Funds raised at the dinner will benefit the Ruhl’s UMC Mission Outreach Team and local, national, and global missions. In July, a team from Ruhl’s traveled to the town of Clendenin in Kanawha County, W.Va., to help with continued relief efforts from a 2016 flood event that was one of the deadliest in the state’s history. “We ended up helping with two work projects, putting in siding and doing some other home improvements,” organizer and trip participant Gail Ruhl said. “(The residents) were very appreciative.” Ruhl said that the Ruhl’s UMC Mission Outreach Team is still in the process of determining a destination for its mission trip in the summer of 2020 but plans to have selected a destination by the end of this year. Approximately 20 to 25 people ranging from teenagers to adults typically participate in the annual summer service trips. Memorial Flags from pg 4 cemetery. With the new grave section expansion, the Flags-Up event in May of 2020 will initially need at least 660 interment flags to complete the display and flag donations continuing through the year to maintain a supply of replacement interment flags. Specifically, an interment flag is the flag presented to the surviving family member at a military honors funeral. The Department of Veterans Affairs has a strict policy stating only interment flags are permitted to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. Through the years, many families have donated their flags to be flown on the Avenue of Flags at this national cemetery as a tribute to their deceased loved one regardless of where the veteran is buried.

The cemetery’s Memorial Council invites the public to become involved in the Avenue of Flags program by donating their family’s interment flag and allowing the Memorial Council to fly it on the Avenue of Flags. Of the 135 national cemeteries, Indiantown Gap and a smaller one in South Dakota are known as the only ones presenting this style of the Avenue of Flags from the beginning of May until shortly after Veterans Day in November. Every flag is inspected by the weekly inspection teams that take down and replace weather-worn flags, sometimes at the rate of 90 to 100 flags per month. Weather-worn flags are then properly retired, and their ashes are placed in the bottom of a standard grave before a veteran’s casket is placed.

Anyone who would like to donate an interment flag may drop it off at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery’s Administration Building (the building with the barn silo) on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. There will also be two collection locations set up on Saturday, Oct. 12, to accept donated flags to the Avenue of Flags presentation. Memorial Council member Althea Cirillo will collect flags at The Bridge Faith Community, 10 Kauffman Road (Route 934), Annville, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bob Hauser will collect flags at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery from noon until 2 p.m. Readers may also contact Hauser at marinedadbob@yahoo.com if they cannot visit either of the collection locations

that day. Boy Scout troops, VFWs, American Legions and other organizations that perform flag retirement ceremonies are encouraged not to retire flags but to donate them to the Memorial Council so those flags can be flown in final tribute at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Members of the public may also consider making a financial donation to the Memorial Council. Funds go toward purchasing the aluminum flag staffs for the flags or toward the annual purchase of the full set of state and territorial flags. For more information, readers may visit http://igncmc.webs.com. Questions may be sent to Hauser at marinedadbob@ yahoo.com.

The congregation of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, is excited to host its first-ever Fall Harvest Bash on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4:15 p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz pavilion, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. “This was Pastor’s idea,” fellowship committee chair Millie Gundel said. “She wanted a bash, and not just a bash, a big bash.” Interim pastor Barbara Caruana has helped to organize similar events at the previous churches she has served, and she finds them a valuable aspect of congregational life. “Church is about being outside of here,” Caruana said, gesturing to Zion’s facility. “(It’s about) being neighborly and part of the community.” Jim and Kim Paternoster, who are part of the bash planning committee, said that they see the event as serving two purposes: fellowship and letting the community know of Zion’s existence. The church is a quiet force in the community, serving meals every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and hosting the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which distributes groceries to those in need on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Zion also sponsors Cub Scout Pack 37, which meets at the church. Additionally, Zion hosts a monthly Kids’

Club, which runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month for elementary school-age children. The gatherings begin with a free meal served to children and their families. Due to space limitations, however, the Fall Harvest Bash is unable to take place at Zion, so a church member who belongs to the Liederkranz suggested the nearby venue for the event. “It’ll be a good time for all of us to get together and celebrate fall,” Gundel said. The Fall Harvest Bash will be held rain or shine. Dinner will be served at 4:45 p.m. The menu will include roast pork and grilled chicken, along with multiple sides, desserts, hot pretzels with horseradish mustard, and hot and cold beverages. In honor of the German heritage of the Lutheran denomination, live musical entertainment will be provided by the Heidelberg Brass Band and the Liederkranz’s Hobbychor. Dancing - including the polka, of course - and singing will commence at 5:45 p.m. Additionally, activities for children will be offered throughout the afternoon and evening. These will include pumpkin painting, hayrides, jar guessing games, and the challenge to eat apples and doughnuts suspended with strings without using any hands. Opportunities to make crafts will also be available, and a silent auction will be held during the bash. Tickets will be required to attend the Fall Harvest Bash and must be purchased by Sunday, Oct. 20. Separate prices have been set for children ages 6 to 11 and anyone age

12 and older. Youngsters age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge. To purchase tickets, readers may call the church office at 717-898-2911, contact any member of the congregation, or stop by the church on Sundays between 7:45 a.m. and noon. Guests are also welcome to attend worship services at Zion, which begin at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. Faith Formation classes for people of all ages meet at 9:15 a.m.

For more information about Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, readers may visit www.zionhempfield.net. Pictured on front: Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Landisville will host a Fall Harvest Bash at the Lancaster Liederkranz on Oct. 26. Tickets are being sold in advance.

Baron Booters Upend Oley Valley, 3-2 By Eric G. Stark

The Barons did something few teams have done this season against Oley Valley - score goals. Oley Valley had eight straight shutouts, lost once and had a tie to Lancaster Mennonite. Manheim didn’t just score on Oley, the Barons won the game, 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 5. Tied 2-2 late in the second half in

Manheim, Tyler Snavely passed the ball to Bryce Dombach, who waited patiently as the keeper came out and placed the ball past OV’s goalie into bottom of the net. “Bryce was very composed,” head coach Rod Brenize said. “I am pleased because he kept his poise and didn’t rush the shot. It was awesome. It was senior night and it felt like a playoff game.”

The winning score actually began at midfield on a series of passes where guys like Quintin Rohrer, Brett Kreider, Jacob Cipko and Seth Haldeman moved the ball down field to Snavely, who found Dombach for the gamewinner. Connor Caterbone, on his birthday, got the scoring started for the Barons, cleaning up a mad scramble in front of the net. On an extended corner kick

and melee in the 18-box, the sophomore pounded the ball into the back of the net, giving him his first career goal and a nice birthday gift. The Barons second goal came from Nate Reed, who zipped a ball into the net on a kick from 25-30 yards out. “It was a laser,” Brenize said. “The thing that pleases me the most about Nate is he has grown as much as a man. I see the growth in his personality. He is talking more on the field.”

This win, plus beating Ephrata 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday, Oct. 1, is satisfying for Brenize, who knows things haven’t always gone in his team’s favor this season. “We haven’t gotten the results we felt we deserved in certain cases this season,” he said. “Life isn’t always fair. But the Ephrata game and the Oley Valley game we got the result. It shows we are learning.” Snavely scored twice and Dom-

bach added a goal in the victory over the Mountaineers. Reed added an assist, and goalie Dylan Smith had five saves. Central suffered two losses last week, dropping a 4-1 decision to Susquehannock and a 6-1 loss to McCaskey. In a game that was tied 1-1 at halftime, Dombach notched the lone goal against Susquehannock. Snavely scored in the McCaskey loss.

Manheim’s Tyler Hartl fights through the block by Lampeter- The Barons’ Mason Morales spars with Lampeter-Strasburg’s Strasburg’s Zac Shelley during the Barons’ 33-14, Section Two Parker Owens along the line of scrimmage in Manheim’s 33-14, Section Two win last Friday at L-S. win over the host Pioneers last Friday. Special Teams: “Colby Wagner had a good game on the punt team” Hahn said. Next up for the Barons is a home game against Conestoga Valley on Friday, Oct. 11. “Their offense is scoring a lot of points,” Hahn said. “Their quarterback can run and throw the ball well and is pretty dynamic. We are still scouting their defense. CV is 2-4, but I think they are a little better than their record.

“We can’t afford to not get up for every game. We’re going to get CV’s best game. They have good coaches and they’ll try to exploit our weaknesses and we have to do a good job of hiding our weakness.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Central suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Ephrata on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Abbie Reed took a pass from Makenna Copley and scored her first varsity goal and snapped Ephrata’s over 800-minute shutout streak. The Barons gave a great effort, despite being short-handed because of injuries. “The Ephrata game was one of our better performances,” head coach Andy Stoltzfus said. “We really played tough and it took an amazing game by their keeper to deny us the victory. With Isabella Wendler out injured we relied on a very young attack of nearly all freshmen and sophomores. MaKenna Copley was the only upperclassman in our attack. She really stepped up and led our offense. It was disappointing not to get anything out of that game but was a promising sign for the rest of the season.” Manheim recovered from the loss to beat McCaskey 7-1 on Thursday, Oct. 3. Hannah Adair scored twice. Also scoring were Copley, Olissa Clingenpeel, Kaylee Neff, Tylee Stauffer and Kristina Miller. Gaining assists were Neff (two), Copley, Miller,

Shauna Lukus and Kelly Abrahamson. FIELD HOCKEY The Barons scored three times in each half, beating McCaskey 6-0 on Monday, Sept. 30. Scorers included Kylie Kroesen, who found the back of the net twice, Maddy Barbush, Mattie Hartzler, Helena Bidelman and Lexi Hosler. Lily Sipel had two assists and Kroesen and Hosler also aided on goals. “I was pleased that we had a variety of different goal scorers,” head coach Morgan Briggs said. “Senior Helena Bidelman was able to get her 2nd goal of the season. Jenna Lutz had some great step ups in the midfield and Kylie Kroesen played very well offensively. This was a step in the right direction for our team. We were able to transfer the ball in the backfield quite a bit and had some very nice passing combinations.” Central also tied Lampeter-Strasburg 1-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Mattie Hartzler setup Kroesen for the Barons’

one goal. “The game against LS was frustrating because we tied but the majority of the game,” Briggs said. “We fought hard against LS’s attack. Our defense stayed strong and goalie Mikayla Regan (9 saves) had some key saves.” TENNIS Maddie Moyer won her first round match in the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament, but lost in the second. “She played great but was sick,” head coach Kurtis Funk said about Moyer. The Barons’ other three singles players lost in the first round. All three doubles teams advanced to the second round. Eliana Shenk and Courtney Weaver teamed up at No.1 doubles. Emmy Varner and Moyer played No. 2 doubles and Kami Groff and Abbi Martin played No. 3 doubles. In the quarterfinals, Varner and Moyer advanced to the semifinals before losing to CV, 8-3. The other doubles teams lost in the quarterfinals.

FOOTBALL The Manheim Central football team tallied 376 yards on offense and rolled to a 33-14 victory against LampeterStrasburg on Friday, Oct. 4. Wide receiver turned running back Colby Wagner had a big game. The senior had seven receptions for 152 yards and 89 yards rushing on 14 carries. He rushed for three touchdowns and caught another. “We went with different looks, like nine linemen, a QB and Colby in the backfield,” head coach Dave Hahn said. “We used it in different situations. Colby had great patience and vision.” Quarterback Evan Simon completed 14 of 30 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. Hahn said the team did some good things offensively and credited the offensive line for improving. He also said receivers like Wagner, J.D. Grube and Cole Lastinger have stepped up and are playing well. The Barons’ defense gave up 338 yards, but only yielded 14 points against the Pioneers’ high-powered offense. “I think our defense is playing well,” Hahn said. “I think it all starts up front and starts with Troy Kolk. I don’t think he gets enough credit. If one person is on him they hold him and he doesn’t get the call. They put two people on him and they still hold him and don’t get the call. L-S even put three people on him and he gets through.” Here are the standout players of the game on offense, defense and special teams, according to Hahn. Offense: Colby Wagner - “The key for us was getting the ball in his hands,” he said. “He had close to 280 all-purpose yards.” Defense: Evan Simon- “He had a good game,” Hahn said, “and has been a stud for us all season at safety.” Troy Kolk - “He’s definitely a stud

Central lost 3-0 to Manheim Township in the team tournament on Monday Sept. 30. “They (MT) have a bunch of kids that have played tennis their whole lives,” Funk said. “We do not. Our kids played well, but that is why Manheim Township is undefeated.” CROSS COUNTRY The boys’ cross country team held off Donegal, 27-29, and beat Northern Lebanon, 22-34, on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Elijah Wagner was the top runner for the Barons with a time of 17:27. Isaac Martin was ten seconds behind him at 17:37. The two finished second and third overall. Michael Greenwald was eighth overall with a time of 18:35. Brady Knier was on his heels at 18:46 and Gabe Damon (19:04) rounded out the top five Baron runners. The girls’ beat Northern Lebanon, 17-43, but lost to Donegal, 21-42. Olivia Sunderland placed second overall, running at 21:01. Bella Reber was fifth overall with a 21:55. Alaina Bruckhart (23:55), Jenna Moffett (24:48) and Emma Levitan (25:28) rounded out the top five for the Barons. “Olivia Sunderland and Bella Reber ran well as our No.1 and No. 2 runners,” head coach Ryan Kennedy said. “Bella made up a lot of places in the second half of the race. Elijah Wagner and Isaac Martin continue to run well as our No.1 and No.2 and Isaac did a nice job holding off a Donegal runner in the last mile. Freshman Carson Brooks (19:18) had a big race, finishing 6th for us but displacing Donegal’s fifth runner to help us get the win.” VOLLEYBALL Manheim defeated Lebanon 3-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 1 on game scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-21. Elena Kready paced the Barons with six aces. Tori Henderson and Emma Moyer were strong at the net, gaining eight kills each. Maddie Knier added two blocks while Grace Stoltzfus collected three assists and two digs.

Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith.
