Candace Abel started making her own soaps and lotions when she was on a quest to find healthier products to use for her youngest son, who has a critical form of a blood disorder known as thalassemia, which requires intensive medication and gene therapy for survival. “I thought, ‘If we can put better things on the table, then we can put better things on our bodies, too,’” recalled Candace. Candace’s use of goat’s milk and oils to create soaps and lotions with an artistic flair caught the attention of family and friends, who asked her to See Girl Crush Company pg 2

August of 2017, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me” shared the family’s journey and opened a national conversation about Alzheimer’s. Determined to help other families on the same journey, Kim founded CareLiving.org to encourage caregivers to take care of themselves and to improve the quality of life of families living with dementia through education, advocacy and real-world change. Moravian Manor will present its 2019 Engaging Community Dinner on Monday, Oct. 14, at Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, titled “An Evening With Kim Campbell: My Family’s Journey With Alzheimer’s,” will begin with a private reception at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 8 p.m. Kim was married to country and pop musician Glen Campbell for 34 years until Glen’s death in

make the products for them to use and then placed even more orders for things like party and wedding favors. In 2018, Candace decided to turn her hobby into something more and established Girl Crush Company as a limited liability company (LLC). Girl Crush Company is a member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild and uses organic, responsibly sourced oils and goat’s milk or honey from local suppliers. The products, which range from eye-catching unicorn swirled soaps to whimsical hand soaps with scents like heirloom tomato and oatmeal and honey, contain ethically sourced colors and fragrances. Using responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients is important to Candace, as it means no animal testing and no child labor have played a role in any of the products, which are all made in Girl Crush Company’s soap studio in Mount Joy. Now Girl Crush Company is in the process of becoming a social enterprise in order to use its profits to educate, employ, and empower at-risk single mothers in the local area. “The goal is much bigger than creating soaps,” Candace emphasized. “We want to make our footprint healthy in the ingredients that go into everything but also as a social enterprise, and what a social enterprise strives to do is use a lot of its profits for an intended good.” A portion of the profits from Girl Crush Company’s sales of products, which are available to purchase at www.girlcrushco.com and at local events, will be used to establish a mentoring program for at-risk single moms. When volunteering with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that allows trained community members to be appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in foster care, Candace could not stop thinking about the lack of support the single moms had in and out of the courtroom. After many conversations lamenting the need for more resources for single moms, someone challenged Candace to do something about it - and now she is. “What I’d like to offer these women is the assurance they are not alone,” said Candace. The company is a reflection of Candace’s heart for helping others - something she is no stranger to doing. She founded Elizabethtown-based

nonprofit Brittany’s Hope in memory of her daughter, Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany’s Hope focuses on aiding and facilitating the adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Candace and her daughter-inlaw, Jackie Abel, who also works for Girl Crush Company, are in the planning stages of launching a two-year pilot program where compliant single moms would be assigned a trained mentor mom. “(The mentor’s) job will really be to offer as much love as possible during the process,” explained Candace. Beyond oneon-one mentoring, she envisions a community piece with a weekly meeting time for single moms to spend time together. “People need that connection, the opportunity to build relationships and to see a model of someone living a better way even though it may not be easier,” Candace continued.

established the Kim and Glen Campbell Foundation to promote the use of music to improve physical and mental health and thereby supplement or reduce the need for pharmacological interventions. Among her many accolades, Kim recently received the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation’s Great Ladies Award, the Us Against Alzheimer’s Women Making Change Award, and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Caregiver Leadership Award.

To register for the dinner, readers may visit www.moravian manor.org.

Girl Crush Company, along with other LLCs still to be determined or developed as part of the future model for the program, would also offer employment and skill set development opportunities for the single moms. A board of directors will oversee the LLCs and mentoring program, with the goal of providing

a holistic approach in supporting local, at-risk single moms and practically equipping and empowering them to move forward. “I believe we need to offer a holistic approach that (each mom) had a hand in creating,” added Candace. To learn more, readers may visit www.girlcrushco.com.

Sweet Pea Project from pg 1 The community - including bereaved families, their friends, neighbors, co-workers, medical staff, and anyone who has had their lives touched by loss - is invited to the event. Families may write short messages to their children on candles and float the candles down the flower-lined stream. Bobbi Carmitchell will provide musical accompaniment as each child’s name is read. Founder Stephanie Cole, whose daughter Madeline would approach her 13th birthday this

winter, wanted to add a special element in honor of the event’s 10th year. Cole decided to incorporate wind chimes - one for each family that has lost a child or children. Thanks to a donation, bereaved parents will be able to take a wind chime home with them. Parents may come to the pavilion following the event to pick up their wind chime. Only one wind chime will be given to each family, even if that family has suffered multiple losses. Wind chimes are for parents only, because of limited supply.

Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) held the kickoff rally for its 33rd annual Trash-A-Thon on Sept. 4. Trash-A-Thon, which will occur on Thursday, Oct. 10, is an annual community service project and fundraiser in which students in kindergarten through high school, accompanied by family members and faculty, pick up trash and litter in parks and along roadways throughout Lancaster County. Trash-A-Thon allows students to fulfill two of LAMS’ core values, commitment to the community and serving, by collecting about two tons of trash in one day. It also helps the school to raise funds to meet its annual operating budget, with this year’s Trash-A-Thon goal set at $145,000. In addition to carrying trash bags, donning gloves and wearing bright orange vests or T-shirts designed with visibility and safety in mind, this year, the students will help to educate the community on “The Big 4, the theme of this year’s Trash-A-Thon. The Big 4 is part of the Recycle Right Lancaster

program from the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) to help Lancaster County residents understand what is now acceptable for recycling and what should be thrown into the trash. The Big 4 categories of recyclable items are plastic bottles and jugs with necks, metal food and beverage cans, glass jars and bottles, and corrugated cardboard. Attempting to recycle other items through LCSWMA negatively impacts the waste management service’s efforts. 1425 W. Main St., Mount Joy 717-653-1833 ext. 2203

The Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has posted its upcoming schedule. Readers may visit www.manheimsportsmansassoc.org for information on all club activities. Deer hunters using crossbows are reminded that the club’s new crossbow practice area is complete with targets located at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards. The club will sell cheesesteak sandwiches and beverages at the Manheim Farm Show, set for Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11. The club’s stand will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each

day. Proceeds will support several youth programs and activities throughout the year, including the Boy Scouts’ Field Day, Hunter-Trapper Education classes, a children’s fishing derby on Memorial Day, and sponsorship of up to three students for a weeklong youth conservation camp held in July. The monthly coffee and snack hour for retirees and seniors will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14. Visitors are welcome. The group meets on the second Monday of each month. For more information, readers may call

717-951-6103. Due to the Farm Show week, the club’s monthly membership meeting will take place one week late on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. New members are always welcome, and membership renewals will be accepted throughout the remainder of the year as well. For information or an application, readers may contact the membership secretary at 717-665-7729 or visit the website. On Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., the indoor range is open for handgun practice. The club has a range safety officer and a

qualified instructor on-site to assist shooters and control all shooting. For more information, readers may call Allan at 717-653-9979. Trap shooting practice, open to the public, takes place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Practice will be closed after the session on Saturday, Oct. 26, through March 2019. For more information, readers may call Steve at 717-917-3174. The association reminds readers that there will be a group of members qualified to

archery deer hunt on the club property starting Saturday, Oct. 5. The group will be off the club’s property before the outdoor ranges open at 10 a.m. Additionally, each Monday and Tuesday during all Pennsylvania archery seasons, Pennsylvania archery hunters will be allowed to hunt starting at 3 p.m. until the end of the daily hunter hours, meaning that all outdoor ranges will be closed a few hours early only these two days. Individuals are asked to follow posted signs as they enter the property, including signs posted on all the ranges.

Lady Baron Booters Edge Bears in Overtime by Eric G. Stark

Manheim beat E-town 3-2 in overtime on Monday, Sept. 23. The Bears opened the scoring and held a 1-0 lead at intermission. The Barons fought back with two goals in the second half by Isabella Wendler and Hannah Adair, who added an assist. Makenna Copley blasted in the game winner at the 85:41 mark. MC out-shot 9 to 8 and out-cornered E-town 4 to 3. Goalie Mia Reed had six saves for the Barons. “We did a good job battling back from a goal down twice,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “We worked hard to set up good opportunities to get our goals and took our chances well.” The Barons suffered a tough loss

three days later to L-S, which scored in the first five minutes of the game and held on for a 1-0 triumph on Thursday, Sept. 26. Central had four corners and five shots in the game. Reed stopped three shots. “The loss certainly puts Ephrata in the drivers’ seat in the section and makes Monday (Sept. 30) a very important game,” Stoltzfus said. “We gave up another early goal, which puts so much pressure on our offense as the other team can just sit back and defend. “We’re trying to figure out how to correct the slow starts. As long as we’ve got the answer by the time playoffs roll around we’ll be fine.” Central ended the week with a 2-0 nonleague loss to Hempfield on

Saturday, Sept. 28. “We played much better defensively but caught some bad luck,” Stoltzfus said. “A missed handball call led to the first goal. We picked up a few injuries during the game and hit the post towards the end, too.” FOOTBALL Instead of picking an easy opponent for Homecoming, Manheim Central officials went for the big crowd and alumni back on campus for the Barons’ clash against Cocalico, who lost twice last season to Manheim, including the District Three championship. The two rival schools locked in an epic battle Friday, Sept. 27. The Barons came out victorious in a back-and-forth Lancaster-Lebanon

League Section Two clash with the Eagles, 46-43. Cocalico’s last-second pass fell incomplete to end the game. The win reaffirmed something Barons’ coach Dave Hahn already knew. “We’re not quitters,” he said. “We are resilient, but we still have work to do and room to improve.” Hahn said the fact that his squad has battled while facing a number of good teams this year and didn’t give up says a lot about his team. He said he wished his club would have finished the game better against Cocalico by running out the clock, but the Barons lost a running back - Jake Harbach because of injury and couldn’t go with their two-back sets. Instead, quarterback Evan Simon had to run the ball and he went out of bounds on a few plays, stopping the

clock, instead of making Cocalico use its timeouts. They’ll correct these mistakes, Hahn said, adding that he’s glad the teachable moment came after a win. Manheim jumped out to an early lead when Simon connected with wide receiver Ben Wagner on the left sideline for a 56-yard touchdown, just two minutes into the game. Cocalico ran the kickoff after the score back for a 98-yard touchdown. “We’ve been beat three times on kickoffs this year,” Hahn said, “and that doesn’t happen in Manheim.” In a good team win, Hahn noted that Simon led the squad in tackles six solo and five assisted - and has done “a heck of a job for us at safety.” He also led the offense with 385 total yards, passing for 280. Simon was involved with five of the Barons’ six touchdowns.

Hahn also said that Charlie Sipel filled in at long snapper after an injury and snapped well on a field goal and punt. “He saved us,” the coach said. “That could have been disastrous. I’m proud of him.” Other individuals receiving praise from their coach included Harbach, who made several big tackles on defense. Troy Kolk played well on both lines of scrimmage and Ben and Colby Wagner and the rest of the receiving group had a big night. Things do not get any easier for the Barons (2-0 section, 4-2 overall) as they travel to Lampeter-Strasburg Friday, Oct. 4. “They have talented skilled position players and are very skilled on offense,” Hahn said. “They run a spread Wing-T with a lot of misdirection. We’ll have to be disciplined.

coach Charlie Fisher said. “I was very happy with Gage. He battled back after a slow start to give himself a chance of making the cut.” Fisher said that McCabe told him that he hit the ball well and outside of three holes was very consistent. Fellow seniors Dylan Groff and Scott Westfield both shot 107 to end their high school careers. “It was great having all three of these guys on the team for three years,” Fisher said. GIRLS’ TENNIS The Barons defeated Lancaster Mennonite 3-1 in the L-L League team tournament Friday at Ephrata High School. The win advanced the Barons to the league semifinals Monday. Teams play a 3-2 format for the playoffs. Manheim coach Kurtis Funk said he

6-2, 6-2 win. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Section Two foe L-S, and got a little revenge for an earlier loss to the Pioneers in the process. The Sept. 25 clash featured all three goals being scored in the first half. L-S scored at the 25-minute mark to break a scoreless tie, but four minutes later Nate Reed scored the equalizer. Andrew Donmoyer nailed the gamewinner at the 38-minute mark. After that, Central’s defense got stingy. Goalie Dylan Smith had two saves. Central finished with seven corners and three shots and defensively held the Pioneers to five corners and three shots. On Monday Sept. 23 the Barons lost 3-1 to E-town. The teams were tied at 11 at halftime. The Bears scored two late goals to put the game away. Reed scored the lone goal for the Barons. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Manheim held off Cocalico 3-2 Tuesday, Sept. 24. After losing the first game 20-25, the Barons battled back to win the second and third

games 25-15 and 25-23. With their backs against the wall, the Eagles beat MC, 25-21. In the fifth and deciding game, the Barons pulled away for a 15-10 victory. Grace Stoltzfus had seven aces and 25 assists. At net, Emma Moyer added 9 kills and Maddie Knier notched six blocks. Tori Henderson and Amber Kauffman both had seven digs. After that tough match, the Lady Barons cruised past Solanco in three games on Thursday, Sept. 26. MC won 25-18, 25-14 and 25-16. Moyer had 6 aces. Henderson and Knier had nine and seven kills,

respectively. Henderson added five digs and Stoltzfus dished out 24 assists. Knier added three blocks. “We came out really strong in the first game and passed really well,” head coach Jason Moyer said. “That, combined with some changes we made to our attacking, really set the tone for the game. We were able to put together several service runs, which allowed us to pull away and control the pace of the game.” Moyer said Knier, a freshman, has really improved with each swing at the ball she takes, and he is impressed with how quickly she has improved her game.

Junior Achievement Seeks Volunteers Junior Achievement is seeking volunteers for its programs. Junior Achievement is a worldwide nonprofit organization that presents life skills through hands-on educational materials focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness. Junior Achievement projects it will reach more than 100,000 students this school year, which will require more than 8,000 volunteers. The organization’s programs are as follows. REAL Life is a daylong program designed for students in 11th or 12th grade. Held at local high schools, REAL Life consists of a series of activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for good financial decision-making. Five sessions are held throughout the day. STEM Summit is a daylong program held at local high schools for ninth- or 10thgrade students. This program includes nine 30-minute sessions that include science experiments, technology, engi-

neering, math competitions and trades modules. Volunteers will seek to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Each volunteer will work with nine different groups of students throughout the event. YES! (Your Economic Success) is a half-day morning program held at middle schools. All students in the building participate in the program at the same time. It consists of a series of activities intended to help students realize the importance of financial and career decisions. Each volunteer leads one activity with four different groups of students. At JA BizTown, fifth- and sixth-grade students become JA BizTown “citizens” for a day. The students work in one of 14 businesses, manage their personal and business finances, develop and sell products, hold business meetings, pay taxes and donate to charities. Business and com-

munity volunteers assist the students. Junior Achievement offer classroom programs consisting of five sessions, each 30 to 55 minutes in length. Volunteers lead the pre-written, activitybased sessions, which introduce students to topics such as wants versus needs and how to write a check. Students also learn about career options. The Symposiums are oneday workshops of mentoring, motivation and opportunities for high school sophomores and juniors who are nominated by their schools. A typical Symposium includes presentations and speakers, mentoring sessions and activities designed to help students gain personal and career success skills. Students explore a variety of opportunities available to them after high school. To sign up for an event or for more information, readers may contact Lisa Vaughn, volunteer engagement manager, at lvaughn@jascpa.org or 717843-8028.

“Defensively, they put six (players) in the box and put pressure on and move guys around. In the secondary they play man-to-man. We’ve got to work on that this week.” FIELD HOCKEY The Lady Barons suffered a 1-0 loss to Donegal on Thursday Sept. 26. The Indians avenged a 4-1 Sept. 5 loss to the Barons by jumping on the scoreboard early and playing strong defense to hold off Manheim’s attack. “We had a slow start and could not recover from Donegal’s quick attack,” head coach Morgan Briggs said. “They put a goal away in the first half and we couldn’t match their offensive drive.” Donegal’s goal at 29:49 in the first proved to be enough. The Indians held an edge in corners 11 to 8 and shots 14 to 6. Manheim started the week with a 3-0 shutout of Garden Spot on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Central held a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by senior Maddy Barbush, who scored 2:15 into the game. Junior Jenna Lutz and senior Lily Sipel found the back of the cages in the second half. Barbush, Sipel and Lexi Hosler earned assists. Goalie Mikayla Regan had four saves, and was aided by a strong defense in front of her to keep the Spartans off the score board. “The girls played hard, smart and together,” Briggs said. “We had some beautiful passing sequences all over the field. Lily Sipel played an excellent game and used her stick skills to maneuver around defenders and get many shots off, including a goal. “We were pleased to get the shutout and we credit our goalkeeper, Mikayla Regan and defenders, Maddy Barbush, Cami Lehman and Samina Kheuangthirath with the stingy defense.” GOLF The Barons’ golf season came to an end in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Tournament Monday, Sept. 23 at Foxchase Golf Club. Manheim had three participants in the tourney. Gage McCabe, who earlier this season shot an 85, posted an impressive 87. He finished three strokes shy of the qualifying mark for districts. “It was a great round by him, 13 strokes better than his average,” head

knew it would be close with the Blazers. He said Barons’ No.1 seed Eliana Shenk played great in gaining a 6-2, 6-1 triumph. His No.1 doubles team of Brianna Mylin and Cassie Ginder played very consistent and won 6-2, 6-0. His No. 2 doubles team of Kami Groff and Abbi Martin also won and earned the Barons their third point for the team win. “They played really well at every position,” Funk said. “It was a total team win. We have gotten a lot better as the season has gone along and it was cool to see that add up to a playoff win.” Earlier in the week, Central held off Elizabethtown for a 4-3 victory on Monday, Sept. 23. Maddie Moyer and Ginder won in singles, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively. Doubles teams of Shenk and Courtney Weaver (9-7) and Moyer and Camryn Burkholder (8-5) and Groff and Martin (8-3) came up big to secure the team victory. The girls lost 4-1 to Wilson in a nonleague contest on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Groff and Martin in doubles secured the Barons’ lone point in a

Opening receptions will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. during October and November First Fridays, Oct. 4 and Nov. 1. Rudolph’s work is predominately abstract, created in oils on Masonite with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by the New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey galleries.
