Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is moving into a new space at 78 E. about addiction,” shared Emminger. “With Brandon you have the story of someone who was literally a millionaire and lost everything. His story is a pretty gnarly one.” To purchase tickets for the DSAA Sober Spooktacular in advance, interested individuals may email lexi.dsaa@gmail.com or call 717-492-4596. heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA previously operated from an approximately 400-square-foot office space at 15A W. Main St., Mount Joy, and now has room to offer more programming at its new approximately 1,275-squarefoot location. With the lease signed on Sept. 1 and moving well underway, Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado plan to open the doors of DSAA’s new location to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. An open house event is in the works. Details on that, as well as regular hours for the new site, will be posted at www.facebook.com/Donegal SubstanceAbuseAlliance/ and http://dsasquared.org/ once determined. DSAA currently offers support groups for family members, assistance entering into treatment, and the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) program. Beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 9, instructor Kim Stoltzfus will offer 12-step yoga for interested individuals. “Anyone that identifies with the 12-step program is welcome,” said Emminger. The yoga sessions will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Emminger and Mercado plan to create a welcoming sober space onsite too, with social events every other Friday evening for people who are in recovery. “We’re going to be kicking off a lot of things this fall, and we’re open to other agencies and all the A’s (anonymous) groups using our space,” explained Emminger. “We basically want it to be full all the time.” Emminger’s goal is to purchase a larger space for DSAA in two years so that the organization can provide support and programming for even more individuals in the greater Mount Joy area. She is committed to serving this part of the county, noting that it can be difficult for people to get into Lancaster city where addiction resources and assistance are often more readily available. On Saturday, Oct. 26, DSAA will host its second annual Sober Spooktacular from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The public is invited to attend to learn about and support

day. Snow explained that in the 19th century, the riverfront from Marietta to Columbia was famous for large and productive foundries producing pig iron. When molten iron was poured in a cast, the ingots looked like piglets attached to the main mold - hence the nickname of “pig iron. With eight furnaces and a rolling mill located throughout Marietta and Columbia, the iron industry had an impact on the area’s economic development and population growth and earned Lancaster County a high ranking in the production of pig iron at that time, according to www.mariettarestoration.org. Harrier Teams Blank Spartans, Fall to L-S By Eric G. Stark
The Manheim Central boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both suffered their first losses of the year on Monday, Sept. 16 against Lampeter-Strasburg. In boys’ action, L-S beat the Barons 23-35. MC was victorious against Garden Spot 18-44 in the tri-meet. Elijah Wagner finished second overall with a time of 17:22. His fellow senior teammate, Isaac Martin, was on his heels, placing third, running 17:33. L-S had runners in the next four placements and had five boys place in the top seven. Central sophomore Michael Greenwald placed eighth overall with a time of 17:53. Brady Knier was 11th overall with a time of 18:05 and Baily Garman ran an 18:51,
good for 14th overall. On the girls’ side, L-S beat Central 20-35 but the Barons defeated Garden Spot 15-55. It is rare not to see Olivia Sunderland’s name among the top two placeholders in a meet. The talented sophomore ran a 20:36, good for fourth overall. Fellow sophomore Madelynn Hoffman was eighth with a time of 22:41. She was followed closely by sophomore teammates Bella Reber (22:43) and Alaina Bruckhart (22:46) as they placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Senior Erin Hoffman ran a 22:58 to place 12th and freshman Jenna Moffett, with a 24:12, rounded out the top 15 runners. “Both of our teams ran excellent races in terms of effort and executing the race plan,” Kennedy said. “L-S deserves a
lot of credit. They ran well and flat out beat us. But I’m proud of how our runners battled all the way to the finish. Isaac Martin and Elijah Wagner ran particularly gritty races. They’re making considerable improvements every week. “For the girls, Alaina Bruckhart and Madelyn Hoffman raced hard and had big personal records. I’m impressed at how confidently they race as first year runners.” GOLF On Monday, Sept. 16 the Barons shot one of their better team scores on the year in the last regular season match, posting a 381 at Fox Chase Golf Club. Ryan Reed shot an 89 and Austin Nelson notched a 90 to lead the way. Dylan Groff and Gage McCabe each recorded scores of 101. “Monday I was very happy with our effort,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said. “Fox Chase is a little more open and allows more error off the tee. At the beginning of the year I thought it would be difficult to get past fourth
place in a difficult section.” Fisher said after the first match of the season he and the team talked and concluded that they were not going to catch the top three teams in the section. He emphasized staying strong and serious on the course, that competitive golf is “a different beast” than just playing with friends. Fisher, who said five of his top six golfers are seniors, liked the way his team finished the season, noting that Reed and Nelson were very consistent in shooting their scores. The Barons finished the season with a 10-20 record, which was a little less wins than Fisher and his 11-player team expected, but, in most cases, they reached their individual goal. “The goal at the beginning of the season was to get individual scores down and some guys were happy, others not so much,” he said. “For Austin to shoot a 90, he was at 120 last year so that was really cool.” McCabe shot an 85 earlier this
year, allowing him to qualify for the league match. Scott Westfield had the best average with a 99 and Dylan Groff the third best average at 100 to also qualify for the league match. Junior Wyatt Becker impressed Fisher with his progress this season. Fisher was the team’s No.6 golfer. He is a basketball player who came out for golf the middle of last year and fell in love with the game, said Fisher about Becker, who will be the only player back next season who competed in a match this year. This was Becker’s first full year and he averaged about 105. FOOTBALL The Barons beat E-town 54-6 Friday, Sept. 20 in the Section Two opener for both teams. They are 1-0 in the section, and MC coach Dave Hahn said it was nice to get that first section win. Central tallied 547 total yards of offense, passing for 381 yards and rushing for 166 yards. The Barons,
who were so effective on offense that they didn’t punt all night, had 29 first downs and only allowed the Bears 8. Hahn said he was pleased with how the offense clicked through the air. “We were trying to get the passing game on track because we feel that’s our identity,” Hahn said. “We did a good job of executing it.” Central has a young offensive line and the coaching staff worked in 10 offensive linemen against E-town, giving the O-line valuable experience. “Most of these guys are seniors, but they are young seniors because they lack experience,” Hahn said. “We want to create competition among ourselves. I’d love to settle in with five guys, but we are not there yet. If they are doing their job they will stay in. If they’re not doing their job they will come out.” Hahn said Troy Kolk has been the stalwart of the line, other guys Christian Zdenek and Nolan Weaver to name a couple - rotated in and did a

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition pulled out a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-23). Zimmerman had two aces. Henderson notched seven kills and 11 blocks. Stoltzfus collected 24 assists. Moyer and Knier each had two digs. The girls lost to Ephrata 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept.17. The Barons won the first game 25-21, but lost the next three games, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-16. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons lost to McCaskey, 3-2, Tuesday, Sept. 17. McCaskey scored in the first five minutes of action and added a second first-half goal at the 30-minute mark to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. MC got a goal from Bryce Dombach (19:00) in the first half and Tyler Snavely (50:00) in the second half. Dylan Smith had one save for the Barons, who had two corners and four shots. Central bounced back with a 5-0 victory against Garden Spot on Thursday, Sept. 19. The Barons put this game away early, scoring four times in the first half. Snavely scored twice and added an assist and Brett Kreider added a goal and an assist. Goalie Logan Whitehouse had four saves. Barons’ coach Rod Brenize said Seth Haldeman, a senior defenseman played well in front of Whitehouse. MC lost 3-2 to West York Saturday, Sept. 21. After trailing 3-0 at intermission, the Barons rallied for two goals in the second half and came up just short of tying the game. Andrew Donmoyer and Nate Reed scored for Central. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Barons cruised to a 10-0 victory against McCaskey on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Isabella Wendler scored twice for Central with Makenna Copley, Kaylee Neff, Mia Reed, Corrine King, Shauna Lukus, Tylee Stauffer, Grace Perron and Rachel Nolt also chipping in. Central also secured a huge Section Two triumph, beating Garden Spot 1-0 on Thursday, Sept. 19. Nolt registered the only goal, scoring at the 62:00 mark. Hannah Adair registered the assist. The Barons beat Fleetwood 4-1 Saturday on goals by Tori Fahnestock (2), Copley and Summer Bates. In three games the Barons outscored their opponents 15-1. “With injuries in our midfield, sophomores Rachel Nolt and Summer Bates, and freshman Mikayla Beck have been picking up more minutes and carrying the load there,” Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “Our

backline has been anchored by junior Rachel Merrill and senior Tori Fahnestock, but the outside backs have been doing a great job covering their position by committee between senior Kelly Abrahamson, juniors Alayna Thompson and Grace Perron, and sophomore Grace Cassel. FIELD HOCKEY The Lady Barons defeated Cocalico 3-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Two of the scorers, Lexi Hosler and Maddy Barbush, both seniors, have college commitments to Liberty and East Stroudsburg, respectively. Also scoring was Kylie Kroesen. nice job up front, Hahn said. Central’s coach said senior quarterback Evan Simon played well and was effective as a passer (he threw for 356 yards). Colby Wagner, who had 15 receptions for 233 yards and scored a touchdown and had two carries rushing for 16 yards and a touchdown on the ground, also played well, the coach said. Hahn credited running back Jake Harbach (two rushing TDs, one receiving) for several big plays on offense, including a big gain on a screen pass just before halftime. Next up for the Barons is section rival Cocalico Friday, Sept. 27. “Same old same old,” the coach said. “Cocalico brings out the best in us and we bring out the best in them. Noah Palm and Brock Gingrich are competitive guys.” GIRLS’ TENNIS The Barons had a great week on the courts. They beat McCaskey and Cocalico both by 6-1 scores. No.1 player Eliana Shenk secured a 6-3, 6-3 win against McCaskey and a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Cocalico. Courtney Weaver at No 2, won 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 against McCaskey and won 6-1, 6-1 versus Cocalico. “Our Number 1 and 2 have really continued to carry our team with consistency,” Barons’ coach Kurtis Funk said. “Our 3rd doubles team has really turned the corner as well. They found their groove. Maddie Moyer also won 3rd singles both days this week. Cassie Ginder got a big win at 4 singles as well, she has played in 7 10-point tiebreakers this year, it’s nice to see one go her way.” They also beat Garden Spot 7-0 Friday, Sept. 20. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The Lady Barons had a strong week. They beat Schuylkill Valley 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14). Tori Henderson (seven aces) served well and Maddi Knier (six kills, two blocks) had a solid night hitting out of the middle. “Unfortunately, SV wasn’t very strong,” Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said. “We were able to keep them from running their offense with some solid serving and we covered well on defense.” Henderson added four kills at the net and Emma Moyer had two blocks, and Kalie Zimmerman had four digs. Grace Stoltzfus dished out 14 assists and Eleana Kready added five aces. Central was tested by LampeterStrasburg, Thursday, Sept 19, but

A Day Of Art And Music At Boettcher House Llanso will be among the creations of the nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds, 2369 Lititz Pike, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature the work of local high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show will include jewelry, mixed media pieces, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, ceramics, pottery, and more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and pet-friendly event. Gambone, a self-taught painter who has had a passion for art from an early age, has been painting abstract cityscapes in vivid hues. This year, he also created a sur-
real scene of brightly colored trees with purple trunks behind a red foreground using the paint in a textural manner. Daigle creates her mixed-media artwork using items as varied as buttons, crumbled pieces of material left in a kiln after it fires, wallpaper, and lace. She sometimes uses a board background or creates on canvas with resin poured over the top. “I get all over the place with my imagery,” said Daigle, displaying a piece that uses wallpaper, a pearl necklace, a heart, flowers, and lace. She said she likes to gather a number of items and pull them together to make something beautiful. Artist Lisa Madenspacher found the inspiration for a recent painting of yellow flowers in a drawer - literally. “I was cleaning out, and I found this photo,” explained Madenspacher. “My Russian neighbor
Artists who will exhibit at the Boettcher House grounds on Sept. 28 will include (front, from left) Lisa Madenspacher, Carrie Monique Daigle, (back) Stephen Gambone, Paris Llanso, and Jennifer Cavalcante.

The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Will Rogers Follies” from Thursday, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Nov. 6. Featuring showgirls and cowboys, the show is a breezy and stylish biography of the Oklahoma-born humorist, journalist, and friend of presidents. “Will Rogers Follies” depicts the rags-to-riches story of Will Rogers, who became a multimedia sensation who touched hearts and minds through a weekly radio talk show, newspapers, and movies. During the 1920s and ’30s, Rogers was a regular headliner in Florenz Ziegfeld’s dazzling show “The Follies,” which featured beautiful women in spectacular costumes. This is the style of the Dutch Apple show. Between rope tricks, Rogers will charms the audience with old-fashioned, commonsense wit. For the second time in his career, Michael Santora will portray Rogers. Santora is from New
Orleans and is a graduate of Tulane University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater. Performances will be offered on Tuesday through Sunday
