The 2018 Farm Show is set for Monday, Oct. 8, through Friday, Oct. 12, and the parade will step off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Parking and admission are free. DSAA To Host Sober Spooktacular A Maze Of Fun In The Fields Of Penryn Jerusalem Church Plans Oct. 13 Event

By Chelsea Peifer

As Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) chairman Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado brainstormed ideas and researched potential options for speakers at the organization’s upcoming fundraising dinner, they hoped to find someone from outside the local area whom people had not heard from before. When someone suggested Brandon Novak, a well-known skateboarder and MTV celebrity with a powerful testimony and commitment to the recovery community, Emminger immediately began pursuing the possibility and was thrilled when he agreed to travel to Mount Joy to share his story. Novak will speak at the DSAA Sober Spooktacular, which is set to take place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The public is invited to attend and enjoy an evening of spooky-themed

festivities. “Part of our goal is to raise awareness, and we also wanted to make it fun so that’s why we went with Halloween,” Emminger noted. Costumes are optional but certainly welcome. “We will be dressing up, so we hope everyone else will too,” said Emminger.

For the fifth consecutive year, a team of volunteers from Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim, has designed and created a corn maze. The community is invited to explore the corn maze at the church’s Disguise and Prize event on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. The free event is open to children and families. Disguise and Prize is a fall activity that allows children in costume to walk around to different decorated vehicles in the church parking lot to receive small prizes such as candy, stickers, and toys. Activity stations with various games and crafts will be set up in the parking lot. Free refreshments will also be available.

The Sober Spooktacular will kick off with a social hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Memory Laps(e), a southcentral Pennsylvania-based band that specializes in psychedelic party music, playing both covers and original songs. A photo booth will be on hand, and ghoulish games are also planned. A silent auction will offer a variety of items and experiences for folks to browse and bid on throughout the evening, including designer purses, a lithograph print autographed by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, gift cards, themed baskets, and more. Winners will be announced at the close of the evening. At 6 p.m., a buffet-style dinner complete with beef, chicken, vegetarian, and gluten-free entrée options will be served, followed by a dessert buffet. Novak will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Born in Baltimore,

Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bam” and “Bam’s Unholy Union” starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and co-author Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,” a book based on Novak’s life and experiences with heroin in Baltimore. He now travels the country as an addiction and recovery speaker for Banyan Treatment Center in order to raise awareness and help addicts find the treatment that they need. To purchase tickets to the Sober Spooktacular, interested individuals may visit http://dsasquared.org or stop in at DSAA, 15 W. Main St., Mount Joy. DSAA hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

Proceeds from the event will support the operating costs of DSAA as it continues to fulfill its mission to bring awareness to the community on heroin and opiate abuse. The organization’s mission, according to its website, is also to educate the community that heroin and opiate addiction is a treatable disease and to provide support to families affected by addiction and to individuals in recovery. DSAA recently celebrated one year in its current offices, and Emminger said the organization is looking for an even larger space to facilitate events it hosts, such as family support groups and educational trainings. This fall, DSAA will be adding a Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meeting to its list of supportive approaches to addiction services. For more details on DSAA, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-492-4596.

Jerusalem Church from pg 1 and provided confirmation that everything was straight. This year’s maze has one fewer letter than last year’s creation, which spelled out “Amazing Grace.” Angela shared that the message of the maze, “Christ Alone,” coincides with the mission of the church, which is “to lead people to find their greatest joy and pleasure in Jesus Christ above all things to the glory and worship of God.” Bible verses such as Romans 8:38-39 and Acts 4:12, along with the popular hymn “In Christ Alone,” also played a role in the church members settling upon the “Christ Alone” phrase. “Our mission is to draw attention to Jesus Christ and to make His name famous,” continued Angela. “True and lasting joy and pleasure cannot be found outside of union with Him. Our goal is to proclaim Christ in such a way that people can respond to the Gospel and be united to Christ by

faith and therein find superlative and eternal gladness in God.” Organizers estimate that approximately 235 people attended last year’s Disguise and Prize event, with many folks lingering longer than in past years to relax outside and take a few extra turns in the maze. Angela said that although the event is geared toward children, people of all ages have enjoyed taking a trip through the corn maze. “ We love hosting the Disguise and Prize event,” commented Angela. “The vision of Jerusalem Church is to transform our community with the Gospel, (and) we feel Disguise and Prize allows us to do this in a unique way.” In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14. The intense heat and heavy rainfall this summer caused the corn to grow extremely tall very fast, volunteer Angela Havice said. By the time the group of volunteers cut the maze during the second week of July, the corn was already more than six feet tall in some spots. “We are fortunate that the corn field drains well due to the type of soil,” noted Angela. “The field is on a slight hill, so the water runs down the hill. Quite simply, the corn is very tall this year, and we are fortunate that it is not muddy.” Gene Saylor created the blueprint for the maze, with Ray Gruber, Kevin Havice, and Chad Eberly assisting with the letter placement with tape measures, strings, and flags for the “Christ Alone” design. Trent Martin and Mary Gruber completed the bulk of the cutting, and additional volunteers held flags and tape measures

I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth. When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up. I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to ďŹ nd our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world. It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind. Anyone can download a free copy of the book Reections on Our Holy Holidays by Lloyd Elias Scalyer. You may choose a pdf ďŹ le, an ePUB ďŹ le compatible with most eBook readers, or both. Instructions to do this are as follows: Go to the homepage of the website for Lititz Institute, www.lititzinstitute.org. On the homepage there is a rotating picture at the top of the page. The second picture which comes up is one of the book and the caption “Discover the Great Feasts of our Jewish Heritage.â€? Click on the lower right corner of this picture for a free download. Depending on your Internet speed loading the second page is variable, but in most cases the picture changes several times a minute. After clicking, you will come to a page with a copy of the book and a heading “Free EBook.â€? Immediately below this is the option to downlod the book. If you choose the pdf ďŹ le, note the ďŹ rst two pages are blank; and there is no cover. If you have problems or questions, contact Lititz Institute by e-mail via the website.

With the exception of a few laps walked by Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) canines, dogs are not allowed to take part in Relay For Life events. But some Relay For Life team members wanted to hold an event where dogs could be featured. “Relay For Life (fundraisers are typically held) at a high school, and you can’t take your dog, lamented Angie Woolf, a member of the Misfit Bankers team. “But more often than not, a dog is someone’s caregiver. (Dogs) comfort you whether you have a cold or cancer.

To celebrate the important bond between humans and pets, especially during illness, Woolf has organized American Cancer Society Bark For Life events for the past several years. The 2018 Bark For Life of Lancaster will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. The event honors the lifelong contributions of canines to cancer survivors. Bark For Life came to Lancaster six years ago when the Captain Morgan Relay For Life team held the first event. When the Relay For Life Leadership Team took charge of the event, other Relay For Life teams began to participate. Bark For Life supports the

for a home, how to make an offer, what is involved in getting a mortgage and closing a loan, and what to expect after the purchase. Registration is required. PJ Story Time has been set for Friday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m. Attendees can wear their favorite pajamas and bring a stuffed animal to the program, which will be led by Ms. Colleen. Full STEAM Ahead, for teenagers age 13 and up, will take place at noon on Oct. 20. The program will be Animation Studio Shorts presented by Snapology of Lancaster. Students will work in teams with guidance to make a digital movie short using stop-motion techniques. Videos will be uploaded to Snapology’s YouTube channel. The deadline to register is noon on Oct. 18, and individuals may also call the library to check availablilty for last-minute registration. Smart Baseball with Keith Law, a senior baseball writer for ESPN and an analyst for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, will take place on Monday, Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. He will discuss baseball before the start of the World Series, and he will sign copies of his book, “Smart Baseball, afterward. A limited number of copies will be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the library. Registration is required. People of all ages are welcome. Think Like an Engineer, for children age 7 and up and their siblings, will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. The Lancaster Science Factory will explore American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lancaster. Funds raised through the events helps support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives by funding research, supporting education efforts, and providing free information and critical services for cancer patients. “My (Relay For Life) team is the Misfit Bankers, explained Woolf. “But for Bark For Life, we are the Misfit Barkers. According to Woolf, registration on the day of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., there will be an opening ceremony to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, both human and canine. “We will take the opportunity to remember those we’ve lost, said Woolf, who added that the ceremony is unifying. “There isn’t anyone who doesn’t know someone who has had cancer, Woolf said.

The somber ceremony will be followed by a type of pet parade. “We do a Strut Your Mutt parade, said Woolf. “(During the parade), people who register can be in the contest for biggest, smallest, cutest, (and more categories), said Woolf. The strut will be followed by a game of musical sits and a pet trick contest dubbed Barks Got Talent. “Last year, George, a white Shih Tzu, won because when you say ‘Fire,’ he stops, drops, and rolls, said Woolf. “That was adorable. Paula Auerbach, whose golden retriever Rylan is a KPETS dog, said that she got involved in Bark For Life after seeing how humans and dogs interacted when the KPETS dogs were allowed on the track at See Bark pg 11

Relay For Life - Lancaster. “What was amazing to me was that during the Survivor Walk and the Caregiver Walk, there were so many people who broke ranks to hug the dogs,” she said. “People were so impressed.” Woolf added, “The dogs were very comforting to the survivors and the caregivers during their walk.” Woolf noted that past walks have attracted 80 to 100 walkers, but she hopes to see more this year. Past events have raised up to $10,000, and Woolf hopes to

meet or exceed that goal this year, as well. There is a minimum per-dog registration fee to take part in Bark For Life. Owners registering multiple dogs will receive a discount after registering the first dog. Readers may register at www.relayforlife.org/barklancasterpa. Goodie bags containing items donated by vendors and sponsors of the event will be available for early registrants. Woolf noted that past goodie bags have contained dog-themed items, including dish towels, dog waste bag holders, and flying discs. Leading up to the event, participants may opt to raise funds by asking family and friends to support their efforts.

Harriers Top Crusaders, Pioneers in Key Clash by Eric Stark

In a muddy race, times don’t matter so much, Ryan Kennedy, Manheim Central’s cross country coach said. It’s all about competition, he adds. Tuesday afternoon his runners handled the wet, sloppy conditions well and got the job done in gaining wins against Lancaster Catholic and Lampeter-Strasburg. “I was happy with both teams’ performances, Kennedy said. “The kids are running hard for each other, not just for themselves. LS and Catholic have been running well all season. It

was fun competition today. The boys beat Lancaster Catholic (17-39) and Lampeter-Strasburg (27-29). Carson Hepner and Elijah Wagner were the Barons’ top two finishers. Hepner finished tied for first overall at 18:32. Wagner was third overall, posting an 18:38. Kaden Wenger (18:50) and Isaac Martin (19:03) placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Michael Greenwald placed 13th overall with a 19:49 and Kole Rankin was 17th overall, running a 20:19. “Elijah stepped up big, as did his brother Kaden, said Kennedy “Those

two are very gritty and tough runners. Isaac Martin and Michael Greenwald picked up key spots to round out the top five. Kennedy said Hepner has been running consistently well this season. “He had a solid summer of training, which is allowing him to continue to train hard and recover well, Kennedy said. “On top of that, he’s mentally tough and enjoys competing. The Baron girls beat Lancaster Catholic (21-38) and LampeterStrasburg (22-38). Olivia Sunderland got her first varsity win, finishing with a time of 21:48. Kennedy called it a breakthrough race. Her sister Mallory Sunderland was third overall, posting a 22:10 time. Marianne Fitzkee (22:29) was fourth. Bella Reber (223:45) and Erin Hoffman (24:52) round out the Barons’ top 5 scores, placing eighth and 12th, respectively TENNIS Manheim Central beat Elizabethtown, 6-1, on Monday, Sept. 24. Hannah Kowalski won at No.1 singles (6-2, 6-0), Eliana Shenk notched the win at No.2 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Janae Bright also won 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Kowalski and Shenk won at No.1 doubles, 8-2; Grace

Roberts and Bright won 8-1 and Olivia Good and Julia Myers also won, 8-1. The Barons also beat Wilson, 3-2, on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Central coach Kurtis Funk said when teams play from different leagues they use a playoff format with three singles and two double matches and no player can play both singles and doubles. Kowalski netted a victory at No.1 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Central needed its doubles teams to come up big for the win and they did. Bright and Courtney Weaver won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) and Good and Myers won 6-2, 6-4. Even more impressive, Bright played with a sprained toe. “Our doubles won some nice, close matches to give us the win, Funk said. “Courtney Weaver really stepped up for us in number one doubles. GOLF Brandyn Musser, Dan Pelletier, and Gage McCabe competed at the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament on Monday, Sept. 24. Musser made the cut on the number, 88, qualifying for districts, Friday, Oct. 5. Head coach Charlie Fisher said he and Musser did not think 88 was going to get in, but then they found out he was in a playoff for the final two spots.

“I said to Brandyn, ‘Think, you thought your career was over. So this playoff should be stress free. This is bonus golf,’ “ Fisher said. “So he had to get his clubs from the van, hit a bad first tee shot, and then hit three of the most clutch golf shots he’s ever put together. Musser made a two-foot par putt to clinch it. “Brandyn is a very steady, cool guy, Fisher noted. “He doesn’t get easily rattled and that is a quality that is going to allow him to succeed in life. I look forward to working with him as he gets ready for Districts. Fisher said the conditions on Sept. 24 made for as hard of a high school tournament as you can have. Conestoga Country Club is a tough course on a good day, but, with the weather, it played long and many of those holes were tight. Plus, the greens got faster and weren’t holding come the end of the round, Fisher said. Pelletier and McCabe did not make the cut. Pelletier wrapped up an incredible senior season, finishing fourth in scoring for L-L League Section Three. “Golf is a humbling game and unless you play it competitively, you

don’t quite understand how it is so much more than just hitting good shots, Fisher said. “I am so proud of Dan and all he accomplished. The kid shaved 40 strokes off his score in four years and developed a love and passion for the game. I’d say he did more than alright, even if he doesn’t feel that way right this moment. Gage has work to do, but I think if he puts in the time, he’ll have a great senior year. FOOTBALL Trailing Cocalico 10-0 early in the first quarter, the Barons had the Eagles right where they wanted them. Manheim scored 21 unanswered points and never looked back in a 41-23 triumph against Cocalico Friday, Sept. 28 in Denver. “I don’t know if it was a slow start or just getting a feel for the game, head coach Dave Hahn said. “Cocalico is a good team. With 6.2 seconds left in the first quarter, senior running back Tyler Flick got the scoring started, plowing up the middle from 1-yard out, finding the end zone for the first of his three straight touchdowns. His second TD came on a “Jumbo Package with extra linemen and Flick running off the right side behind Cayden Warner

Elijah Wagner, front, and Kaden Wagner finished third and fifth overall in 18:38 and 19:03, respectively, to pace the Barons to a 2-0 sweep in last Tuesday’s tri-meet with Lampeter-Strasburg and host Lancaster Catholic.

Manheim’s Olivia Sunderland, left, and Mallory Sunderland posted times of 21:48 and 22:10, respectively, to finish first and third Photos by Bob Diller overall and lead the Baron girls to a 2-0 sweep in a tri-meet with Lancaster Catholic and Lampeter-Strasburg last Tuesday at Manheim’s Olivia Good, left, and Julia Myers defeated Wilson’s Breanna Corjul and Elena Caputo, 6-2, 6-4, to give the Barons an important team point in their 3-2 nonleague win at Wilson last Wednesday. said about his linemen. He also credited his defense for staying disciplined and limiting the big plays against an athletic Cocalico squad. BOYS’ SOCCER When does a tie feel like a loss? When you out-shoot (3-2), out-corner (4-1) and dominate the action but don’t come away with a win. That’s what happened for the Central boys against Elizabethtown in a 0-0 game Monday, Sept. 24. Mason Nissley had two saves for the Barons. The Bears first shot on goal did not come until two minutes left in the game. Their second shot didn’t come until 2:15 remaining in the second overtime. MC played great defense. Central coach Rod Brenize said Sam Tobias, Niko Gavala, Austin Snyder, Andrew Echegoyen, Hunter Hess and Carson Brenize all played well. The Barons responded in their next outing Thursday, Sept. 27 with a 3-1 triumph over Lampeter-Strasburg. Zach Reed scored twice (3:00, 37:00) and Carson Brenize (8:00) once, as the Barons found the back of the net three times in the first half.

Gavala and Reed had assists. GIRLS’ SOCCER In a very physical game against a team who’s record does not accurately show how good they are, the Barons held off a determined Elizabethtown squad, 1-0, on Monday, Sept. 24. Elizabeth Levy scored 58 minutes in the game for the lone goal. The second-half goal was assisted by Makenna Copley. Head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said Brittany Benner and Tori Fahnestock have been dominant at the back on defense with Kelli Kreider behind them. “We’re now 430 minutes since giving up a goal from the run of play,” Stoltzfus said. “The only goal we gave up in the time span was off a free kick to Fleetwood.” Later in the week, Central’s streak came to an end, as Hempfield scored a 2-1 win against the Barons on Friday, Sept. 29. The streak expanded to more than 470 minutes, as MC led 1-0 at halftime, prior to Central giving up two second-half goals. Junior Autumn Greiner scored 36 minutes into the game for Central, which outshot 7 to 5 and had more corners 6 to 3 than Hempfield. Benner added her second assist for the week and Kreider had 3 saves. VOLLEYBALL Finally healthy, the Barons are showing the potential head coach Laurie McClure knew the team had. The Barons beat Cocalico, 3-1, (25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22) last Monday. Tori Henderson had two aces and added a block. Rebecca Keppley notched 15 kills and a block. Ciara Stoner posted 25 digs and Grace Stoltzfus dished out 28 assists. “Cocalico was a good test to stay mentally confident in our abilities and fended off their push to win,” McClure said. “Our defensive drive is fueling our offensive attack. We are making the right progression at this point in the season.” This past Saturday, Central Photo by Thom Swarr Manheim’s Isaac Perron turns upfield after catching a pass in the advanced to the second round of the Manheim Central Tournament, losing Barons’ 41-23 Section Two win at Cocalico last Friday.

to the eventual champion Penn Manor. The Barons beat Schuykill Valley, 25-23, before losing 25-10, 25-22 to the Comets. Now the Barons are gearing up for the ALS fundraiser event Oct. 8 set to take place between the junior varsity and varsity games (about 6:30 and 7 p.m.) when Central faces Wyomissing Area. The fundraiser is for Jen Kready, the mother of current Baron Elena Kready. McClure said the team is attempting to set up a link for people to donate. FIELD HOCKEY Central secured a 2-0 shutout in a dominating performance against Garden Spot on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Lily Sipel and Kylie Kroesen each scored. “It was a very wet and muddy game, and playing on grass is always a challenge,” said head coach Morgan Briggs, “but when you add rain and mud to the mix it makes it even more difficult.” The girls weathered the storm and played together, she said. “I told them after the game it was a well-earned team win,” Briggs said. “Mattie Hartzler and Alissa Brubaker did a great job keeping the ball on their stick on the right side and forcing the other team to turn it over or foul. That was key for us.” Lexi Hosler and Jenna Lutz maintained possession in the middle of the field and were able to receive many of their big hits cleanly, said Briggs adding that the girls took another step forward after this game. Central attempted to play E-town Wednesday, Sept. 26 and nine minutes into the game it started storming. MC was winning 1-0 with a goal by Kroesen assisted by Codi Bollinger. The game will be resumed at a date and time to be determined. The Barons ended the week with an 8-0 loss to Donegal. Goalie Mikayla Regan stopped 10 shots.

and Troy Kolk. The Barons’ offense really started humming after receiver Will Rivers made a diving catch in front of the Central sideline on a pass from quarterback Evan Simon, who threw for one TD and added two more on the ground. “When we can get the offense clicking, we get energized,” Hahn said. “I tell the guys, ‘Just take what they give you and have fun.’ “ Defensively, the Barons contained Cocalico QB Noah Palm and held the Eagles to 200 yards rushing and 118 passing and recovered a key fumble in the first half during Central’s comeback. The turnover led to a 3-yard Flick TD and a 21-10 Baron lead with 2:22 left in the second quarter. The Barons are now 2-0 in Section Two and 6-0 overall. This is the third win where Central has trailed 10-0 in the first quarter. Central rushed for 247 yards and passed for 156 yards. Hahn said at halftime he told his offensive line that they were going to put the ball on the ground. “I’m going to call on them and they’ve got to be ready to go,” Hahn
