Mount Hope To Host Harvest Festival, Pig Roast, And Auction How has Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, maintained its positive reputation in the community for so many years? Director of advancement Kris Wilson is convinced that one of the keys to MHNRC’s positive reputation is the quality team members. “They are our greatest asset,” remarked Wilson. “Our staff continue to provide residents with top-level care and often see their work as a calling rather than a job. We aspire to have Mount Hope be a place to belong, rather than just a place to work.” At its 50th anniversary celebration in June, MHNRC received citations of excellence in care and mission from both the Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives. “Our legacy is one where no senior goes unserved,” stated Wilson.

“(MHNRC) fills a unique niche, providing skilled long-term care and rehabilitation services. Seniors in the county, as well as the broader community, are welcome regardless of financial status.” According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid or have very limited funds to pay for the cost of care, and in 2018 MHNRC gave more than $1.2 million in charitable care. Recently, a brother and sister searching for care for their mother commented, “From the moment we walked in the door (at MHNRC), we were, and still are, welcomed by kind, compassionate people. We have an overwhelming sense of relief knowing our mother is being truly cared for in an atmosphere of ‘home.’” Yet again this year MHNRC was named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Old-Fashioned Field Days To Highlight Dairy By Chelsea Peifer

The 22nd annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Admission and parking will be free. Antique tractors, hit-andmiss engines, model engines, and other items will be on display for the ever-popular machinery exhibits. Each year, organizers select a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the event, and this year’s theme will be dairy-related items. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be set up on both days. A variety of live demonstrations will include rope making, apple cider See Field Days pg 3

Organizers of Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, including (front, from left) Earl Fuhrman, Tonya Bernhard, Sandy Baker, Kevin Baker, (back) Cameron Reigle, Darl Williams, Ron Bernhard, and Dori Hammer, invite the public to take part in the two-day event set to take place on Sept. 21 and 22 at Conoy Park in Bainbridge.

Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim will host its annual Harvest Festival, Pig Roast, and Auction on Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Displaying some of the gift baskets that will be part of the auction are (back, from left) director of advancement Kris Wilson, volunteer Mary Stinchcomb, chaplain and life enrichment director Jim Day, certified nursing assistant Maria Zuniga, and (front) residents Jay Eby, Nancy Wildsmith, and Robert Lehman.

Local Girl Scouts Serve In St. Croix By Chelsea Peifer

Hurricane Maria ravaged the United States Virgin Island of St. Croix in September 2017, and as anyone who has experienced major storms, floods, and hurricanes knows, the relief efforts usually last for months and years after the initial damage has occurred. That meant that when nine members of Manheim Girl Scout Troop 70101 and five adult chaperones headed to St. Croix for a week in June, there was still plenty of work to be done. The trip happened as a result of troop leader Gayle Ryan, who said that a visiting priest came to her church and talked about the needs of people in

Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors from the Troop 70101 in Manheim traveled to the island of St. Croix in June to assist with hurricane relief efforts, including preparing and serving food in soup kitchens and painting houses. Manheim Central School District is offering programs to prepare children for kindergarten. The district has an Early Head Start class for children from birth to age 3, a prekindergarten class for 4-yearolds, and Baron Babies Playful Learning workshops for babies and toddlers. Additionally, Manheim Central has recently partnered with STEM Starts Now to help parents teach early science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts to children starting as babies. STEM Starts Now is a new, digital, parent subscription program created by local pediatric occupational therapist Dr. Aimee Ketchum. Written by a team of early child developmental experts, STEM Starts Now helps babies by supporting parents through weekly emails tailored to the child’s age and developmental level. It includes tips, STEM activities, videos, articles, and information on physical, social-emotional, language, and intellectual development to help children master the skills necessary for success in kindergarten, future academics and leadership roles in today’s global world. The program is founded on the ideas that parents are children’s first teachers and parents need support to provide children with the experiences they need to be successful students. STEM Starts now is geared for every child under the age of 5 and is being used by families around the world. Locally, the program is also being used by Lancaster Nurse Family Partnership, Lancaster Health Center, Plant the Seed of Learning, and Neffsville Christian Preschool. Manheim Central reports that it is the first school district to license STEM Starts Now.

People are invited to bring along lawn chairs; however, some seating is provided. Handicapped-accessible parking is available. At the Harvest Festival, musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day and antique tractors will be on display. Free activities will include a bounce house, barrel rides, feed sack races and relays, face painting, and wagon rides. At

Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, is pleased with the success of the 2019 annual adult triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 4. “We had 267 for adults,” said a beaming Ababou. “The next challenge is for the children.” The 13th annual youth triathlon will be held at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m. The triathlon is open to all area students between the ages of 5 and 12, including those living in neighboring boroughs. Checkin time on the day of the event will be 4 p.m. Bicycle safety checks will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. The event generally concludes by 6 p.m. The rain date will be Friday, Oct. 11. Children will begin the event with a

swim in the indoor rec center pool, followed by bike laps in the rec center parking lot and a run at the rec. Participants are asked to bring their bicycle, a helmet, a swimsuit, a towel, and running shoes to the event. Proper swimwear is required. Because there is little time to change between swimming and biking, participants may bring shorts to wear over their swimsuit. Students may also bring a water bottle to help stay hydrated. Each athlete will be marked with an entry number for timing purposes. See Triathlon pg 7

1 p.m., there will be a children’s pedal tractor pull event for youths ages 3 to 14, with prizes to be awarded for winners in various age categories. New this year will be a rock painting activity and an interactive shelled corn table with toy tractors and trucks of all sizes. More than 50 themed baskets will be up for bids in the silent auction. Bidding will be open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with winners announced shortly after. A live auction will begin at 2:45 p.m., featuring a variety of items and experiences, such as tickets to area entertainment and attractions, fine jewelry, and handcrafted items. Snacks and homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase.

Additionally, MHNRC will make its debut at the Manheim Farm Show, set to take place from Monday to Friday, Oct. 7 to 11. East Fairview Church of the Brethren donated its food stand trailer, along with roasters, refrigerators, metal shelving racks, and storage items, to MHNRC to serve hot roast beef and cheddar sandwiches at the Farm Show. Wilson noted that plans are also in the works for MHNRC to embark upon facility renovations. groups. Children ages 5 to 6 will swim 25 yards, bike one-half mile, and run a quartermile. Those ages 7 and 8 will swim and run the same distances, but they will bike threequarters of a mile. Youngsters ages 9 and 10 will swim 50 yards, bike three-quarters of a mile, and run a half mile. Youths ages 11 and 12 will swim 75 yards, bike three-quarters of a mile, and run three-quarters of a mile. Ababou noted that participants will be given about 10 minutes of time to warm up by moving to music, which will give them a chance to stretch and prepare for the triathlon. Participants will be given fruit following the event. In 2018, more than 60 youngsters took part in the event. About a dozen rec center staff members and up to 30 volunteers work together to open the competition to a maximum of 110 participants. Ababou assigns six lanes in the pool with volunteers to check times. Nine volunteers are needed to time runners and another nine for cyclists. Individuals who would like to volunteer may call Ababou at 717-626-5096, ext. 239. Those wishing to participate may register by calling the rec center, visiting www.lititzrec.com, or stopping by the front desk. Readers who register by Monday, Sept. 23, will be guaranteed a goodie bag and an event T-shirt. Those who register later will receive goodie bags and T-shirts while supplies last.

small Caribbean island, Ryan and the members of Troop 70101 adopted a church in St. Croix, sending handmade candles and care packages prior to this summer’s visit. Students who took part in the St. Croix trip were all Seniors and Ambassadors, who are Girl Scouts in ninth and 10th grades and 11th and 12th grades, respectively. From June 15 to 21, group members stayed in a Catholic church on the island and spent their days preparing and serving food in soup kitchens, painting and helping with home repairs, and visiting a home for disabled youths and adults. For many of the girls, it was their first time flying and traveling out of the United States. Nineteen-year-old Trinity Haggans, who graduated from Manheim Central High School (MCHS), said that at first the experience was overwhelming. Riding in vehicles that drove on the left side of the road felt chaotic. “Everyone was very welcoming, though,” Trinity shared. “And everybody knew that we were the Girl Scouts wherever we went.” The recognition was due in part to the matching green shirts the girls wore on their first day in St. Croix, but also because the island is quite a small place. “It takes 45 minutes to drive from one end (of the island) to the other,” noted Shelby Heinsey, 17, who attends Eastern Lebanon County (ELCO) High School. “All of the houses are really bright colors.” “It was so gorgeous,” agreed Sage Gibson, a 16-year-old MCHS student. “There were chickens everywhere. They were like stray dogs, only chickens.” For Sage, a highlight of her time was visiting a home for teenagers and young adults with disabilities. “I learned that really simple things make them happy,” remarked Sage. At the home, the girls gave manicures to residents, talked with them, and played games. Makayla Cawley, 15, who attends Lebanon Catholic High School, said that her favorite part of the trip was the day the troop spent making stone soup and then delivering it to people living in homes where power still had not been restored. Linden Hall student Brynne Lancelotta, 15, said that she was surprised by how friendly the islanders were. Shelby said that everyone would welcome and greet the girls with smiles. “Coming home, I wanted to have that same attitude and be that positive and friendly,” added Shelby. Riding horses on the beach and visiting the outdoor market were other high points for the girls, along with what they dubbed “evening rooftop talks” in the moonlight on the flat, fenced-in roof of the building where they stayed. In addition to Trinity, Shelby, Sage, Makayla, and Brynne, the students who traveled to St. Croix included Olivia Faulhaber, Hailey Kowalski, Adie Ramirez, and Ansley Ryan. Troop 70101 meets on a monthly basis at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim. Girls in kindergarten through 12th grade who are interested in joining are invited to email Sara Duttera at sduttera1@gmail.com for more information.

Jenna Moffett (9th) grabbed that crucial spot to give MC the win. “It was a great team win; I’m proud of the way the girls raced,” Kennedy said. “Olivia Sunderland continues to get stronger and stronger. She’s overcoming some nagging injuries and gaining fitness. Two new runners, Maddy Hoffman and Alaina Bruckhart scored for us, so they have been great additions to the team,” he added. Sunderland placed second overall with a time of 21:23. Bella Reber (22:47) was fifth and Erin Hoffman (22:54) was sixth. Sam Shefnie, a junior midfielder won the 50-50 balls and showed great effort. The back four on defense Logan Shull, Brett Kreider, Luke Redcay and Seth Haldeman — came up big, Brenize said. “The back four on defense are a

very hard working group,” their coach said. “They communicate well and pass off to each other well. They are playing solid soccer and have each other’s back. They are fun to watch.” Thursday, Sept. 12 the Barons suffered a 1-0 loss to Ephrata. The Mountaineers scored early (11:00) and packed in the defense and held off a strong attack by the Barons. “The second half we had a number of players pushed up and several good changes and played in their (Ephrata) half of the field,” Breinze said. “It doesn’t matter how many shots on goal you have. You have to put it in the back of the net and they did. Ephrata made a play and made a good shot.”

Manheim ended its hectic week with a 6-2 loss this past Saturday to Fleetwood, one of the top teams in the state. CROSS COUNTRY The Manheim boys are steamrolling the competition, topping Annville-Cleona 23-32, Cocalico 16-50 and Elco 25-30 on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Barons coach Ryan Kennedy likes his balance of veterans and young runners and is encouraged by what he sees. “Elijah Martin and Isaac Martin are providing great leadership on and off the course,” Kennedy said. “They have both made significant improvements as a result of consistent training over the summer. point). The Barons cut Wilson’s lead to 21-14 late in the second quarter on a 48-yard pass completion from Simon to Colby Wagner, but the Barons could get no closer. Manheim coach Dave Hahn said Troy Kolk, a senior lineman, played consistent on offense and defense and battles on both lines. Hahn said Wagner had a good game and Simon did his best to hold up under distress. “We held up well in the first half, but it slipped away from us in the third quarter,” said Hahn, who wants to see his team improve on offense, defense and special teams heading into the week five matchup against Elizabethtown. The meat grinder of a nonleague schedule is over and now the Barons meet an old Section Two foe in E-town, which is coached by former Bears quarterback Andy Breault. Hahn and his staff were still working on their scouting report Sunday, but said they know E-town lost its starting quarterback early in the year and were starting a younger QB. Hahn knows E-town has a strong front seven on defense and he assumes they’ll bring pressure. “Andy Breault will have his team ready,” Hahn said. “He understands this rivalry and what it takes to compete. I look at it like sharks in the water. Teams smell blood and they Photo by Thom Swarr are going to give us their best shot Manheim’s Wes Herder breaks up a Bulldog pass during the and try to knock us off. After going down 1-0, Manheim turned it around. MaKenna Copley scored off a corner and Isabella Wendler scored about two minutes later. Central coach Andrew Stoltzfus

said Mia Reed made two fantastic saves on long shots in the second half before Hannah Adair made it 3-1 and then Wendler made it 4-1. Autumn Greiner had a really good game, Stoltzfus noted, as the senior posted two assists. On Tuesday, Sept. 10 MC beat Northeastern, 3-0. Stoltzfus said his squad finally got off to a quick start, scoring off a corner kick in the first minute by Copley. Wendler teamed up with Adair on another corner kick soon after, scoring on a short corner. They caught Northeastern unprepared. Shauna Lukus got her first varsity goal before the half. The offensive attack was strong, but Stoltzfus was also impressed with the defense and the shutout. “Rachel Merrill and Tori Fahnestock played strong in the back to not give them any good chances on goal all game,” the coach said. “Makenna Copley and Isabella Wendler were a handful up front as always.” Central lost 2-0 to Ephrata on Thursday. The Mounts got two goals early in the first half and didn’t need to press forward, Stoltzfus said, adding, that his squad was exhausted from playing four games in five days. Playing their fifth game in five days, the Barons rolled past South Western, 4-1, Saturday, Sept. 14. Copley added two goals, giving her seven goals and two assists on the season. Adair and Summer Bates also scored and Wendler notched three assists. TENNIS Manheim lost 7-0 to L-S. Illness was a factor, Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said. “We played hard but weren’t ready with our best tennis,” said Moyer, who was missing his No. 3 player and No. 1 Eliana Shenk played but played

while sick. Shenk, who played at No. 2 last year, was healthy Tuesday, Sept. 10 as the Barons held off Solanco, 5-2. Shenk posted a 6-2, 6-0 triumph. Courtney Weaver won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Abby Martin won in singles, 7-5, 6-1. In doubles, Shenk and Weaver dominated with an 8-2 victory. Martin and Kami Groff cruised to an 8-0 triumph at No.3 doubles. My No. 1 and No. 2 singles players really played strong tennis in doubles and singles,” Moyer said “Abbi Martin stepped up and played 4 singles in her first varsity singles match.” FIELD HOCKEY The Barons beat L-S in overtime, 2-1, Thursday, Sept. 12. Senior midfielder Lexi Hosler scored the winning goal 2:07 into OT. Kylie Kroesen scored the Barons first goal at 7:35 into the first half. “The girls played a very smart overtime period and took care of the ball,” head coach Morgan Briggs said. “We played to our strengths and kept the ball on the offensive end of the field. Alissa Brubaker had a heck of a game and worked her tail off all over the field.” Earlier in the week the Barons defeated McCaskey, 4-0. Krosen scored twice. Senior Maddy Barbush, who has committed to East Stroudsburg next year, scored, as did senior Lily Sipel. Hosler and Jenna Lutz added assists. Central had 19 corners and 12 shots. Manheim ended the week Saturday with a 4-1 loss to East Pennsboro. Hosler scored Manheim’s lone goal. Mikayla Regan had nine saves. Section Three clash. The top score was by Cocalio at 322. It was a tough match for the Barons, who finished 0-5. Gage McCabe, who qualified for the L-L League tournament, had a 102. Austin Nelson, who Baron’ coach Charlie Fisher said has shown significant improvement during the season, also shot 102. Ryan Reed posted a 105 and Dylan Groff shot a 108. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The Barons won 3-0 against Conrad Weiser 25-7, 25-20 and 25-22. Elena Kready had four aces, Tori Henderson seven kills (Emma Moyer added five kills) and two digs, Maddie Knier had two blocks and Grace Stoltzfus notched 12 assists. Manheim was clicking on offense and defense. “Tough serving and strong defense were the keys to the win,” head coach Jason Moyer said. “We were able to keep them out of system with our serves and convert free balls into points.” Manheim lost a crazy match to E-town, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Kalie Zimmerman had four kills and two aces. Kready added four blocks, Henderson scooped seven digs and Stoltzfus dished out 11 assists. “Elizabethtown is a strong team and we knew they would be a challenge for us,” Moyer said. “We were able to hold our ground and each one of the games was full of some long rallies with lots of great defensive play.” MC rebounded with a 25-14, 25-15 and 25-9 victory over Conrad Weiser Saturday, Sept. 14. Zimmerman (five kills, two aces) and Henderson (4 kills 5 digs) paced the squad on the stat sheet. Stoltzfus added 10 assists and Knier and Moyer had 3 and 2 assists, respectively.

All present may join in a prayer of dedication. Thirty-one students in grades one to 10, along with four teachers, began school on Sept. 6, 1949.
