Promoting Financial Literacy BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The statistics are sobering. According to PA Forward, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association, 45% of American adults give themselves a grade of C, D or F on their personal finance knowledge. More than one in six students do not reach the baseline level of proficiency in financial literacy. One in four adults do not save any portion of their income for retirement.

Manheim Community Library is hoping to help. The library, located at 15 E. High St., offers a wide range of financial literacy resources, including programs on saving money, job search support and books for people of all ages. “We want to help people build a strong financial future,” said Andrea Black, library director. “Financial literacy is not something that people are typically taught in school, but it’s very important.” See Literacy pg 2

Katherine and Jason Horst perform as Cissy and The Man.

Playing For Laughs “I love to laugh, and I love to make people laugh,” said Katherine Horst. She gets to do that every time she puts on makeup, a costume and a red nose to transform into Cissy, the alter-ego clown she portrays as one-half of Cissy and The Man. “The Man” is her partner both on and off stage - her husband, Jason Horst. The duo, which operates Horst Arts in Manheim - she’s a fine artist specializing in collage and he’s a graphic designer and web developer - has been performing as “America’s favorite juggler and clown duo” for 10 years. “We can call ourselves ‘America’s favorite,’ because as far as I know, we are the only juggler-clown

combination performing together,” Jason explained with a laugh. When Katherine and Jason met through a young adults Bible study at their church, they bonded over their love of the arts. Katherine was also impressed with Jason’s juggling skills, which he honed as a member of the Lancaster Throwback Juggling Club. After they married in 2010, they realized that Jason, who describes himself as a “linear and logical thinker,” and Katherine, who says she thinks more out of the box, could bring their skill sets together into a stage show. Jason plays the straight man to Katherine’s clown. “Cissy is a whole lot like me, turned up a couple of notches,” Katherine said. “I think of her as a

young girl, a playful girl. She’s feisty and she thinks outside the realm of imagination.” Katherine, who grew up in a theatrical family, said being a clown is fun, but it takes work. “When I put on my makeup and my nose, I’m fully in character,” she stated. “Being a clown is physically hard.” Katherine noted that she’s always “on” when she’s in character, constantly aware of her surroundings, monitoring the reactions of the people she’s meeting and gauging an audience’s comfort level. She also changes her voice to be Cissy. “I am a clown that talks, while some don’t,” she stated. “I think it removes barriers and it’s easier to engage with people when I speak to them.”

The grounds of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will get a little creepy when the faire hosts Halloween Days & Spooky Knights. The Halloween-themed weekends will run on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “The fairgrounds lend themselves to autumn celebrations,” noted

Director Andrea Black with some of the library’s financial resources

2 - MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - October 6, 2021

As Black explained, “financial literacy” refers to the ability to make informed decisions in areas ranging from personal finance to business management, teaching spending and saving skills to children or helping elders with retirement or estate planning. As part of the PA Forward program, the library is focused on five literacies: basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy and financial literacy. Having achieved the program’s goals in the first four areas, the library has been named a Silver Star Library by PA Forward. Strengthening its financial literacy focus will help the library achieve Gold Star status. As one of its first financial resource programs, the library will host the Extreme Savings Coupon Club in the basement community room beginning on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. “People are encouraged to come and swap coupons and money-saving tips,” Black explained. Children are welcome to stay and play during the meeting. For job seekers, the library has added an Employment Resources page to its website, where patrons can use online resources such as PA Career-

Link or Brainfuse JobNow. “Brainfuse is a great resource, because it connects people with career coaches for oneon-one advice in their job search,” Black noted. She has been working to update and expand printed resources for financial literacy as well, including purchasing new books on budgeting and how to start a business. Onsite resources at the library include five public computers, Wi-Fi, print and copy services and access to newspapers for job listings. The library also participated in September’s 1st Thursday event in Manheim, with a booth featuring job resources and lists of open positions at the library’s major business sponsors. The financial literacy programs are just another way the library serves its community, Black said. “Libraries are more than just books,” she stated. “We are here to serve everyone’s needs, no matter what that need is, from learning to read to taking care of your health to focusing on your finances. We are here to help.” For more information on the financial literacy resources at the library, visit https://manheimlibrary.org. Masks are required for all indoor programs.

From Vietnam To Lancaster Mike Caimi has always looked up to Vietnam War helicopter pilots. “They were kinda my heroes,” said Caimi, who admired the young American men for their ability to fly helicopters through the jungles of Southeast Asia. As an adult, he became friends with Jim Haga, a Vietnam Huey pilot who served two tours during the war. “We were talking about restoring a helicopter and getting it out in front of Vietnam veterans,” said Caimi, who worked with Haga and others to form the Liberty War Bird Association, which Caimi now serves as president. In 2015, the organization began to realize Caimi and Haga’s dream when a helicopter, which was discovered in California, made the journey to a hangar in Lititz where it will be used as a “flying museum.” During the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s W heels and Wings Festival held at the Lancaster Airport in July, Caimi quickly recounted the history of the Huey before the chopper returned and its thundering sounds

“STEAM On The Rails” Planned Students and teachers will join the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania for its virtual “STEAM on the Rails” event on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and Thursday, Oct. 21. This program is designed to help children in kindergarten through grade six to learn about the role of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) in their daily lives. Students will watch live demonstrations and programs via Zoom, including how levers and pulleys work and how a steam locomotive works. The program will feature four 30-minute presentations each day. Registration is available by donation at www.event brite.com; search for “STEAM on the Rails Virtual Program.” For more information about the museum, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628.

drowned out his words. “Our helicopter served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970,” said Caimi, noting that the bird logged 1,300 combat flight hours. The helicopter first served with C Company of the 101st Aviation Battalion before being involved in an accident that necessitated repairs. In late 1969, the Huey went to the 170th Assault Helicopter Company, where it primarily brought troops in and out of combat landing zones and did some cross- border flights into Cambodia. After being used in Vietnam, the Huey was flown to the Fort Rucker Army Flight School, where it served for five years to train future Army aviators. From there, it was transferred to the Oklahoma National Guard, where it was used from 1975 to 1994. It was then decommissioned and went to the Texas State Technical College as a training aircraft. In 2012, it was sold to an individual in the helicopter parts industry. “(The new owner) had heard about our organization and how we were looking for a Huey,” said Caimi,

who noted that the owner reached out to Liberty thinking the helicopter was in good enough shape to be restored. In March 2015, Caimi went to California and, after a cursory inspection of the helicopter, made a deal. “ We had enough money to put a deposit down,” recalled Caimi, who added that a member who was connected to the VFW arranged for donated truck transportation for the helicopter from California to Lancaster. “It took us three years to restore it,” said Caimi, who noted that the work was completed in the Lititz

hangar in August of 2018. “It took about 30,000 man hours and $600,000 of donations (to complete the restoration),” said Caimi. “It was a true labor of love.” “The mission of the Liberty War Birds is to get this helicopter in front of as many veterans as possible to show it off and reconnect them with their history,” said Caimi, who added that the organization also wants to educate the public on what the Huey does and what it did in Vietnam. Along with the faire’s traditional entertainment schedule, including live music, comedy shows and jousts, the weekends will feature Halloween elements. A “Nipperkins” costume contest will be held for children age 11 and under. Adults can also participate in a costume contest that will award prizes for both individual and group costumes. Additional activities will include a treasure hunt, where children will be invited to follow

Candace Smith, director of sales and communications, adding that the faire has held the Halloween events for several years. “It was a natural fit.” The weekends will feature all of the usual faire festivities, along with special holiday-themed activities, she stated. Smith set up the Halloween scenario, saying that through his privateering, Sir Walter Raleigh has brought prosperity and commerce to the Shire of Mount Hope, but he’s also brought attention, and some of it is unwanted. “As ships laden with riches traverse the ... rivers and bays, a dark and hungry force begins to stir in the murky waters below, woken from its standing slumber and champing at the bit for blood,” she related. “The various factions of the

Next year, as a coach, I know I need to focus on more individualized instruction. Hopefully, I can see my players throughout the off season to get them off the rocky path to being a league contender.” GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Last weekend Manheim hosted the 2021 Baron Classic. Friday night they had seven junior varsity teams from schools like Cedar Cliff, Conestoga Valley, Greencastle-Antrim, and Daniel Boone. The Manheim Central JV team lost in the finals to Conestoga Valley. Abbie Reed also notched two goals. Summer Bates, Mikayla Beck and Katie White found the back of the net for the Barons. Stoltzfus said last Monday’s win against Spot was a good chance for Manheim to get back

on track after a tough 3-0 loss on Saturday. He said the win against the Spartans was a real team effort. “Our offense was moving the ball well and took our opportunities,” he said. “The defense defended as a unit, and when we got a lead and Garden Spot had to make some adjustments to try and get back in the game, our midfield really took control of the game.” The Barons defeated Donegal 4-0 on Sept. 23 with Adair and

Jason Moyer said there was a lot of competitive play throughout the day. On Sept. 23, Central beat Garden Spot 3-0 on set scores of 2511, 25-11 and 25-11. Grace Stoltzfus was a leader on the court with 15 assists and two aces. Emma Moyer added five kills and two aces. Rachel Nolt and Natalie Siegrist each had two blocks. Rachel Nissley had three assists. FIELD HOCKEY The Barons went on the road for a 3-2 overtime victory last week. Kiley Hosler and Ella Brubaker had goals during regulation and Kylie Kroesen got the game-winning goal with about six minutes remaining in OT. Monica Herman made a diving save on the goal line with the score tied 2-2. The win keeps the Barons on task for their season objectives. Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said earlier this season that she believes her team will be in contention all year. “This is a team that’s going to be there in the end for a section (title) and play in the post season,” said Briggs. BOYS’ SOCCER Manheim led 2-1 in the second half against Oley Valley, but the Lynx scored three goals for a come-from-behind win. Gabe Redcay scored both goals. Peter Burkhart had an assist. Central had six shots and seven corners in the game. At Northeastern, it was all Bobcats, resulting in a 4-0 verdict. Both losses came against two strong teams. The Barons are holding down the No. 9 seed in the District Three Class 3A with a 6-4 record.

GIRLS’ TENNIS The Lady Barons beat Cocalico 6-1 last Thursday, giving them 103 record. They are ranked tenth in the district and the top eight teams make districts. Holly Miller won 6-3, 6-3; Samantha Weaver pulled out a 7-5 decision before her opponent retired with an injury. Briana Mylin gained a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Gabriella Wettig and Mylin won 8-4 in doubles. Williams and Miller cruised to an 8-0 victory and Sydney Peters and Kami Groff also posted an 8-0 decision. FOOTBALL The Barons improved their record to 5-0 after holding off Wilson 24-21, Friday, Sept. 24 at West Lawn. After their first two possessions ended in interceptions and Manheim trailed 7-0, Brady Harbach caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Judd Novak. It was a 12-play, 74-yard drive. Senior kicker Connor Caterbone nailed a 29-yard field to give the Barons a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs took a 14-10 lead to the locker room at intermission. The Baron “D” clamped down in the second half. Down 14-10, Owen Sensenig hauled-in a 39-yard pass from Novak and Rocco Daugherty pulled in a three-yard catch from Novak to put Central ahead 2414. Wilson scored late to cut the Barons’ lead to 24-21 and Central’s defense held on. Novak threw for 129 yards passing and added 57 yards rushing. Justin Heffernan rushed for 84 yards on 23 carries. Sensenig had two catches for 50 yards. Mason Weaver had three catches for 20 yards.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an outbreak of coronavirus scams, which may target older Americans. John Waggoner and Andy Markowitz of AARP offer some suggestions for avoiding these scams: -Avoid online offers for coronavirus cures or faster access to vaccines. They may not be legitimate. -Be wary of emails, calls, and social media posts advertising free or governmentordered COVID-19 tests. Check the FDA website, www.fda.gov, for a list of approved tests and testing companies. -Don’t click on links or download files from unexpected emails, even if the email address looks like it is connected to a company or person you recognize. The same goes for text messages and unfamiliar websites. -Don’t share personal information such as Social Security, Medicare, and credit card

Intentional Shopping Founder Jenn Knepper is excited about holding a live Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) fair this year. The fair will feature about 30 nonprofit organizations, including more than a dozen marketplace vendors with fair trade items, and several food trucks. Knepper has noticed a buying trend toward locally made items and concern for a greater cause. “People are being more intentional about shopping,” she said. “There’s something for everyone at this fair.” The 14th annual event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The fair focuses on nonprofits and other organizations that provide life-changing bene-

fits to people. Luisa Tapia has been taking part in the event since 2019. Her business, My Peruvian Treasures, features fairly traded sustainable products made by women in Peru. “A portion of our sales goes to community programs,” explained Tapia. Also showcasing products at the fair this year will be Revolution Lancaster, a social enterprise with a mission to empower women who are experiencing homelessness or facing barriers. Dana Robertson is the board chair. “We recruit (women living in Lancaster), and they handcraft jewelry,” said Robertson, who noted the makers are paid a fair and living wage to help empower them financially. “ We are not yet able to employ them full time, but we are able to give them supplemental

income,” she ex plained, adding, “It’s about the supportive community.” Bethany Christian Services is known for adoption work, but Candace Reynolds will represent the organization’s Safe Families for Children program at GTGH. “We … believe everyone deserves to be loved, connected, and safe,” said Reynolds, who noted that Safe Families is designed to support families in crisis by bridging gaps with emergency child care and other types of help. Bench Mark, a youth development and mentoring program, will be represented at the fair for the first time by founder and executive director Will Kiefer. “ We will be talking about the opportunity to give through Bench Mark to our students,” explained Kiefer, who noted there will be
