In April of 2018, individuals from a variety of community sectors in Manheim began meeting together on a monthly basis to form the grassroots organization of Manheim Community Cares. The collaboration is intended to make Manheim a thriving and caring community where every person feels welcomed and empowered to support one another. Manheim resident and Senior Master Sgt. Nancy Hanula, who serves as the Civil Operations program manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Counterdrug Joint Task Force, has been a part of forming and growing similar groups in other parts of the state and decided that it was time to make it happen in Manheim. “USDA Rural Development did a roundtable discussion (on opioid misuse), and it really lit the spark in me. I said, ‘Manheim is ready for this,’” Hanula recalled. Hanula explained that the group uses community data to determine what current issues are and how everyone can work together to resolve them. Grace Community Fellowship Church of Manheim, 1483 N. Colebrook Road, recently welcomed Eldrick Lal as its fulltime pastor. Lal was officially installed as pastor during a worship service on Aug. 18. Former lead pastor Dennis Andrews, who served at the church for 18 years, prayed for Lal during the service and symbolically passed the reins over to him. Lal served as an associate pastor at Philadelphia Church in Seattle for 10 years prior to accepting the position as pastor at Grace Community Fellowship Church of Manheim. “It has been a wonderful journey of faith, trust, and prayer. It is a journey that my wife and I prayed and fasted about,” shared Lal. “When I came here in May (to interview), I felt in my heart that I was called here.” Born in Pakistan, Lal spent most of his childhood in Libya and went to school in Nairobi, Kenya. Pursenalities Party from pg 1 The American Heart Association, an organization focused on heart and brain health, invites women from across Lancaster County to the ninth annual Pursenalities Party. The silent purse auction to raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Designer purses from names like Coach, Kate Spade, and Michael Kors donated by local individuals and businesses will be up for auction. The event will also include hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. In addition to benefiting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, proceeds from the event will be used toward a gift of infant

CPR kits to a local hospital. Last year’s event raised $13,000 and helped fund a donation of a year’s supply of Infant CPR Anytime Kits and other resources to WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. The Pursenalities Party is chaired by Taylor Rotay, business development representative at Paul Davis Restoration. The event is free to attend, though attendees are encouraged to register and make a donation at the door. undergraduate degree from the Sons of God Bible College in Nairobi and spent 10 years serving as a missionary in Kenya. He and his wife, Rosebell, met in Kenya when she and her family fled from Pakistan due to religious persecution. Married for 18 years, the couple has two children: Ranson, 16, and Hazel, 14. Following his years in Kenya as a missionary, Lal traveled to the United States to earn a Bachelor of Theology in pastoral ministries from Atlanta Bible College in McDonough, Ga. He then went on to earn his Master of Arts in Christian leadership from Cross-National Graduate School of Leadership in Seattle. “I’m thankful that God led me here. It is an honor and a privilege for me,” shared Lal. “The people (at Grace Community

Fellowship Church) know the Word of God and are committed to following it. People here are very hospitable and have loved on us. I didn’t feel like an outsider at all in coming here.” Lal noted that he and Andrews stay in touch and pray for each other, which has helped in making the leadership transition a smooth process. “God’s vision through me is to see the church grow, and I’m not talking about quantitatively but qualitatively,” Lal explained. “I want the church to be very missional, and when I talk about the church I mean the congregation - not the building that we meet in.” Members of the church will be taking part in a Light the Night event at Teen Central Manheim, 15 S. Train Station from pg 1 Two posters next to Granger displayed photos of what the station looked like prior to its renovation: a set of stairs leading down to the tracks, with no accommodation for passengers with disabilities. “The station has always been well-used, but (before this project) it had little more than a covered bus stop,” said Granger. “What is here now is transformational to the community.” Phase One of the project began in September 2011, with streetscape improvements along Delta and Main streets and the installation of a covered walkway from the long-term parking lot to the station. A groundbreaking ceremony for Phase Two was held in October 2016, and construction began in early 2017. The station opened to the public on Oct. 7, 2019. Phase Two brought the addition of 69 parking spaces along East and West Henry Street parallel to the train tracks. The project also included the addition of a second long-term parking lot, a covered walkway, landscaping, ADA accessibility improvements, an elevator and stair towers, highlevel platforms with canopies, lighting leading down to each platform, and a pedestrian over pass between each tower. The approximately $33 million project cost was funded by PennDOT and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). In addition to Granger, the dedication included remarks from Rep. Lou Schmitt, PennDOT Executive Deputy Secretary Yassmin Gramian, FTA Region 3 administrator Terry Garcia Crews, State Transportation Commission representative Ronald Drnevich, and Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley.

The Mount Joy Train Station project began in 2011 and opened to the public on Oct. 7, 2019. The approximately $33 million project was funded by PennDOT and the Federal Transporation Administration (FTA). “The Mount Joy station not only helps move passengers along the Keystone Line, but is also a gateway to the local community,” Gramian said. “Its improvements will create more efficient transportation and improved customer service throughout the Keystone Corridor.” Bradley praised the revitalization project, stating that those visiting Mount Joy via train will now be introduced to the town with a fittingly beautiful structure. Bradley read from a piece written in 1876 for the nation’s centennial that included several references to the original Mount

Joy Train Station, which was built one and a half blocks from the current location. “This returns us to some of the prominence and beauty of what existed at that particular time,” stated Bradley. Bradley noted that the images of ships on some of station’s windows are in honor of the town being named for the Mountjoy ship, which was responsible for the breaking of a siege in Derry, Ireland, in 1689. tries to protect them,” said Samuel. “My favorite part about playing him is that I get to tease Edmund, and he is played by a good friend of mine, so that’s a lot of fun.” Kelli Robinson, who is directing the MCCS production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” said that the cast features students in grades six through 12 - a diversity of ages that she appreciates as the students have a chance to learn from and interact with one another. “This show really identifies well with the faith of this school, and because it is an allegory, it is fun to see (the students) make those connections,” stated Robinson. “C.S. Lewis wrote this so that younger kids, when confronted with darker aspects of their faith and life, wouldn’t be as scared,” added Robinson. “It’s definitely going to be a familyfriendly show.” Additional members of the cast include Benjamin Gerlach as Mr. Beaver, Katelyn Niedwick as Mrs. Beaver, Vince Clay as Tumnus, Jordan DeGroft as Fenris Ulf, Kylie Masters as Unicorn, Enya Smith as Centaur, Jackson Mohr as Dwarf, Joshua Humbert as Father Christmas,

Dayspring To Tell Pilgrims’ Story Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will select a specific time for a tour that will take approximately one hour. Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live re-enactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The guided tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will visit six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to

Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn about how the Pilgrims created their own model of selfgovernment. Dayspring first offered Thanksgiving Exposed in 2002, when the school was located in Lancaster. “Thanksgiving Exposed” is free and open to the public, but reservations are required, and the event is expected to fill. To register, readers may visit www.dayspringchristian.com or call 717-285-2000. SPORTS Barons Top Solanco, Clinch 5th Section Crown 8 - MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - October 30, 2019

Columbia • Conestoga Valley • Donegal • Elizabethtown • Garden Spot • Hempfield • Lampeter-Strasburg Manheim Central • Manheim Township • Penn Manor • Pequea Valley • Solanco • Warwick

By Eric G. Stark

After four weeks, the Manheim Central football team had a 2-2 record, and people in Manheim were talking about the team going 5-5, Barons’ coach Dave Hahn said. Fast forward six weeks and the Barons, winners of six straight games, clinched the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title after a 49-20 victory Friday, Oct. 25 against Solanco. The section win was also the Barons’ 24th in a row, a streak that spans four years. The section title was the Barons’ fifth straight. That means this senior class has defended the crown four consecutive seasons. “It says a lot about them (the seniors), especially because of the tough beginning of our season with tough opponents,” Hahn said “I am proud of Photo by Bob Diller how they responded. To put it in perHelena Bidelman battles to get a shot off for the Barons during spective, you have to look at who we’re their 4-0, District Three first-round victory over Susquehannock playing. There was no magic potion. We just stayed the course. last Wednesday at Hempfield. “Wilson and Warwick (the teams that beat Central) are good teams that find weaknesses. We competed and showed perseverance to hang with it.” Colby Wagner, who started the game with a 14-yard rushing touchdown, hooked up with quarterback Evan Simon for a 74-yard TD catch. Wagner also caught a third TD from 1-yard out. Simon connected with J.D. Grube on a 10-yard TD pass and Simon scored on a 24-yard run. Manheim led 14-7 after the first quarter and 35-14 at halftime. Jack Harbach and Troy Kolk also scored rushing TDs for the Barons, who passed for 302 yards and rushed for 65 yards.

“We’re just taking what the defense gives us,” Hahn said. “Solanco gave us the pass and we’ll take it.” The Barons’ air attack has been effective this season. Simon has great chemistry with Wagner, but he also gets the ball to Wagner’s brother, Ben as well as Grube and Cole Lastinger to keep defenses honest. An unsung hero from last Friday’s win was the special teams’ play of Josh Moore. The junior had a great week in practice and Hahn said if there were eight kickoffs, Moore had six tackles. The district playoffs begin Friday, Nov. 1 at Rettew Field, as the Barons host a Waynesboro team that has only thrown the ball 23 times in 10 games this season. “They’re a lot like Solanco,” Hahn said. “It will be their running game versus our passing game and we’ll see who breaks.” CROSS COUNTRY The top runner for the Barons Saturday, Oct. 26 at the District Three Class 3A championship at Big Spring High School was Olivia Sunderland. The talented sophomore placed 74th overall with a time of 20:40. She finished 23rd among all sophomores in the field. Though the Barons only brought four runners to the meet, they needed five to compete for the team title, the future looks good for the girls cross country team, as the top three runners were sophomores and the fourth runner is a freshman. Isabella Reber, a sophomore, placed 155th overall, posting a time of 22:20.50. Fellow

sophomore Madelyn Hoffman (23:06.30) was 191st. Freshman Jenna Moffet (23:13.30) placed 195th. For the boys, who finished 29th out of 42 teams, senior Elijah Wagner was their top runner. He ended his career on a high note, finishing 75th overall with a time of 17:14.40. Sophomores Michael Greenwald (131st), Bailey Garman (182nd, 18:10.7) and Zeke Ruffner (185th, 18:12.10) followed. Senior Isaac Martin was the final counter, placing 201st in 18:20.00. Juniors Brady Knier (18:41.90) and Zachary Witmer (20:13.50) placed 226 and 287, respectively. “Both teams had solid performances with multiple PR’s to end the season,” noted head coach Ryan Kennedy. “For the boys, Elijah, Zeke, Michael and Baily all ran PRs, as did Jenna Moffett. Other girls ran some of their best times as well. We didn’t have any state qualifiers but I’m proud of how well our runners finished the season.” BOYS’ SOCCER Central trailed 1-0 at halftime Monday, Oct. 21. Rod Brenize, the Barons’ boss, knew he had to be aggressive and opportunistic, in his first round District Three Class 3A match or the Manheim’s season was over. So the Barons came fast and assertive to start the second half against Lampeter-Strasburg. For the first five minutes of the second half, Manheim was the better team, firing three quality shots on net. The Pioneers overcame Central’s offensive attack and countered with a goal of their own, and things spiraled from there for the Barons in a 5-0 loss to L-S. Down 2-0, Brenize went even more

aggressive, putting an extra offensive player up front and playing with only three defensive backs. This plan worked in an overtime win against Elizabethtown. Unfortunately, this strategy leaves the defense exposed and Manheim’s season ended. “Who would have thought we’d be in districts, but there we were,” said Brenize, whose club ends the year with an 8-11 record. “We had a lot to celebrate. There were a lot of laughs on the bus. I’m sorry it’s over. I had a lot of fun.” Calling his team a light-hearted group that made him laugh, Brenize said the players and coaches did a lot of growing and turned their season around when they rallied from two goals down at Ephrata on October 1. “All it takes is one thing to turn things around and boom here we go,” Brenize said. The Barons ended the regular season with three wins to make districts. The seniors had an impact. He credits the leadership of Seth Haldeman and Quintin Rohrer, both were captains. Brett Kreider, who Brenize moved to a lot of positions, was very coachable. Bryce Dombach kept things loose. Logan Whitehouse and Jake Cipko were very receptive to coaching and Whitehouse even played a few games in goal. VOLLEYBALL The Barons lost in four games to James Buchanan in the District Three Class 3A first round Saturday Oct. 26 at Garden Spot High School. JB won 25-19, 25-17, 17-25 and 25-22. “The girls played well and really brought some strong offense, but JB played great defense and picked up a

how we played. Our middle hitters really turned it up. Our passing was really good, but James Buchanan was able to extend the play and pull out a victory.” Central was strong at the net with Tori Henderson working 14 kills, Maddie Knier adding 10 and Emma Moyer hitting eight. Knier added seven blocks and Moyer had six blocks and four aces. Grace Stoltzfus dished out 41 assists. Amber Kauffman played strong defense, collecting 11 digs. The future looks bright for the Barons, who graduate three seniors, but will return a strong nucleus. “I am very proud of the success we were able to see as a team this year,” Moyer said. “We will definitely miss the seniors that will be moving on, but we have a great group of girls returning and a large groups of eighth graders coming up.” FIELD HOCKEY Manheim Central started its District Three Class 2A playoffs with a 4-0 shutout of Susquehannock Wednesday, Oct. 23. The Barons scored three first-half

Kylie Kroesen also found the back of the net. “Helena Bidelman, Cami Mentzer and Gillian Martin all stepped up and played very well,” Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said. “They made smart decisions and knew their role on the field. The team, as a whole, played together as a unit and were all on the same page.” Briggs said passing execution looked much improved and they were hungry to score. She said Jenna Lutz did a great job in the midfield with some beautiful feeds to her teammates as well. Overall, it was a great team win. “Everyone played their best and it showed all over the field,” Briggs said. In the second round of districts, Central ran into a hot East Pennsboro team that handed the Barons a 6-0 loss Saturday, Oct. 26. East Pennsboro had nine corners and 17 shots. Manheim was held to one corner and one shot. Baron goalie Mikayla Regan had 11 saves. Central will have a state playoffs play-in game at 5 p.m. Wednesday,

Oct. 30 at Penn Manor against Berks Catholic. GIRLS’ SOCCER The defending district champion was feeling the heat. The Barons were losing 1-0 at halftime to Bishop McDevitt in the first round of the District Three Class 3A playoffs in Manheim Monday, Oct. 21. “We had to come to terms at that time that if we continued to play the same way that our season would be over,” Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “That realization really seemed to wake us up and the second half was much better. In those moments great players rise to the occasion and our seniors really carried us.” The seniors stepped up and delivered, as the Barons rallied, scoring two second-half goals for a 2-1 win. The winning goal game on a free kick from about midfield from Tori Fahnestock that found its way to the feet of MaKenna Copley, who broke through the back line and beat the keeper to the far post. Copley, who is committed to play soccer at Division II Mount Olive University, also scored the tying goal. The assist was from Isabella Wendler. Central’s defense tightened up also. McDevitt had no corners and three shots in the game. The Barons, meanwhile, had eight corners and 11 shots. Mia Reed had two saves. In the second round of districts, Manheim pulled out a 1-0 triumph over Cocalico, a team they met nine days earlier in the L-L League

semifinals. In that game, the Barons, a more experienced team, handled the Eagles and dictated the pace of the game. In the latest meeting, things were a lot tighter. Each team knew each other a bit better than the first time they met, which is what Stoltzfus expected. After a scoreless first half, Copley scored off a bit of a scramble in the penalty box on a corner. “She was just the first person to it and wanted it more,” Stoltzfus said. “We put a lot of pressure on Cocalico and denied any clear cut chances. From there it was just continuing to provide our offense with opportunities until one fell.” Copley’s fell into the back of the net in the 67th minute of the game. It proved to be all the Barons would need, as the defense built a wall in front of the net. “Tori Fahnestock and Autumn Greiner had another great game at center back for us, keeping us safe,” Stoltzfus said. “Mia Reed (two saves) was also a beast in the air, grabbing the two corners Cocalico had without giving up an opportunity to shoot in those dangerous moments.” This is a familiar time of year for the Barons. For the four seniors - Copley, Reed, Fahnestock and Greiner this will be their 25th playoff game, that’s more than a full season of playoff games. They played in 13 district games of their careers. “They’ve been here before,” Stoltzfus said. “It’s nothing new to them.”

Forty vendors have registered to participate in the event, and some of the goods they will offer include handspun yarns, holiday aprons for adults and children, cards and stationery, painted gourds, wreaths, vintage ornaments, primitive Christmas décor, and woodworked products. A vendor known as the Pillow Lady will be at the event again. “She always sells out every year,” Shipe said, noting that the woman gives the proceeds from her sales to the mission teams at her Quarryville-based church. Some of the vendors will be familiar to repeat bazaar attendees, but there will be new ones as well.

Ginny Deaner (left) and Eileen Shipe invite the public to shop the 34th annual Christmas at Salem holiday bazaar, which will be held at Salem UCC of Rohrerstown on Nov. 2. “We’ve really gotten a lot (of new vendors) by word of mouth,” Shipe remarked, adding that Christmas at Salem has a good reputation in vendor circles. “Our kitchen goes around and takes their orders for food, and we help to take their items in to the church and out to their cars.” The bazaar will also feature a book fair and a silent auction. Most of the books this year are newer editions, and they are priced to sell. At the end of the day, any remaining stock may be purchased for a flat fee per bag. The silent auction will include a crocheted afghan, an angel made from a wooden shutter, a shell art painting with a creche, a painted slate, and a Penn State University-themed walking stick made by interim pastor Roben Roof. There will also be opportunities to win an Amish-made queen-size quilt. The cooks and bakers of the church will stay busy ensuring

that the baked goods table and the kitchen are offering a variety of tasty treats. Hot food will include chili, hot dogs, beef barbecue, walking tacos, macaroni and cheese, and beef vegetable soup. “That’s what we’re known for,” Shipe said of the soup. Additionally, kitchen staffers will bake pumpkin pies and mincemeat pies on the morning of the event for customers’ gustatory pleasure. Other pies, candy, cookies, and breads will be donated to the bake sale by church members. Shipe said the chocolate mint brownies made by Mary Stauffer are a popular offering. “They go almost before the doors open,” Shipe commented. “I make them, but they’re never as good as hers.” Proceeds from the bazaar will be used to fund ongoing restoration projects at Salem UCC. For more information about Christmas at Salem, readers may call Shipe at 717-575-9966.

Theater Reaches Fundraising Benchmark The Fulton Theatre has reached a key benchmark in its $29 million capital expansion campaign. The Fulton may now move forward with the next phase of construction due to support from lead donors Ed and Jeannie Arnold. The Fulton has also received the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program Grant, which specifically supports the first phase. This expansion will transform the theater campus while revitalizing buildings on King Street and creating a new building on Water Street. This project as a whole will create The Ed and Jeannie Arnold Center for the Performing Arts, which will encompass the entire

city block. The arts center will include the Fulton along with the Tell Studio Theatre, Castagna Hall, Culliton Tower and the Barshinger Artists’ Village. For more information on the Fulton and this project, readers may visit www.fultonbreakout.org.

Rock Ford Slates “The Matchmaker”

Middle School Students Receive Recognition

Rock Ford Plantation, in collaboration with Theater of the Seventh Sister, will present a one-act play titled “The Matchmaker: A Tale Drawn From ‘Emma’ by Jane Austen.” Rock Ford director Sam Slaymaker’s adaptation of the classic novel will be presented in the candlelit rooms of the Rock Ford mansion on Thursdays, Nov. 7, 14 and 21, at 6:30 and 8 p.m. and on Fridays, Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22, at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Each performance will run approximately 50 minutes, with scenes taking place in each of the four parlors on the main floor and in the central hallway of the circa 1794 mansion. The performance will include live period music and dancing, with Rock Ford’s group of period dancers led by Glenda Jardel. Following the play, guests are invited to gather around the fireplace in the Rock Ford kitchen to enjoy a slice of wedding cake and a cup of punch in keeping with the matrimonial theme of the production. Because “Emma” is a novel of more than 400 pages, Slaymaker realized from the outset that it would only be possible to present a small part of it at Rock Ford. The

production focuses on the first of the three volumes that make up the novel. According to Slaymaker, “Emma” takes place circa 1800, which was also Edward Hand’s era. Previous collaborations between Rock Ford and Theater of the Seventh Sister include “Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Comes to Rock Ford,” which ran for six years, and “Tales From the Caretakers,” which was presented in October 2018. To maintain an intimate atmosphere and to allow the play to be performed within the house, tickets will be limited to 20 per performance. Reservations are required. Tickets may be purchased at http://rockford.yapsody.com. “The Matchmaker” is not handicapped-accessible. Guests will stand during the performance and follow the characters from room to room on the first floor of the mansion before exiting through the lower level of the mansion. Rock Ford Plantation is the historic home of Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. It is owned and operated by the Rock Ford Foundation, a private, not-for-profit corporation.

upcoming election. During a recent support group meeting for individuals experiencing vision loss, Randall Wenger of the Lancaster County Board of Elections and Registration demonstrated new key features that are designed to improve the voting experience for individuals living with low vision or blindness. Lancaster is known as the first Pennsylvania county to use the most recent voting system, though it has been available in other areas of the country. The new system includes features like changing colors (color, black and white, or inverted black and white), varying text sizes, Braille keys, and headphones. The system gives the user audio cues throughout the entire ballot navigation process and includes three wheels on the controller (move, select, or get help), each with Braille beneath it to help indicate what it does. Users will also be able to review an audible summary of the ballot at the end of the process. Poll workers will be trained

The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies recently held its 13th annual summer Latin camp at its facilities in Lancaster. The camp, a week of outdoor reading, exploration, and discussion, culminating in an indoor shadow-screen dramatic performance put on by the students themselves, goes by the name Latin on the Lawn and Greek on the Green. This year’s theme was “Theseus: The Labyrinthian Layers of His Adventures and Misadventures.” In preparation for their performance at Saint James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, students spent a week examining sources found in history, legend, fable, and folktale concerning the ancient Athenian hero Theseus and Jack of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The participants, all students in the Latin and Greek courses of The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies during the regular school year, explored tales reaching from the pre-historical Indo-European oral traditions to the 21st-century oral traditions of Appalachia.
