Forgotten Friend To Offer Virtual Reptile Shows

“There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire.” The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing

any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in See Camping pg 5

So You Want To Start A Blog BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going.

he pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as

10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County.

Rothacker sees benefits in the change. “We don’t usually bring venomous lizards, but now that we’re doing it virtually, (students) can be up close to the nose of a Gila monster and actually see the beady texture of their skin without liability or concern for the schools or teachers.”

“I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself,” McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it.” During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests.

Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets,” she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy.” There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger,” she said. “It’s a lot of

Instagram stories and posts that people connect with.” Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog),” she explained. “The email list (of your subscribers) is yours.” Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations - are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a caseby-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook

Kathy McClure

and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away,” McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.”

Forgotten Friend from pg 1 organization instituted the Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary Scholarship Fund in 2019. Rothacker reported that the fund was initiated by grants from Refreshing Mountain Camp and Ephrata National Bank. Rothacker explained that as a nonprofit that serves nonprofits, the scholarship fund could benefit organizations such as schools, churches, and scouting groups, for which the up to $400 pricetag of a Forgotten Friends program could be an

issue. “We aren’t $1,000, but we aren’t $50,” said Rothacker, who noted that the main revenue source for the rescue is programming. “We have so many good groups that want to host our programs,” he said. Rothacker has a particular interest in how virtual reptile programs can help schools fulfill environmental science curriculums. “ We wanted scholarship funds available because so many of the schools are trying to figure out day to day,” he said. “We

want to alleviate some costs by offering free or discounted programs through our scholarship fund.” Rothacker explained that partial scholarships could lower the cost of a program significantly. According to Rothacker, virtual shows are similar to live shows, but they offer an additional multimedia presentation. Different programs are developed for high school and college-age students. “I take a program and present it differently to each audience,” said Rothacker. “With elementary or preschool, it is heavier on interactive hand motions and repeating words.” For older students, Rothacker may tackle weightier subjects. The saga Rothacker calls “Our Virtual Journey” began when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions in March. “May through September is our main season for programs,” said Rothacker, who noted that of 200 yearly shows, about 150 occur in spring and summer. “Our season was crushed,” he said. The situation sent Rothacker on a mission to

provide contact-free safe options that will give the schools some of the tools they need for environmental science supplements that include classroom visitors. Rothacker was initially hesitant to go virtual, but he moved forward, investing in lighting, a greenscreen, and other electronic equipment, and he soon began to recognize the power of virtual presentations. “With alligators, they have more than a thousand sensory organs that look like little black dots on their faces and tongues,” he said. “In person, the closest our audience gets is about 6 feet, but (virtually) when we do a closeup, they can see the little black dots.” Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reptile rescue and education group that has been based in Lancaster County since 2004. Inishbofin” was featured in the August issue of Lancaster County Magazine. Weachter was born and raised in West Willow and moved to Manheim in 2012. As a child, she always loved art and grew up with the intent of attending art school. Instead, she pursued other activities, including raising her children. She returned to art after the loss of both her parents and her spouse in 2011 and 2012. She attended a paint night in 2015, where she used acrylics for the first time. This experience reignited her interest in art, and she continued to learn by attending more paint nights and viewing art tutorials online. She found that painting helped her to deal with her grief. For “Animals of the Rainbow,” Weachter focused on joyful, colorful animals. She said she was inspired by the Bible story of Noah’s ark.

Sheetz recently announced that Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven charity supporting underprivileged children, raised a record-setting $839,460 during its annual month of in-store fundraising in July. This is an increase of $205,391 from last year’s donation. The current pandemic has created a coin shortage in the U.S., which has directly impacted Sheetz. As a result, during July customers had the option to donate the extra change that they would normally receive on a transaction to Sheetz For the Kidz. Each Sheetz store then rang these donations through the register and directed them to the charity.

Manheim Tennis Team Posts Three Win Week BY ERIC G. STARK

The Manheim Central girls’ tennis team is on quite a roll. With a 5-1 record and its only loss coming against LampeterStrasburg, the Barons earned three wins last week in dominating fashion. They beat Solanco Monday, Sept. 21 and Cedar Crest Wednesday, Sept. 23 by 7-0 scores and Cocalico Friday, Sept. 25 by a 6-1 score. Senior Eliana Shenk dominated in 6-2, 6-2 win against Cedar Crest and 6-1, 6-0 against the Eagles. Senior Cassie Ginder posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 triumph against CC and 6-4, 6-2 against Cocalico. Sophomore Holly Miller won 6-0,

6-0 against the Falcons and 7-3, 7-6 (7-1) against the Eagles. Shenk and sophomore Brianna Mylin have been unstoppable at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0 and 8-1, respectively against CC and Cocalico. Miller and Ginder have been outstanding at second doubles, winning 8-2 (CC) and 9-7 (Cocalico). “The team is doing very well in doubles,” head coach Kurtis Funk said. “We often start 3-0 in doubles before we start singles action.” GOLF The golf team wrapped up its season at the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament at Media Heights Golf Course. 110 strokes from the beginning of the season to the final match, head coach Connor Sheehan pointed out. “Overall nerves and a lack of experience was a factor in our scoring,” Sheehan added. Senior Wyatt Becker shot a 107 at the league tourney. Emma Kensey, in her first year, posted a 127. Freshman Cayden Schwebel shot a 128. CROSS COUNTRY The Lady Baron harrier took four of the top five spots in a 1944 win over Northern Lebanon and 15-50 triumph over Lancaster Mennonite last Thursday. Freshman Julie Lindberg (21:34) earned her first win in a varsity meet, and freshman Savannah Semple (22:32) finished third overall. Jenna Moffett (23:15) was fourth and Alaina Bruckhart (23:46) placed fifth. Coach Ryan Kennedy said the team exceeded his expectations. For the boys, Brady Knier (18:08) earned his first varsity meet first place finish. The Barons beat Lancaster Mennonite 15-50, but lost to Northern Lebanon, 24-34. Kennedy said NL was just better than his squad, but overall, it was a solid start. Ezekiel Ruffner (18:44) placed fifth overall, Bailey Garman (18:56) was sixth. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Barons beat Ephrata, 3-2, Thursday, Sept. 24. MC was up 2-0 at halftime on goals by Summer Bates and Emma Myers. Ephrata got one back to make it 2-1 and the Baron’s Hannah Adair made it 3-1 shortly after that. The Mountaineers got a second goal with about four minutes left to make it a tight ending. “I was really happy with the way we played,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “Their (Ephrata) two goals came on long through balls, but we controlled a lot of the play and cre-

ated some really good scoring opportunities.” Stoltzfus said a lot of players got their first meaningful varsity minutes and looked comfortable at this level and he’s excited to see how his young team continues to come together this season. The Barons (1-1) lost a heartbreaker against Hempfield, 1-0, on Saturday giving up a goal with 6.6 left in regulation. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons dropped two close games last week, losing to Ephrata and Oley Valley, two of the tougher teams Manheim (0-2) will play all season. OV won the Berks County title last year. Playing in a steady mist Saturday, Nathan Reed cashed in on a penalty kick, after a foul in the box late in the game by the OV goalie. Against the Mountaineers on Thursday, freshman Gabe Redcay took a beautiful feed from Reed inside the 18-yard line and trickled his shot past the Mounts’ goalie to tie the game at 1-1. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime. Ephrata scored the go-ahead goal with about nine minutes remaining. “The score is not a good indicator of how strong we are,” head coach Rod Brenize said. “The record does show how good we are. ...The kids are resilient.” VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot beat Manheim 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16 Thursday. The Spartans served well and defensively didn’t allow the Barons to get in a rhythm, head coach Jason Moyer said. “When we did pass well we did compete with them,” Moyer said. “We just didn’t do it enough to be competitive.” Madison Knier had six kills, two blocks and two aces and Emma Moyer had four digs and two kills. Grace Stoltzfus added two blocks and Mackenzie Ginder collected a serving ace.

FIELD HOCKEY Manheim lost 3-2 to Ephrata on Saturday. Jenna Lutz and Kylie Kroesen found the back of the cage for the Baron (0-2). “We have a very young team that is still working out the kinks and understanding what their roles are,” said head coach Morgan Briggs, whose team lost 5-0 to Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday. “The more experience this team gets will pay off in the long run.” FOOTBALL Dave Hahn said his team’s senses were heightened after the Barons suffered a 35-19 loss to Cocalico last Friday. Logan Shull hit two field goals of 37 and 27 yards to cut into Cocalico’s 14-0 lead. MC fought back in the third quarter, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 21-13, after defensive back Mason Weaver recovered a fumble and dashed 18 yards for the score. Quarterback Judd Novak threw a 34-yard TD pass to Owen Sensenig, but that was the end of the Barons’ scoring. The loss snapped a sixgame win streak against

Cocalico and a 23-game win streak in Section Two. “We’ve had bumps in the road before. You have to learn from them,” Hahn said. “Losses stink, but they are opportunities to learn much more than you probably do from a win. You win a game and tend to take that and enjoy the victory and look at the positives all the time. When you lose, you really point out those bad plays, those negatives and you really focus on attention to detail and getting those things better.”

Barons Holly Miller (top photo) and Cassie Ginder (bottom photo) paired up at number two doubles to defeat Solanco’s Perla Miller and Sidney Beger, 8-3, to add a point to Manheim’s 7-0, Section Two win at home last Monday.
