Tapas Shindig To Support North Star Initiative By Chelsea Peifer

On Thursday, Nov. 7, North Star Initiative will host a Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. North Star Initiative began operating The Harbor, Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, in 2017. “The common remark I get from people is, ‘Trafficking is really happening here in Lancaster County?’ And it is,” shared Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative director of development. “It’s important to become aware of what’s going on and to know the facts so you can share them with other people.” Esbenshade said that the Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. will help people to understand more about the issue and how they can support the ministry of

North Star Initiative. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered. The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy! Though I fall, I will rise; though I sit in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.” The Harbor is designed to provide a safe haven for women ages 18 to 40 who are survivors of sex trafficking. It has capacity for up to 10 residents at a time. Esbenshade explained that The Harbor Restoration Program aims to provide psychological, physical, emotional, and See Tapas Shindig pg 3

Leadership from pg 1 Coaches - or any leaders - set the standard for a team, but Parnham emphasized that standards of excellence cannot be imposed by coaches alone. He encouraged the audience to play to the strengths of those they lead. “If you want exceptional results, you have to create exceptional circumstances,” Parnham noted. Calling out an individual’s strengths often yields greater success than harping on the bad, which has the opposite effect of not building confidence. “I’ve never met anybody that likes to be shouted at or abused in front of their peers it just doesn’t work,” said Parnham. “Success leaves clues. Focus on the most important areas and make them trademark behaviors.” Prior to his current role, Parnham served as head coach of the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team (USWNT), guiding it to fifth place for its highest

International Hockey Federation Hero World Ranking in recent history. The team, whose official training grounds are at Spooky Nook Sports, went on to the 2016 Rio Olympics, where it earned a fifth-place finish. Under his leadership as coach, the team also won gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2014 Champions Challenge, earned fourth place at the 2014 Rabobank World Cup, and took a bronze medal at the 2016 Champions Trophy. In 2015, the United States Olympic Committee recognized Parnham as 2015 National Coach of the Year. As a field hockey player, Parnham competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games for Great Britain, as well as the 2002 World Cup. He also coached Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. In addition to leadership lessons from Parnham, Leadership Inspired included a luncheon and celebration of out-

standing local leadership through the announcement of the 2019 recipients of the Connect and Educate awards. The Connect Award, which honors those who provide opportunities for connecting individuals and organizations in an effort to maximize collective wisdom, went to the Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA). NLA is a six-session training and grant program designed to empower community leaders in Lancaster city neighborhoods. The initiative was made possible by a collaboration of the City of Lancaster, Lancaster County Community Foundation, and Leadership Lancaster. The Educate Award was given to James Cowhey for demonstrating a commitment to educating community leaders and exemplifying qualities of a servant leader. Cowhey recently retired as the executive director of the Lancaster County Plan-

ning Commission. He began serving on the commission staff in 1988 and became executive director in 2005. Following the program, the sponsors of Leadership Inspired received a VIP tour of the USA Field Hockey team’s space at Spooky Nook Sports led by current players Kelly Marks, Kealsie Robles, and Nicole Woods. Leadership Lancaster was established in 1983 by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Junior League of Lancaster County with a mission of developing outstanding community leadership to support the needs of the county. More than 2,500 people have participated in its programs, which include a nine-month Core Program, the Executive Class, a College Core Class, Leadership Advantage, and the Board Leadership Academy. Director Kevin Ditzler described the themes of “The Crucible” as timeless and relevant. “(‘The Crucible’) looks at who is to blame in all of this, and the audience will be trying to figure out how people were duped into this,” Ditzler said. “We want the audience to feel the hysteria the people of Salem felt, and attempting to do that really excited me to take on this show.” Ditzler has 20 years of experience directing shows at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and has acted in numerous SSC performances. This will be his first time directing an SSC production. Rachel Snyder of Mount Joy will portray 17-year-old orphan Abigail Williams, who works as a

live-in housekeeper for John and Elizabeth Proctor until she is kicked out by Elizabeth. “(Abigail) twists the truth so much and makes the whole town believe her lies,” Snyder said. “The tension throughout the show builds for itself,” noted Tom Sharpes of Lancaster, who will portray John. “You really identify with these characters and want them to make the right decisions. The writing is brilliant.” Madeline Ruth Pickens, who will play Elizabeth, agreed and described her character as having many layers. “It’s just so intricate. Her thought life is such a battle and trying to communicate that to the audience is difficult. I want to do that justice.” “(‘The Crucible’) is one of those shows that is always relevant, and there are still truths that can be found in it today,” added Pickens. Additional cast members include Jordan Ross Weinhold, Duane Hespell, Sharon Boyer, Steve Hassinger, Jack Hartman, Bill Ryan, David Kloser, Kelly Warren, Shekinah Qalo, Lydia Alkinburgh, Grayson Marz, Brian Noffke, Jim Johnson, Isabella Astuto, Ashley Gage, Charis Alkinburgh, and Sophie Eckman.

When Wegayhu Ketema traveled to her hometown of Harar, Ethiopia, in May 2018, she took the time to revisit the rock where her dreams of nursing began. As she would wait on the rock for the school day to start, Ketema would see a nurse walk by. Ketema’s admiration of the medical professional inspired her to become a nurse. Sixteen months after her stop at the rock, Ketema returned to Ethiopia, but this time, she visited her former school. And, this time, she was the nurse inspiring others. Ketema and her husband, Demeke Getahun, are the founders and directors of Siloam Ethiopia, a nonprofit organization that has the goal to provide free health care to the poorest of Ethiopia’s residents while also meeting spiritual and emotional needs. Getahun is the pastor of Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL), 175 Church St., Landisville, and Ketema is a registered nurse and works at a Harrisburg-area rehab hospital. The couple has worked with Immanuel Church in Harar to open Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic in a rented building in Harar. “I believe that the vision that Demeke and Wegayhu have for radically changing areas of Ethiopia through meeting physical and spiritual needs is possible through God’s love for the people,” commented Siloam Ethiopia board member John Lehman. “(I’m motivated by) the goal that poverty can be changed and the people of Ethiopia can have abundant life.”

Things are going well at the clinic, which launched during Ketema’s May 2018 visit and has seen more than 1,000 clients, so the ministry has begun the process of expanding its reach. Rather than spend the money to rent other facilities, Siloam Ethiopia has partnered with three rural schools to use as satellite clinics. A traveling nurse will visit each school on a regular basis to provide health care to the community. One of the host schools is the one Ketema attended as a child. During Ketema’s trip to Ethiopia in September 2019, the school gave her a copy of her transcript, which includes headshots of both Ketema and her mother. In addition to establishing satellite clinics at the three schools during her last visit, Ketema met with the Ministry of Education, which presented Siloam Ethiopia with a certificate of recognition for the satellite clinics; launched weekly health visits to the approximately 75 residents of a segregated poor village and a government-run nursing home; met with a woman who may be able to dig the rest of the wells Siloam Ethiopia hopes to build at the rural schools; and established relationships with builders and other Ethiopian-Americans who want to serve their home country. Ketema’s stay also included several visits with the girls who are being cared for in a small orphanage run by Siloam Ethiopia in Babile. To support this work, Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraising dinner at EECL on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 7 p.m. Getahun and Ketema will prepare a buffet meal of traditional Ethiopian food, and diners may learn about what has been accomplished by the ministry. Takeouts will be available. Reservations are not required, but for planning purposes, readers are asked to email siloamethio@gmail.com to indicate their plans to attend. To learn more about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may email the organization or visit www.siloamethio.org.

Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Wegayhu Ketema (right) was part of the launch of home visits conducted by clinic staffers during her visit in September. An Ethiopian meal in Landisville on Oct. 26 will raise funds for the ministry.

(NSDAR), as well as two members who are also senior representatives of the George Ross Society, National Society Children of the American Revolution (NSCAR), attended a Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (PSSDAR) South Central District meeting on Aug. 24. The event was hosted by the Witness Tree DAR Chapter at the Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church Solarium. The PSSDAR South Central District spans 13 counties in addition to Lancaster County, and representatives of DAR Chapters and CAR Societies from the various counties attended the meeting to network as volunteers and leaders. They also sought to raise awareness and funds for the newest PSSDAR state service project: the restoration of the Robert Morris stained-glass window at the George Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. The chapel was built as a living memorial to President George Washington; its art and architecture describe American history. Pennsylvania state regent Elizabeth Watkins, the keynote speaker, shared how water has eroded the chapel’s stone carvings, stained the walls, and damaged the windows. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster will accept applications for multisensory language training in Orton-Gillingham. The 12-month training program will lead to Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc. (CDC) certified dyslexia practitioner 1 (CDP-1) designation. Orton-Gillingham is a structured, sequential approach to multisensory language remediation. Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree and be willing to commit time to training and after-school tutoring. All clearances required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including Act 31, must be submitted prior to the beginning of training. The cost of these background checks will be borne by the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, provided the trainee completes the training. This training program is suitable for all teachers, but is especially relevant to those in the fields of reading, special education, and ELL. However, a background in the field of education is not required. This program is also ideal for retirees with a love of learning who want to make a difference in the life of a child. The training program is accredited by The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and International Dyslexia Association, which sets the standards for rigor and length of training. Requirements consist of commitment to a minimum of 50 lecture hours and a minimum of 100 hours of supervised student practicum. Student practicum consists of two students seen one-on-one for two hours a week after school hours. Required readings and tests are additional requirements. Training will begin in March 2020, with projected completion for May. Trainees may opt to take the training for free, with a materials fee. Graduate credit is also available for a fee. Trainees would need to enroll for the course to earn six credits. At the completion of training, 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded free of charge. For more information and an application, readers may contact the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster at 717-481-5680 or cdclancasterpa@gmail.com. Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at multiple locations across the state. The in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. Penn State Extension will hold two ServSafe Food Safety Manager Courses in November at the Lancaster Extension in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The evening course will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, and Thursday, Nov. 14. The certification exam will be on Monday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. Additionally, a daytime course will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov.13, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be on Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. There is a course fee, which includes a copy of the most recent edition of the “ServSafe Manager” book, exam, answer sheet, and learning materials. For further information about the course, readers may contact Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851. Registrations can be made at https://extension.psu.edu/servsa fe or by calling 877-345-0691.

Lady Booters Advance To L-L League Final by Eric G. Stark

Hannah Adair said one of her team’s goals is to always play with heart, on and off the field. That heart was on display last week, as the Barons advanced to the Lancaster-Lebanon League championship. They showed plenty of heart in the finals, competing with a man disadvantage in the second half. Ephrata secured a 1-0 win in the championship on Thursday, Oct. 17, scoring in the 66th minute, after a Baron was given a red card, forcing Manheim to play with one less player on the field. The team still played great defense had several scoring opportunities. “The turning point of the game was the red card,” said Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus, who did not have a good view of the penalty. “We had the better of the chances in the first half and their keeper came up big. “Having to play down a player for most of the second half, we were still able to generate some good chances as well. (Manheim goalie) Mia Reed made some incredible saves, including the penalty kick that was a result of the red card.” Reed stopped eight Ephrata shots. Despite the loss, Stoltzfus and Adair believe their team is playing well right now. That wasn’t always the case for Adair. The talented sophomore struggled at the beginning of the season and admitted her confidence was down. She’s turned the corner and is playing well, as evident by her two goals in the 2-0 league-semifinal win against Cocalico on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Barons played with a purpose and a sense of confidence. “We’ve been here, that’s what we told the girls,” Stoltzfus said. “Whether it is the district final or the (league) semifinals last year, we’re used to playing big games and playing deep into the post season. It is not an occasion that was too big for us.” He said Autumn Greiner and MaKenna Copley have played in two district finals and Adair scored the game-winning goal in the district final last year. “These are girls that have been

there and done that,” he said, “and it was just a normal game for them and they played that way.” Adair said her first goal against the Eagles reminded her of the goal in the district finals. She got the ball and her back was to the goal. She took a touch, saw a defender she believed she could beat and slid a shot past the near post. The second goal came on a pass from Kelly Abrahamson, who saw Adair inside. Adair said the defense expected her to pass the ball to Kaylee Neff, so she kept the ball and, with her left foot, floated a shot over the out-stretched hand of the goalie with 14:22 remaining in the game. The girls begin the District Three playoffs and host Bishop McDevitt at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. CROSS COUNTRY On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon in Ephrata, the Baron harriers competed in the L-L League cross country championships. Olivia Sunderland was the top finisher for Lady Barons. She earned a medal with a 23rd place finish, running 20:58.4. Isabella Reber finished 70th overall with a time of 22:49. Madelyn Hoffman ran a 23:08.0 for 78th place. Jenna Moffet, 24:12.6, was 99th and Kylie Bannister, 26:44.6, was 129th. For the boys, Elijah Wagner,

Michael Greenwald, and Isaac Martin were just outside of the top 50. Wagner was 51st overall, running 17:53.7. Greenwald was right on his heels, posting a time of 17:54.1 to place 52nd. Martin was in their shadows, closing fast at 54th, running 17:57.1 Bailey Garman (18:42.7) and Brady Knier (18:51.5) were 87th and 95th, respectively. “Overall it was a good day for us in an L-L League meet that is becoming more competitive every year,” Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said. All the runners that competed in leagues will also run at districts on Saturday, Oct. 26.at Big Spring High School.

FIELD HOCKEY Manheim Central lost 1-0 to Manheim Township in the quarterfinals of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Penn Manor High School. The teams were tied 0-0 at intermission, and Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said her team had difficulty establishing its offense. MC only generated three corners and two shots. Defensively, the Barons played well to keep the game close. The Blue Streaks scored 14:51 into the second half. Baron goalie Mikayla Regan stopped nine Township shots. “Defensively we looked strong but struggled finding each other,” Briggs said. “Most of the game was played between the 25s.” Central moves on to the District Three playoffs and will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hempfield High School against Susquehannock. The Barons enter the Class 2A tourney as the No. 6 seed. Susquehannock is the 11th seed. FOOTBALL The first seven touchdowns Friday, Oct. 18 were by Manheim, as the Barons rolled to a 63-13 victory over Garden Spot. Central’s offense is heating up. With the win, Manheim clinched at least a tie for the Section Two title. It is their fifth section title in a row and 26th championship overall. The Barons offense tallied 584 yards (253 rushing and 331 passing).

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition Quarterback Evan Simon was 12-of-13 passes for 331 yards. He was 9-of-10 passing in the first half for 224 yards, as Central scored 49 points in the first half. Simon, who threw for four touchdowns and rushed for two more, became the league’s third all-time leading passer. Colby Wagner, who was on the receiving end of two of those passing TDs, now has 1,041 yards receiving on the season. His brother, Ben and J.D. Grube also had TD catches. VOLLEYBALL The Barons finished the season on a strong note, beating LampeterStrasburg, 3-1. The Barons took the first game 25-13 and held off the Pioneers in the second game, 25-21. L-S didn’t go down without a fight, winning the third game, 25-16. MC responded well, taking the fourth game, 25-20. Gina Stoltzfus had a big game for the Barons. The sophomore had three aces and 19 assists. At the net, Maddie Knier had six kills and Elena Kready added three blocks. Defensively, Amber Kauffman had 11 digs. Senior middle blocker Tori Henderson, middle blocker Knier, and Stoltzfus, a setter/outside hitter were

recently named Section Two All-Stars in the L-L League. Emma Moyer, a sophomore middle blocker, was named an academic all-star. Head coach Jason Moyer made some personnel moves before the season and it paid off, he said. He talked about his all-stars. “This year we moved Tori (Henderson) from middle hitter to outside hitter to take advantage of her passing skills,” Moyer said. “She really stepped up and filled a void for us. Grace Stoltzfus really matured in the off season. She is quicker to the ball and her defense is night and day from last year. She has really made an impact with her serving as well. Madison is a freshman but is a real athlete and has been a physical force for us at the net. She has been able to transition her basketball skills to the volleyball court and will be an impact player for years to come.” Manheim is seeded 11th for the District Three playoffs and is matched up against James Buchanan, the sixth seed, in the first round of districts, which begin 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at Garden Spot High School. This is the first time in six years that the Barons have qualified for districts.

Youths Attend Annual Conference Young members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake, Lancaster and York Counties, attended their church’s annual Youth Conference from July 18 to 20 on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown. A total of 93 men and women ages 14 to 18 from all seven wards and two branches of the Lancaster Stake participated. The Church stated that the purpose of the conference is for youths to build faith in Jesus Christ, strengthen their testimonies, develop their talents, make new friends, and have fun with peers who share similar beliefs and standards. Youth conferences are usually held once each year during the summer on a ward level, with each congregation holding its own conference, or on a stake level, with all congregations in a large geographical area combining. This stake youth conference was planned and carried out by the Stake Aaronic Priesthood - Young Women Committee under the direction of stake president Conrad Knudson of York. The youths were invited to assist the committee as much as possible in planning the conference. The youths first selected a Gospel theme for the conference. They could choose a Scripture, a quotation from a prophet, or another theme. The theme this year was “Survivor - Overcoming Challenges, Overcoming Fears.” The youths planned activities, such as devotionals, group meetings, learning experiences, sports activities, and service projects that were consistent with the theme. On the first night, participants attended a luau complete with a pig roasted by Philip Sherffy, a Scouting committee member. The event was held on Elizabethtown College’s Brinser Field, which was decorated with a Hawaiian theme and included a photo booth. Youths from the Harrisburg Stake joined

Youth Conference participants (from left) Trent McBride, Payson Elmore and Bryce Popolis, along with Trent’s father, Adam McBride, played tennis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored its annual Youth Conference in July. the Lancaster Stake members for the event. The conference also included Etiquette Night, organized and led by young men’s stake president Monte Ward and his wife, Jennifer. Youths were transported to the Lancaster Stake building, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, and in their Sunday best, they first spent time learning about proper etiquette and then ate a meal served by elders in the stake. The young men and young women practiced their new skills in proper dining etiquette. The event concluded with a dance in the cultural hall, where the youths and adults practiced their dance etiquette skills. Another special activity was a three-part Eagle Scout service project organized by Derek Brown from Troop 184 of the Shrewsbury Ward. Prior to the conference, Derek placed boxes in the foyers of the churches in the stake for member donations of useful items to give to various groups in need and to help the Eagle Scout candidate complete his goal. At the conference, attendees sorted the contributions and decorated and filled bags with items that would then be donated to Veterans Affairs for deployed members of the military and those in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon, as well as the pediatric ward at

York Hospital. Deployed individuals received beverage packets, while men and women at the VA Hospital received puzzle books and small hygiene items, including deodorant, body wash, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Patients at York Hospital received toys and games, such as puzzles, stuffed animals, craft

kits, coloring books and crayons. Each evening of the Youth Conference ended with a devotional within groups divided into tribes, and each morning started with a devotional given by invited members from the Stake. The final morning of the Youth Conference included workshops on special subject matters chosen by the youths. Youths could learn more about patriarchal blessings, improve upon social skills when interacting with other young people, and attend “Survival 101” to learn the basic skills needed when one leaves home. The Youth Conference ended with a special testimony meeting conducted by president Allen Zerbe of the stake presidency. Upon their return from the Youth Conference, many of the young men and women reported to their congregations the following Sunday. Members of the bishopric or stake presidency were invited to attend as much of the conference as possible. Leaders of the church’s groups for young men and young women were encouraged to attend the entire conference.

Youths of the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prepared thank-you and getwell bags for deployed members of the military, hospitalized veterans in Lebanon, and children in the pediatric ward at York Hospital. The activity was part of an Eagle Scout project.

Veterans’ Expo, Job Fair Planned Area veterans of all ages, active military, and their families are urged to attend the Veterans’ Expo and Job Fair, a free, one-day event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Presented by OLP Events, the Veterans’ Expo will connect active, transitioning, and retired military members and their families with benefits and resources available to them through local community-service providers, health care professionals, VA benefits counselors, VFWs and American Legions, and various businesses covering home improvement, legal services, finance, retirement living, insurance, and more. Barber Styling Institute will offer attendees free haircuts. Representatives from the Recorder of Deeds office will be on hand to help all honorably discharged Lancaster County veterans record their DD-214 papers and enroll in the free Thank a Vet veterans discount program. CPBGH Announces New Partnership The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) has entered into a partnership with AblePay Health to offer its members a unique program for diffusing the costs of health care. AblePay Health, located in Bethlehem, is a health care consumer company that assists its members with discounts (up to 13%) and flexible payment terms on deductible and coinsurance expenses. AblePay has agreements with Penn Medicine-Lancaster General Health (LGH), the St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN), Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), and Main Line Health (MLH) that allows it to provide convenient payment options for its members. The CPBGH was originally founded in 1984 as the Lancaster County Business Group on Health by a group of employers concerned about the cost and quality of health care benefits. In 2017, the board of directors voted to expand the group’s reach and change its name to the Central Penn Business Group on Health. The group now focuses on serving employers based in Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. For more information, readers may visit www.cpbgh.org.
