. Throughout September, customers can donate at the registers across all Giant and Martin’s stores. Members of Choice Rewards can also donate points to benefit their

local food bank. Beginning in September and continuing through early 2021, the Giant Company’s reusable bag program is focused on hunger. With each bag retailing for 99 cents, 50 cents from the sale of each goes to local food bank partners. Through Thursday, Sept. 24, whenever customers buy $20 in participating products from a variety of food manufacturers, $5 will be donated on their behalf to Feeding America. Readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com to learn more about the Giant Company’s ongoing hunger relief efforts, which include its signature Meat the Needs program, which has donated more than 10 million pounds of meat that would otherwise have gone unsold to food banks.

Skin Care Tips Posted As people enjoy the great outdoors, it is important to remember that the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays are still strong in September. That means sunburn and skin damage are as big a risk as ever. Patient First physicians have offered a few suggestions to help people keep their skin healthy. Sunscreen should always be used, even when the sky is cloudy, and it should be reapplied every two hours. Wide-brimmed hats can be worn to help protect the ears and neck from the sun. To stay hydrated, individuals should drink water throughout the day. Appropriate light-weight clothing should be worn, along with

sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) rays. People should take advantage of shade whenever possible. The sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Strenuous outdoor activity should be avoided in the heat. Frequent breaks in a cool place should be taken. All Patient First Medical Centers are open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day of the year. COVID-19 testing also continues at designated Patient First locations. Updates about testing sites, instructions about how to make an appointment, and other information are available at www.patientfirst.com/covid -19-testing.

and Aaron’s Acres’ social media accounts every other week starting in September and continuing through the beginning of December. The school year program will be reassessed prior to the new year to determine if Aaron’s Acres will continue

virtual programming or move forward with in-person programming starting in January. Readers may contact Elaine Burnett at 717-9176101, ext. 103, or elaine burnett@aaronsacres.org for more information about the school year program.
