Makenna’s Big Thank-You Parade BY FRANCINE FULTON

o thank her many supporters and to celebrate the end of her cancer treatments, Makenna Linder took part in a parade through Manheim on Oct. 3 during which the 6-year-old and her family were chauffeured along a parade route lined with community members, many of whom wore PinkOutforMcKenna T-shirts while holding signs and pink balloons. Makenna, a student at Baron Elementary School, was dressed as a princess in her favorite color of pink, as she rode aboard a fire truck named Howie, owned by Duane and Gina Ober. The truck made stops at all the local businesses who helped raised money for the family during Makenna’s battle with cancer. Many of the businesses in the town held monthly Pink Out Days during which employees were encouraged to wear pink or Pink Out for Makenna T-shirts that were sold as a fundraiser. “We stopped at eight different businesses who did fundraisers for Makenna throughout all of this and at the Manheim Central Middle School, said Makenna’s mother, Amanda. “We also drove through Pleasant View Retirement Community. They also did fundraising and Pinked Out every month. We ended at Baron Elementary. At the school, people gathered for a socially-distanced celebration that featured the band and cheerleaders from Manheim Central High School. The parade was organized by Julie Reed, Makenna’s kindergarten teacher from last year. Knowing Makenna loves the color pink, Reed held a school-wide surprise Pink Out for Makenna at the school in January. “We were socially distant, so it was not the same type of Pink Out as the original one, but we are glad we are able to celebrate with her, said Reed. Amanda said that Makenna enjoyed the parade, especially when her brother Bradyn dressed up as a pink unicorn. “It helped her mentally to see everyone supporting her and rallying around her. She

went through a lot, said Amanda. “Just seeing all the people was amazing for her.

“It helped her mentally to see everyone supporting her and rallying around her. She went through a lot, said Amanda. “Just seeing all the people was amazing for her. “We appreciate everybody’s support and fundraising from all the local businesses and people personally. We got cards and letters and she got presents all throughout the year, Amanda added. To view the parade, readers may visit www.youtube.com and search for “#PinkOutForMakenna Celebration Parade (10-3-2020). In 2017, Makenna was diagnosed

with a Stage II Wilms tumor that necessitated the removal of a kidney. Makenna underwent 18 weeks of chemotherapy treatments. By the end of February 2019, Makenna was cleared to go six months before her next check-up. In November 2019, however, the doctors discovered that Makenna was suffering from a rare form of cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), after which additional chemotherapy treatments began. The final Pink Out for Makenna was held on Sept. 25, as Makenna had her last chemotherapy treatment at Hershey Medical Center. Reed and other staff members traveled to “Pink Out Makenna’s home on that day, where they decorated her yard with pink flamingoes. Also on that day, students and staff members across the school district wore pink, as well as Pink Out bracelets with a new slogan, “Be Brave - Be Kind - Be You. #MakennaStrong.

The young couple at a dinner party that Valley Farm Supply owners J.C. and Caren Remsberg attended was frustrated with the challenges facing their small trucking company: hiring people, growing the business, and even the possibility of returning to work for someone else. The Remsbergs were empathetic, and they passed along the same advice J.C. had received from a college friend who owns a logging business. “Nothing is better than being on your own as a businessperson, and he knew that, J.C. related. “We really talked SCORE up to him and (that) he needs to be in the next Simple Steps program. See SCORE pg 3

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

Schedule your flu shot today at LGHealth.org/Schedule.

“SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is an active chapter of professional mentors who are here to help people who want to start or optimize their business,” explained certified mentor and education committee chair Catherine Bonser. “This is a service available to small businesses at no charge to them.” The local SCORE chapter offers one-to-one mentoring as well as educational programs, including the flagship “Simple Steps for Starting a Business.” Simple Steps involves five two-hour sessions - currently conducted online - in which experienced professionals cover business planning, funding, legal considerations, marketing, and other subjects. “The Simple Steps program was excellent and helped answer a lot of basic questions we had about business,” J.C. said. “ We got to hear from other new and potential business owners in the program and heard what they wanted to achieve.” Simple Steps alumna and

Sage Heart Studio owner Ramona Ndlovu also found the program helpful. “It was an encouragement to see so many other small business owners and hopefuls giving entrepreneurship a try. I was not alone,” she said. “Some of my classmates had already been running successful businesses, and it was especially helpful to hear their questions, insights, and ways of solving challenges.” Ndlovu appreciated the opportunity to ask specific questions about her business, which enabled her to determine what she could do on her own and where she might need to hire experts. At the first session, she learned about important paperwork she needed to file with a state agency. “The course provided helpful, timely, and thorough information for supporting the growth of my business. According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth.

That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and worldclass historical sites. Traveling locally can have a big impact on small businesses without having a big impact on your wallet. Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling

manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners

Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better, and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base

and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store, McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum, Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Gardner’s Mattress from pg 6 my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tempur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full

force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-to-consumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges.” Buying mattresses is a highly

subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest quality mattresses at each price point possible, and yet, when we put 10 people on any one mattress, we will get 10 very different opinions,” he said. “Our bodies are all built differently, and we all have unique aches and pains along with some having intense medical issues. While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs.” McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit us means we are always actively working to help our customers wake up

happy and earn a five-star review from them,” McClure said. The Gardner’s team has developed a simple process devoid of buy-it-today high pressure and dubious sales tactics. “You’ll see us out and about in town. Our faces are on the side of the truck,” Giagnocavo said. “This is our company, and every action is a positive representation of who we are as people and our commitment to helping our neighbors be happier, healthier, and more productive.” Giagnocavo and McClure each have children, who sometimes help to unload trucks or sweep the store, so the business partners hope that Gardner’s may stay in the family and continue to be a meaningful part of Lancaster County residents’ lives. To celebrate the 30th anniversary during October, Gardner’s is offering “30 Days of Prizes & Gifts.” Readers may learn more by visiting the store or www. GardnersMattressAndMore .com/sales.

Lady Barons Blank Visiting Spartans 3-0

BY ERIC G. STARK

Abbie Reed tracked down then battled a defender to force a corner kick. Rachel Nolt delivered the corner from the left side to the middle of the goal and Summer Bates, in traffic, served a header into the net about 48 minutes into the contest. Nearly a minute later, it was 2-0 as Tylee Stauffer broke away from a

defender and sent a shot on goal from about 30 yards out. The ball hit the right post, eluding the diving Manheim found the back of the goaltender. The ball rolled back to net early and often in the second the middle of the field and Stauffer half during a 3-0 shutout of Garden followed-up with a slow-roller into Spot last Monday in girls’ soccer. the left corner of the net with 30:58 About nine minutes into the secremaining. ond half (31:49), junior defender Manheim made it 3-0 when Grace Cassell lifted a high-arching Corinne King’s left-footed corner pass down the left sideline that kick found the right foot of Abby Knapp, who placed the ball into the back of the net for her first varsity goal. “It was nice to see our offense get a few goals,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “We also got good minutes from some of our up-andcoming younger players. With a few injuries it is good to see them stepping up.” MC’s strong defense was on display as Central’s veteran back line Stauffer, a four-year starter and Cassel, a three-year starter, came up big on defense. In the middle, Rachel Merrill provides muscle and Olissa Clingenpeel speed, Stoltzfus said. All four have high game IQ and he trusts their decision making. Central beat McCaskey 4-0 Wednesday, getting goals by Stauffer, Bates, Abby Knapp and Makenna Enck. Goalie Shauna Lukus had one save. MC beat Lampeter-Strasburg, 1-0, last Saturday, getting the only goal of the game by Bates about 16 minutes into the second half. Lukas had seven saves. The Barons’ 3-0 win in last Monday’s Section Two match in Manheim. Lady Barons trailed 1-0 at halftime before tying the game on a goal by Jenna Lutz at 9:30 into the third quarter. She also tied the game at 2-2 with a minute remaining in regulation.

Monica Herman had an assist in the contest. Central had four corners and seven shots. Manheim goalie Avery Wagner had five saves. MC dropped another heart-breaker, losing 2-1 in overtime against Elizabethtown Friday. Lutz scored in the fourth quarter. Wagner had seven saves. As of Oct. 19, Kylie Kroesen and Lutz were seventh and 11th in the league in scoring, respectively. Kroesen has six goals and two assists. Lutz has five goals and two assists. As of Oct. 11, Wagner had 69 saves on 89 shots for a save percentage of 77.53 percent, good for second in the league. FOOTBALL The Barons lost 41-35 to Conestoga Valley last Friday. Manheim trailed 4121early in the fourth quarter, but never stopped battling. Owen Sensenig snagged an interception with 7:07 left in the game that led to a Judd Novak 16-yard touchdown pass to Westley Borden. Logan Skull kicked the extra point to make it 41-28 with 5:05 remaining. The Barons’ defense forced the Buckskins to punt and two plays later Novak threw a 38-yard TD pass over the shoulder of Sensenig in the end zone, cutting the lead to 41-35 with 3:12 left. Manheim forced and recovered a fumble with 25 seconds remaining and were driving when time ran out. “We have to find a way to win one of these close ones,” said head coach Dave Hahn after his club fell to a 1-4 record on the season. “We lose by six this week. We lose by seven last week (Solanco). You got to find a way to pull one of those out. We are there. We got to find a way and we just haven’t yet.”

Michael Greenwald (18:58), also a junior, was right on Garman’s heels for 11th place. Judah Bruckhart (19:44) was 13th and Nicholas Bair (20:21) was 18th. VOLLEYBALL Last Tuesday was senior night, so there were some additional emotions that changed the normal flow of things, Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said. The Barons dropped the first game, 21-25, before rallying for a 25-9, 25-20, 25-14 win against Lampeter-Strasburg. “In the first game we didn’t pass as well as we have been lately and slowed our offense,” Moyer said. “Our serving helped us pull through that and stay in the game. Once our passing came back, we were able to control the next three games. Our serving kept them out of system and kept the ball away from their strongest players.” Madison Knier served five aces and added eight blocks. Emma Moyer had six kills, Grace Stoltzfus dished out 18 assists, and Amber Kaufman collected eight digs.

The Barons started fast. Two minutes into the game, sophomore Nate Reed put Manheim on the scoreboard. Quinlann Kaufman assisted on the goal. Seven minutes into the contest Connor Caterbone sent a pass to Gabe Redcay, who found the back of the net to put MC ahead 2-1. Central had six corners and eight shots. Goalie Wesley Bates stopped five shots for the Barons. Last Monday Garden Spot defeated Manheim 4-2 and LampeterStrasburg won 3-2 Friday, Oct. 9. Ketema is planning to prepare even larger quantities for the upcoming meal. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be added to the $4,000 raised through last month’s meal and put toward the purchase of a machine used to test blood chemistry levels. Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Demeke Getahun, who is married to Ketema and is the pastor at EECL, noted that the organization, which founded and operates a free health clinic providing urgent and routine medical care in Harar, Ethiopia, will get the machine for a reduced price. “It is more than $30,000, but as a nonprofit, we will get it for $25,000,” Getahun said. “It is very expensive equipment.” Having blood testing equipment on-site at the clinic is in part a requirement by the

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC.
