Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and world-class historical sites. Traveling locally can
have a big impact on small businesses without having a big impact on your wallet. Take a train trip through the Pocono Mountains on the Historic Stourbridge Line, visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and the iconic actor’s hometown, see the amazing architectural feats of Frank Lloyd Wright, and hear the distinctive bugle call of a bull elk in Pennsylvania’s northwest. There are so many fascinating destinations to be discovered across town and across Pennsylvania. Our first highlighted destination will be Jim Thorpe; look for the article in your mailbox in early November.

Eileen Shipe (left) and Donna Ellenberg display a few of the themed baskets that have been donated for the Bizarre Bazaar at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown. BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“It’s our 35th year. It’s a big year for us,” Eileen Shipe commented, noting that for 34 years, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. The inventory for the inaugural event and those that followed were handcrafted by church members, who made ornaments, home décor, and more. Eventually, the bazaar began to include outside vendors, with Shipe coordinating their participation. Church members still contributed items that were featured in a type of silent auction. In June, while the church building was in its fourth month of closure to all activities, Shipe and her committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire inventory for what has been dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,” Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.” “I was really impressed,” added church council member and webmaster Alex DiMarzio. “They really turned out.”
DiMarzio has cataloged the baskets and their contents at https://salem-ucc-roh. square.site. Individuals may visit the website until Friday, Nov. 6, to view the baskets, buy tickets to enter to win the lots of their choosing,

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

The Manheim Central field hockey team picked up two big wins last week. Manheim’s offense came alive in the second quarter with two goals for a 2-0 victory against Cocalico last Wednesday. The play started off with a corner by Kylie Kroesen. Kiley Hosler took a shot and Kroesen got the rebound and put the ball into the left side of the cage. The second goal came with 2:12 left in the half and started on the far side of the field on passes from Kroesen to Hartzler to Hosler, who got the ball on her stick, turned to her right and fired her shot into the cage. “We were scrappy in the circle and took advantage of our offensive opportunities,” head coach Morgan Briggs said about the offensive success. Junior goalie Avery Wagner collected six saves in a stingy defensive effort. “They stayed composed and got the ball out of the circle quickly,” Briggs said about her defense. “We were marking the Cocalico players tightly under the 25 and didn’t allow them to have easy shots without pressure.” On Thursday, the Lady Barons beat Northern Lebanon 1-0. Jenna Lutz scored in the second quarter, taking a pass from Hosler. Wagner had 10 saves for MC. Kroesen is sixth the LancasterLebanon League in scoring with seven goals and two assists. Lutz is eighth with six goals and three assists. Wagner has the second best saves percentage in the
league. In 12 games she has faced 122 shots and made 97 saves, good for a 79.51 save percentage. She has three shutouts. CROSS COUNTRY The Baron boys’ placed 14th overall in the league meet held at Ephrata Middle School last Tuesday and Wednesday. Manheim coach Ryan Kennedy said they were happy to beat a few teams that they lost to during the regular season. Senior Brady Knier was the top finisher for MC, placing 69th overall with a time of 19:01. Juniors Zeke Ruffner was 72nd, posting a time of 19:10, Michael Greenwald was 77th (19:21) and Bailey Garman was 88th (19:40). Racing Wednesday, Kennedy said the girls ran well, finishing 12th overall. Freshman Julie Lindberg was 33rd overall (21:52) and Savannah Semple was 64th (23:34). Junior Alaina Bruckhart was 67th (23:43) sophomore Jenna Moffett was 79th (23:59) and senior Emma Levitan was 81st (24:21). Despite not qualifying any runners for districts, Kennedy is excited for the future, especially with so many underclassmen girls. The boys finished the season 5-6 and the girls 10-1. “We have a young girls’ team and are looking forward to improving on that finish in the coming years,” he said. GIRLS’ SOCCER With a 4-0 victory last Friday against McCaskey, the Lady Barons captured the L-L League Section Two title, their fifth section crown in program history. After a scoreless 40 minutes, Manheim’s offense heated up after intermission, scoring goals in bunches. Liz Voegele started the scoring. Summer Bates found the back of the net and five minutes later Abby Knapp made it 30. Abby Read completed the scoring. Bates, Reed, Tylee Stauffer and Makenna Enck all had assists. “We actually didn’t make any major adjustments,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said about halftime changes. “We were getting opportunities in the first half but they just weren’t falling. We encouraged the girls to keep their heads up, and to keep doing the things we do well. We knew goals would come.” And they did. Lately the goals have come frequently for Bates and Reed. These two have stepped up in the absence of Hannah Adair, who is out with a leg injury. Bates has scored five goals in her last five section games, Stoltzfus said, adding that Reed has scored, assisted or drew a penalty in nine of the Barons’ last 14 goals in that span. Goalie
Shauna Lukus (four shutouts) and the defensive back line for the Lady Barons (9-3-1) have played huge lately, Stoltzfus said. Last Tuesday MC rallied to beat Elizabethtown, 2-1. Reed netted the game-winner into the far post. Redirecting a touch pass, she also assisted on Bates’ goal. FOOTBALL The Barons got back in the win column with a 51-14 victory over Elizabethtown last Friday, breaking a four game losing streak. Manheim went to the air early and often in this game, as junior quarterback Judd Novak was involved in seven touchdowns. Novak threw four TD passes to Owen Sensenig, the first for 89 yards. Besides throwing for five TDs (one to Westley Borden), Novak added a 1-yard run for a score. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons beat Elizabethtown 3-1 last Tuesday. The first goal with 32:24 first half - was set up by a Gabe Redcay pass to Nate Reed, who passed ahead to Andrew Donmoyer, who beat the diving keeper to send the ball into the right corner of the net. Tied at 1-1, Reed drove down the left side and sent a long shot that hit off the cross bar. Sam
Shefnie charged in off the rebound and blasted a right-foot shot past the keeper for the eventual game winner with 5:26 remaining in the first half. VOLLEYBALL The girls beat Solanco in four sets, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13 and 2518. They lost a little focus in the second set, but finished strong to get the win. “We served tough and passed well,” head coach Jason Moyer said. “We relaxed a little in the second set and that allowed them to take the game from us. We refocused and came back strong to finish out the match. We did a great job keeping them out of system and converting on the free balls that this generated. I’m very happy with how they played.” Madison Knier was strong at the net with 12 kills and four blocks. Grace Stoltzfus dished out 23 assists and added four aces along with Raegan Nissley. Amber Kauffman notched four digs. Thursday Manheim lost to Garden Spot, 25-21, 25-20 and 2514. Nissley had seven kills. Stoltzfus handed out 15 assists and collected four aces. Mackenzie Ginder added a block and Kauffman registered five digs.
