It’san annual tradition for the Manheim Young Farmers to collect nonperishable items during the Manheim Farm Show, and this year is no exception. The group will collect food for the Manheim Central Food Pantry during the Farm Show parade on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The parade will begin at 7 p.m.

“ We’ll have a tractor pulling a wagon in the parade, and we’ll have some kids from Manheim Central FFA helping to facilitate collecting donations,” said Jonathan Werning, who teaches at Manheim Central High School and is the adviser of the Manheim Young Farmers.

“ We’ll also collect items during the Farm Show week.” The collection area will be set up in the children’s area of the Farm Show.

In addition to the food drive during the week, third-graders in the Manheim Central School District and at Manheim Christian Day School will be given brown paper bags to collect items as part of the

Ag in the Classroom initiative.

“The food drive really helps to keep our shelves stocked with needed items and the ones we often are low in,” said food pantry volunteer Cindy Swisher, noting that soup and canned fruit and vegetables are particularly needed. “We are really grateful for the generosity of the community.”

Participation in the Manheim Young Farmers offers continuing agricultural education after high school, noted Werning. The group hosts service projects such as the f ood drive, attends ag trade shows, tours agriculture sites and holds meetings to help farmers keep up to date on subjects such as pesticide license renewal. It is open to anyone who works in the ag industry.

The Manheim Farm Show will run from Monday, Oct. 3, through Friday, Oct. 7, at 502 Adele Ave. The show has long been a supporter of the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Along with donating to the Manheim Young Farmers’ food

drive, people can purchase livestock during the farm show sale on Oct. 7 and donate the animal to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which will process the meat for distribution at the food pantry. The pantry, located at 334 W. Gramby St., serves as a supplemental food program for residents of the Manheim Central School District.

Additional highlights of the week include crowning of Farm Show royalty on Oct. 3; a pedal tractor pull on Tuesday, Oct. 4; and a benefit auction on Thursday, Oct. 6. The Manheim FFA Children’s Farm Show will run all week and will include educational displays and activities, animal exhibits and more. A complete list of Manheim Farm Show activities may be found at www.manheimfarmshow.org. It is recommended that Farm Show visitors park at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, and take a free shuttle to the White Oak Road walkway through the covered bridge to access the show.

You’re invited to a fall benefit banquet for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a catered meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meal will be prepared by Peters’

BBQ of Manheim, The Country Store of Mount Joy and Amy’s Mixing Bowl of Manheim. The menu will feature homemade oven-baked stuffed chicken breasts with a mashed potato filling, chicken gravy, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, salad, homemade soft dinner rolls with butter, and assorted desserts and drinks.

The Lancaster County 4-H senior livestock judging team members are (from left) Luke Snavely, Eric Zimmerman, Dylan Leed and Zach Bollinger. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 50 N. Main St., Manheim, will host a Fall Fest on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot, rain or shine. Children and their families from the Manheim community are invited to attend. by Teen Central and St. Paul’s UCC, the event will feature fallthemed games, music, crafts, prizes, food and beverages. The menu will include ice cream.

seniors Dylan Leed, Luke Snavely and Eric Zimmerman, along with Cocalico High School junior Zach Bollinger. Dylan, who is the son of Ken and Lori Leed of Lititz, has been a member of 4-H for six years. He placed third overall in the Livestock Judging contest. Luke has been a member of 4-H for eight years and placed fifth overall at the event. He is the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim. Eric, who placed 12th overall, has been a 4-H member for nine years and is the son of Ryan and Tracy Zimmerman of Manheim. A member of 4-H for eight years, Zach is the son of Deb Bollinger of Reinholds and the late Jeff Bollinger. He placed 10th overall in the contest.

As Dani Zurin, one of the volunteer coaches of the team, explained, although the boys competed individually, their scores were combined to determine the champions. The students were scored on how they judged pigs, sheep, goats and beef cattle, comparing how they ranked the animals in relation to rankings from judging officials. “The officials are looking at how the kids placed the livestock,” Dani explained, noting that the students have the opportunity to advocate for their decisions. “They give oral reasonings of why they ranked as they did, and sometimes, they may have made a different decision than the officials, but they still win because they made a good argument for that ranking.”

Dani is joined by her husband, Adam, as a volunteer coach, along with Johanna Rohrer. She noted that winning the state championship was thrilling, but not totally unexpected. “We knew they were a good team,” she said. “They’ve been working toward this for a while.”

The team has been practicing all summer to prepare for its next competitions, she said, which include the Keystone International Livestock Expo in Harrisburg and the Stockman Livestock Judging Contest and Boilermaker Classic in Indiana, both in October. Additionally, the team will compete in November at the National 4-H Livestock Judging

Contest in Louisville, Ky.

Dani noted that with three of the four team members graduating this year, the team is looking to replenish its roster for future competitions.

“We’re always looking for the next group of kids to join us,” she said.

“Anyone can join the livestock judging team if they are a member of a 4-H livestock club in Lancaster County.”

The livestock judging team is looking for financial support for its upcoming competitions. To make a donation or for more information, contact Emily Welk at eaw13@psu.edu.

Losing is never fun but if you are going to lose, take a page from the Manheim Central girls’ volleyball team and lose to an undefeated team. Central dropped their September 15th match opposite undefeated Ephrata, falling by finals of 25-8, 25-20 and 25-20. Addy Doerschuk finished with 14 assists and Maddie Knier three kills, while Kaylee Dougherty collected 24 digs. Knier added eight blocks and Raegan Nissley three aces.

The Lady Barons bounced back on the 19th with a 3-1 win over Gar-

den Spot.

“Our passing allowed us to run our offense,” said head coach Jason Moyer. “Garden Spot did a great job at blocking and keeping the ball off the floor, but we were able to outlast them and minimize unforced errors.

“She did a great job getting a lot of different hitters the ball,” said Moyer of Doerschuk and her 37 assists.

Dougherty led the defense with 22 digs while Aslin Latkovich posted a team high 11 kills and five aces. Knier added nine kills and four blocks in the 25-15, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-10 win.

Central added another victory, this time rebounding from a 25-20 opening game loss to post wins of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-7 securing the 3-1 victory over Solanco. Doerschuk finished with 34 assists with Knier often on the receiving end leading to 26 kills.

GOLF

The golf team took two big steps towards the postsea-

son with matches at Foxchase and Moccasin Run.

Manheim went 32 at Foxchase on the 14th but dropped to 2-3 at Moccasin Run on the 15th, leaving the Barons at 1411 overall with one regular season match remaining. Ryan Snavely posted the top score in both matches, carding an 81 at Foxchase and a 79 at Moccasin Run

FIELD HOCKEY

A typical sign of a winning team is not letting one loss spiral into more. The Manheim Central field hockey team has flashed that trait, winning their own tournament just days after Township handed the Lady Barons their first loss and more recently ripping off three straight wins following the Penn Manor loss.

The first of those wins came on the 14th with Central slipping by Warwick 2-1. Mikayla Appel picked up both goals with Monica Herman setting up the second quarter score and Cali Inthavongsa providing the setup for the game winner in the

third. Laci Nelson finished with eight saves.

Two days later Appel enjoyed another two-goal game, this time leading to a 3-0 win over Ephrata. Loghan Shelly slipped her unassisted score between Appel’s two goals while Nelson finished with zero saves.

Central needed overtime to get by Donegal on the 20th but six Nelson saves coupled with Anna Bosch’s unassisted goal in the extra period secured the win.

TENNIS

With the end of the regular season in sight the Lady Baron tennis team sits undefeated atop the Sec-

tion Two standings. Central pushed their overall record to 12-0 with 7-0 sweeps over Lebanon, Donegal and Cocalico coupled with a 5-2 victory over Exeter Township.

The Lady Barons picked up three of the five wins in singles action against Exeter thanks to Holly Miller, Brianna Mylin and Sydney Peters. Miller and Peters picked up one of the doubles wins while Hailey Kowalski and Brooke Kettler accounted for the other.

Samantha Williams, Miller, Mylin and Peters enjoyed singles wins against both Donegal and Cocalico while Williams, Kowalski, Lauren Huber, and Ava Graff posted the four wins against Lebanon. The doubles tandems of Williams and Mylin along and Miller and Peters were a perfect 3-0 over the stretch while Reagan Wiese and Alaina Bridgeman claimed the final doubles win against Lebanon while Huber and Kowalski teamed up for the last win opposite Cocalico.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Baron cross-country team hit the road for the first of their big Saturday meets on the 17th, taking part in the Ben Bloser Invitational at Big Spring High School. The Lady Barons, buoyed by Reagan Ibach’s medal winning 28th place run, finished 10th in the 16-team AA field

while the boy’s side found themselves 27th in the AAA field.

Jenna Moffett (36th) and Taylor Bruckhart (82nd) backed Ibach while Carter Bruckhart (115th), Carson Brooks (148th) and Caleb Bower (174th) led the boy’s team.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The boys’ soccer team slipped to 2-5-1 overall with losses to Ephrata and Garden Spot coming by a combined 6-0. Central absorbed the 2-0 setback to Ephrata on the 15th and the 4-0 defeat to Spot on the 19th. Wesley Bates collected 10 saves against the Mountaineers and combined with Dylan Smith for three saves against the Spartans.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The Lady Baron soccer team shook off a quick two game slide with back-to-back wins over Hershey and Garden Spot, pushing Central to 6-3 overall.

Before Manheim could shake anything off, they were first dealt a 2-1 setback by Ephrata on the 15th. Abbie Reed, with help from Abby Knapp, put Manheim up early and 10 Lexi Wettig saves held that slim lead until just before the break. A late second half goal by the Lady Mountaineers set the 2-1 final. in Four Sets

The Lady Barons were able to start the rebound on the 17th, topping Hershey 1-0 in overtime. Mikayla Beck setup Emma Myers for the game winner in the 82nd minute with five Wittig saves keeping the game scoreless to setup the OT win.

After resting on Sunday, the Lady Barons were back in action on the 19th, posting a 3-0 win over Garden Spot. Wettig earned the clean sheet with seven saves while three different players found the net with help from a teammate. Abbie Reed got her help from Aubrey Myers to open the scoring and helped closeout the scoring by setting up Ashtyn Kahler. In between Lizzie Voegele fed Kylie Mattiace for a 2-0 halftime lead.

FOOTBALL

The football team closed out their non-league slate in fashion on the 16th, running away from Susquehannock for a 49-0 win. Central took control with a 21-point first quarter burst and ensured the second half would start with a running clock by making it 35-0 at the break. Manheim finished with a 14point third quarter before coasting to the final whistle.

Brycen Armold needed just nine carries to collect 173 yards and two scores, but Zac Hahn was the star, completing seven of eight passes for 210 yards and four TDs. Bode Sipel snagged two of those scores for 25-total yards while Aaron Enterline (1 - 87 yards) and Jaden Weit (1-65 yards) made the most of their lone catches, splitting the remaining two TDs.

Following the meal, a program will take place with guest speakers, personal sharing and special music. This year, a new banquet feature will be themed baskets and experiences to bid on. Basket themes will include Paws & Claws - Pet Lovers Basket, Italian Amore Basket, Sweet Treats & Sugar Baked Basket, PA Dutch Basket, Spanish Fiesta Basket, Hunter’s Necessity Basket, Spa Basket, Outdoors Basket and Coffee Lovers Basket. Larger items will include a new wood-burning outdoor fire pit, passes to local entertainment venues and attractions and a sterling silver Charles Krypell pearl filigree bead necklace. Additionally, the fundraiser will include an option to bid on catered meals that will be offered in homes of those with a personal connection to Mt. Hope.

Proceeds from the banquet will help Mt. Hope continue providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay. “The mission of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement, noting that the banquet will mark the first time a large group of Mt. Hope supporters has been together in person since June of 2019. “People attending the banquet will be simply amazed at everything Mt. Hope accomplished since the summer of 2019,” she stated. “I love the stories, and by sharing our stories, you realize you are not alone on the pathways of life, and you can see how unique and what a special niche Mt. Hope fills in our area.”

Located in Manheim, Mt. Hope provides skilled nursing and rehabilitative care in a 50-bed facility for lowerincome seniors and people with disabilities. “Mt. Hope gives over $1 million in charitable care every year, a feat made possible by the great amount of support from our local community,” Wilson noted. “Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost of their care or benevolent care is a growing need.”

To make a reservation for the banquet, contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org. Opportunities for event or table sponsorships are available for a donation. The cost to attend the banquet is free for individuals, with the opportunity to contribute financially at the event. The deadline to make reservations is Saturday, Oct. 15.

Book Discussions

Planned

Upcoming programs in the Exploring Growing Together discussion series have been announced. The programs will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St., in Room 103 on the lower level. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch to enjoy during the discussions.

Rosalie Custer will lead discussions of “When the World Came to Town” by Jim DeFede on Oct. 6 and 13 and “Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty” by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe on Oct. 20 and 27. “When the World Came to Town” recounts the events of 9/11 in Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. When U.S. airspace was closed, 38 jetliners bound for the United States were redirected to Gander International Airport. “Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty” tells the story of the Vanderbilt family, whose fortune was initially made through Cornelius Vanderbilt’s business activities in shipping and railroads.

On Nov. 3 and 10, Shanna Boley will lead discussions of James McBride’s memoir, “The Color of Water.” The book tells the story of McBride and his white, Jewish mother, Ruth.

No meetings will be held in December.

The forum learning series aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs. Contact Linda at 717626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net for more information.
