Light The Night BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Friday, Oct. 29, keep an eye out for light emanating from Teen Central. This isn’t just light coming from the building at 15 S. Wolf St., but more of a spiritual light. “This is a way for us to gather as a community, with the goal of bringing light to the community through the love of Jesus,” said Shontel

Stoner, activities coordinator. “We want everyone to come out and enjoy spending time together.” Light the Night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature a variety of activities. “We’ll have games set up and face painting plus lots of food,” Stoner noted. “We’ll be serving hot dogs, popcorn, hot chocolate, and we’ll have a cotton candy maker, which was a huge hit last year.” See Light pg 5

Swarr’s unique work blends a picture of a famous musician with sheet music by that artist - literally. Swarr orders sheet music for a particular artist and glues it to the canvas, and then, working from a photograph of the musician associated with that song, he paints the musician’s face over the sheet music. The brainstorm for the series, which includes iconic artists like Aretha Franklin (“Respect”), Jerry Garcia (“Touch of Grey”), and Freddie Mercury (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), began around 2013 when Swarr painted a picture of clarinets while listening to an instrumental version of “Mack the Knife.” He moved

Swarr will be painting at the gallery periodically. He is currently working on a portrait of Mick Jagger with the sheet music for “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” under that iconic face. from there to a rendition of John Lennon in a New York T-shirt painted over the music to “Imagine.” Swarr described the creative process that goes into each portrait in the series, noting that he listens to songs over and over while he is painting to get the feeling of the song. “(Then) I pick out photos (of the relevant musical celebrities) that I think express the feeling of the song.” Using this system, Swarr has painted artists as diverse as Prince (“Purple Rain”), Leonard Cohen (“Hallelujah”), and John Denver (“Take Me Home, Country Roads”).

Only one face in the collection does not have sheet music under the visage. The music to “Jenny From the Block” is located to the left of Jennifer Lopez’s face, reversed out against a black background, in her portrait. “I gained a lot of respect for her when I saw her talking to kids about dance (on television),” said Swarr. “She was really kind.” Swarr purchased the sheet music and went to work. “I did the preliminary (sketches), and I couldn’t put the music on her face,” Swarr recalled. Jim Hoffer, owner of The Lititz Shirt Factory, heard of Swarr when the artist took part in the Lititz Art Association show in Lititz Springs Park in July. Hoffer emailed Swarr about becoming the artist in residence at the Shirt Factory on the floor above Collusion through the end of December 2021.

Light from pg 1 Since the event corresponds with the community trick-or-treat night, people are encouraged to come in costume and to pick up candy at locations in the parking lot of Teen Central. “We’ll have a fire pit set up for s’mores, and we’ll also have farm animals, including goats, for kids to be able to pet,” Stoner stated. Music will round out the festivities.

Teen Central provides Christian-focused activities for youths, but Light the Night is open to everyone. “This is an event for all ages, and not just for the students who come to Teen Central,” Stoner noted, adding that Teen Central partners

with local churches to host Light the Night. “There’s really opportunities and experiences for all ages to enjoy.” She said last year’s event drew about 400 people, and she expects many to return this year. “We had a lot of great feedback from last year,

October 20, 2021 - 5

and we’re really looking forward to meeting more people this year,” she remarked. “It’s a great way to meet your neighbors, have fun and pick up a little extra candy when you’re out trick or treating.” For more information on Light the Night, call Teen Central at 717-664-2990 or check out the Teen Central Manheim Facebook and Instagram page.

Barons Win Twice, Qualify for League Playoffs BY ERIC G. STARK

The Barons collected two wins last week. They beat E-town 1-0 on Oct. 7, getting a goal by Brayden Dombach at the 63-minute mark. Peter Burkhart earned the assist. Dylan Smith had two saves. Manheim followed this with a 5-0 victory over Cedar Crest on Oct. 2. The Barons scored three goals in the first half by Dombach, Gabe Redcay and Connor Caterbone. Redcay assisted on Photo by Cheri Sine Dombach’s goal. Aaron Mowrer Manheim’s Luke Redcay wins a head ball over E-town’s Dex Kelly aided on Redcay’s score. Caterbone scored his second during the Barons’ 1-0, Section Two win at home on October 7. goal in the 41st minute and Aaron Mowrer scored off a pass from Aiden Beck 53 minutes into the action. By finishing second in Section Two, the boys qualified the league playoffs. VOLLEYBALL The Manheim Central girls’ volleyball team dominated Cocalico and cruised to a 3-0 victory on game scores of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-8 in Denver on Oct. 7. “They (Cocalico) didn’t challenge us as much with aggressive service and any free balls that came over, they weren’t down balls or there wasn’t a back row ball,” said Barons’ coach Jason Moyer. “That makes it a little bit easier for us to run our offense.” And run their offense they did, very efficiently. Moyer held up a clipboard and whispered to spot Ages 16 + and the server delivered pinpoint accuracy. Rachel Nolt, Reagan Nissley and Grace Stoltzfus took care of the offense, providing big kills to specific areas on the court. They were hitting their spot and playing balls to certain Eagle players and if it was returned, there wasn’t any kind of attack.

The goal, Moyer said, was to the keep the ball away from Kara Gerhart, the talented Cocalico junior. “We kept it away from her and everyone else on her team had to step up and they just couldn’t fill that void,” Moyer said. “Being able to hit spots between people or picking somebody that wasn’t as good of a passer really made a difference for us.” Tied 3-3 in the first game, Central scored the next four points with Emma Moyer serving two aces during the run. Gabby Fittery’s kill put the Barons up 10-7 and a spike by Moyer, block by Stoltzfus and a kill by Natalie Siegrist put Manheim ahead 13-9. The Barons put the match away for good with a 5-0 run that gave them a 24-10 lead. During the two big runs that resulted in nine points, Moyer was serving. Stoltzfus, had 24 assists in the match. Emma Moyer and Nolt had nine and seven kills, respectively. Moyer added three aces. Siegrist had three blocks. Damon and Nissley had nine and seven digs, respectively. CROSS COUNTRY The Lady Barons beat Garden Spot 17-43, capturing the Section Two title. It was the first championship for cross country since 2015. Sophomore Julie Lindberg was out in front with a time of 21:42. Five other Central runners placed in the top eight. They included Reagan Ibach, Jenna Moffett, Olivia Sunderland, Alaina Bruckhart and Maddie Hoffman. For the boys, Michael Greenwald and Garden Spot’s Alan Krock crossed the finish line together in 18:04.05. The Spartans took five of the next six positions to earn a 22-36 victory. second-best runner at No.5. FOOTBALL Judd Novak threw for four touchdowns and 270 yards and Manheim bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 3521 victory over Solanco on Oct. 8. Tied at 21-21, Novak connected with Owen Sensenig for a 16yard passing TD to put the Baron ahead 28-21. After a big defensive stop around the 50-yard line, Novak scampered for 55 yards for a TD late in the fourth quarter. Justin Hefferman rushed for 55 yards and caught two passes for 10 yards and a TD. Sensenig caught nine passes for 105 yards, while Larry Marley added four receptions for 60 yards. Jade Weit and Logan Hostetter also caught TD passes. Defensively, Bode Sipel had 14 tackles and Nick Hass added 13. TENNIS Gabby Wettig and Brianna Mylin are district-bound. The duo defeated the higher-ranked Lampeter-Strasburg tennis doubles team in the LancasterLebanon League quarterfinals on Oct. 2. After losing the first set 4-6, they battled back for a 6-1, 10-8 victory. The win earned them a spot in the District Three tournament, which will take place at the Hershey Racquet Club on Oct. 22. Manheim’s No. 2 doubles team of Sammi Williams and Holly Miller and the No. 3 tandem of Sydney Peters and Kami Groff made it to the league semis before being eliminated by Elizabethtown and L-S, respectively. FIELD HOCKEY Manheim lost 3-2 to a hightouted Northern team that is ranked third in Class AA. Kiley Hosler tied the game at 2-2, finding the back of the cage at 10:34 in the fourth quarter on Oct. 1. “Friday was a very tough game,” Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said. “Northern York was Photo by Cheri Sine very talented, and we had a hard Aaron Mowrer maneuvers past E-town’s Juan Lopez in Man- time stopping their leading scorheim’s 1-0, Section Two victory over the visiting Bears on Octo- er, Brynn Crouse. Still, we capiber 7. talized on our opportunities; we

had two corners and scored goals on both. Unfortunately, we couldn’t stop their attack as much we should have.” Manheim bounced back the next morning for a 2-0 triumph over Crest. Hosler scored unassisted at 6:54 of the first period. Ella Brubaker wrapped up the scoring in the fourth with an unassisted goal. Keeper Avery Wagner had five saves. “We bounced back quickly,” Briggs said. “We played a solid all-around game and were happy to win.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Barons bounced back from two tough losses with an impressive 6-1 win against Fleetwood on Oct. 2. It was one of Manheim’s best of games of the season. After a scoreless game for the first 25 minutes, Manheim scored four times in a 14-minute span. Hannah Adair (twice), Abbie Reed, Kaylee Neff, and Summer Bates (twice) all scored in the game. “It was a good bounce back win after a tough back-to-back stretch in mid-week,” Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “We started off really strong and took advantage of our opportunities. The attack was well balanced, and we moved the ball well through midfield. They had a very strong forward, but our defense worked as a team to shut down the opportunities she had.” Adair and Bates continued a hot scoring spree, and Stoltzfus said the two are playing some of the best soccer of their careers this year. Adair (19 goals overall and 12 in the section) leads the section in goals and Bates (12 assists overall, 11 in the section) leads the section in assists. “It’s a great combo and we’ve really relied on them this year,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that Adair has six assists and Bates has five goals. Reed has chipped in nine league goals and 11 overall. She also has five assists in the section and seven overall.

The goal of Children’s Playroom, Dolan noted, is to help parents develop positive parenting skills and improve their parent-child relationships. Parents also learn to develop realistic expectations for young children while exploring developmentally appropriate activities for their children.
