David Deck spends a lot of time turning things over. At antique stores or flea markets, the Manheim resident can be found picking up objects and looking at what’s marked on the bottom. He’s searching for the words “Made in Occupied Japan.” David is a member of The Upside-Down World of Occupied Japan (OJ), a nationwide club of collectors that will be convening in Manheim later this month. After a membersonly meeting, the club will host an event that’s open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1258 Newport Road, Penryn. David estimates that more than 1,000 items from 40 club members will be for sale at the event. “We’ll also do appraisals on site if people want to bring their items,” he noted.

her own ministry, New Life Center for Mothers and Children, in Glen Rock,” Lindsey said. Additional speakers will include Carlene Wolf, pastor of Washington Boro United Methodist Church; Regina Driver, shelter administrator for Hands Across the Street in Columbia; and Lindsey, who will talk about her own spiritual and personal growth. “The people who are speaking are connected to our ministry and what we’re trying to do with 4C,” she explained. “The goal of the conference is for women in our community to see other women living next to them who are growing, who are overcoming obstacles. These are women who are right next door.
They are reachable and relatable.” Lindsey got the idea for the 4C Conference after attending a similar event in Hershey. “I came back thinking, ‘How can we bring that inspiration to a local level?’” she recalled. “We want to inspire women and help them grow to their full potential.” Lindsey hopes the conference will prompt women to seek transformation in their lives and walk away empowered. “It’s going to be a time of encouragement and inspiration no matter where you are in your journey,” she said. “It’s going to be a very, very powerful event.” For more information on the 4C Conference or to register, search for “4C Annual Conference” on Facebook.

eather Lindsey believes we’re all capable of transforming ourselves into who we truly want to be. She’ll focus on that idea during the annual 4C Conference, to be held Saturday, Oct. 9, at ITLM Faith Community Church, 4696 Breezyview Drive, Columbia. The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lindsey, the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, created 4C, a women’s ministry that meets in Manheim and Columbia. With a mission to empower women, 4C offers opportunities for community, conversation, creative arts and
worship. The “C’s” stand for conversation, coloring, coffee and Christ. This is the second year Lindsey has held a daylong conference, and this year’s theme, “Transformation,” will focus on healing. Worship music will be performed by local husband-and-wife singersongwriters Dan and Lauren. The ITLM drama team will perform a skit, and a hands-on participatory activity that Lindsey described as an “artistic healing project” will be featured at the conference. Local chef Stephen Loechner will provide a catered meal, and panelists will offer testimonials throughout the day. “One of our keynote speakers has

United Zion Dedicates Chapel
Representatives of United Zion Retirement Community, along with special guests, gathered for the Heart of the Home ribbon cutting.
United Zion Retirement Community, 722 Furnace Hills Pike, north of downtown Lititz, held its ribbon cutting and chapel dedication on Sept. 9. This event marked the end of construction on the Heart of the Home project, which included a larger chapel and renovated entrance. Liz Ackerman from the Northern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce welcomed everyone to the ribbon cutting, and state Sen. Ryan Aument gave remarks on the close-knit United Zion community. The ribbon was cut by CEO Sue Verdegem and board president Jessica Musser. After the ribbon cutting, the event moved inside for the chapel dedication. The chapel dedication started with music by United Zion’s resident quartet of Mary and Glenn Snyder and Jim and Rosene Garman, accompanied by Lilly Walters on piano. Chaplain Ethan Levengood offered the dedication and blessing, which was followed by remarks and a reading by residents Nino and Betty Pesce. Their presentation included Psalm 90, a prayer of Moses. Verdegem thanked the supporters of Heart of the Home and spoke of her excitement about the project. Board member pastor Mel Horst ended the dedication with remarks on the process and the beauty of the final results. A small reception followed the event.
The previous chapel, which sat about 50 residents, was build 50 years ago, when United Zion served about half the residents it currently has. The new chapel auditorium seats 125 people with room for overflow for larger events. It has ample natural light and views overlooking the countryside. The updated entrance now includes a porte cochère. The new chapel will continue to host daily devotions, Sunday worship services, Bible studies and choir as well as musical performances and other programming for residents and the community. This was the second phase of the two-year plan to renovate the main public spaces, which started last spring with the renovations that enlarged the restaurant space for on-campus dining. The new chapel is now in the heart of the home right off the renovated lobby. Paul Risk Construction was the contractor for this project, and RLPS was the architect. Naming opportunities are still available. For more details on the project, visit www.uzrc.org/giving/heart. United Zion will hold an open house on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are requested by calling 717-627-8421 or emailing marketing@uzrc.org. For more details, visit www.uzrc.org.

Porchwalk Moves To Park BY ANN MEAD ASH
dors for visitors to try to win. “Last year we didn’t have a show,” noted Bradley, who added that COVID-19 concerns made it difficult to find hosts to stage the event as it was in the past in the homes, on the porches, and in the yards of Lititz residents. “We wanted to do it (in a way) to bring people together,” said Bradley, who added that she hopes the park will offer space for the event to grow. In keeping with the change of venue,
the event has a new logo, which Bradley said reflects both the town of Lititz and the sponsorship of Moravian Manor. To draw attention to the participating artists, organizers have been spotlighting artwork in Facebook posts. “It’s been fun getting the pictures of the artisans and what they do,” said Bradley. She pointed out that the original show in 1999 attracted those who worked in traditional
crafts such as scissor cutting, handcrafted books, theorem painting, baskets, and wildlife art. “I think our (2021) show reflects more the crafters and artisans that are out there (now),” she noted. Readers who would like to know more about the event may visit www.lititzporch walk.com or search for “Lititz Porchwalk” on Facebook. Individual questions may be emailed to lititz porchwalk@gmail.com.
Flexibility can be the key to holding a successful event. Organizers of the Lititz Artisans Porchwalk, which is sponsored by Moravian Manor, realized that when planning this year’s annual gathering of talented artists and crafters. “We transitioned to a one-day show in one location and expanded the hours,” said Nancy Bradley, who is excited to have nearly 30 vendors registered to participate, 11 of whom are new to the show this year. This year’s Artisans Porchwalk, the 22nd annual, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The event will be held in the grassy area between the Oehme Gazebo and the parking lot closest to Broad Street. The park offers ample parking and nearby restrooms. Bradley, who will be participating in the show for the seventh year, noted that there will be “great variety” in the items offered for sale by this Nancy Bradley will participate in the 22nd annual Lititz Artisans Porchwalk in Lititz year’s vendors. “We will have Springs Park. pottery, gourd art, original watercolor paintings, hammered copper sculptures, mixed-media jewelry, wood turnings, acrylic and oil paintSEPTEMBER 22-28 ings, handcrafted wooden signs, felted and knitted Guernsey's Gift Fresh John F. David Deck with some of his Made in Occupied Japan items
At 77, David continues to add to his collection and said he expects his youngest son to one day acquire his treasures. Until then, he’s always on the hunt for more. “It’s an affordable hobby,” he remarked. “I love finding different items. You have to look
at each one and see if the piece is marked. That’s the fun of it.” For more information on the Occupied Japan club gettogether, visit https://tinyurl. com/826wkcut. Contact David about buying or selling items at 717-203-3657.
Boutique 1780 Celebrates Anniversary Boutique 1780, a women’s clothing store in Manheim, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. Business owner Ashley Martin opened the store when her youngest daughter was 5 months old. Martin explained that she struggled to regain her sense of style along with other new moms, which was the inspiration for the business. The business started small, with two racks of clothing. Martin worked in her garage, bring-
ing clothes to vendor events and in-home parties before her business grew to the point where she needed a mobile boutique. A converted Winnebago camper allowed her to travel to events more easily and to keep her two daughters with her. Boutique 1780 was named the Pennsylvania Mobile Boutique of the year in 2020 and 2021 by the Boutique Hub. This spring, Martin sold the camper and opened a storefront at 24 N. Main St., Man-
heim. Martin said that she misses traveling to different events, but opening a brick and mortar location was always the goal. According to Martin, one of the things that makes the business unique is the size range offered. Each style is available in small through 3X, which means most women can come in and shop off any rack. The boutique features a large variety of tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, jewelry, beauty products
and body care items, locally made candles and handbags. Martin still brings her children to the boutique, where they have been known to help dust, check out customers and rearrange the sales floor. Martin’s oldest daughter, who is now 7, says she plans to take over the business when she is 18. For more information, including store hours, visit www.facebook.com /boutique1780.

help the Japanese people get back on their feet.” David, who has been collecting the items for about 25 years, will host the Manheim meeting with his brother, Gary. “Getting together with the club is a lot of fun,” he stated. “We sit and tell stories and get to know each other, since many of us have only met through Facebook.” The brothers have traveled across the country for annual club meetings, including to Nashville, where last year’s meeting was held. The OJ club has existed for more than 40 years and is currently run by Shoko Tanaka, who lives in California, and Kathy Gardner, who resides in Indiana.

In a small building off Route 72 in Manheim, David has amassed an impressive collection of OJ items. Shelves are filled with dishes, tea sets, plates, banks, figurines, toys, lamps and more. Each item bears a sticker, stamp, engraving or embossment that identifies it as Made in Occupied Japan. As David explained, U.S. forces stayed in Japan from 1945 to 1952, with the goal of helping the Japanese rebuild after World War II. “From 1947 to 1952, General MacArthur declared that anything exported from Japan was to be marked ‘Made in Occupied Japan,’” he stated. “It was marked that way so the American people would know it and would buy it to

just overall, they are very aggressive players, Briggs said. The girls know their roles on the team and how to play to their strengths. “We’re able to exploit a lot of teams by our aggressive play,” she said, “and that was really on display, especially against Warwick and against Cocalico (Monday).” The Barons earned a 5-0 triumph over the Eagles on Sept. 13. Kylie Kroesen put Central up 1-0 at halftime. The Barons scored four times in the second half. Kroesen scored
her second goal in the third quarter, along with Mikayla Appel. Maddie Hartzler and Kiley Hosler found the Morgan Briggs likes the ingrediback of the cage in the fourth. ents she has in her kitchen. They started off strong with two quick goals in the contest, as off the opening draw, Ella Brubaker received a beautiful ball from Herzler into space and used her speed to find the back of the cage. “It was nice to start the game with a 1-0 lead to boost the girls’ confidence going into the rest of the game,” Brigg said. Brubaker scored again and Kroesen added a goal. The Barons lost 5-2 to East Pennsboro in the finals. Kroesen scored and had an assist and Hartzler added a goal. FOOTBALL What is more impressive than the Barons’ 3-0 record? It is how they are doing it. They have outscored their opponents 109-7 (the seven came in the first game of the season). The latest win was a 60-0 shellacking of Susquehanna Township. Quarterback Judd Novak threw three touchdowns and passed for 163 yards. Receiver Owen Sensenig caught six passes for 72 yards. each had five tackles. Larry Marley added an interception. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons are proving to be a second half team, scoring twice after intermission against Lampeter-Strasburg on Sept. 13 for a 20 victory. Goalie Dylan Smith collected eight saves in the shutout. Central coach Rod Brenize said Connor Caterbone made a midfield run and received a through ball from Luke Redcay. Caterbone beat his man, the keeper came out and Caterbone maneuvered around him and sent his shot into an empty net on what Brenize called a gorgeous goal. Gabe Redcay capped the evening with a score in the final 16 seconds of play on a shot from 45 yards, chipping the keeper. Central pulled an upset, beating two-time defending Section Two champion McCaskey 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 9. Caterbone scored in the 19th minute of play. Gabe Redcay notched the game-winner two minutes into OT. Braydn Dombach assisted on both goals. The Barons defense - Max Hudson, Kristian Citko Aiden Beck, Cameron Bowser, and Smith - held the Red Tornado’s high-powered offense in check. And junior Keeper Dylan Smith had a fine day between the pipes. GIRLS’ SOCCER Five Lady Barons scored in a 6-0 rout over McCaskey on Sept. 9. Abbie Reed, Summer Bates, Hannah Adair, Abby Knapp, and McKenna Enck each registered goals. Knapp scored twice. Central dropped a 1-0 Section Two contest to L-S on Sept. 13. VOLLEYBALL Manheim defeated Cocalico in three games, winning an exciting first game, 28-26 and then 25-18 and 25-13. Madison Knier and Raegan Nissley led the team with six kills each. Knier added three blocks. Addy Doerschuk dished out 12 assists and Grace Stoltzfus notched 10 digs. Emma Moyer had five aces. This was a good bounce back win for the Barons, who lost 3-0 to Warwick night before in Lititz. TENNIS Central shutout Donegal, 4-0. All three doubles teams were victorious. Sophomore Sammi Williams won her first singles match, 6-3, 61. Manheim also beat Exeter, 4-3. Brianna Mylin had the lone win in singles in an exciting match. After losing 6-3 in the first set, Mylin rallied to take the next two - 7-6 (3) and 10-6. The Lady Barons rolled to a 7-0 triumph over Lebanon on Sept. 13. The singles winners included Gabby Wettig, Holly Miller, Kami Groff, and Brooke Kettler. In doubles, Wettig and Mylin, Miller and Williams, and Lauren Huber/Hailey Kowalski all posted victories. PUBLIC AUCTION
was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine. While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many of our coaches are teachers, and teachers are so incredibly overloaded right now,” explained West, who is looking to family members of girls and community members to step up. “The girls need the social and emotional connection with friends now more than ever,” said West, who hopes that by spring the program will be able to serve 1,000 girls countywide as in the past. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit www.gotrlancaster .org. Those who have questions about volunteering may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

His parents provided a safe childhood and the gift of access to education, yet there were times when they financially struggled to send him to school every year. To keep up with his classmates, he would spend days outside the classroom window listening to lessons and evenings completing homework by candlelight until his family could afford for him to return. Badriaki earned a Doctor of Ministry in leadership and global perspectives from George Fox University, a Master of Arts in pastoral and
