Drawing Closer To A Cure

Makenna’s Big Thank-You Parade

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Baron Elementary School principal Mike Pyle (left) greeted student Makenna Linder at the conclusion of a parade held in Manheim on Oct. 3 A parade was held in Manheim on Oct. 3 to celebrate the end of cancer treatments for Makenna Linder (back row, center). She and her family were driven when the community celebrated her final cancer treatment. along the parade route in a fire truck.

To thank her many supporters and to celebrate the end of her cancer treatments, Makenna Linder took part in a parade through Manheim on Oct. 3 during which the 6-year-old and her family were chauffeured along a parade route lined with community members, many of whom wore PinkOutforMcKenna T-shirts while holding signs and pink balloons. Makenna, a student at Baron Elementary School, was dressed as a princess in her favorite color of pink, as she rode aboard a fire truck named Howie, owned by Duane and Gina Ober. The truck made stops at local businesses who helped raised money for the family during Makenna’s battle with cancer. Many of the businesses in the town held monthly Pink Out Days during which employees were encouraged to wear pink or Pink Out for Makenna T-shirts that were sold as a fundraiser. “We stopped at eight different businesses who

did fundraisers for Makenna throughout all of this and at the Manheim Central Middle School,” said Makenna’s mother, Amanda. “We also drove through Pleasant View Retirement Community. They also did fundraising and Pinked Out every month. We ended at Baron Elementary.”

It helped her mentally to see everyone supporting her and rallying around her. She went through a lot,” said Amanda. “Just seeing all the people was amazing for her.” At the school, people gathered for a sociallydistanced celebration that featured the band and cheerleaders from Manheim Central High School. The parade was organized by Julie Reed, Makenna’s kindergarten teacher from last year. Knowing Makenna loves the color pink, Reed

held a school-wide surprise Pink Out for Makenna at the school in January. “We were socially distant, so it was not the same type of Pink Out as the original one, but we are glad we are able to celebrate with her,” said Reed. Amanda said that Makenna enjoyed the parade, especially when her brother Bradyn dressed up as a pink unicorn. “It helped her mentally to see everyone supporting her and rallying around her. She went through a lot,” said Amanda. “Just seeing all the people was amazing for her.” “We appreciate everybody’s support and fundraising from all the local businesses and people personally. We got cards and letters and she got presents all throughout the year,” Amanda added. To view the parade, readers may visit www.youtube.com and search or “#PinkOutForMakenna Celebration Parade (10-3-2020).” In 2017, Makenna was diagnosed with a Stage II Wilms tumor that necessitated the removal of

If there is a platinum lining to the cancellation of large in-person events, it is this: Moving events online allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to attend, provided they have an internet connection. Kelly Brazzo, co-founder and co-chair of the CureLGMD2i Foundation, has taken advantage of that opportunity in her plans for the 10th annual signature game night, which is the organization’s largest fundraising event. “People from all over the country are signing up,” Brazzo said. “The majority are people with the disease who haven’t been able to attend in the past because of travel limitations.” Brazzo predicted that more than 300 people will log on for the online event on Saturday, Oct. 24, rather than the usual 130 to 150 who have attended previous years’ events at Eden Resort and the Lancaster Elks. One of those people will be Dallas, Texas, resident

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to fivestar service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,” McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tempur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The twosided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-to-consumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its

Shenk Posts Undefeated League Tennis Season

BY ERIC G. STARK

Eliana Shenk used her serve-andvolley game and wasn’t afraid to come to the net in an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cocalico freshman Mali Yang in the Class 3A LancasterLebanon League singles tournament Thursday, Oct. 8 at Conestoga Valley High School. Shenk’s coach, Kurtis Funk, was impressed with the decisions his senior made, knowing when to come to the net and being selective when she came in. Her left-handed stroke can be deceptive and can throw off an opponent for a few games, Funk said. Shenk amassed more than 40 wins in singles in four years, playing No. 4, No. 2 and No.1 for two years in singles. In the second round of leagues, she ran into Penn Manor’s

Catherine Rabatin, the top seed in the tourney and suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss, ending her singles career in Manheim. “Her singles career was excellent,” Funk said about Shenk, who went undefeated in league play this year (7-0). “I am super proud of her. She was consistent, reliable and always showed up with her best effort.” Shenk and her doubles partner, Brianna Mylin, received a bye in league doubles and advanced to play in the second round Saturday at CV (this result came after the Merchandiser’s deadline). The duo went undefeated in league play as partners. The Barons ended their season with a 7-1 record. Lampeter-Strasburg won Section Two and the Barons finished second. Normally they would have made the league playoffs, but because of COVID-19,

the field was reduced. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Barons beat Ephrata Monday, Oct. 5 in three games, 2517, 25-19 and 26-24. Manheim was strong at the net, as Emma Moyer and Maddie Knier each had 10 kills. Grace Stoltzfus added one block, but she made her biggest mark by dishing out 30 assists. Mackenzie Ginder registered seven serving aces. Defensively, Monica Bauman and Emma Damon had nine and eight digs respectively. BOYS’ SOCCER Baron Boys’ Soccer lost to L-S, 3-1 Monday. Quinlann Kaufman notched Central’s goal, scoring at the 64:00 mark off a pass from Nate Reed. Wednesday Central pulled out a 1-0 overtime triumph over Elizabethtown. Junior Sam Shefnie scored the game winner off an extended corner. FIELD HOCKEY Junior Kylie Kroesen provided the only goal for the Barons in a 3-1 loss Monday to section-leading Ephrata. Central had four corners and five shots in the contest. The junior varsity lost for the first time this year, giving up the winning goal with 47 seconds left in regulation. In a hard-fought contest, the Lady Barons lost 4-0 to L-S on Wednesday. “It was a great fight against a great team,” Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said. “Unfortunately, we were outmatched with speed but the girls played their hardest and didn’t stop working.” CROSS COUNTRY Brady Knier, who has committed to Lebanon Valley College next fall,

finished third overall with a time of 19:27. Central coach Ryan Kennedy said Knier, who returns to a team that finished 10-1 last season, made a lot of progress over the last year and he’s excited to see what he can do. Knier’s strong finish was not enough to old off an outstanding performance by Elco, which placed four runners in the top five in a 23-33 triumph over the Barons Monday in boys’ cross country at Columbia. Central beat Columbia 17-44. Juniors Ezekiel Ruffner (19:48) and Bailey Garman (21:01) placed sixth and seventh, respectively while Nicholas Bair (21:21, 9th), Carmon Evans (21:55, 10th) and Joshua Noll (21:59, 11th) also placed in the top 15. On the girls’ side, Central earned a 22-39 victory over Elco and a 15-50 win against Columbia. The Lady Barons placed three runners in the top five. Freshman Julie Lindberg was the overall winner with a time of 22:31. Fellow freshman Savannah Semple (23:55) was third. Junior Alaina Bruckhart (24:33) placed fifth and was followed by a slew of teammates in Madelynn Hoffman (25:23, 6th), Jenna Moffett (25:24, 7th), Emma Levitan (26:51, 9th), Laura King (26:59, 10th) and Paige Heslop (27:30, 11th). GIRLS’ SOCCER Leading 2-0 at halftime behind a defense that thwarted Elizbethtown’s attack and an offense that spaced and passed well and cashed in two first half goals, the Lady Barons looked like they would cruise to a win against Elizabethtown Wednesday. But then the

injury bug hit Central and the Bears cashed in opportunities and pulled out a 3-2 double overtime win, securing the game-winner on a header off a corner kick with 4:23 remaining in the second OT. “The girls kept battling throughout the game and we were really proud of their effort,” Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “We have two loses in our first five games, but we’ve only been trailing for 6.5 seconds all season. We keep pressing ahead and the breaks will fall our way at some point.” Central scored first on a goal by Hannah Adair. The play was set up by beautiful spacing and passing. It started with a Tylee Stauffer throw-in to Adair, who kicked a short pass to Summer Bates, who tapped a pass to Abbie Reed. The talented sophomore sent the ball back to Adair, who, with a defender

on her right hip, blasted a left-footed shot into the lower right corner of the net with 26:26 left in the first half. Adair assisted on the second goal, catching up to a pass ahead by Rachel Nolt. Racing down the left side, Adair sent a cross pass to the right side in front of the E-town keeper for an easy tap-in for Reed. In the second half, the Barons lost three players, including Adair, to injuries. Stoltzfus said Adair will miss at least three games. Early in the contest and in the second half, Central’s veteran back line came up big on defense. Goalie Shauna Lukus was “heroic,” Stoltzfus said. “Stopping two penalty kicks, and a handful of breakaways was really impressive,” he said. In a defensive battle, Central and LS tied at 0-0 Monday in Lampeter.

Gardner’s from pg 3 aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs.” McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit us means we are always actively working to help our customers wake up happy and earn a five-star review from them,” McClure said. The Gardner’s team has developed a simple process devoid of buy-it-

today high pressure and dubious sales tactics. “You’ll see us out and about in town. Our faces are on the side of the truck,” Giagnocavo said. “This is our company, and every action is a positive representation of who we are as people and our commitment to helping our neighbors be happier, healthier, and more productive.” Giagnocavo and McClure each have children, who sometimes help to unload trucks or sweep the store, so the business partners hope that Gardner’s may stay in the family and continue to be a meaningful part of Lancaster County residents’ lives. To celebrate the 30th anniversary during October, Gardner’s is offering “30 Days of Prizes & Gifts.” Readers may learn more by visiting the store or www.GardnersMattress AndMore.com/sales.
