Celebrating God’s Goodness Around The World By Chelsea Peifer
When Friends in Action (FIA) International was first approached about the need for well drilling in West Africa in 1998, executive director Tim Johnston traveled to the area with a survey team. He still vividly remembers watching as women knelt in a pond to scoop water into eight-gallon containers to carry on their heads. Meanwhile, across the 500foot pond, cattle sauntered through to relieve themselves and an alligator perched on a fallen tree while birds cleaned its teeth. “People walked 2 to 3 miles to find this dirty water. Then they would let it in pots and have to scoop the top off when they used it, because it was that dirty,” explained Johnston. He mentioned that in some areas the water would be teeming with insects to the point that the water did not stop
moving. “That was my introduction to how desperately (the people of West Africa) needed clean water and why they get sick,” Johnston said. With such a high percentage of illness being waterborne, he noted that giving people access to clean water gives them a much better chance of survival and health. After the need was presented to and approved by the board, FIA started drilling wells in the Ivory Coast before transitioning to Ghana. Work began in Burkina Faso in 2006, where FIA continues to serve. According to Johnston, many people in West Africa often feel no need to hear about another belief system until they see FIA volunteers drilling water they desperately need free of charge. This causes people to pause and opens the door for conversation. “The water is so vital to their livelihood that when you offer something like that to them they want to See Friends In Action pg 5

Craig Heisey and his niece, Victoria Heisey. Craig, the husband of Linda Heisey and father of Chris, Katie, Jessica, and Jon, was an active member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church and a top salesman at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. He passed away in 2007 after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease along with complications of Lyme disease. Victoria, the daughter of Jim and Gloria Heisey of Manheim and the sister of Valerie, was a 2008 Lancaster Mennonite High School graduate, an active member of Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, and a Lock Haven University student studying biology. She died in 2008 due to complications from acute myeloid leukemia. REYS office manager Harrison Burch explained that the purpose of the race is multifaceted, as family, friends, and community members gather to remember and honor the lives of Craig and Victoria, as well as to have a good time and raise funds for REYS. “Last year’s race went really well. Since it’s in the morning and later into the fall, it’s not beastly hot out but it’s not freezing either, so it’s good running weather,” said Burch. who register by Friday, Oct. 19, will be guaranteed to receive a long-sleeve tech race t-shirt. Online registration will remain open through Wednesday, Oct. 31, and race-day registration will open at 7 a.m. The start and finish lines for the race will be located near the high school track. The course goes in a large loop past DHS and Donegal Primary School before turning right, passing a golf course, and crossing a bridge. “It’s a really nice course, and you get to see a variety of stuff as you run,” noted Burch. The race is chip-timed and will be held rain or shine. Free beverages and snacks will be available at the finish line for participants and spectators. Parking will be available in both the DHS and Donegal Junior High School lots. Cash prizes will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. Awards will also be distributed to the top two finishers in various age brackets. Children age 10 and under are invited to run in the Victoria Heisey Fun Run, which will immediately follow the 5K at approximately 9:50 a.m. The fun run is a quarter-mile course, and each participant will receive a
ribbon. Parents are welcome to join their child. There is no cost to participate. All proceeds from the event will benefit the REYS Youth Center, which is located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, and offers after-school programs for students in first through 12th grades on Mondays through Thursdays. Firstthrough seventh-graders meet from 3 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, while eighth- through 12th-graders meet from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A family-style meal is provided for students by volunteers on Thursday evenings. In addition to free afterschool programming, REYS offers music lessons, martial arts classes, academic assistance, and mentoring. Lifecycles, a nonprofit organization focused on building young men of character through Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experiences and mentoring, also meets at REYS from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays from October through April. Boys in grades seven through 12 are welcome to participate. For more details on REYS or the 5K, readers may call 717653-9511 or visit www.reys.org.

Dental Practice Announces New Name, Welcomes New Dentist Philadelphia native, followed in his father’s footsteps and became the third generation of dentists in his family to graduate from Temple. “I was never actually interested in dentistry as a kid, but as I got older I wanted a profession that I could use to help others and work with my hands,” reflected Katz. Dentistry certainly fits those parameters, and today Katz is grateful to be in a position to help transform the lives of his patients through dentistry on a daily basis. Being able to care for people and take them out of excruciating pain is part of what makes being a dentist such a rewarding profession, Katz said. He believes dentistry can not only positively impact a person’s physical health but have a meaningful impact on his or her wellbeing and confidence as well. “Even just a simple aesthetics case can make a huge difference,” Katz remarked. MJP Family Dental provides
comprehensive care and services that include implants and restorations, endodontics (root canal treatments), orthodontics, crowns and veneers, extractions, white filling, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, nonmetallic flexible dentures, low-radiation digital X-rays, teeth whitening, oral cancer screening, and more. “We try to cover all the bases,” Katz stated. Same-day appointments and treatment for emergency situations and 24-hour oncall coverage are also offered. MJP Family Dental is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Additional appointments may be available upon request on Fridays. The practice is accepting new patients. Most insurances are accepted. To schedule an appointment or learn more, readers may visit www.mjpfamilydental.com or call 717-653-2404.

Foliage Ride from pg 1 The Lititz Legion Riders Post 56 will host its 11th annual Fall Foliage Ride on Sunday, Oct. 21. Post 56’s Sons of the American Legion will host a breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. and registration for the ride will begin at 10 a.m. The ride will begin at 11 a.m. Traditionally, the Riders choose a community or veterans organization to receive the funds from the benefit ride. Because weather forced the cancellation of this year’s VA Hospice Ride, Lititz Legion Riders decided to choose the VA Hospice as the beneficiary for the Fall Foliage Ride. The VA Hospice addresses the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the veteran and his or her family during his or her end-of-life
journey. Hospice consists of an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and psychologists who are available to provide support in the areas of medical, nursing and personal care; education and counseling; and emotional, spiritual and bereavement support. Participants will also ride in memory of former Post Service Officer David Little, who passed away in March. The breakfast and the Fall Foliage Ride are open to the public. Both activities have a fee. Pictured on front:

According to the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler website, the event has donated more than $15,000 to the Emily Whitehead Foundation. In 2012, Emily became the first child in history to be treated for her cancer using her own re-engineered T cells. After relapsing from her bout with leukemia, Emily entered a clinical trial at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent this radical new therapy. She almost died and was on life support for two weeks and in a coma, but the doctors at CHOP fought to keep her alive while they addressed the side effects from this new treatment. Emily fought hard too and awoke from her coma on her seventh birthday. Detailed medical tests revealed she was cancer-free. Six years later, Emily’s story continues to See Fighting pg 9

Fighting from pg 7 inspire people as doctors and researchers have built on Emily’s case and now the same treatment is being used to save the lives of many children and adults. The Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to the new treatment in the summer of 2017 so that it could go nationwide and help save the lives of more children. Since then, it has been used internationally. Today, Emily is a healthy and cancer-free 13-year-old. The boys cross country team will tell you he planned to throw the ball more last Friday and have a balanced offensive attack, but the running game was working, so they didn’t have to throw the ball much, just 17 times for 82 yards, to be exact. What they did well was run the ball, rushing 40 times for a whopping 421 yards in an impressive 48-7 triumph against Conestoga Valley on Friday, Oct. 12. Six of Manheim’s seven touchdowns were on rushing plays. Isaac Perron got the scoring started for Central with a sweep to the right side where he cut back inside for an easy four-yard touchdown, capping an 11-play, 71-yard drive. Hahn believes Manheim’s Cayden Warner blocks the Buckskins’ Brandon Camp that was one of keys for his team’s during a Barons’ pass play in their 48-7 win at Conestoga Valley success.
“I think we came off the ball. I think we ran the ball real well,” he said. “Our running game was on point. We blocked well. We were able to execute. I think that was the big difference in the game.” The running game started clicking on the Barons’ third possession, with Tyler Flick, Central’s gifted running back, scoring the first of four touchdowns on the night, bursting untouched up the middle on a draw play for a 30-yard score. He also scored on the Barons’ next possession, sweeping on the left side and racing down the CV sideline for a 50-yard score. He added a 27-yard score where he started up the middle and cut left and raced to pay dirt. His last TD showed his power and speed. On a sweep to the right, Flick stiff-armed a CV defender and then raced down the Central sideline. “He’s just a stud,” Hahn said. “He just doesn’t stop. His second and third and fourth effort, he just keeps going. He’s just a stud for us.” Evan Simon scored on a 22-yard run and also threw a TD pass to Ben Wagner for 29 yards. last Friday. Central had 16 shots and five corners. “The girls were focused, head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said “They knew what they needed to do and, with three goals in the first 13 minutes, took the pressure out of the situation. Erin Greiner had an exceptional game, constantly wreaking havoc in the offensive third. FIELD HOCKEY It was a busy and rewarding week for the Barons, who earned four wins and four shutouts, outscoring their opponents 13-0. They started their dominating week with a 4-0 triumph against Cocalico on Monday, Oct. 8. Lily Sipel scored twice with Lexi Hosler and Jenna Lutz also adding goals. Codi Bollinger, Cami Lehman and Sophia Armato added assists for the Barons, who had 10 shots and four corners. They followed this up with a 5-0 victory against Elizabethtown on Tuesday, Oct. 9. “I was happy for the girls that they were able to score five goals against this team, head coach Morgan Briggs stated. “Freshman Kylie Kroesen had three goals in this game. She was very scrappy and aggressive in the circle and was able to finish some big scoring opportunities for the team. Codi Bollinger had a beautiful shot outside the circle that Lily Sipel got a great tip on. We have been telling the girls to shoot quickly and often. That is starting to sink in more and they were able to get shots off more quickly than earlier in the season. Maisie Dorwart added a goal for the Barons. Bollinger, Sipel and Maddy Barbush added assists. After last Tuesday’s game, the

Elijah Wagner was the Barons’ top finisher again and placed first overall. “He’s had a breakout season, Kennedy said. Carson Hepner and Isaac Martin were third and fourth, respectively.
