Attendees may purchase breakfast and lunch from the Salem United Methodist Women. Call the church office at 717-665-2331.
Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12,
through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” See Operation Christmas Child pg 4

The crafters of Woodcrest Villa will host a craft event on Nov. 10 in the VIVA Centre on the retirement community’s campus. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The crafters of Woodcrest Villa spend a lot of time in stitches, of both the sewing and laughing varieties. “We don’t only work, but we enjoy
what we’re doing. We laugh and talk,” said Hilma Mumma. “And support each other,” added Kathy Denlinger. “Not only in the work we do, but also in the benevolent fund for Mennonite Communities.” See Crafters pg 6
Local ladies are invited to the Women’s Club of Manheim charity auction and Ladies Night Out on Nov. 13 at The Booking House in Manheim. Proceeds from the silent and live auctions that evening will help to fund grants that the club distributes annually to the community.

performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. Operation Christmas Child from pg 1 “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any
of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following: LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritanspurse .org/operation-christmas -child/drop-off-locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item, such as a stuffed animal, soccer ball with a pump, or clothing outfit, and then be filled in with other toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.

Crafters from pg 1 The members of the crafters group meet year-round on Friday mornings in the craft room on the top floor of the VIVA Centre on Woodcrest Villa’s campus. Using a variety of donated materials and having voted on what to make, the volunteers form hundreds of whimsical and practical items that they sell in the craft room and at the craft event they have hosted for the past few years to support the benevolent fund. “(Even though we laugh a lot), we’re serious about our cause,” said crafter Anne Fessenden. “A fair amount of the residents have used up all their funds, and they’re supported by the benevolent fund.” The community is invited to support the fund by purchasing the group’s crafts and other items at the third annual craft event that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the VIVA Centre’s Gamber Auditorium, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The crafters will sell walker bags, fall and holiday décor, ornaments, wreaths, small cloth Christmas trees, decorative serving plates, gift card envelopes, gift bags, and more. Staff members, residents, and their relatives will also take part in the craft event. They are expected to offer jewelry, doll clothes, knitwear, pillows, papercrafts, and wooden items, among others. Additionally, hot dogs, doughnuts, baked goods, and beverages will be sold. Cash will be the only accepted form of payment at the craft event. The crafters noted that their inspiration is nonagenarian and resident Grace Keener. They invite Woodcrest Villa residents to participate in the craft gatherings on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. Artistic talent is not a requirement for volunteers. “A lot these ladies have great artistic skills. They’re accepting, though, of those of us who don’t feel as artistic,” crafter Kris Douglas-Kinsey said gratefully. The craft room is also open throughout the week, and crafters offer services such as gift wrapping, jewelry repair, and the restyling of wreaths and silk flower arrangements. “Members of our community stop by to see what’s going on,” said volunteer craft coordinator Shirl Fitzsimmons. “A lot of people buy gifts for family and friends (when they’re here).” For more information about the crafters or the craft event, readers may call Fitzsimmons at 717-984-2720.

Lady Barons Upset Mechanicsburg, Win 3A Title By Eric G. Stark
For the second time in three years, the Manheim Central girls’ soccer team hoisted the District Three Class 3A championship trophy. This year the Barons (20-3) knocked off previously unbeaten and nationally accomplished Mechanicsburg, 1-0, on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Hersheypark Stadium. With the only goal of the game, Manheim’s fantastic freshman, Hannah Adair, found the back of the net early in the second half from 25 yards out, after taking a pass from senior midfielder Maddie Carper, who was the team’s MVP last season and a First-Team Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two All-Star selection in 2017. The Barons, who have yet to lose to a Class 3A team this year, advance to the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday. At the beginning of the season
Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said the girls soccer program was enjoying a bit of a youth movement with 15 of the 29 players on last year’s team being freshman. They only graduated three players from last year and added another strong freshman class this year (led by Adair). He also noted that there are five talented seniors - led by Carper - who have made districts the previous three years (now four), won a district title (now two) and play at a high level outside of high school. The Barons also had two players (Senior Liz Levy and junior Makenna Copley) rejoining the team from the local Development Academy programs who did not play high school soccer last year. Defensively, Manheim returned its entire backfield from a strong unit in 2017, including First-Team L-L League Section Two All-Star goalie Kelli Kreider.

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition Stoltzfus called this year’s district championship victory a total team effort, one that featured the youth movement as well as the senior leadership. “Adair had a goal worthy of winning a district title,” he said about the score that came at the 49:56 mark in the game. “Our seniors showed how much this one meant to them with Maddie Carper flying all over the midfield, Liz Levy battling it out on the wing, and Brittany Benner providing great cover for our outside backs. But Kelli Kreider was the standout. To shutout a team of that quality and save two clear chances in the last 20 minutes was what put us over the top. “I can’t say enough about (sophomore) Erin Greiner and Makenna Copley’s work rate on the attack,” Stoltzfus said. “But also Tylee Stauffer taking on the responsibility to defend their
best attacker one-on-one; she was really impressive playing the full 80 minutes.” Kreider, a senior, finished the game with 11 saves, including punching a shot out of bounds that was headed for the near post. Stoltzfus said winning two titles in the last three years is quite an accomplishment, but with a young team - one that started a number of freshman and sophomores - he believes there is plenty of talent to continue to achieve great things in upcoming years. Central earned the right to play for the championship by beating Lower Dauphin 2-1 Monday, Oct. 29 at Northeastern High School in the district semifinals. Manheim scored twice in a span of three minutes late in the first half. Greiner sent a beautiful diagonal pass to Copley who blasted in the first goal. Greiner scored the second goal on a
feed from Levy. Kreider collected four saves and Stauffer, a sophomore, made a great defensive kick, clearing the potential tying goal off the line. “We had a very good first half,” Stoltzfus said. “We found success in our midfield trio (Carper, Copley and Autumn Greiner). It was a very physical game. Good combination play(s) led to our two goals. “The second half they came out firing and got a goal back,” Stoltzfus continued. “Tylee Stauffer saved an equalizer on the line off a corner and Maddie Carper played a great last 20 minutes to inspire us to victory.” CROSS COUNTRY Carson Hepner finished in 15th place with a time of 18:01 for the Barons in the boys state cross country meet in Hershey on Saturday, Nov. 3. “He was in 70th halfway through
November 7, 2018 - 13
the race and fell back in the second half,” head coach Ryan Kennedy said. “He went for it though; you have to run aggressively in the state meet with that caliber of competition.” FOOTBALL The Barons, the No. 1 seed in districts, had a bye for the first round of the District Three Class 5A playoffs and will host a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 9 against Governor Mifflin (7-4), which shutout Elizabethtown 30-0 last Friday. FIELD HOCKEY The Barons suffered a 4-1 loss to a tough Palmyra (16-4-1) team in the Class 2A District Three semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Milton Hershey School. Barons from pg 13 Palmyra has tremendous team speed and utilized its midfielders and forwards. “I was very impressed with their quick stick to stick passing and high ball speed, she said. “After Palmyra scored two goals early, we called a timeout, regrouped, made some adjustments and then we were able to hold them without another goal until the last few minutes of the second half. The Barons got on the scoreboard on a goal by senior forward Codi Bollinger, who ripped a great
shot with 10 minutes to play. In addition to the goal, Bollinger made a number of defensive plays. Junior Maddy Barbush and sophomore Cami Lehman each made nice stops on defense to keep Central in the game. “I was proud of our team for giving a fantastic effort and hanging with this team for the majority of the game, Briggs said. “Palmyra is a very high caliber program who often finds themselves in the district and state playoffs year after year. We aspire to continue building a program like that. On Saturday, Nov. 3 the Barons (15-8) lost 7-1 to Twin Valley in the
third-fourth place district game for state seeding. This was a rematch, as Central lost 2-0 to Twin Valley in the first game this season. Junior forward Lily Sipel scored
the Barons’ lone goal on a corner in the second half. The Barons season continues with the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Bird Club Sets Meeting
R023906
The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Darin McNeil will present the program “Conservation and Ecology of Golden-Winged Warblers in Pennsylvania.” The program will focus on his research, which involves the conservation and management of rare and declining animals with an emphasis on Eastern forests. Although McNeil’s work is mostly focused on birds, he has worked on projects involving reptiles, amphibians, insect pollinators, and forest mammals of Pennsylvania. McNeil is a doctoral candidate at Cornell University preparing for graduation in spring 2019. The topic of his dissertation is the management of imperiled golden-winged warbler populations across Pennsylvania. A short business meeting will precede the program. The public is invited to attend free of charge and may call 717-725-2717 or 717-984-2738 with questions. More information about the club can be found at www.lancaster birdclub.org and on Facebook by searching for “Lancaster County Bird Club.”
