When she was a student at Manheim Central High School, Rose Kidd took her first mission trip. She visited an orphanage in Mexico, and her love for travel and helping others was born.

Kidd, now 67 and a Mount Joy resident, took a mission trip to

Uganda and Kenya in July and August of this past summer, helping at Gem Village near Kampala and at Jesus Hobbs House of Hope School and Children’s Home near Nairobi. The experience left her with a renewed appreciation for creature comforts, a revitalized love for service and a strong desire to do it all again.

“Everyone should travel to a Third-World country,” Kidd said. “It really puts things in perspective.”

Kidd learned about Gem Village through a friend. “I thought, ‘This is such an amazing place,’” she recalled of the organization that provides a home for disabled and special needs children. “Their vision is inspiring.”

She traveled to the 88-acre village and spent time with the children, who range in age from preschoolers through high-schoolers. “I mostly fed the children and played with the kids,” she said. The

organization provides housing, school and opportunities for worship. Plans are in the works to expand the assisted living programming to children who age out of care at age 18 and to bring a doctor to work at the on-site clinic, which will also be open to members of the surrounding community.

Kidd also traveled to Jesus Hobbs House of Hope after learning about the organization through a former pastor at her church, Grace Community Fellowship in Manheim. The organization offers a home to 17 children who have been orphaned or who have been sent to the home by social services. As she did at her first stop, Kidd spent time playing with the children and learning about the organization’s mission.

Although the circumstances surrounding the lives of the residents of both locations may be grim, Kidd emphasized that joy was abundant. “You could tell the children in both places were loved,” she said. “You could tell that they had experienced the love of God.”

The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will hold their fall book sale at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., from Wednesday, Nov. 9, through Saturday, Nov. 12. A Friends-only preview will be held on Nov. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. The book sale will be open to the public on Nov. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 10 and 11,

from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We have a high-quality selection of thousands of hardcover and paperback books, children’s books, young adult and chapter books, lots of cookbooks and specialty topics such as history, travel, health and wellness, sports, biographies, politics and romance,” said Stacey Gibble Barrick, president of the Friends. “We also offer DVDs, CDs and puzzles.”

Some of her fondest memories of the trip were teaching the children to play Dutch Blitz, which she brought with her, and helping them fly a kite. When the fabric kite ripped after it got stuck in a tree, Kidd found a sewing kit and repaired it. Soon, she was approached by child after child requesting repairs for various items of clothing.

Kidd wants to return to both organizations, and she was so moved by her experience in Uganda, she’d like to apply for a three-month internship with Gem Village. She’s ready to go, she said, if

she can find someone to care for her cat while she’s away.

Although her background includes years of working with children through the IU 13 and child care facilities, Kidd is quick to point out that anyone can serve those who need it most.

“If you feel called to help, I say go for it,” she stated. “You never know what you’re capable of until you take that first step and do it.”

Kidd is willing to answer questions about the organizations or give presentations to groups. For more information, contact her at mountjoyrose@gmail.com.

Book Sale

The Friends hold two book sales annually, one in the spring and one in the fall. Proceeds are used to support the library and its programming.

“The Friends support the annual budget of the library for programs by contributing $24,000 per year to their budget,” Barrick noted, adding that the Friends group has provided a cumulative contribution of more than $170,000 since the group began in 2013. Barrick emphasized that the location at the church offers parking within feet of the first-level community room where the sale will be held, providing easy access for people with strollers or

who use mobility aids.

“Manheim residents are voracious readers, and we have an incredible variety of topics and genres for every book lover,” she remarked.

“Please support the Friends of the Manheim Community Library as we accumulate more Friends on the way to a new library.”

Anyone wishing to attend the Friends-only preview who does not currently have a Friends of the Library membership may register as a Friend at the door for a fee.

The girls’ volleyball team finished their 2022 regular season with a strong 12-6 record. Unfortunately, that was not enough to earn a spot in the L-L playoffs as the Lady Barons were forced to settle for third place in the competitive Section Two race. That overall record did earn Manheim a spot in the District 33A tournament that kicked off with a trip to Berks Catholic on October 25th.

Central made the most of that trip, securing a spot in the quarterfinals with a win over the Lady Saints. “Berks Catholic has a history of having strong teams, so we were excited to get this win under

our belt,” said head coach Jason Moyer of the 3-2 victory, adding, “We ran into some difficulty with the low ceilings and obstacles, but once we got our passing tuned in, our middles could not be stopped.”

Despite those early difficulties Central opened with 2522 and 25-17 wins, setting the Lady Barons up to kick off district play with a sweep. Berks Catholic had other ideas and answered with 26-24 and 25-22 wins, forcing a winner take all fifth game. Manheim regained their early match composure to secure the victory with a 15-13 game five final.

Moyer highlighted the serving of freshman Aslin Latkovich who had a team

Outlasts Berks Catholic

high five aces as well as senior Camryn Heth in keeping the Lady Saints off balance and a key to the win before adding one final thought, “There were some really long rallies in this match that made for some really good volleyball on both sides.”

Knier finished with 27 kills and four blocks while Addy Doerschuk had a staggering 51 assists. Natalie Siegrist matched Knier’s four blocks, adding 12 kills while Kaylee Dougherty tacked on eight digs.

FOOTBALL

As football seasons go, the 2022 edition for Manheim Central is not that much different than the rest. After all, the Barons are undefeated at 9-0 and locked into the District 3-4A playoffs. The only thing left to be decided...if Central can enter that district tussle with a perfect 10-0 mark and the top spot they currently hold in the 4A power rankings.

They took a step towards that on October 21st, throttling Governor Mifflin 6921, racking up 621 total yards to 309 for Governor Mifflin. Brycen Armold was the catalyst for all that offense, finishing with 339 yards and five touchdowns, on the ground, adding one

catch for five yards through the air. Zac Hahn piloted that air attack, completing 12-of15 passes for 218 yards and four scores. Bode Sipel topped the receivers with five catches for 95 yards and one score. Aaron Enterline added two scores and 91 yards on three catches while Rocco Daugherty rounded things out with a touchdown and 27 yards on his three catches.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer team saw their foray into the District 33A postseason cut short. The reason, a 6-1 loss to Greencastle-Antrim on October 25th.

FIELD HOCKEY

Central’s field hockey team bounced back from their L-L semifinal exit in a big way, topping Elizabethtown in the opening round of the District 3-2A playoffs in what head coach Morgan Briggs called “a huge battle!!”

“We are so happy we were able to come away with the win in the shootout!”

The two sides needed overtime and a shootout to determine a winner after finishing regulation knotted at 0-0 with Briggs giving credit to the Etown defense and keeper.

“I am very much impressed with Etown’s goalie, Sydney Pope, and their defensive unit. Sydney made it very difficult for us to score and get rebounds off of our initial shots,” said Briggs.

Ella Brubaker and Mikayla Appel each scored in the

opening round of the shootout, but Elizabethtown matched, keeping the game knotted, this time at 2-2. The teams worked through two scoreless rounds before Anna Bosch deposited the game winner in the fourth round of the shootout. Laci Nelson, “who played the game of her life!!!” noted Briggs, finished with four saves before stonewalling the Lady Bears

in the shootout.

TENNIS

The girl’s tennis season came to an official close on October 21st when Samantha Williams and Bri Mylin took part in the District 3-3A playoffs. The pair found themselves pitted against New Oxford’s Kae Balko and Allison Horick and ended up on the wrong side of a 6-4, 6-14 final, bringing their season to a close.

Now the fund could use community help. The fund currently has a negative balance, said John Laughlin, pastor of Salem United Methodist Church, a member of the Ministerial Association, adding that the group has given away more than $12,000 so far in 2022.

The fund counts on contributions from area churches as well as individuals, businesses and organizations. In the first half of 2022, the Manheim Ministerial Association fielded 130 calls, aiding 72 individuals and families. Both of those numbers represent an increase for the same time period of 2021. Money for groceries is the top need, followed by funding for rent or security deposits.

The Manheim Ministerial Association has been around since the 1950s, Laughlin said, and it is made up of

churches in the Manheim Central School District region. Faith-based nonprofits are also part of the group.

Originally, the assistance fund gave $150 per recipient annually, but that number was increased recently to meet rising needs. “If we could, we’d love to increase how much we give even more,” Laughlin said. “There is a real need for this.”

He encouraged people who need help to call and request it, and he emphasized that people who donate to the fund are making a difference in the community. “If individuals or businesses want to make contributions, we would welcome them,” he said. “It’s great for people who are looking for some place they can trust when they make a donation. You can trust that we will use 100% of the funds given to support

people in the community.”

Bill Melone, who recently retired as community care pastor of Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, had been overseeing calls and requests for help. With his retirement, the day-to-day management of assistance will be handled by Love INC of Lancaster County, a nonprofit network of churches throughout the county. With the addition of Love INC, the ministerium hopes to expand programming to include preventative programs such as budget counseling.

“The nice thing about this fund is that it’s open to any Manheim Central School District resident. That’s the only requirement,” Melone said. “We don’t vet for income level. If somebody calls and needs assistance, it’s available to them.”

He noted that if a caller has a need that is not covered by the fund, he or she will be directed to additional resources such as the Manheim Central Food Bank, which falls under the Manheim Ministerial Association umbrella, or 211, a number for the United Way.

To donate to the assistance fund, call Salem United Methodist Church at 717-665-2331 or email the Manheim Ministerial Association at info@manheimchurches.org. To request financial assistance, call Love INC at 717-735-7540.

Veterans Day Program Set

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC), 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, will host its 40th annual Veterans Day program on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m., rain or shine. The program will be held in the parking lot above the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial while the memorial undergoes renovations.

John Spruyt, director of IGNC, will welcome the audience. Nicholas Taylor, commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address. Joseph Sny-

der, Memorial Council trustee, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania.

Parking will be at the Arrowhead Community Club, 9-65 Fisher Ave., on Fort Indiantown Gap with shuttle bus transportation to and from the designated parking area to the cemetery. Anyone entering the area from the west is advised that there is

construction on Fisher Avenue at Bittle Road. Attendees should follow the detour sign pointing north at Snitz Creek Restaurant, which will bring them to the Community Club. There will be limited handicapped-accessible parking at the cemetery itself.

The Avenue of Flags display at the cemetery will be in place through the week of Veterans Day. The Avenue of Flags is made up of casket flags that have been donated by veterans’ families. State, territory, and service flags will also be flown.

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the

U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before due to the prior donation criteria. In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively

eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.red crossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767. As a thank you, donors who give through Monday, Oct. 31, will be emailed an electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice.

Tamburitzans To Perform In Lititz

The Tamburitzans music and dance troupe will perform at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz, on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. The group has performed across the United States as well as internationally and will present traditional music and routines from various European cultures. Among its performers is Cody McSherry, a Conestoga native who will return to Lancaster County as a member of the group for the first time.

This year marks the 86th consecutive season that the Tamburitzans has performed, and the group bills itself as it the longest-running live stage

production in the United States. The group was founded in 1937 by A. Lester Pierce after he met three young tamburitza musicians. They performed as the St. Thomas Tamburitza Trio until traveling to Pittsburgh, which Pierce felt would make a good headquarters due to its cultural diversity. Pierce made a work scholarship arrangement with Duquesne University for the performers, and they became known as the Duquesne University Tamburitzans in the 1940s.

The tamburitza, after which the company is named, is a family of stringed instruments originating from Croatia and is commonly used in folk music from Serbia, Bosnia and several

surrounding countries. In its earlier days, the Tamburitzans focused only on music from Eastern Europe, but has since expanded its catalog to feature multiple other cultures. “As the world has changed, so have we,”

said Alyssa Hrishenko, executive director of the Tamburitzans. “We’ve done Bollywood and Latin American performances and try to respectfully represent as many countries as we can across the states.”

The performance that will be featured in Lititz is titled “Phoenix: A New Dawn.” It will include music from Italian culture and conclude with a traditional Ukrainian piece. “We like to think of this production as a rebirth of culture and our ensemble after (the COVID-19 pandemic),” said Hrishenko. “We’re also happy to do our

part to keep Ukrainian culture on stage during this time of turmoil.”

McSherry is the lead accordionist and leader of onstage musicians for the Tamburitzans and is a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. He began performing at 8 years old, playing his accordion at local nursing homes and eventually becoming involved with productions though Servant Stage and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. This is McSherry’s second year with the Tamburitzans, and he is looking forward to bringing its music to his hometown. “

Performing with them is absolutely wonderful. I’m not Eastern European, so this entire world of music is new to me,” said McSherry. “I love getting to explore it and meeting so many new people.” McSherry is studying classical languages and French, and he now hopes to major in Slavic studies as well.

The Tamburitzans will hold auditions on Saturday, Dec. 3.

For more information on auditioning, visit www.the tamburitzans.org/auditions.

Conestoga native Cody McSherry (center) performs as a member of the Tamburitzans. The
Tamburitzans perform traditional pieces from cultures around the globe.

Visit the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club, and you’ll step inside another world. “It’s taking the world and putting it into miniature,” said John Monti, club vice president, describing the 1,600 feet of track in seven display areas. “You could look at the same scene six times and see something new every time.” The club will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at the club building on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.

For 25 years, the club members have been sharing their passion for trains with the community. The display features seven gauges, ranging from standard scale to Z scale. The latter layout is so tiny, it’s housed in an open briefcase.

“It’s very unusual to have seven scales under one roof,” said club treasurer Bill Fishel.

Although the club is housed on the grounds of Masonic Village, its 50 members are about equally split between residents of the retirement community and the wider region, Monti said.

The elaborate layouts fill the building, with scenes of northwest, southeast and central Pennsylvania, as well as local attractions such as the Star Barn. A working replica of a Pittsburgh incline operates in one area, while another area features holiday scenes that change throughout the year.

The club members note that the layout is always evolving, with plans for redoing a warehouse district and swapping out a cityscape with an HOscale amusement park.

“It’s never done,” said club president Gary Latshaw. “This is 25 years of work, and it’s always changing.”

Most of the club members have been into trains since their youth, said Latshaw. The club provides members with a space to indulge in their hobby without having to set up an elaborate layout in their home, but it also serves another purpose.

“I have learned so much from these guys,” said club member David Newhart. “The club has kept me busy, and it’s created a group of friends.”

At a typical open house, eight or nine trains may be running at one time. “When you see this layout running, you can’t believe it,” said Monti, who noted that visitors should look out, down and up, because trains run overhead the display as well. “We’ve even gotten down and looked at the layouts from a child’s point of view, so we know there are things they can see from their vantage point,” he shared.

Club members will be on hand at the open house to answer questions, fix derailments and promote the club, which is always looking for new members. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, and club applications will be available at the open house.

Admission to the open house is free, but donations will be accepted to keep the display running. Additional open houses will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17; on Sunday, Dec. 4; and on the first Saturday and

Public

Sunday of the month from January through April. Times vary, and a complete schedule may be found at www.mvetrainclub.com or by following the club on Facebook at “MV&E Model Railroad Club.”
