New Life Welcomes Lead Pastor Teen Central Banquet Set For Nov. 13 By Ann Mead Ash

By Chelsea Peifer

Ron Bradley, who officially became the lead pastor at New Life Assembly of God, has been visiting Lancaster for more than 30 years, but he never realized that he and his family, which includes his wife, Jemma, and son, Ian, would live in the county. “Lancaster is so peaceful. We would come here just to get away,” shared Bradley, adding that his family especially enjoyed visiting a local Christian theater on their visits. Bradley has been to Lancaster so many times that when a fellow pastor from the area contacted him in early May about an opening at New Life, he recalled the church with the large blue dove on the side he had seen when traveling on Route 30. “He told me

Ron Bradley officially became the lead pastor at New Life Assembly of God as of Sept. 1. (New Life) needed a lead pastor, and he thought I was the guy,” recalled Bradley. “He wanted (permission) to give them my name.” Bradley sent his resume and cover letter to the search committee, and he heard back from the See Pastor pg 3

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the community is invited to attend the Teen Central fall banquet at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Admission is free; however, reservations are requested. To reserve a space, interested individuals may call Veronica Myer at 717-664-2990 by Monday, Nov. 5. Doors will open for the banquet at 6 p.m., and folks will have the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction. Themed baskets, handmade items, overnight getaways, tickets to a local theater, and other experiences will be up for bids. Winners of the silent auction will be announced at the end of the night. A buffet-style meal prepared by a local catering company will be served at 6:30 p.m. On the menu will be hamloaf, grilled chicken, gourmet potatoes, green beans, ice cream, and assorted desserts. Following the meal, Teen Central executive director Justin Burns will

Pastor from pg 1

STACEY W. BETTS God congregation, in Scotch Plains, N.J. Bradley stated that he has been with the Assembly of God denomination since the first year after he was saved. “I met the Lord when I was 17 (during) my senior year (at Marlboro High School, Marlboro, N.J.),” said Bradley, adding that he became a Christian at a coffeehouse in Madison Township, N.J., in the fall of 1972 - a setting that he said was common during the Jesus Movement. After graduating high school, Bradley headed to Zion Bible Institute (now Northpoint College) in Providence, R.I. “My ambition was to be a trial attorney, but I went to Bible school because I loved to share about Jesus,” explained Bradley. “My (thinking) was that if I was going

not completely on target. “After three weeks at Zion Bible Institute, the Lord told me why I was really there, and it changed the course of my life,” said Bradley, who moved on to Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo., to finish his bachelor’s degree in biblical studies in 1978. He then attended Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, which is also in Springfield, completing his master’s degree there in 1979. In December of 1979, Bradley returned to New Jersey, where he joined the staff of the Princeton Nassau Christian Center. In 1984, he and Jemma planted the New Life Assembly of God in Trenton, N.J., and he pastored there for more than 12 years before becoming an assistant professor and the campus pastor at Central Bible

2013, he joined the staff at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains. According to Bradley, his initial impression of New Life in Lancaster is that people are welcoming, friendly, and warm. He is looking forward to pastoring at a church that he sees is hungry to learn God’s Word and to have the Word set the direction for the congregation. “When I think of New Life’s presence in Lancaster, I think of a beacon of light,” he said. “That’s what I see … that New Life will continually be a place where people come and expect to have an encounter with Jesus Christ.” Readers who would like to learn more about the three New Life campuses in Lancaster may visit http://www.newlife lancaster.org.

“It was an amazing meeting, and we sensed God was in this,” remembered Bradley, who returned in late July for a candidate’s weekend. During the weekend, Bradley and his family had dinner with board members and their spouses. He also met informally with staff members and held a question-and-answer session with the congregation. On Sunday, members from the Manheim and Lancaster city New Life campuses journeyed to the main campus at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, to hear Bradley preach. In the afternoon, a business meeting was held and the congregation voted to receive Bradley as pastor. He officially began serving the church on Sept. 1. When Bradley first learned of

Ken’s Cancer Fighters Relay For Life team will host a craft show on Nov. 3 at Living Hope Community Church to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. in $2,000, contributing to the best-ever fundraising total for the team. “This year, we’ll do better,” Yale asserted. “We’re selling a lot of chocolate. I work in a department with hungry men. That’s where my candy bars go.” In addition to selling candy bars, Yale makes yard art that she sells at two events in the spring. She donates all of her proceeds to the team. The team members indicated a desire to

add more activities to their fundraising calendar. “We would like more events to do fundraising instead of the same things,” said team member Barb Deery, suggesting that a painting night is in the works. Folks who would like to be kept up-to-date on fundraising activities for Ken’s Cancer Fighters, as well as those who would like to inquire about vending opportunities at the craft show, may call Allison at 717-394-8583.

When the members of Ken’s Cancer Fighters, a Relay For Life team, were asked why they raise money for the American Cancer Society, co-captain Deb Jones indicated the back of their team T-shirts. There, 20 names were listed under the headings of “in memory of” and “in honor of,” up from 16 the previous year. “We’ve lost a lot this year,” Jones remarked. “It shows you the scope (of the reach of cancer),” said team member Nancy Yale. “Everybody’s touched by cancer,” added Carol Allison, the other co-captain. The members of Ken’s Cancer Fighters host fundraising events throughout the year. They participate in the East Petersburg community yard sale and host an ongoing candy sale. The team will have candy bars in flavors like sea salt caramel, almond toffee, and chocolate mint available for purchase at its annual craft show on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Living Hope Community Church, 2823 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Also at the event, more than 25 vendors will sell a variety of products, including small tools, jewelry, antiques, yard art, fragranced wax melts, stamped goods, holiday décor, crocheted items, scarves, and more. Some of the highlights include the following: a Landis Myers table sold three times to bring in $4,000; two quilts, “Have a Little Faith” and “Diamond Lite,” were resold for a total of $7,200; a theme basket, “A House Divided,” sold for $560; a copper kettle sold for $400 and a Trek bike for $370 in the pole barn auction; two gold coins sold for $2,600 each in the coin auction; contributions and matching funds totaled $110,000; baked goods sales

totaled $10,000; contributions and donations, including an earlier bequest, exceeded $110,000; matching funds totaled $25,000; quilt sales totaled $33,000; and food sales generated nearly $34,000. The auction, the largest of its type in the world, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Lady Baron Booters One Win From States by Eric G. Stark

The Manheim Central girls’ soccer team advanced to the District Three Class 3A semifinals after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Northern York in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 25. Central’s defense clamped down and made things difficult for the Polar Bears.

“We held them to one shot from the run of play and the goal off a penalty kick,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. “Autumn Greiner deserves credit for her defensive work denying the pass to their top striker.” Junior Liz Levy found the back of the net just seven minutes into the game and Hannah Adair added a goal seven minutes into the second half,

breaking a 1-1 halftime tie. Maddie Carper had the assist on both goals. Central had eight corners and 18 shots. They limited Northern Lebanon to one corner and two shots. “Our midfield really controlled the play and we kept the pressure on,” Stoltzfus said. “Their keeper had a really good game, but we scored from a rebound early in the game and freshman Hannah Adair hit a great volley off a corner from about 12 yards out that was worthy of being the game winner.” Central must win Tuesday, Oct. 30 against Lower Dauphin at Northeastern for the automatic bid to the state playoffs. If they lose Tuesday, they will play Saturday, Nov. 3 for third place in districts and the third and final spot in states. Only the top three teams qualify for the state playoffs. The second-seeded Barons got to this point after pitching a 3-0 shutout against Cocalico on Monday, Oct. 22 at Manheim in the first round of districts. Cocalico was the 15th seed. Erin Greiner, a sophomore, had two second-half goals and assisted on sophomore Makenna Copley’s first-half score. The Baron offense finished with 12 shots on goal and Central All-Star goalie Kelli Kreider had two saves. “Our defense worked together really well to deny any dangerous opportunities,” Stoltzfus said. “Erin Greiner continued her hot streak with two goals and an assist. We could still be a little more clinical in front of the goal and that will be our goal moving forward.” FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team advanced to the District Class 3A semifinals after upsetting No. 3 seed East Pennsboro Saturday, Oct. 27 at Lower Dauphin Middle School. The 1-0 triumph was a rematch and a bit of redemption for the Barons (15-6), who lost in overtime to East Pennsboro in the district quarterfinals last season. Central also played them in September and lost 5-1. Central coach Morgan Briggs said her team made adjustments since those previous meetings and it made a difference.

Lexi Hosler leads the Barons’ attack during their 3-0 win over Red Land in last Wednesday’s District Three Class AA first-round match at Donegal.

Lily Sipel found the back of the net for the No. 6 seed Barons and Maisie Dorwart earned the assist. East Pennsboro had eight corners and two shots. Manheim had only one corner and one shot, but made that shot count. Mikayla Regan had two saves for the Barons. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Central notched a 3-0 shutout against Red Land in the first round of districts. Briggs said going into the game she knew Red Land would be an aggressive, athletic and physical team. “At times our play looked a bit sloppy, but the girls weathered their attack and were able to put away three beautiful goals,” she said. Lexi Hosler, Cody Bollinger and Sipel registered goals for the Barons. Sipel, a junior, broke open a scoreless game midway through the first half on a shot from the top of the circle. Hosler notched her goal on a penalty stroke early in the second half. Briggs said Sipel did an excellent job with her offensive positioning and was rewarded with a great shot in the

hips and shoulders up to the cage, and get a very quick, hard shot off,” stated Briggs. “She is very tough for opposing teams to defend.” BOYS’ SOCCER Manheim outshot Hershey 10-4, but could not find the back of the net, losing a frustrating 1-0 decision to the

Trojans in the District Three Class 3A quarterfinals Thursday, Oct. 25. For a team that was playing great soccer, this is a difficult way for Manheim (13-6-2) to end the season. “In districts, every team is good,” head coach Rod Brenize said. “Teams that advance have a great defense and are able to finish. Teams that don’t finish don’t advance. “Our kids were great,” he added. “I am proud of them. They were a fantastic group to coach and awesome families. I didn’t want the season to end because it is so much fun being around our guys.” The Barons opened the week with a 4-0 shutout against Shippensburg Monday, Oct. 22 in the first round of districts in Manheim. Sophomore Tyler Snavely got the scoring started in the 27th minute of play. Fellow midfielders Sam Tobias (34:00), Mavrick King (66:00) and Nick Elser (80:00) all got into the scoring spree as the fifth-seeded Barons dominated Shippensburg. Brenize credited the defense and the midfield for helping Central advance. He noted the strong play of Tobias, Niko Gavala and Mason Nissley on defense, and singled out Carson Brenize, Zach Steffy, Quintin Rohrer and Snavely in the midfield. The key was scoring first and scoring two before halftime, Rod Brenize said. CROSS COUNTRY In the rain, senior Carson Hepner ran a 17:23 at the District Three Class 3A meet Saturday, Oct. 27 at Big Spring High School, good for 23rd overall and a qualification in the boys’ state meet on Nov. 3. “He ran an excellent race,” head coach Ryan Kennedy said. “He got in good position in the first mile, so he didn’t have to waste energy fighting through the pack, then stayed strong in the last mile.” On the girls’ side, freshman Olivia Sunderland ran a 20:23 to place 33rd overall. She did not qualify for states, but she executed her race perfectly, Kennedy said. “We figured she would be on the bubble,” he said. “She gave it her best effort.” “I was very happy with how both the girls and boys ran (Saturday)” Kennedy said. “No personal bests, but not surprising, considering the extremely wet and muddy conditions.” Sunderland’s sister, Mallory, a senior, finished 114 overall with a time of 22:19.90. Fellow senior Marianne Fitzkee ran a 22:35.00 to place 123rd overall. Isabella Reber, a freshman, was 162nd overall with a 23:17.80 time and junior Erin Hoffman ran a 24:24.60 and placed 195. through eight from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and to high school students from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A meal is provided to the youths, free of charge, on each of those evenings. The first hour is an open time for activities such as basketball, billiards, air hockey, cornhole, pingpong, and board games, followed by a brief Bible study and a meal. Myer noted that when the weather is nice, time is spent outside. On occasion, Teen Central plans special events and outings - most recently a fishing excursion and a trip to see “Jesus” at a local theater. Myer said the center, which is led by four part-time staff

members and approximately 30 volunteers, would like to either ex pand its hours or add an extra evening. Individuals who are interested in volunteering may call the center at 717-6642990 to inquire about applying. Opportunities are also available for groups or individuals to sign up to assist with providing the evening meals. Teen Central will also be participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16, when all donations made to the participating organizations will be increased by a stretch pool from the event’s presenting sponsors. The Library System of Lancaster County has announced that this year Brad Rutter, alltime “Jeopardy!” champion, has donated funds that have been used to support Syndetics Unbound, which is an online catalog enhancement tool that is now available. The Lancaster County native has contributed funds for the past eight years through his Lancaster County Community Foundation donordesignated fund to benefit the public libraries in Lancaster County. The only stipulation by Rutter is that the funds he donates be used to support technology-based services that will benefit many library users throughout the county. Syndetics Unbound catalog enhancement features include enabling library users to see the cover pictures for items such as books, DVDs and CDs. This way, customers will know exactly what they are requesting. The Readers’ Advisory add-on service will give

information such as recommendations, what books are in a series, other formats available, related titles and more details about items the library user might like to borrow. Reading levels are now listed by age, grade and Lexile level. Customers may click on the award and see additional award-winning titles and their availability. Lexile Measure is a method used by schools to measure a student reader’s ability. In 2013, Rutter’s funds were used to develop the Lancaster County Libraries Mobile App, which is another popular resource for library users to access the online catalog and other electronic resources from their mobile devices. During the past several years, Rutter funded the public libraries’ e-book collection that is accessible online to all Lancaster County residents who have a library card.

IMMERMAN’S ONSTRUCTION

On Monday, Nov. 12, area veterans are invited to attend the annual Veterans Day program at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. A reception for veterans will begin at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria, followed by a program for veterans and the entire DHS student body, faculty, and staff in the auditorium at 10 a.m. Veterans who plan to attend are asked to sign up by Friday, Nov. 9, by contacting Tina Maag at 717-492-1202 or tina.maag@donegalsd.org. The program will include elements such as a presentation by several local veterans. As is tradition, members of the DHS chorus will perform “In Flanders Fields” and “America the Beautiful.” DHS principal John Felix said that the school has held a Veterans Day program since he began working in the Donegal School District in 1979. By the 1990s, the program had been reduced to a brief talk on the school announcements. After the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, occurred, teacher Pat Enos spoke with Felix about the need to restore the Veterans Day program to its original all-school assembly format. “We brought it back in 2001 to review the purpose behind Veterans Day with the kids,” recalled Felix. “It’s a lesson for the entire school about what Veterans Day is and why we honor America’s veterans.” The program will conclude at 11 a.m. Felix noted that time is chosen because of the significance of the number 11: Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 in honor of the anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the allies of World War I and Germany in 1918, which took effect at 11 a.m. When Veterans Day falls on a Sunday as it does this year, Felix said it is recommended that Veterans Day services take place on the following Monday.

Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning, Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners). Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the corner and see that team and take off, said Wilson. “It lifts the spirit. Johnson noted that in addition, members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site, she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all girls will have a

coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach, said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that. Both West and Johnson hope to see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We want to be a reflection of the communities that we’re engaging, said Johnson. “We invite the community (to let us know) if they have a spot where girls are gathering and want to start a team, added West. Readers who wish to take part in the run may register via www.gotrlancaster.org/5K. Registration will be discounted through Friday, Nov. 9. Discounts are also offered for running buddies and for children age 8 and under. Each GOTR participant who runs the 5K does so with a running buddy, who must be age 16 or older. Often, the buddy is a family member, but Wilson noted that volunteer running buddies are often needed. Individuals who would like to volunteer to be running buddies may visit www.gotrlancaster.org/5k#show -volunteer.

Girls from every school district in the county are preparing to take part in the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be held at Millersville University on Nov. 10. The untimed 5K is open to area runners who would like to participate.

One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school, explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club, said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team. With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season on Sept. 4 with 61 teams and 800 girls meeting in every school district in the county. Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K, said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe.
