“We25.will have members of our board there to take people on tours of the food pantry,” said Cathy Knittle, chairperson of the organization. “People will be able to walk around to the different rooms, and we’ll have volunteers stationed in each room to explain what’s in that room. We’ll also have some light refreshments available.”Alongwith showcasing the pantry’s inventory, the open house will provide the public with opportunities to learn about volunteering, donating items or registering to become a client, Knittle stated.

Mastros Breitigan-Lannigan has seen cancer from both sides - as a patient and as a caretaker - and she wants to help. “I’m cancer-free now from Stage III breast cancer, but I’m still going through treatments,” said the owner of Genesis Aesthetics in Manheim. “I also know what it’s like to be a caretaker, because my mom was just diagnosed with small-cell lungNikicancer.”opened her medical aesthetics office to help people look and feel their best, both inside and out. Originally located in East Petersburg, the business soon outgrew that space and moved to 15 Market St. in Manheim earlier this year. While she offers a full line of services, Niki focuses on treatments given to cancer patients
“That’s for both men and women who are caregivers,” she said. “People often forget about the caregivers and everything they go through.”Nikijoked that giving away services might not be the best business model, but she’s confident it’s the right decision. “I invited my oncologist, who is now a friend, to one of my events and he said ‘Niki, how are you going to make money? You’re giving everything away for free.’ I said, ‘The money will come because I have faith,’” she recalled, adding that she and her mother have also relied on a large support system of family and friends. “I am all about giving back and helping others. I believe that’s why I’m still alive.”
For 10 years, the Manheim Central Food Pantry has provided services to residents of the Manheim Central School District at 334 W. Gramby St. To mark its decade at that location, the pantry will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.

As an aesthetician, she had already been giving free oncology facials as well removing branding tattoos for victims of sex trafficking. “While I was going through treatment, I worked on getting more certifications,” she said, explaining that these included learning how to do 3D tattoos and becoming a certified oncology skin therapist. “I believe it’s important to always keep learning.”

Knittle noted that the need for the pantry has increased over the past few years. “Our number of registered households has doubled,” she said. “We’re seeing a lot of new registrations.”Anyonewho resides in the Manheim Central School District is eligible to receive items from the pantry, she commented. “We have a nondiscrimination policy, and everyone is accepted,” she said, adding that clients must complete a self-declaration annually, listing their income and the number of people in their household.
Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer special events. Programs are open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-9643808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number. Attendees should meet at the Environmental Center.
The Manheim Central Food Pantry operated for many years out of the basement of a local church. When it relocated to its current
location, the former parsonage of Salem United Methodist Church, it was able to increase inventory to better serve clients. “We are a supplemental food pantry,” Knittle said, noting that the organization is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg. “We have milk, eggs, frozen meats and fresh produce, not just canned goods. Over the years, we’ve gotten quite a few freezers and refrigerators, so we have the ability to keep fresh and frozen items.” Additionally, clients may pick up personal care items, such as toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and shampoo.

According to Donna Hammond, a member of the Friends of the Lititz Public Library, not holding a jewelry sale since the advent of COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 has resulted in an interesting problem. “We can’t get the closet closed because it’s filled with boxes like this (of vintage and costume jewelry),” said Hammond with a chuckle. “People were at home and had time to go through their jewelry boxes, so we will have a fantastic selection,” she predicted.

On the volleyball court, the Lady Barons shook off a loss to Elizabethtown by ripping off three straight wins by a combined 9-1 tally. The run started on September 8th with a 3-1 win over Cocalico where head coach Jason Moyer credited his team’s passing game in wins of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22.
“Passing clicked for us tonight,” said Moyer. “We were able to control the first
Manheim posted another 7-0 win on the 13th, this time over Solanco with Williams, Miller, Mylin and Peters taking the singles matches. Huber and Kettler teamed up for one of the doubles wins while Williams and Mylin along with Miller and Peters finished the action
tallied 13 kills, five aces and three blocks while Doerschuk finished with 20 assists.
The tables turned for Central’s September 13th face-off with Elizabethtown where Manheim went 0-2, losing by a combined 10-2. Drew Greiner netted the lone score for the boys while Olissa Clingenpeel held that honor for the Lady Barons. Wettig finished with four saves in the 4-1 loss while Smith had three saves in the boys’ 6-1 setback.

From left, Libby Urban, Kiley Hosler, Cali Inthavongsa, Monica Herman and goalie Laci Nelson defend a Manheim Township corner during the Barons’ 4-0 loss to the visiting Blue Streaks on September 8.
The football team reached 30 thanks to a 35-19 victory over Cocalico on the 9th. Brycen Arnold powered an efficient ground attack while Zach Hahn tossed four touchdown passes to four different players to pilot the passing attack. Hahn finished with 289 yards to go with those four scores, the first of which went to Rocco Daugherty and counted as Manheim’s lone first quarter TD. Arnold, who finished with 150 yards, picked up his lone score on a 22-yard scamper to make it 14-13. Hahn tossed his second TD pass, this one to Aaron Enterline covering 41-yards to make it 21-13 at the break. Bode Sipel was up next, hauling in a 42-yard score that gave the Barons breathing room at 28-19, after the Eagles managed to close the gap to 21-19.
In between the two setbacks the Lady Barons enjoyed a quick two game winning stretch that allowed Manheim to capture their own field hockey tournament. Central opened with a 5-0 romp over Cedar Cliff before capping the day with a 1-0 victory over East Pennsboro. Nelson totaled four saves, all against East Penn with Libby Urban using a Paige Garner pass to score the game winner.
The Lady Baron tennis team finished an undefeated first half of the season, taking out Lampeter-Strasburg, Lancaster Mennonite and Solanco to improve to 8-0.

In doubles action the Williams-Mylin and the Kowalski-Kettler duos collected wins in both matches while Miller and Peters seized the final win against the Lady Pioneers with Peters and Lauren Huber taking the honor opposite Mennonite.

Vocal Harmonix’s repertoire includes both old and new songs, and some of the selections are presented in a barbershop quartet style. One of the 21st-century songs to be performed at the Sept. 25 event is “Never Gonna Let You Down,” introduced by singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat in 2014. Vocal Harmonix uses costuming and choreography to add to the enjoyment of the audience, said Lois Smith, one of the two visual leaders of the chorus.
