MHALC Presents CMAP During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee
Assistance Program (EAP),” explained McDevitt, who added that the organization provided a lot of guidance in the best way to execute the plan, especially emphasizing that less than a quarter of each patient’s session should be spent on paperwork. “We wanted it devoted to getting to the (patient’s) story,” said McDevitt. “We want people to feel comfortable and to walk away with some tools, skills, and ideas on how to move forward with the angst or fear that they have.” MHALC hired Caryn Thompson to be the project coordinator. In early May, she began researching the best way to implement the program, amassing a list of nearly 70 providers, which was reduced to 10 providers based on grant applications. The final list represents a variety, from groups to individuals, with providers that offer bilingual services, those who

focus on seniors, one whose specialty is the Plain population, and more. “We wanted to make sure we (reached) everybody in the county,” Thompson said. By early June, Thompson was holding online training sessions for the providers to let them know what was expected and to explain the documentation they needed to complete so that MHALC will have the demographic information needed to continue the program. McDevitt explained that the program is designed as an approach to the increase in anxiety, depression, and other fear-related behaviors associated with the shutdown. “We have seen an increase in police calls, and crisis outreach is starting to tick up now,” she said. Lancaster County residents who are in need of professional support may call MHALC at 717-397-7461 on
One of life’s greatest tragedies is when a parent loses a child. But some grieving parents have been able to transform their heartbreak into positive efforts to benefit the community. Such is the case with Stacy Emminger, executive director of the Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), which supports those in recovery and provides assistance to families that have a loved one with addiction issues.

Essential workers in Lancaster County who are struggling with the emotional effects of COVID-19 may be eligible for a new program that provides three free sessions with a therapist. The program is funded by the Steinman Foundation and administered by Mental Health America of Lancaster County.
Children and their families from the Manheim community are invited to a Fall Fest to be held in the parking lot at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 50 N. Main St., Manheim, on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. The rain date for the event will be Sunday, Oct. 4. The Fall Fest, being presented by St. Paul’s UCC and the Teen Central youth center, will feature a variety of fall-themed games, along with music, crafts, prizes, food and beverages. Admission and activities are free and open to all. Social distancing protocols will be in place to keep everyone safe during the event. “All of the food will be individually packaged and served in a safe format,” explained Janelle Heying, Teen Central executive director. “Anything (that children) touch whether they are coloring or doing crafts - they will keep. Masks are mandatory, and there will be plenty of hand sanitizer. Most of the stations will be spread far apart and the games will set up in a way that safe
social distancing will be maintained.” The Fall Fest is part of ongoing partnership between the two organizations. Heying noted that church members volunteer at the youth center and in the past the church has conducted Bible studies there as well. “They’ve always been a wonderful support both financially and volunteering their time and resources,” said Heying. “We will bring our volunteers to help out (at the Fall Fest), serve food and help with the crafts.” She noted that organizers are happy to provide a free, fun family activity in a time when a lot of events are being canceled. “We are excited to bring people together in his way,” she said. “Last year, we served between 80 and 100 people. This year we are preparing for 120. We are hoping to have another great turnout.” Teen Central is located at 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim. For more information about the center and the programs and activities offered for youths, readers may visit www.teencentralmanheim.org, call 717-664-2990 or search for “Teen Central Manheim” on Facebook.

weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an intake form. “You will talk to one of our navigators who will help you identify a therapist,” said McDevitt. Thompson will recommend a therapist, and CMAP will provide three free confidential counseling sessions. The client will call the provider for an appointment, but MHALC will send out a resource packet to the client and follow up to provide additional support as needed. Thompson said that if the client wishes to continue after three sessions, she has a list of insurances the providers will accept. “If they don’t have insurance, we are partnering with Lancaster Osteopathic Health for their copay assistance program,” said Thompson. “That information is included in the resource packet I send out.” According to Thompson, more than 30% of people in the United States experience anxiety on a regular basis, ranging from fear of insects to extreme social anxiety. She noted that anxiety and depression are common responses to a pandemic, but isolation during a season when people are used to being outdoors with others compounds those issues. “We can’t function on a typical seasonal level,” Thompson said. “A lot of parents don’t know how to handle the financial aspect of going back to work and (supporting their children’s schooling). There are a lot of questions.” The partnership has set a goal of helping to alleviate these issues by providing professional support to those workers in need. “Having someone outside your family to talk to can help,” said Thompson. It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. This won’t be for long. We anticipate this as a temporary measure as we navigate the next few months. As we move forward, every effort will be made to continue to supply you with your community’s news and advertising messages. It is absolutely paramount that we support our local businesses by shopping locally, eating locally, and utilizing our local service industries. Additionally, our nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in filling the needs within our communities. Let’s continue to live out what is at the heart of community - together, we can do great things! Emminger lost her son, Anthony Perez, to an overdose when he was 23. The family decided to form DSAA after learning that other local parents were dealing the same issues. DSAA began by offering family support groups that met at the Sheetz Reception Center in Mount Joy. Emminger later became a certified family recovery specialist, and the facility opened its own office in 2015. In 2019, DSAA relocated to a new and larger space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy. After being approached by Rick Kastner, executive director of the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission, DSAA became affiliated with the agency. “We work one-on-one with families,” Emminger said. “We guide them through steps they can take to guide their loved ones to get some help. We also offer support groups and refer (people) to treatment centers.” DSAA’s latest effort is to provide care kits to those who have recently completed an addiction treatment program and are

to battle their addictions. “(They are) learning how to exist without the substance they depended on,” said Emminger. “We want the community to come around them. I believe the solution to addiction is community. Addiction is a very isolating disease.” Emminger pointed out that DSAA will continue to assemble the care kits as the number of recovery houses increases. “When we have enough filled bags for a certain house, we will pack them, and we will take them out. residing in recovery houses. “Our outreach coordinator has been connecting with all the recovery houses in (Lancaster) County to see what their needs are,” said Emminger. “Even though our focus is the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and Marietta area, we are a county organization.” DSAA had string bags emblazoned with its logo and began filling them with items from its in-house supply of hygiene products. Also included in the bags is information about DSAA and its services. The public is invited to participate in the effort by donating items for the bags such as body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and dental floss. Alcoholbased mouthwash and hand sanitizers will not be accepted. Also needed are stamps, pens and writing tablets, puzzle books, snacks, inspirational books and vouchers for food or haircuts. An outdoor donation bin is located on the front porch at DSAA. Those not local to the area are invited to order items for donation or sponsor a bag for a set fee. “You could order a case of shampoo and have it sent to us or donate via PayPal or send a check. All the money will be kept separately (for the kits),” Emminger noted. Most importantly, donors are asked to send a note or a card to put in the bag. “The thing that touches (the recipients) the most is if you write a personal note. Just put your first name and say, ‘Keep up the good work’ or ‘We are praying for you.’ It makes them feel like someone (cares) about them,” Emminger emphasized. A secondary goal is to make the community aware of people in recovery houses, many of whom are unemployed and are continuing with outpatient treatment
